I love this movie, I remember when I was real little watching this with my dad who was a fire chief at the time and loving it now I'm going through high school and am going through the academy in respect of my father who died in a fire... This song makes my eyes water because I remember all the moments we shared watching it and he inspired me. Best song and movie I've ever seen and makes me proud to be a firefighter
Retired Paramedic/ Firefighter for 27 years. I was injured in the line of duty and force retired. I knew every one of these guys, not the actors, but the very different people they played. I lived in this culture and the job defined my morals, ethics and humanity. I never knew that day my response with Rescue 2 would be my last. I did appreciate the moments before the injury and now treasure the memories of my career. This song is perfection. I may be down, but the show does indeed go on. 👩🚒🚒🚒🚒🚑🚑
@@juneclark3584 I appreciate that so much! ❤️ It was an amazing career. It was a very rough time when I was hurt and told it was over. Not how I wanted it to end, but we can't control that. Have a great day! 🙂❤️
@@jessicamerriman2336 thank you,I thank all of our service workers are heroes. It's people like you that makes a difference. I humbly thank you. Every time I see a police officer,I teach my son to tell them thank you for thier service. Plus I love German shepherd. Have a nice day,June in Utah 🐱
Nice....I can only hope to have a career as memorable as yours is to you. ...I doubt we even live in the same state (I'm in Texas) but thanx for all the good work that you did.
I remember seeing this movie for the first time when I was just a very young child and has always been one of my favorites. Ever since that day I knew I would become firefighter some day and now 20+ plus years later I am finally taking the steps to do so. I hope I can make it in.
Hopefully you get a lot of fires, sadly today firefighting has become an ambulance service that very rarely goes to fires. I come from a long family of firefighters. Wasn't uncommon for my dad to have 2-3 working fires or multiple alarms in a shift back in the day, Friday's nights were usually rooming house Mattress fires and weekends were dumpster fires in between all the other bigger fires. Good luck all I can say is hopefully you get lucky, other than that keep bandaids with you because you'll likely be using those most of your career.
It's true what Donald Sutherland says in this movie."The funny thing about firemen is... night and day they are always firemen." I joined the Fire Brigade in Scotland at 19. Did seven years. Now I live in Austria and have been in the Fire Service for five years. I love the job. There's nothing else like it.
I remember my dad taking me to see it in the theaters. He was a firefighter for 36 years before he retired in 2002. He won firefighter of the year for San Diego county a few years before retiring.
I was working at a movie theatre when this came out in 1991. We got to screen it the night before the Friday release, to make sure that the print (film, as they were still put out on celluloid) was put together properly. When we hit this section, I said, "Oh, that's Bruce Hornsby!!", and sang the song, not knowing that there were TWO Hornsby songs on the soundtrack. I still LOVE this film, because it has a stellar cast, a GREAT story, and all the effects that are needed to tell this epic, tragic tale.........
Incredibly unrealistic fire scenes, but this little montage does a great job of showing you what the job is really like (except the paperwork and exams). Chickens, dogs, PT, training towers, and so forth.
This song literally defines what it means to be in a self sacrifice service job. And sometimes you lose a brother or sister but you gotta find the fortitude and reason to keep on getting up. Because at the end of the day whether Firefighter Medical Police Military or Peace Corps.....the Show WILL Go On. And so will you.
This was very unique in a class of its own great cast outstanding movie that inspires people even today. It really help convey the heroism these fireman show and the recognition they deserve.
This scenes resonates with me so much. Did 20.6 years in the United States Navy as a Firefighter (Damage Controlman). Retired from active duty in 2020, and this scene reminds me of my time training with my fellow brothers and sisters in arms. 100% Disabled now with the VA, broken, beat and scared….but the show does go on. Always keep grinding training, and keep your head on a swivel. Have zero regrets and would do it all over again!! “I AM MY BROTHERS KEEPER”
I commented on _Backdraft_ here a couple years ago, but failed to note what a wonderful song "The Show Goes On" is and how marvelously it works here. Hornsby's thoughtful, understated opening fleshing out into a meat-and-potatoes instrumental backdrop for his voice makes for a song I suspect I will never tire of.
Love this movie. Grew up in the same neighborhood in it was filmed in. The main firehouse was in my neighborhood. The store Watra my mom worked at. The theater Brighton Park Theater is where I saw this movie. Great memories.

This movie along with ladder 49 were my favorite youth movies, and made me want to be a firefighter, 8 years later still want to be a firefighter in the future
My favorite part in the movie is when Brian finds the chemicals on Stevens boat and Steven says " man look at you, man look at your face, all the things you must be thinking. God you hate my guts , don't you."
When he talks about him and his son floating on the water in the boat always makes me tear up no doubt every time. He missed his son so much. I could totally relate years ago.
I love this song but I think they should've saved it for the ending credits right after the last scene. It would've fitted better since Stephen had just passed away. The Show Goes On means that while it is appropiate to mourn over the lost of a loved one we must remember that life still goes on.

SPOILERS!!! Kurt Russell DIES at the end of _Backdraft_. For all his hotshot, expert, "I-got-this-wired" attitude and how he rides his brother and everyone else, he's as mortal as anyone else. I'm not a fireman, and I doubt I could be one. I certainly respect those who stare the beast in the eye and are willing to take it on. What I don't respect is bald-faced arrogance, and that's Russell's character in spades.
