CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Shadow (Robert De Niro) shows Brian (William Baldwin) the ropes and teaches him all about the life of a fire.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The sons of a Chicago fireman who gave his life in the performance of his duties, firefighting brothers Kurt Russell and William Baldwin carry their lifelong sibling rivalry into their work. Russell is convinced that Baldwin hasn't got what it takes to remain in the fire department. Baldwin is transferred to a "safe" assignment, assisting arson investigator Robert DeNiro, who is trying to make sense of a series of fires involving an oxygen-induced ball of fire called a backdraft. The investigation reveals a link between corrupt alderman J. T. Walsh and imprisoned pyromaniac Donald Sutherland. The trail of evidence leads Baldwin to suspect that his brother Russell, a much-decorated hero, may be the "inside" man setting up the arsons.

Deniro's performance in this movie is underrated. He's the spine of the film.
Don't forget about Donald Sutherland. For the brief time he was on-screen, he stole the movie.
@mindriot91_96 Yes he was a steong presence.
The real star of this move was the fire. The producers really did a good job of giving character and personality to the fire. This movie made me fear, respect and admire fire all at the same time.
Jennifer Jason Leigh reportedly said she wanted the role of the fire, since it was the best part
Like in "Twister", they made the tornadoes seem like living, breathing monsters, which some storm chasers say is how they feel about them.
"Can you help me find the guy"
"Sure. Now the first thing is to burn up the crime scene"
The purpose of this scene is to teach Brian about fire. What Ronald is doing is demonstrating how fire REALLY works. The only way to catch the arsonist, the only way to beat these fires, in Ronald's words "Is to love it a little". That's the purpose of this scene.
@@MAnuscript421 The investigator's name is Don Rimgale, AKA Shadow. Ronald is the old guy is the psychiatric facility.
@@JSRbowling595Ronald was the former torch
One of my relatives was a fireman for 30 years. He said something very similar when I was a teenager. “You have to respect fire because the second you don’t it will kill you”
My relative who has common sense for 30 years said the same thing.
I watched this as a kid with my dad at a young age. This is the one scene that always stands out, i always was intrigued by fire but i like how in this scene its a living thing, always waiting and with the right conditions will appear and destroy what ever it can find. It eats and it breaths because it wants too.
It's a predator breathes air almost like we do. It moves like it has a mind of it's own. The more it eats, the bigger it gets. And it will fight to stay alive with everything it has especially when cornered. To take on an animal like this is to hunt something that can hunt you. And to disrespect this beast is a death wish.
My favorite moment in the film. Love DeNiro. If you don't think he is a great actor, get your head examined.
I think De Niro himself needs to get his head examined.
*He's a great actor, just a really second rate human being*
@@T--xk3hf U talkin to me?
This scene gets me every time. When Robert’s character shows Brian how the fire breaths eats and hates anything that comes near it.
DeNiro slung some serious swagger in this film-AND-in this scene-(he OWNED this scene!)
There's a reason why fire is considered an element. And Ron Howard pulled it off.
Was. It was considered an element because people were not trying to understand it.
@@lajoswinkler still is. There is more to fire than what we know so far.
Ron Howard pulled it off BIG TIME!
This scene was potent back in the day when it was released.
This is the most Stone Cold truth scene of all time. Fire is a living thing.
+John Stjohn Well, it is a living thing, if you think about it.
From a firefighter I think this way too

getting to play a Chicago Firefighter for how ever long it took to film the movie-filming it on location in Chicago-AND-to have the support of the Chicago Fire Department to help make the movie!
The haunting Hans Zimmer music at 1.48 helps make the scene

Greatest method actor of all time
"Did the fire look at you?"
I think it looked at Rimgale at some point.
Hearing what he went through, saving a scumbag like Ronald, and knowing he could either run from it, and his job, or pretend he was ok and keep doing his job.... probably pretending the night terrors and the flashbacks don't happen? I think it looked THROUGH him too, at him and through him, and made Shadow who he was when the movie started.
the fire looked at Rimgale at 1 point in his career and that was the night shadow burned him!
This movie inspired me to become a firefighter
Amazing scene that gave me goosebumps as a child and still does today. De Niro is great, as always. William Baldwin should have been just as big as his brother Alec. I never understood why his popularity never grew.
As I understand it, William Baldwin became very religious and basically devoted his life to it and gave up acting. He would’ve been as big as his brother. He had the right acting chops and great screen presence.
Let’s just casually start a fire and stare at it
@Somnus Waltz calm down John Wayne...
Well how are you supposed to learn about fire with no fire?
@@vitamind2387 YOU calm down
You’re right! Maybe call the fire department!? Oh wait, they’re already there. Plus, if you’ve seen the movie, the FIREman has got a FIRE extinguisher on hand you absolute toad😂
It’s a movie dingdong
the art of forensics is examining the aftermath... it takes time... observation... measurement... understanding... and blood lust love of what you are looking at. Ive been into that field and I got hooked on it, nearly blood drunk... best satisfying job in the world... however living in that world makes you forget where your from.
In this scene, DeNiro is Yoda to Baldwin's Luke.
Eventually, MaCaffrey becomes Battalion Chief and head of OFI where his nephew, Sean, is lead investigator.
Another Star Wars reference in another Backdraft movie clip, awesome! 🤟😎
Yeah the sequel was very subpar and far too late
This film is ranked on my top ten favorites.
De Niro smoking a cig, his best scenes. This one and Goodfellas, with Cream (Sunshine Of Your Love)!!
"Backdraft" was the basis for "Chicago Fire"
Lol I always thought that.
That show is a disgrace.
@@Finnmarken91 sorry totally disagree with you!
I totally forgot robert de niro was in this movie, I remember kurt russell and William baldwin but not de niro, it was also a great movie
William Baldwin in his finest performance.
+RedBandMagic03 well fuck stick lets examine....
at the time he'd been in the buisness since 1983, so this was his 7th year honing his craft.. The majority of the film rested on his shoulder, considering hes in about 90% of all the sequences in the film and holds his own with veterans that had been in the buisness for a lot longer than he was... ie De Mornay, Russel, De niro, jason leigh, Walsh.... so id say its rather impressive. So with that said for fucking retards such as yourself and with your IQ that probably falls equal to the amount of intelligence of my two testicles, it seems like you have no intellect when it comes to actors, character study, and the fact that Brian Mccafrey would bitch slap you like i just did.
The best firefighting movie
Only The Brave is good too.
No that’s the Towering Inferno
The Fire should have been nominated for Best Actor but it decided to let the rest of the cast shine as well...because it wants to.
This part scared the living crap out of me when I was a kid.
I can't imagine the type of a Man that can run into a Blazing Inferno of Fire! HEROES? ABSOLUTELY 💯!
"only way to beat it is to think like that..."
De Niro en détective, Donald Sutherland en pyromane - autiste, et Kurt
Russel, en drôle de cow-boy du feu, solitaire, généreux et émouvant.
Fire is living thing
It breeds and it heat
Imagine if someone walked in and was like, “ah what are you guys doing?”
Happy B-day to you Shadow cheers to your career in film .
true that deniro is the BEST I MEAN BEST
Great movie ever
It'd be funny if his little dramatic fire speech set the building on fire again and they gotta call 911. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Firefighter:So what happened?
DeNiro:I was uh....giving a speech and tried to show how lethal fire can be and....ooops.
It lives, breathes, and eats, but has no emotions. Fire consumes, no thought
very good point.
This wasn't just a rah rah fireman movie. There was an arsonist angle to it. De niro was awesome in this. He was like the IA guy from Cop Land.
IT IS A LIVING THING THATS WHY ITS SO DEADLY IS BECAUSE IT IS A LIVING THEN AND IT CAN KILL WHEN IT WANTS TO AND IF IT WANTS TO AND IF YOUR NOT CAREFUL IT WILL CAUSE A BACKDRAFT OR FLASHOVER
Now I know how to start a fire
My friends in the fire department in Quebec tell me how terrifying a Backdraft really is, im a Combat Engineer so they told me its like a bomb going off with insane concussive blast, one friend got knocked off the ladder
"Not because of the physics of flammable liquids, but because it wants to!" ... bollocks.
yeah hollywood produce lots of bullshit.
I was just discussing this with my boys writers do this shit so often and we accept it lol like the scene when Samuel Jackson talks about ice having a mind of its own in Deep Blue Sea. First off niggas don't ski so I couldn't buy his monologue after he said ice. Then Helen Hunts speech in Twister about the tornado missing houses and coming straight for hers. Give me a break woman. Lol rant over

Totally agree. These lines were just stupid. Only Robert de Niro can it make sound like something serious.
so many arsonists were born from watching this movie
Pretty sure its because of the flammable liquid you just put down... that wouldn't have just happened.
Well damn

Andre Nickatina was here
Sooo he just sets the house on fire??
Jordan van der Keyl he put it out afterwards if you haven’t seen the movie
No, that was the high rise office, it was a teaching moment.
If the fire was burning that long and the wood was previously burned, wouldn’t it have gotten out of control? I know Rimgale used a CO2 fire extinguisher to put it out. However, considering how long he was talking and how fast fire spreads, it should’ve been beyond an extinguisher at that point. 🤔
@@tiffanybatcheller-harris522 Would have been quite the embarrassment if it got out of hand huh? Those two knuckleheads go down for arson and the arsonist walks.
Le film que tous les pompiers doivent avoir vu
Well I hope their investigation had already been concluded before this.
Good movie but Tom Cruise was Ron Howard's first choice to play Tim. His scenes with Kurt and Robert De Niro would have elevated the movie a great deal. But we got discount Baldwin instead. Also how do you have De Niro and Kurt Russell in the same movie and not have them appear together in scenes?
Heeke
andre nickatina -these clowns
Uh, how did he put the fire out?
Immediately after this little clip, in the movie, he uses a CO2 fire extinguisher
who was the arsonist tho SOMEONE ANSWER THIS
AXE
Dude, watch the movie. It becomes pretty obvious early on if you pay just a little attention, but still a great film to watch on a rainy day.
This movie is awesome I just don't like the scenes involving the love drama.
Which one? Kurt Russell's love drama with his failing marriage or Baldwin's love drama with Rachael Leigh? The former I thought was pretty engrossing when taken with the other aspects of Kurt's character. Baldwin's however, I kinda agree it seemed like an unnecessary tack on. I mean he already had the rivalry with his brother and peer pressure. You didn't really need his love interest to be added into that.
The romantic drama could have been done much better, but I think Baldwin was out of his depth and JJL was miscast. This was an unusually mainstream Hollywood movie for her, she usually does more quirky dark films like the hitcher and Single White Female. Rebecca deMornay was great though even it was a small part. In fact all the supporting cast was terrific except Leigh she was kind of cold.
The moment when the narrative and everything else in this movie jumped the shark...
The Great Agitator they were speaking metaphorically
Not really, it's the idea that the fire was a wolf, and the arsonist turned it into a dog. Axe loved something too hard, and motivated him to this point. Ronnie understood this because his love of fire got him where he is, yet Axe is where he is because he understood fire but didn't love it, as his job at the end of the day is to put it out.
Is shadow the cheif or the investigator
Shadow is a Fire Investigator.
He’s an officer in the department, but I don’t think he’s at Chief rank, though.
@@JamesZilla808 office of fire investigation also known as OFI is the division that shadow works in.
These clowns: by Andre Nickatina thank me later!!!
I know it was likely safe but who just sets a doorway on fire to prove a point? Seems just a little dangerous in case a door opened or something.
Living thing hey? Can we make love to it like a living thing too?
An arsonist can.
Do u make love to plants?
1:09🔥🚬🚪
I like the flamyness
De Niro is an incredible actor. He should of stuck with what he does best. Now that he has TDS, I cringe every time I see him
Let's talk about reality. Backdraft is a great movie. Except that the firefighting shown was already ancient history. The scenes where Stephen rushes into fire without water for a firefighter let alone a lieutenant was a joke. I worked on a Rescue Squad in 1988, as a Paramedic Firefighter it was our job to rescue people in a burning building, whilst the firefighters on the engines and trucks would deal with the fire, those of us on the Rescue Squad enter the building with or without the firefighters and water. We search quickly and effectively, we get everyone out including ourselves. The key principal is that our lives are of value. We spent more than enough keeping the same number of victims alive.
I heard the show, Chicago Fire, is more realistic than Backdraft.
@@MAnuscript421 one of the tech advisor/advisors for Chicago Fire was also a tech advisor when they were filming this movie. I think he is a 25/30 plus year vet of the C F D. Loved this movie when it came out when I was a teenager and I really enjoy watching Chicago Fire. Side note 50% of my family lives in Chicago and one lives in Rockford-(and I somehow ended up in Tennessee still trying to figure out how that happened)
I am sorry but you cannot light fuel by throwing a lit cigarette at it the ignition point of fuel is much higher than a lit cigarette ignition point means the temperature whereby fuel is ignited by burning it if it only took a lit cigarette to set fuel on fire then transporting fuel in trucks would be unsafe because driving on a hot sunny day could ignite the fuel in the fuel tanker Hollywood should be realistic if they want to make a movie about firefighters and arson
Why does De Niro seem so out of place in this movie?
Because he's not a gangster in this movie 😂
I think he is perfect for this role, ever met a New York fire investigator? Lol
+Leumas Nosnibor yeah their pretty intense but he plays a Chicago fire investigator
Could've moved cities and transferred Ben!
Chicago is not a bit less insane than New York. One could say its even more since a few years.
fire is not a living thing it has no conchens
Neither does a tree
LOGAN IRONSIDE learn to spell first
Well it needs oxygen?
Billy Baldwin is so hot
Man this movie is good as far as Hollywood goes but realistically it was a joke.. going into a structure without a line is not gonna not happen…so many things in this movie was so ridiculous it’s was not even funny .. as far as the firefighting goes.. but it was pretty accurate how they portrayed inside the firehouse.. but it’s just a movie.. it’s for entertainment so I get it
Thank you. I respect your comment because even though MOST movies are ridiculous they are just entertainment. People can’t enjoy movies sometimes because they expect everything to be realistic to a T. And that will never be the case. Yea some movies go over and beyond to get the accuracy down packed but most will just use their imagination. And as a film lover and a lover of this film, I can 100% accept that
