Today I want to share how I care for my geranium. I absolutely love them, one of my favorites. These have been here since the first week in May, and look as fresh and as beautiful as ever. This method applies to the annual variety of geraniums, not the hardy geraniums that are more of a thick ground cover. I'm enjoying them right now, because they will be fading out pretty soon as the temps drop, and then I will be replacing with some beautiful new evergreen and seasonal touches to carry through winter. Hope you all enjoy this "quick tip" type of video. If you have anything else like this you'd like to see, drop me a comment and let me know. Have a beautiful day!
Oh, and thank you so much to all that lived through poor audio. I have a mic now. Hooray!! Tap, tap. Is this thing on? 😂❤️🎤🎬
    About Me:
I'm a small town city gardener in New Jersey, Zone 7a, with a love of English Cottage style gardening, with just a touch of formality. I do this all myself. It brings me so much joy. I edge, plant, mow, fertilize, water, prune, trim hedges, saw tree limbs, install drip irrigation, install low voltage garden lights, maintain the fountains. You name it, I take care of it. Labor of love. ❤️👩🏻‍🌾

Every time I see geraniums, I remember my neighbor who lived 2 doors down, same side of the street; where we lived when my children were in school. She grew beautiful red geraniums around the mailbox, at the street curb.I planted them around my mailbox, at the street curb. Mine wouldn't grow, just died. So,I planted begonias, they grew beautifully,I was happy but I always admired her geraniums when I walked past her home. On day I was tending my begonias,my neighbor walked over to visit, she said, "I just love YOUR begonias, they won't grow for me, so I planted geraniums, but I sure enjoy yours when I walk by. We had a great conversation, and became close friends. She kept the geraniums for me, and I kept the begonias for her. Thanks for the memories!

I live in Australia and have several Geraniums. They are a bit like cooking a sponge cake, some people can cook them others can’t. Lucky for me, my Geraniums seem to grow like weeds, my biggest problem is getting them to not grow as compact as they do, but still keep them looking balanced.

Hi Laura! Great video! I live in New Jersey, but I don’t know what you mean by “Zone 7A”. (It sounds vaguely creepy, like something out of science fiction!) I googled it, but I remain a bit confused. I live in Montclair, and still don’t know what zone I’m in - or what the zones indicate in terms of gardening…
I lived in the city for 25 years, and was raised outside Boston, so I’m still getting used having to know what County I live in when filling out forms; I’ve never had that come up before either!
At any rate, thanks again for your well-executed and informative video.

It really all depends on climate. I’m in NJ and we have tons of rain here. I’d say they don’t enjoy tons of moisture and leaves will yellow and brown so I only water when we have had extreme dry periods. I’d keep them moist but well drained and not soppy. Can dry a little between watering if they aren’t in blasting afternoon sun, then they will look droopy until they get a drink.

What causes the leaves to turn yellow? Please respond

    • @HowsItGrowing
      @HowsItGrowing  4 роки тому +1

It is either under or over watered. Yellowing will occur in both situations. If you feel like you give them a lot of water, try less and letting them wait a little longer. And sometimes if they are planted too close together and airflow isn’t getting to them, that can cause lower leaves to yellow. Do you fertilize? I definitely recommend a water soluable fertilizer every couple of weeks.

Those are called stems. And in this case, you remove the entire stem from the plant when you dead head to encourage new growth. If I snapped one off that wasn’t dead for the sake of demonstrating, I assure you they grew just fine! 👍👍👍👍👍👍

I realize this was 4ys ago but I'm having issues now.
Your geraniums are wonderful. I love, love, love your whole area! 1 day our living Father will bless me with a home of my own. I rent but have planted & have flowers in pots but I'm not, or can't do anything permanent. Awesome

I live in upstate NY. I brought the geraniums home from my parent's grave last November, and nursed them back to health over the winter, in an upstairs window. just four weeks ago (early June) I took them back. Next day I returned. The leaves were pale translucent green, white or brown! Some looked like something caustic had dripped on them. (drip marks) I was devestated. The night had gone down to 38, but none of the other plants in the cemetery seemed affected. Do you think it was going from indoors to outdoors, or did some mean person spray it with Round-up?

I don't love the look of geraniums (leaves), but the flower colors are pretty. I just learned the plant is edible though (leaves + flowers) so I will continue to keep them around as a prepping supplement, if nothing else.
For some reason I can't seem to kill these things and have overwintered 4 plants in my house for 2 years now. I put them out on my balcony when it gets warm.
So it looks like I need to add a case of Caeser and Ranch dressing to my long-haul pantry. Just in case. 😂

These are beautiful! Can you tell me if once the flower dies, but there are still buds just underneath it, so you wait to deadhead until there are no more buds. I hope this question makes sense. Thank you!
