I'm the worst gardener like, ever. Geraniums are my absolute fave ever. Consistent bloomers, so easy, so tolerant of our dull British climate. Outside, window sill, all year round. Love em.
My "crazy plant lady" of an older daughter keeps telling me to clean up my geraniums! SO NOW I KNOW WHY! She never told me WHY! I promise I will follow this kind gentleman's instructions! THANK YOU!!!
About four years ago I was given a geranium that was a little smaller than the ones in this vid. I didn't hold out much hope for the poor little thing because I am notoriously bad with plants. But I lucked into giving it the proper care, and it must be a particularly hardy one 'cause it's still going strong and in the summers it's covered with glorious bright salmon pink pompoms. It hangs outside my front door and my spirits lift every time I go in or out. Yay geraniums!
Gosh so much work.. I'm in tropical Australia and just snap off a stem stick it into the soil.. No fuss.. Just water for a week or two and New plant. Happy as. Love their POP of colour amongst all my croton and cordyline and palms. I'm feeling blessed 😊
Interesting tip. I am going to try that this year and report back on progress. Thanks Australia from waiting 'im'patiently for last frost Toronto Canada :-)
I'm Australian too, don't live in the tropics but my mum had a new house, no garden and had some aunties coming to visit so she stuck geranium cuttings everywhere and they all grew! We have hot weather and Geraniums are always great,
Geranium originates from Africa so dry poorer soil no water splash on leaves and blooms very high heat and cleaning the mess is all what they need.I'm Mediterranean and we literally grow them like weeds just picture in your mind our glorious balconies! I moved to UK started growing em and faced the greatest gardening battle ever all these clouds drizzles rain humidity and lack of direct sunshine 😢 😆 I'm advanced gardener I've grown em even in the Middle East easy but here in England is absolutely exhausting!
Thank you so much for this info. I have always thought they couldn't take a lot of heat. I knew to deadhead the leaves and spent flowers but did not know about keeping old dead leaves off the soil and not to over water. We have been having a lot of rain lately and my plants are sitting in water. I'm off to the deck to rescue them right now!
There are some super high bred geraniums available. Take time to find some different flower shapes and colors. I have peach, coral, white, yellow, ruby. Mine last for years and are huge and live inside by a south east window. I water once a week and only fertilize in the summer month. They bloom year round. I repot into a larger pot (2 inches larger than current) about every other year. I do move the pots outside during the summer months here in Iowa.
We start Geraniums from cuttings. We let them go completely dry and then water. We cut them down to bare stems once a year. They live in our yard here in So Calif. They are like weeds here!
Excellent video and very informative! I appreciate the close up pictures as well so we can see exactly what you are talking about, that truly makes a difference. When I retired I began growing plants and have gone through so many of them, but the plant I came back to, was the one my mother and grandmother grew so beautifully, the geranium. It stumped me for years that I could not propagate it, but this year I did get 15 new plants from propagation. Now I can enjoy them all over my property. Do remember what he said about clean up, because they will need that as they grow as well.
Thank you for sharing your Mothers Day with us!! Happy for your daughter and her new found treasure! Truly tickles a Mom's heart for her children to be excited about things we love too.
So glad I saw this. My pot of geraniums, after two years looking great, is looking stressed. I know there is dead leafy material on the soil, and the flowers seem to be reaching out and away from the rest of the plant with longer stems. Hope I can save it. I really enjoy it. Thanks again. 😊

I live in Victoria, Australia and grew up in the country. I'm 70 now so my memories go way back. There were always geraniums growing unkempt and wild in the sprawling backyards. We called them dunny plants because they grew near most backyard toilets. I hated them. Now I have many of them as I realised how beautiful they are when cared for properly and given some TLC. Just found your videos. I have a planter in my front yard ( south facing) that gets pretty hot in the summer. I usually plant geraniums in this pot and they do well. Thanks for the info in this video and I am happy to say I already treat my geraniums as you suggest.
As soon as you notice it is like that! It will produce a multitude of blooms if you continue to do that. Plus weekly fertilizer throughout the growing season. I just use all purpose miracle grow liquid feed attached to my hose. During our drought July and August I put my finger in the soil, if it is dry up to my first knuckle I water.
In California we are having brutal summers where the sun burns everything, so I planted a geranium under the shade of my front yard tree where it gets light but not hit directly by the sun. For the past two years the plant has been huge but I just noticed the leaves and flowers are gone leaving a lot of very healthy looking stems. Do you think this is due to lack of direct sunlight? My other thoughts are overwatering or lack of fertilizer. I am stumped! Especially since there are 4 other geraniums under the tree growing like crazy!
We've had quite a bit of rain this summer. How can I keep them from burning up even though I have to keep them along a sidewalk next to my apartment? When mt geraniums are doing well, they are so beautiful and I'm very proud of them.

I work for the city in our downtown flower program. We plant geraniums in baskets. Every year I deal with geranium rust. What can I do to prevent this? Thanks
Hi again. I have a question. I love geraniums. I plant them every year. My problem is that after the first set of flowers fades, I pinch them off. Yet the second set of blossoms never grow back as tall as the original set. I plant them in 2 long concrete flower boxes in the front of our house, facing SW. Lots of sun. I feed them once a month. Yet they always grow back shorter than the first set. 🤷🏻🙄. Any suggestions would be most welcome. I'm in New Jersey, USA.
😮😯😲😳🤯 !!!!! Holy guacamole !!!! Seriously!?! Plot twist !! I'd been following the instructions that recommended once a month. THANK YOU !!!! I'd almost decided to give up on getting geraniums this year. Thank you for responding so quickly and with solid advice. 😃👩🏻🌾
This is my first year growing geraniums from seeds. Mine are about the size you showed. I’m in a warmer climate so I moved mine outside already. We just had rain and have rain in the forecast every day for the next 7 days. Should I bring them in to avoid damp feet for so many days? I have a grow rack they can go on. I may or may not have had 100% germination on 40 seeds. 😊 l’ll be gifting many to friends. Thank you!
You may do all these things or don‘t do all these things and they will still thrive - obviously in a greenhouse you need to look for them more intensively. I cut mine down and overwinter them in the cellar with only a little daylight, never a problem, even in Germany. However, the guy from the Geranium Society says they should be watered from below, and that‘s what I do, too. I keep them in their containers and put them every other day in a bucket with some water with a little bit of fertilizer in it which can be soaked up. All in all no worries and minimum work with them, the flowering in summer is awesome.
Thank you for this video… I’ve been watering mine geraniums too much I think … I live in SW Georgia near the GA/FL line … it gets really hot down here … can geraniums take the blazing sun here? Should they get morning sun or evening or not too much of ether?
How do you handle the flower when a couple of the bloom is dead? Do you have to take off the whole bloom off at the main stem. Can you just pull off the little part that is dead? Debbie😊
If the whole bloom isn't spent, then you can just pull off the dead petals to get a little more life out of the bloom. If the whole bloom is done, then go ahead and take off the bloom and stem making sure to snap it off all the way down to where it connects to the main stem.
They sure can handle (and prefer) the hot Sun. As mentioned in the video we grow our geraniums in the full sun of the greenhouses where the temps get upwards of 135 degrees.
@@ericeandco no it wasn't powdery mildew as I know because I deal with it yearly on my Dahlias and Zinnias. These geraniums were grown in plentiful sunshine 6+ hours daily.
I have a problem with buying geraniums in hanging plants and i have to replant them because they are being hoked by this meshy gauze bag the planters put around the root ball and do not remove. Is this normal or did they just forget to take it off?
Would like to know how to care for geraniums when home and in a container, I know to dead head but what to do when they get leggy. Martha Washington geraniums as well. What are good friends for a container? Okay to put them in a flower bed?
My red geraniums always get this little green worm that loves to feast on the flower. I do de-head the flower as soon as I see signs of the little buggers. I was hoping this video would address the why and how to keep them away.
@@SharkeysFloralGreenhouses Thank-you so much for your reply. I do love the red geraniums but I don't like fighting the worms. I will check out the link you sent me for the insecticide.

I work for the city in our downtown flower program. We plant geraniums in baskets. Every year I deal with geranium rust. What can I do to prevent this? Thanks
Well executed video thanks!
Glad you liked it! Thank you.
Feed more often, once a week is minimum. They aren't getting enough nutrients.
Thank you!
Yes, watch the watering with the babies.

Thank you for the excellent advice 👍🏻
Thank you for watching.
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this video… I’ve been watering mine geraniums too much I think … I live in SW Georgia near the GA/FL line … it gets really hot down here … can geraniums take the blazing sun here? Should they get morning sun or evening or not too much of ether?
Glad it was helpful! Yes geraniums can handle the heat and sun.
Love your videos! I like how you explain, it ! Thank you!
Thank you so much. Glad you like them!
Absolutely excellent information. I thank you Sir.😊
Thank you!
Never thought I would watch a video on how to care for my geraniums. If we clean it up, will the flowers come back? Newbie here 😅
They will keep re-blooming. Just make sure to keep feeding them all summer with Beat Your Neighbor fertilizer.
What is the fertilizer you recommend for Geraniums? I didn’t quite get what you said.
Our Beat Your Neighbor fertilizer is available at: www.BeatYourNeighbor.com
Thank you for this. My geraniums are not looking to good. So this helps a lot. I’d miracle grow a good fertilizer for them?
Our Beat Your Neighbor fertilizer is awesome for geraniums and can be found here: www.BeatYourNeighbor.com
I have a Martha Washington that was purple when I bought it, now the color regrows much lighter to even white. How did that happen?
Ty I’ve learned a lot from your videos
Thank you for watching.
I plan to have pitcher with holes all around the sides buried in the ground to have a way to make compost on sight
Now I know why my Geraniums have not done well the next year, planted in garden but we get too much rain.
Yup, they don't like to be too wet.
I overwater and mine is just happy as can be in the Desert SW! :)
Thanks for the great advice. It’s so simple and sensible. Of course, I ran out to my garden and did just what you said 😃
Fantastic!
Wish you talked about large potted Geraniums. I have trouble keeping them blooming all summer. Therefore, I shy away from them.
You didn't mention sun. Can geraniums take the west hot afternoon sun?
Thanks for the good info.
They sure can handle (and prefer) the hot Sun. As mentioned in the video we grow our geraniums in the full sun of the greenhouses where the temps get upwards of 135 degrees.
@@SharkeysFloralGreenhousesthanks!
Thank you. Can I trim my geranium back? The stems are growing too long and heavy with flowers, heading out towards the lawn.
Yes, you can.
How does that work is there any benefit from even having them sounds like too much work for such a flowering bush.
I have had some geraniums in doors, at the windows, for 6 years. Is there a way to prevent them growing too tall?
Last summer the leaves on my geraniums after a healthy green growth, began to grow-in white. Any advice as to what might have caused that to happen?
Maybe low light or possibly powdery mildew.
They should grow right thru that mesh. We have never had an issue with it.
Would like to know how to care for geraniums when home and in a container, I know to dead head but what to do when they get leggy. Martha Washington geraniums as well. What are good friends for a container? Okay to put them in a flower bed?
Great video. Talk really helps me
Awesome! Thank you!
My red geraniums always get this little green worm that loves to feast on the flower. I do de-head the flower as soon as I see signs of the little buggers. I was hoping this video would address the why and how to keep them away.
Use a systemic insecticide to ensure preventative protection against them. We use this here: amzn.to/3MLTewE
@@SharkeysFloralGreenhouses Thank-you so much for your reply. I do love the red geraniums but I don't like fighting the worms. I will check out the link you sent me for the insecticide.
Hello, got my first geranium. The geranium i bought is already blooming a full bulb.
About to repot it, how large of a pot would you recommend.
Depends how big it is now, but you can jump up to much larger pot and it will fill in.
Great advice and tips Scot 😊
Thank you!
