I dig mine up end September, put in a pot, bring indoors (just removing dead leaves) and water a bit. I keep by a sunny window, enjoy the flowers. Replant in warm early summer
Yes! This is what my mother has done as long as I can remember. I suppose she treats it as a perennial because my mother is from a part of Mexico where freezing temps never happen and geraniums are out all year round
I like to prune them and bit, clean them up and place them in a sunny window. Give them some food and watch them bloom in the house during the gloomy winter months! I am also in PA outside of Philadelphia. Nice video😊
This blows my mind. My grandfather told me this is EXACTLY what my great-grandmother did with her geraniums, and I couldn't fathom how it would work. Thanks for showing us!
I keep indoor as houseplant,my zone is 3, take pots outdoor after last frost days, even winter time, put in front of south windows,it keeps flowering all year round.
I just take the pot, leaves and flowers still on, and put it in my cool unfinished basement. In late spring, I bring it up, cut it back and top with a good layer of compost. Same for my calllas and canas.
@JoyFuralle nope. I imagine the size of the pot would be important as a smaller pot may well dry out faster (and thus for a longer period of time). These pots are fairly large at around 20".
I've never overwintered before so I'm new to all this. I've watched several videos on overwintering geraniums, but this is the best one I've seen so far. Great visual instructions. BTW... love your grandma!
This video was recommended to me and I'm so happy it was! I also live in Eastern PA, I really want to save a beautiful Geranium I got from my favorite Nursery this past spring, and this was just the information I need to do that! Mine is magenta with a white splash in the middle! I love how you mention your grandmother and those memories as well!
This is a great method to overwinter geranium! But make sure your garage does not get down to freezing temps. It has to be at least just above freezing for the geranium to survive.
Thank you so much for this video. I'm tight for space and have 20 baskets to fill every year. This will save me so much money, to spend on more flowers of course. Best video on overwintering bare root! Hope to be successful 🙏🏻 😊
Those pieces you clip off in the spring (with a few 'nodes') can also be rooted in small pots in a sunny window. It's a good way to make additional plants, beyond overwintering. When they look as though they are thriving, transplant to its summer pot. I have about a 50-75% success rate with my new starts, probably better if I had ideal conditions.
@@AlieBoring When they begin to root, they usually begin to show growth and sprout leaves and send out 'branches'. Don't keep too wet or they will rot.
Thank you for saying what I needed to hear about deciding whether to store them. Usually I bring my giant geraniums into our dining room for the winter and they bloom all winter. But this year I’m having construction done and I don’t have the space so I’ve been trying to decide whether to bring them in or just let them go. They aren’t special in any way except that they’re really large. Maybe I’ll keep a few cuttings but I think I’m going to just leave them outside to die in cold and start over in the spring. When you spoke about your grandmother’s geraniums, I remembered the red geraniums that I saw hanging from window boxes in Spain many years ago.
Always enjoy your sediments on memory plants. Funny you should mention the geraniums, a funny memory for me. About 10-15 years ago I had a not-so-great geranium variety that I was going to let live out the summer in its pot mixed in with the other summering houseplants. About 5 years before that a friend at a past employer made a few leaf cuttings of her oxalis which did very well for me, so well they seeded in that sad little geranium pot that summer. I feel the geranium outsmarted me so the two will be together forever.
such a lovely plant They remind me of my grandmother who had vivid red. The only issue is the snails and slugs which feast on them in Spring .In Italy / Croatia/Greece/Spain/Malta they are on every balcony , patio, stair case etc .......look amazing !!!!
thats a really interesting way to overwinter Them, your granny is very creative and it is so nice that you do it the same way, i cut them back and put them with the pot in the cellar down with some Day Light, thx devin for sharing greetings from austria 😇 😇
Thanks for the info Devin, I'm wondering if you've ever tried to root the cuttings that you remove in the spring. I think it would be worth a try for those favorites.
Great info! I really appreciated it. Great job at helping me to know what I need to. Last year they just came inside my home and lived with me. But they didn’t flower well this year. Gorgeous leaves and shapes. Large beautiful plants, but only a handful of blooms all year. Was that because they didn’t have to be cold and “shut down” for winter, so to speak. I’d love to know if you have an answer for me! Thanks again. You’re just wonderful!
It’s not likely the cold but like I mentioned, when they continue growing on the old woodier growth they tend to flower less. That’s the benefit of cutting them back harder in the spring
When I store mine, I surround the plant with cedar shavings from the pet store in a paper bag. All my plants were just fine in Spring. Even my canna roots.
That was a lovely pink! I have one similar. Gonna over winter it. Maybe get some cutting in spring. They only cost 30 cents for a pack of 24 but they like my garden and I'm giving them a chance. Thanks for the vid.
Do you spritz the roots at all during the winter! Or do you let it stay dry. I was thinking about putting it in an attic storage space. It's pretty dry up there. Will they shrivel and dry or should you try to prevent that if they do?
Hello! I trimmed-back my geraniums just yesterday (11.03) 😬 The next morning your video showed-up in my feed 😑 Think they'll be able to callous over?? PS I turned mine upside down, just like your Grandma ❤
My question is whether or not to trim back roots while overwintering or just before replanting in the spring? Surely, some of the roots, particularly the ends, die back.
My basement is very damp; the sump pump runs constantly and we also keep a dehumidifier going all year round. I have another cold room, but it's not dark. I imagine in a sturdier brown paper bag, or maybe an extra one inside the other, it would be dark enough? It's not bright, but it's no basement.
I have 7 mature geraniums. I’ve always cleaned them up removing buds and dead leaves so the plant maintains it’s energy. Overwintered in garage and water from the bottom. I’ll give your method a try with one and see how it does. I’ll also keep the branch cutting for rooting. Why throw them away?
After bring it up 6 weeks before Mother’s Day, you trim it, then do you plant it and begin watering too? Or did you put it back in the bag? You didn’t really say what to do after trimming it back....
Great information. Thank you so very much. Zone 3/4 here. Zoning is changing so that’s why I have both numbers here. My father kept my mother’s geraniums alive every year in his garage. I haven’t bought any over the years because the money hasn’t been there to build a garage. Basement is finished so not cold enough. I have seen other videos on this technique but, yours has been the most thorough. Liked and subscribed! ❤️🇨🇦
Just take cuttings, let then dry a little, like for 20-30 mins, and then put back into soil... in no time new grows appears and they bloom all winter on a sunny window, and go back into garden in spring... ❤
