This is what always got me about Chuck claiming that Jimmy isn't a real lawyer. Speaking as someone who took and failed it twice, there is NO WAY that a person can pass the exam without demonstrating a significant degree of capability as a lawyer. It really is proof that you can do the job.
On the other hand, it is entirely possible to graduate from law school- even a prestigious law school- and forgot absolutely everything you've learned in a handful of months.
Jimmy proved himself. He really did. And what was Chuck's response to what, by all rights, should have been the proudest moment of Jimmy's life? A campaign of sabotage, to keep the little brat in his place.

I mean, he put in all that work to be able to practice law, and then he starts doing things that he knows will jeopardize his law license. He does put in a lot of work on some of his schemes, like getting Mesa Verde back to Kim, but it really was not his place to just decide to "give" it to her. This is not how a reputable attorney operates. It seemed like he just couldn't help backsliding into his old ways.
Don't get me wrong, I love the show, and one of my law professors thought it was pretty awesome, too (and he taught my ethics class). One thing I have to credit Jimmy on, he (grudgingly) admitted that the Sand Piper class action case was too big for him and Chuck to work on by themselves. And he did quite a bit to help Chuck with the whole electromagnetic field allergy thing, and I was pissed at Chuck for not showing Jimmy more gratitude for all he did for him. • @SteelBallRun1890
      @SteelBallRun1890 4 роки тому +115

      I don't think it's hostility.
I think he's so used to expecting Slippin' Jimmy that he thought it was an elaborate joke by Jimmy and was still trying to term that a prank was the best possible answer.
Look at Chuck's face as the scene goes on, he's still entertaining Jimmy, but when Jimmy said University of Samoa, Chuck seems to know what it is, but he doesn't see it as a prestigious school. So, he starts accepting him as a lawyer BUT only a lawyer by technicality in some unknown school. He was still way below Chuck and he probably hoped that Jimmy would just go on to fail at this, or, knowing Jimmy, he'll keep at this but never get anywhere.
Note that a lot of this is still just interpretation based on mannerisms, on my end. But yes, I don't think Chuck was always quick to hate on Jimmy, he hates him for sure, but only when given absolute power that Chuck thinks he'll mishandle.

All Chuck had to say, the only thing he had to day was: You really did this? And then give his brother a smile. He should have celebrated Jimmy passing the bar exam. Instead all he could do is treat his brother with contempt.
The thing is that Chuck doesn't want Jimmy to change. Because that would mean Chuck might have to treat him with respect. Chuck is horrified by the idea that Jimmy might want to be treated as a peer or equal. He simply cannot allow that. Better Call Saul is about choices, and Chuck made a terrible choice for the sake of his own ego.

    • @SteelBallRun1890
      @SteelBallRun1890 4 роки тому +14

@@pittland44 idk, the most recent episode has shown that some people simply doesn't change, or they end up in the situation one way or another.
I mean what's stopping Jimmy from being a good lawyer after Chuck died? If you let one bad influence shape your life moving forward then that's just you looking for excuses to blame.
The latest episode, Howard has been good to him and even offered him a job to be a lawyer at a good firm. Instead he takes this as offense, continues with being a "criminal" lawyer, buys bowling balls and destroys Howard's car. How is Chuck to blame for this? The same reason you can't blame the Schwartz for every wrong thing in Walter's life, Jimmy would've ended up as Saul even if Chuck wasn't there.
And that's the beautiful thing about this. Chuck was a horrible person, who was actually right. Jimmy with a law degree is like a chimp with a machinegun.

@@SteelBallRun1890 Chuck was only right because he provoked everything. Jimmy was a guy with great morals who didn't care much about the law when it felt it was unfair, so he was willing to bend it to help people in need (like Kim who deserved Mesa Verde for example), while Chuck dutifully respected the law but only to serve his burning hatred and selfish desires, Chuck wants Jimmy to be his slave and nothing else, and he will destroy anyone who gets close to him and might give him importance, be it Ernesto or Kim.
Chuck is also a coward who lets Howard take the blame for his action.
Chuck ensured that every time Jimmy did anything right, he would be punished for it, without Chuck's hatred, at worst Jimmy would have been a little con-artist who didn't do real harm to anyone. This is one of the saddest scenes in the whole show. The fact that Jimmy passed the bar while working full time and fully lived up to all his brothers “expectations” in the most hard-working, American dream way only to be manipulated by his brother to stay beneath him is just heart breaking.
Imagine how good Jimmys life could have been if he had a brother with a morsel of compassion.

Seriously. At this point in the story, Jimmy really had changed. He'd done everything Chuck asked him to do: he abandoned the "Slippin Jimmy" lifestyle, cut all ties with his old associates, moved to Albuquerque, took a job in the HHM mailroom, and completely stayed out of trouble for years. And on top of that, he earned himself a law degree in his spare time through sheer initiative and hard work. Yeah, he took classes at an online school but he still followed all the rules, put in the work, studied the law, and passed the exams. But Chuck couldn't accept the fact that his little brother had actually bettered himself, so he actively sabotaged Jimmy's career before it even began, and then lied by blaming it on his law partners. What a piece of shit.

From, "It's not Georgetown or anything," where Chuck went to, "the bar exam's a mother -- for me [at least]," acknowledging how how he was inspired by the two most important people to him, his big bro and Kim. I mean, yeah, Jimmy-as-Saul went nuclear and got Chuck's insurance canceled, but after all Chuck did to hurt his brother and the lack of *honest* communication, I don't think there's anything that could have hurt Jimmy more than telling him he just never mattered that much to him. And so, regardless that Jimmy went to crappy schools. He passed the exact same exam that every Harvard Law graduate has to pass. They're in the same club. The bar exam isn't dumbed down for you if you fail it the first time, or any other time. You have to take that exam again with everyone else.

I love how they managed to create a dynamic where both sides are in the wrong. It was a genius decision to make Saul into a far more sympathetic character; he was a teen reprobate who tried his absolute best to make it the honest way and eventually was so beaten down by trying to make it in the same way as his brother that eventually he turned to what he was naturally good at. And they mirrored it with Mike being tempted back into the game too. Chuck is right in many ways, but he is motivated by a desire to see himself as superior to Jimmy, who despite being a waste of space in his early years, is a far more likeable and genuine person than Chuck could ever hope to be. That's why he claims to be the only one who really 'knows' Jimmy, to try and dismiss everyone else's affection for him as misguided

But as we see in Season 2, Jimmy was given the option to "play it straight" and be a respectable lawyer with David & Main. But in the end he sabotages it intentionally because he can't be the kind of lawyer who works at a firm and plays it straight. He needs to do things "his" way.
However, I can see the argument that if Chuck had been a better brother and mentor and had been there for Jimmy then maybe things wouldn't have gone off the rails. The problem is that Jimmy was always doing a hustle as a lawyer.
Though, as we see in Season 5, Howard wants to hire Jimmy at HHM after all those years wasted. And that's knowing Jimmy is "unscrupulous" as mentioned. So who knows how things might have played out.

He shows the definite signs of a classic bitter introvert to an extrovert. His brother is naturally amazing with people and has great chemistry with literally anyone he meets. Chuck doesn’t have that natural charisma and ability so he poured himself into law.
He had to view his brother as a lesser being. If he didn’t, he would have to accept all of the things his brother has, that he does not. He used all of his brothers quirks and cons to rationalize that his brother wasn’t perfect and he was. So when he finds out that his brother is not only naturally great at the things he sucks at. He is also naturally great at the things that chuck is as well. And chuck felt threatened. If he allowed Jimmy to be made partner and to make him a legal equal. He would have to accept that his brother is not a lesser being. And that would completely destroy his own identity of himself
I, myself, am a natural introvert. And I have a younger brother, like Jimmy, who is amazing with people. When I was in high school I watched my brother be popular and social and all the things I wanted to be. And I hated him for it. But I have grown past that bitterness and have come to realize that it was my own issues, not my brother, that prevented me from being what I wanted to be. Now, even though we live in different states, we try to talk on the phone with each other everyday. He’s become one of my best friends and favorite people. And that’s because I have done my best to see past through my own issues.
I see a lot of myself in Chuck, and I understand a lot of the things he did. Still don’t agree with what he did. He truly screwed up his brothers life and is one of the main causes of the person Jimmy becomes. And the thing that pisses me off, is the fact he refuses to accept his own responsibility.

I don't think it was just Introvert v Extrovert. This is deeper than that. Chuck was a perfectionist yet there are times that despite his best effort, he just didn't get what he wants. In a way this is where the brothers are similar. In the 4th season finale, the "Winner takes it all" alludes to both of them. Chuck uses his genius and influence to get what he wants while Jimmy uses underhanded tactics. The author made Chuck "introverted" to make him easy to symphatise with, especially with his mental condition. But, I think he is just as "bad" as Jimmy can be or even worse, it's just that his "evil" is more contained while Jimmy cannot help himself.
In the first season, Chuck manipulated Jimmy in surrendering the Sandpiper case to HMM, the supposed bread and butter of Jimmy's career, disguised as "concern" towards Jimmy. He even tried to sabotage it by acting all stupid during their meetup with schweikart. He again showed his manipulative side during the Mesa Verde retainership which lead to Jimmy's actions. Then he blames him inside the court, his "home court" perse, no pun intended, how precious Jimmy is. But, in truth those childhood or years of Jimmy's life were just little years of his life and after his divorce with his wife, all he sees with everyone becoming happier than him are guilty one way or another. It's not just Jimmy who is his enemy, it includes Kim, the neighbor, the lineman, the insurance company and even Hamlin. He is a greedy man like Jimmy but then again, he is a bigger man than Jimmy and if his greed cannot be satiated then he might implode or transform to something worse which he did.

JustChizzin Oh absolutely, why do you think the dude is in so much denial. This is a guy who has defined himself on his Jesus like morality. He spent his entire life considering himself a master of ethics. And then his brother comes along, someone who he considers to be one of the worst of society, and shows that he is capable of reaching the same position as himself. That he has the capabability of becoming a partner in a firm he spent his entire life building. And he snapped and did some pretty shitty immoral things. If he accepts that what he did was morally wrong, he would have to accept that he isn’t as good as he convinced himself that he is. And that would completely destroy the way he views himself.
After the trial, a hell of a lot of people got to see Chuck as who he really was, and it drove him over the edge. Public perception is super important to him, and that trial did quite a number on that. Killing himself probably felt like the only way to truly escape from this hell he felt he was in

That’s an incredibly surface-level explanation. Just because you’re just jealous of your extrovert brother, doesn’t mean that chuck was with Jimmy. That’s putting introverts in an awful light as well, and chuck definitely seems more extroverted to begin with. He would literally have no reason whatsoever to be jealous of jimmy. It’s the other way around, clearly. He may of been jealous of Jimmy’s natural talent, but it doesn’t come down to extroversion vs introversion.

He had done everything Chuck asked him to do: he cut all ties with his old "Slippin' Jimmy" life and associates, moved to Albuquerque, took a job in the mailroom at HHM, and completely stayed out of trouble. He had been living an honest, law-abiding life for years while also obtaining a law degree through the limited options available to him. No fraud, no cheating, no scams. He followed the rules, put in the work, took the classes, studied the books, passed the exams, and made himself a lawyer. Jimmy had proved his commitment to becoming a better man. But Chuck never really wanted him to become a better man, he just wanted to keep him under his thumb forever. If Chuck had just hired Jimmy as a junior associate (or at the very least recommended him to another firm) Jimmy might have spent the rest of his life as an honest, straight-laced attorney. Instead Chuck actively sabotaged Jimmy's career prospects at every turn, which drove Jimmy out into the sketchy fringes of the legal profession where con artistry thrives. Afterwards he allowed Jimmy to do whatever he wanted, including entering a respected firm like Davis & Maine. It was only when Jimmy broke the law and sabotaged Chuck's work life that Chuck wanted to take Jimmy's law license away. Something that he absolutely deserved to have happen. Chuck loved Jimmy, but he didn't trust him to be a lawyer. Would Jimmy have become as bad as he was if Chuck had supported him? Maybe, maybe not. This scene hits me like a ton of bricks. I've been a screwup my whole life, but the past 5 years I've really turned it around. I went back to school, got my degree, and currently pursuing a career doing what I love. I've worked my butt off to turn my life around and I've finally found success and stability... and there have been multiple people who I thought were in my corner react with nothing but thinly-veiled disgust and jealousy. I remember a couple friends I had finding out about something special I had accomplished career-wise, and their reactions were basically note-for-note how Chuck reacted to Jimmy passing the bar here. These people weren't happy for me at all.
Most of your "friends" and "loved ones" don't actually want what's best for you. They want you to remain the same loser you always have been so they can feel better about themselves. When you no longer fit that role, they no longer have any need for you. It sucks, but the only thing you can really do is cut them out of your life and move on. That's what I did.

bruh that's so true. once people see you a certain way, as a "screw up" or a "goofball", they can't ever unsee that version of you that exists in their mind. they wanna keep you down because the idea that people like us could get our shit together fills them with envy.
We lived such an easy carefree life compared to them, they had to work hard to get to where they are. How dare we act like their peer. That's their mindset.

I wouldn't call it jealousy. Jimmy has an audacity to him that just gets under Chucks skin.
"If Kim can do it, maybe I can do it too." - Yeah, Kim is a prodigy and he just compares himself to her while working in the Mailroom.
"Its like losing your virginity." - Compairing practicing the law to Sex, real classy.
He even interrupted him while he was dictacing some really long and complicadet shit into his recorder. I'm not saying Jimmy deserved this treatment by Chuck, far from it, Chuck was a complete asshole, but Jimmy never quite managed to get his sensibilities. I guess, he just trusted his own brother too much.
