  • Available at all Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace Hardware, Menards, True Value , Amazon and Do-It-Best stores. Also available at Home Hardware and on Amazon in Canada. Customers who bought this fill valve at Home Depot (U.S.), have given it a 4.7 star rating out of 5 stars while customers at Lowe's have given it a 5 star rating out of 5 stars. In this video, Jeff Patterson of Home Repair Tutor shows how easy it is to fix a running toilet or noisy toilet with the Fluidmaster 400H ® Toilet Fill Valve. It is the most quietest fill valve with the most powerful flush. The 400H comes with both tank and bowl water control for a more powerful flush. The adjustability of the bowl water helps newer, 1.28 gpf and lower flow toilets flush efficiently. Fluidmaster invented the fill valve technology back in 1958.

    Okay, as 75 yo female, this was my first attempt at doing this. I bought the same unit in the video. Everything worked great, but on the third flush, the tank wouldn't fill at all. It was acting as though the water was off, but it was definitely on. I had to drain the tank again, took the unit back for a replacement (same model), and the replacement now works. I guess I can add plumbing skills to my resume!

    I'm a woman, and I got this done in 10 mins. Thanks for these instructions. It gave me the confidence to run out and buy the product from walmart for less than $9, and I replaced it in no time. The old one was starting to take about 15 mins to fill the tank and I knew something was wrong. Now I'm back in business.

    i bought my home, new, 20 years ago. I started having trouble with my toilet and determined the fault lay with both the fill valve and flapper. I have zero plumbing experience but, after watching your video, decided to try to fix it myself. I spent $25 on a new fill valve and flapper set and was able to remove the old fill valve and install the new one. It took me a lot longer than your video suggested but that was because whoever put the nut on the fill valve under the toilet must have been extremely strong. My toilet is only a few inches from my bathtub so I had to work on an angel and it took me about a half hour to get that nut off using plyers. Aside from that, the remainer of the install went quickly and smoothly. Finding your video convinced me to try to fix my toilet myself and saved me a couple of hundred dollars in plumber's fees. Thank you so much.

    Hey 3 years ago did remodel in my house. Bathroom $12,000. About 6-7 weeks ago toilet started to howl. Timed it was like 5 seconds.. kept getting longer and longer up to a minute and 15 seconds or so. Called it the Chewbaka toilet from Star Wars. So today was the day to put in new float device. Did the normal stuff flush sponge out water. Started to try to loosen that plastic nut that holds the float device in. No way. The guys that installed had it on way way to tight. Had to take the tank off and go out in garage on work bench and take a hammer and screw driver to get it off. Temp above zero today so not to cold in garage. But bought the Fluid Master 400, installed no fuss no muss.. excellent product.. and Chewbaka is gone..

    Craziest thing. I just installed my new Fluidmaster, and three days later it was hissing (water running). It had some gotten some large particles caught in the valve already. I cleaned it out and it's good as new again.

    I’ve changed flappers before & it was a hit or miss even when it was the exact replacement. In this case we thought for the price of this kit $16 & this video, I’d try it & if it didn’t work then call a plumber $100 just to look at it.
    The change out was easier than I thought although the flapper didn’t want to seat correctly. I took it off, put the old one on, matched exactly, so i put the new one back on & pushed it in a little then it started filling. I flushed several times to equal the same water levels in the tank & bowl. Very easy, wish you tube was around in the past I would have saved a ton doing my own changes. I’m going to buy an extra kit for our other bathroom to have on hand. Thanks for this video, easy and to the point!!

    I know nothing about toilets. Had issues filling for months on and off. Sister wakes me up in the middle of the night. Toilet won't stop running and turns out fill valve came apart. Mother bought a new one. It was this one, i followed the video and got it done! Toilet works again and it's quieter. Kinda freaky. One thing though: would have taken 15 minutes if the old valve was harder than expected to remove and the toilet is in a tight corner.

    Pro Tip - These Fluidmasters are great but they still tend to wear out after a few years and you gotta replace them. If you're replacing the valve with the same kind of value, you don't have to bother taking the entire old one out and detaching the supply line. Just slide the clear plastic lock collar on the post up and then slide the entire top assembly up off the bottom post. Slide the new one on to your desired height, and push the lock collar back down. Then cut your fill hose to length and attach it to the flush tube. This would also be a good time to go ahead and replace the flapper with a Korky Plus to save future headaches. Done!

    • @FluidmasterInc
      @FluidmasterInc  4 роки тому +4

      Fluidmaster strongly suggests not to remove the entire top part of the fill valve by raising or lifting the lock ring. This action can damage the valve or create other functional issues. In place of purchasing an entirely new valve (and throwing away the unused portion) we recommend replacing the Top Cap Assembly with our model 385. Replacing the top does not require any tools or replacing a water line, it is the safest way to repair the valve and because the top cap is universal it will fit 400 series valves including PerforMAX and older 400A models.

My shut off valve was leaking when tightened and it turned out both filler valve and toilet connector need to be replaced to be leak-free.
    Toilet connector was rigid and could not be reconnected properly.

    My previous fill valve had no fill tube, and my bowl water level was fine. So, my toilet doesn't require a fill tube into the overflow pipe. Can I re-position my Fluidmaster fill tube into the tank to reclaim that water that is wasted?

    I installed the fluid master as shown. Everything works fine except every two or three minutes the fill valve runs for about 3 seconds. I checked to make sure flapper not leaking. Any suggestions on how to prevent fill valve from intermittently running?

    • @FluidmasterInc
      @FluidmasterInc  2 роки тому

      Fluidmaster recommends checking to ensure the refill tube was correctly installed. The tube should be on a clip held above the overflow pipe. If the refill tube is slid or pushed into the overflow pipe this could cause the refill tube to leak into the bowl. The second thing to check is the flush valve lock nut. Make sure you tightened the lock nut ½ turn beyond hand tight. For additional help or to speak with a technical services agent contact by phone, email or chat. When he shows what’s in the box, it’s different than what was in mine. My box (purchased at HD) didn’t contain anything other than the fill valve itself. So I went back to HD and had to look through 6 boxes before I could find one with both the instruction booklet and the white plastic nut (5 of 6 boxes didn’t have the nut). Now, in watching the video again, it appears that there is an additional piece that wasn’t in any of the boxes. Is that necessary? I don’t really feel like going back to HD and exchanging for another one where they’ve all been opened and pawed through by customers and have missing parts.

    I have a low flow toilet with a low water level in the bowl. Can I use the 400H to increase the bowl water level?

    • @FluidmasterInc
      @FluidmasterInc  2 роки тому +1

      The bowl water level adjustment screw on the 400H allows you to put more or less water into the bowl without changing the water level in the tank. To ensure your bowl can get more water or a higher level first raise the water level inside the bowl by pouring water into the bowl. Once you have reached the height you want wait 10-20 seconds. If the water drains down the new level inside the bowl is the most or highest level that bowl water can be set at. If the water stays at your desired level use the 400H to set the water in the bowl to the new height. For help or additional questions contact Fluidmaster at fluidmaster.com/support to email or chat with an agent or call toll free at 800-631-2011 to speak with an agent.

    • @FluidmasterInc

      Yes that white piece inside the threaded shank of the valve is a flow regulator and is also optional. You may remove it without damaging the toilet fill valve. The flow regulator will slow the fill time but it will also minimize any pipe knock within older homes. Can someone/anyone explain to me how this model can give you "a more powerful flush"? I have three of these performaxs installed in my homes with the two adjustments. I can see how the valve for bowl can slow the rate of water when refilling which would lead to less water in the bowl but at max setting it would be just like the old series -without the valve where it would flow at max rate. So what this valve does essentially is slow down max flush when dialed down anything other than max. How is that helpful when your dialing back the bowl amount and how is MAX setting on the bowl and different than not having a valve at all??? It's not

    • @FluidmasterInc
      @FluidmasterInc  Рік тому

      Newer toilets use less water and need a faster refill time. The 400H allows you to speed up the bowl refill time without changing the water level in the tank to ensure you have the proper flush. If the bowl does not fill up all the way the bowl will flush slowly or not at all. This timing is important to maximize the flush power of the toilet. For more information we can be reached 5:30 am to 5:00 pm Mon- Friday PST. Options for contact are Live Chat and Email at techsupport@fluidmaster.com/support or toll free 800-631-2011.

    When I set the bowl height to the max allowed by the blue knob on the fill valve, the toilet refills very loudly due to the water pressure going down to the tank. Is there a way to decrease this noise?

    • @FluidmasterInc
      @FluidmasterInc  Рік тому

      The only way to decrease the noise without changing the refill knob is to turn down the shut off valve on the wall. By decreasing flow you should be able to decrease the sound. The more important question is why do you have the refill knob maxed out? If you need a faster refill it may be easier to adjust the flapper rather than max out the refill knob. Visit our website Fluidmaster.com/support for videos and troubleshooting tips or e-mail / live chat with a technician or call toll free 800-631-2011. What if the red gasket isn't on the fill valve already?

    • @FluidmasterInc
      @FluidmasterInc  3 роки тому

      If the red gasket or “Shank Washer” is not on the valve then simply locate the gasket and place it on yourself. The gasket has a tapered end and a flat side on the other end (bottom and top). Place the flat side up onto the fill valve threaded shank and slide to the top of valve until flat side comes in contact with the shank stop. For help with your installation please call Fluidmaster at 800 631-2011.

      Make sure the fill valve is set so it stands 3 inches taller than the overflow pipe. If it is not then you will need to adjust the valve taller to increase the water level inside the tank.

    • @FluidmasterInc
      @FluidmasterInc  Рік тому

      Thank you for your question, it could be the flapper but here are a few things to look for A) if you have the refill tube shoved down or placed inside the overflow pipe pull it out and reattach to the overflow pipe using our refill clip. This will stop a siphon from occurring and stop the leak and B) Clean the bottom of the tank along with the drain seat that the flapper sits on, if you can’t get the tank to stop leaking with a new flapper then it might be time to change the flush valve. So I got a weird problem which I am unable to find the solution for. After installing the Fluidmaster fill valve, water keeps filling bowl at intervals of couple of minutes. This happens even without flushing. Once again, it isn’t leaking but just filling the bowl in minutes interval. I feel like it’s wasting a lot of water to keep feeling the bowl from time to time. How do I fix it.

    • @FluidmasterInc
      @FluidmasterInc  3 роки тому

      The valve noise you are experiencing is alerting you to water loss inside the tank. When the toilet makes a "Ghost Flush" it is turning on and off very quickly to refill water into the tank.

      The #1 cause for a ghost flush is a worn flapper valve. I recommend cleaning the drain seat (the area the flapper is covering) and the flapper. If that does not stop the ghost flush replacing the flapper should stop the leak.
      Here is the best option for replacing the flapper: ua-cam.com/video/PCl-kH7g_5w/v-deo.html

    BUYERS BNEWARE: The Fluidmaster 400A has a major flaw. It takes 4 mins to refill your tank where the old style takes less than a minute. The issue is theres a white rubber stopper in the valve that you must remove for the tank to fill faster. Why did the company did this?? Stupidity?? yes. Some of us needs to double flush as first time around doesn't clean everything. It appear they added this stopper in newer models.

    What’s the difference between 400H and 400AH?

    • @FluidmasterInc
      @FluidmasterInc  4 роки тому +1

      The 400A is a standard refill valve that controls the water in the tank, it controls fill time and water level. The 400H is a performance fill valve that also controls the water in the tank. The 400H fill valve has an additional adjustment for the water in the toilet bowl using an independent adjustment knob. The 400H can be adjusted to let more or less water into the toilet bowl without affecting the level of water in the tank.

      @@mytube2013 The 400H allows you to control the level of water in the toilet bowl which the 400AH does not allow you to do. The 400AH allows you to control the water only in the tank.

      Fluidmaster Toilet Repair Videos On fluidmaster website, it says 400AH has roller clamp to control fill level in the bowl.

    • @FluidmasterInc
      @FluidmasterInc  4 роки тому

      The AH does not come with a bowl refill dial instead it only comes
      with a (Roller) clamp that restricts water to the bowl. The AH is taller than
      the H version by 1 inch and comes with a regulator which tops the speed of
      refill by 2 gallons per minute.
      The H version our newest mode is more adjustable in that it has a
      separate bowl refill dial that allows easier adjustment to increase or decrease
      the amount of water going to the bowl, without changing the amount of water in
      the tank. The valve does not have a regulator but a restrictor which allows a
      faster flow than the AH version and can be as fast as 4 gallons per minute and
      higher.

    I don’t understand that blue .. water, bowl valve

    • @FluidmasterInc
      @FluidmasterInc  4 роки тому

      The blue knob is a dial that allows you to increase or decrease the amount of water going back into the toilet bowl during the flush. Like the Float adjustment rod that allows you to control how much water fills the tank the blue knob allows you to control how much water fills the bowl.

    just lovely if the below tank water connection and fill valve stem hole are easily accessible as shown in this video....but American Standard toilet tank we have was designed by idiots. and it took me 2 hours to "finger tighten" the stem nut under the tank and another half hour to attach the water line fitting. Rather than finger tighten I offer a single finger in appreciation of all design idiots. And I think you know which finger that is.
