This video will show you how I prepare a concrete floor for our polyaspartic garage floor coatings. We're using DeWALT battery grinders, DeWALT HEPA vacuums, and a few other DeWALT tools to make our jobs easier.
I always grind my concrete floors before applying either epoxy or polyaspartic coatings. I want to create a very good bond between the concrete and the base coat. The DeWALT 7" and 5" battery grinders with the DeWALT diamond cup wheels worked excellently as you can see in the video opening up the surface to accept the coating.
This year, 2024, I'll be a brand ambassador for DeWALT which means I'll be able to show you how DeWALT's tools can help you improve your workflow on the job.
I feel like the tools we used in this video made our jobs preparing the concrete much easier than the competitor's tools we used to use.

that's top notch quality work.
Here's a tip for you. I used to use regular ear muffs, but recently I bought a soundcore noise canceling ear muffs for only about $70. It cancels the noise much better than regular ear muffs. Plus you can listen to music or take phone calls with bluetooth connectivity. The charge lasts 44 hours.
Turned out great! What’s your guys opinion on charging a deposit before putting down a floor like this?
you could always just buy/use a generator if you're worried about popping customers' breakers.. most come with 220v outlets also
a nice set up is Dynamic Diamond DDG 1220 “BEAST” Concrete Floor Grinder or WerkMaster Concrete Floor Grinder. both grinders can do Concrete Surface Preparation/Profile. Both grinders you can stand up for edges and main floor. For power, Generator, propane or tap into electric box. Your multi-Tool works great for corners.
hey, I am not social media person. I just pop on your page once in a while. I have been in concrete construction 55 plus years[retired]. keep up the good work Mike. thanks Keith
Awesome, thanks Keith!
Excellent video, I've been debating on having my 20x20 garage floor done. I'm just concerned about durability, slipperiness, and any maintenance. I'm very particular about how my stuff looks. I reside in MI, so lots of snow, salt, etc.
We're in Maine, I feel these are the best coatings for all the concerns you mention. We do a lot of them and have for 20 years.
Mike, I have a few low spots in my garage that water flows to. It’s especially a problem in the winter with a heated garage. The water flows to the garage door and the pedestrian door, freezing under and in front of the doors. Is there a product to float the low spots and the spalling? Or are they different products?
This is why I have two circuits in my garage
👍
what cup wheel brand you like? been curious about the dewalts and like them so far when we polish. but haven't found a really good cup wheel brand that offers several different grits
Thats a huge boat house would of been cool to see where the house is located
Have you ever had to remove an existing coating and replaced it?
Hi Mike - for a new slab that is going to get an epoxy coating right away, can it be finished in such a way where you don't have to do any grinding?
I don't recommend finishing the concrete "not as smooth" so you don't have to grind. Grindng is your best option, or shot blasting. For the long run.
Hi Mike, I have a large shop in the back of the house that I purchased. It has a large slab that I don't know if they put a moisture barrier under it when they poured it. How do I protect from moisture for my new coating? Thanks.
Moisture vapor barrier epoxy
I use it a lot. It makes sense to use it whenever in doubt. Works the same as any prime coat for epoxy floors and most will even take flakes. That and a coat of polyaspartic on top and you've got a pretty strong floor
clients always look at me funny when I ask to see the electric panel.
If the surface is rough and was never finish smoothed do you still need to grind in order to apply a polyspardic or epoxy coating ?
yes
@@daveyconcrete9801 For what purpose ? Doesn't the grinding provide a rough surface ? If the surface is already rough with no finish, paint etc, what is the grinding doing ?
@@JDCrae It flattens and evens out the surface as well as cleaning the surface by removing the top layer.
what you think you may be saving in not grinding you will pay for in extra layers of epoxy.
Exposing the "pores" in the surface for adhesion is important. Cleaning the concrete is also important, both done with the diamond cup wheel. Sometimes the top layer of paste/cream is "softer" than right underneath it so we like to remove it whether rough or smooth to get to a hard dense concrete for the coating to last a long time.
Can dewalt give me tools to use for my job?
Short.
