@@suzy.9877 The only advice I have for you is to practice with your loved ones. Ask them to share a scenario and act accordingly. It really helped me and now I’m not afraid to hurt someone’s feelings when I’m uncomfortable.💖
best advice i’ve ever received for living alone: if you’re walking/running a lot, or at odd hours; big dog. it’s more intimidating. if you’re not home often, or a heavy sleeper; small dog. they’re more likely bark a lot and cause a ruckus. most thief/attackers are very concerned with being inconspicuous and will avoid a scene! also, a generic “home protected” sticker is a better detergent, putting the logo ones the companies give you for advertisement just tells a burglar how to turn off your specific system and how long they have! and get to know your neighbors! be involved in the community, so if anyone tries to slip in or out, there is no possible way to write off, “could be a boyfriend/moving in/service,” and they’re more likely to take a better look and get some kind of description on them!
My brother and several of my close family friends are prison guards, and after I bought my place and was living alone for a month I adopted my shepherd husky cross, and when I told them they all nodded and said ‘great call’. When I asked why, they said ‘directly from the mouth of babes - all of the inmates say ‘why the f*ck would I go to the house with a dog when two houses over they don’t have one? Makes no sense.’’ They said it’s hands down the biggest deterrent, and criminals hate dogs especially because they sense that they’re up to no good and are rarely fans. Definitely get a dog if you can, the unconditional love is enough but the protection is the cherry on top.
@@keeran02 I have a great dane and a small crossbreed and this is so true! The small one barks at EVERYTHING and it makes me mad, but now I'm kinda grateful for it ( my neighbors brobably still not so much 😅) and my poor GD is a soft giant but everyone fears her 🙈😅
I’m def getting one once I move into my house. Kits just me and 3 teenagers, and I’m always worried about the fact that the kids come home and I’m not there for a while after school because I’m still at work. I wish I could work earlier and get off when they are coming home but then they would almost certainly not go to school because they would just go back to sleep once I left 🤣
I just bought FOUR camera/doorbell components for myself and my three children (who live in apartments in other states) all because of your show. Thank you thank you thank you for making me aware and ACTING on that knowledge. Love your show!
Here’s what I’ve learned based on this and my experiences: If someone is aggressive enough for law enforcement and judges to take it seriously and grant a restraining order, they’re aggressive enough to violate the restraining order.
Yes but don't let that make you not get one. My bf have followed everything officers have told us regarding our situation. First send them one final message "don't contact me anymore" etc etc. Then if they contact you again or show up at your house it's now considered harassment and now law enforcement can do something which in our case once he showed up at my bfs my bf called the police and they showed up and he was still out front in his cat. After talking to us and him and us showing the cops our phones he was charged with 2 counts of harrassment (case still pending) when they told us he was getting ticketed they suggested we go file for protection orders. We did just that and in our cases he didn't show up to either hearing which in my state means the protection order is automatically made permanent. No here is the thing....we knew he'd violate it but we were sure to get all the proof when he did, as much as we could which has now resulted in 2 arrests (cases still pending) so now he's dug himself a nice grave to lay in. It's a slow process and we are fortunate enough the police have been mostly helpful. In the end he will likely be doing some jail time. They really should file restraining orders regardless of the likelihood they will violate cuz then they can actually be locked up which is the only way to get them to go away.
just here to say... I need more spooky themed over the next two months PLEASE. A paranormal themed episode sounds so fun. I always find myself gasping along with you both haha.
Restraining orders are basically “we will shake our finger at them WHEN they end up hurting you”. Then the system says “we didn’t see it coming”. Also, we had a no contact order and they gave our abuser our home address and work to inform him of the place he had to stay away from…
My ex got out of prison ( he was in for violent things he did to me then attempted escape.) They didn't notify me like they were supposed to. He was on house arrest. Took off the box. Came to where I was at 1 am with a gun. He's not allowed to have fired arms ever!!! I called police. They pulled him over outside my place. Called his probation officer who said have him report to them on Monday morning. To just go to the address he's assigned to. ????? Wtf? Seriously he's already tried to off me, and after doing years for it has come after me with a weapon and you pat him on the head and send him on his way. The restraining order is useless unless they end you.
my Sophie girl growled at everyone but was the sweetest and would def. attack if provoked but she def. slept thru my car getting broken into along with the Weim. 😂
My moms pitty was the sweetest never hurt a fly and then someone was attacking my mom and my pitty attacked the person and they tried to have her put down. Even though they were attacking us they still had a “case”
I needed this episode. I’m also a woman that lives alone, so while watching this I went to Amazon got a Ring, and now I’m looking into adopting a dog. Needed that wake up call
If you live in a house/apartment that you didn’t build, replace the screws for your door that are in the wall to large ones, so if people try to break down the door, it’s much harder and louder
Make sure you’re prepared to care for whatever dog you get. Research the breed and make sure you can handle their needs and energy levels. It varies greatly between breeds. If you already know all this, I’m sorry. I just wanted to make sure you did and didn’t go into adoption as a rash decision to stay safe because the dog needs to stay safe too and live a good life.
Just a tip for living alone that my dad taught me! Get the building manager, your dad, landlord, a handy friend or do it yourself, but replace the screws in your door plate! The standard ones are really short so it’s easy to kick the door in, if you replace it with a long screw that goes into the door frame it’ll be way harder to kick in if someone tries to break into your place! ❤️ also put a piece of wood in the window frame to prevent the window from being able to be opened all the way! And if you have a patio door put a piece of wood in the track between the door and the frame so it can’t be opened!
The piece of wood in the window or patio door is also really good when you have small kids so they cant open the door or window and get out or let someone in I taught my sons that me or my husband opens the door when someone rings the bell, they are not allowed
@@natureandrandomstufftry it and. See. It was tested on myth busters . 3 in” screws definitely stop someone trying to kick a door down/open even with them using ramming devices. Or at least not let them in ,long enough for others notice and call or check on what’s going on
My dog sounds like a massive, aggressive guard dog but is a 82 pound loveable lab. He didn't make a peep the whole first 6 months we had him so his first bark really took us by surprise bc he was still a skinny, lanky puppy with this really deep, loud bark. Most people are afraid of him just by the sound of him
I have 2 dogs, one of the lean, athletic pits, and a little Dachshund mix. The pit LOVES EVERYBODY. She doesn't have that sense that most dogs have about people not being good. The Dachshund mix on the other hand. Lord. I trust her judgment. She will not hesitate to bark. She hated the maintenance guy at my last apartment. He seemed ok, but because of her I kinda kept my distance. And she doesn't sound like a small dog either, she's got a big bark. If she hears anything sketchy outside she definitely let's me know. Which can be irritating sometimes, but at the same time I'm glad people can hear my dogs bark, especially since I live alone.
I have a black lab who’s 13 but has an incredible bark and the energy of a 3 year older puppy. He’s my bestfriend and I still get surprised when new people come over and are a little scared cause he’s loud and excited when he’s rlly just a cuddle buddy and wants some pets.
When my lab got her big girl bark as a puppy we were shocked too. Side note: I just listened to a new-ish podcast called Borderline about a woman in Texas who was kidnapped and assaulted … crazy story - you’ll have to listen to it. She asked her assailant “why me?” And he said “because you didn’t have a dog”.
Rottweilers are amazing. I support Alejandra getting one. They are so sweet and goofy, but I never felt more safe then when I was walking my rottweiler.
I have rhodesian ridgeback and she makes me feel so safe running in the forest and sleep at night ❤️ When my husband is out of town her guard mode gets activated to next level and i never feel unsafe at home with our kids. She cuddles us, loves even the neibgours kids and she thinks our 4monthd old kittens is her puppy. But with adults she doesn't know shes bit alert and set back at first.
My Rottweiler/ German Shepherd is so incredibly loyal. He’s a big baby and love bug until he senses danger and when he does I’d hate to be on the receiving end. He absolutely does not mess around when the time comes.
Absolutely love Rotties! Wanted one but End up falling in love with my Anatolian Shepard mix rescue, which are livestock guards. His always just sweet heart, quite and cuddly buddy I thought maybe he didn't get that instinct. Until a very sketchy man wander onto our property. BOOM all of sudden he was at heel giving the man death glare. When the man came towards me, my boy got into between us with a bark I never heard. Man took off, so glad I know my dog will protect me no matter what.
I have a very cute and adorable story about a rottweiler. One time I was going to visit my bff at her house for a noon gathering, and I was waiting for my Uber (that was like 3 minutes away) outside a subway station. Then one guy approached me and tried to do small talk, and I just prayed for my ride to arrive. Suddenly another guy with a huge rottweiler (unleashed) passed beihind me, but I made a little noice to get the dog's attention, and remove my attention for the talking stranger. The dog stopped, looked at me then at his owne, then walked towards me and stood right between the talking guy and I. Didn't move until my Uber arrived. He was protecting me 🥺🥺 and the owner was very annoyed lol.

I’m retired LEO & in Ella’s situation the police could have done much more. Firstly he never gave them a a name. If they called police they could have identified him to see if he was wanted, registered sex offender , criminal history etc. Secondly there are laws he broke, in my state at least, like trespassing, menacing, when he locked her in the room would be considered false imprisonment, stalking might apply and depending on the totality of the situation could have been arrested on the spot. At the very least they would have had to file an incident report that all this took place with his real name attached, officially trespassed him & filed it w campus police. I was amazed that they let him get away w o ever knowing his name especially in this particular situation where he nearly trapped/ abducted the woman. I could almost guarantee if I would have answered this call I would have arrested him to get him away from her for at least that night. This was not her fault at all. She is not to blame There are steps she could have taken to hopefully avoided all this. She should have asked before all this if he stayed there, name etc before helping him into a room. If he was a student it’d be on file if a hotel guest same thing. The fact she just trusted him is startling to me. Women need to always be on guard nowadays. It’s a shame but sadly a fact to keep y’all safe. I’ve instilled this into my 20yo daughter who’s in college. Always look strangers in the eyes, don’t pretend to be on the phone w a friend etc like you said. Just be very aware of your surroundings.
The striped man story reminded me about a story my dad told me from his childhood. He lived in a small house as a kid in the 70’s and slept on the couch bc he didn’t have a bedroom. The telephone was on an end table next to where he laid his head at night. One month, my grandma got a phone bill for several long distance calls made almost every night. When she found out the phone number that was being called nightly, she called it and a woman answered saying that her son calls her from that number every single night. My grandma was appalled but the mother did not seem surprised to hear that her son had been breaking in and using their phone. So long story short, a man was breaking in every night and using the phone next to my 10-year old dad while he was asleep.
Trying to avoid that long distance bill on his own phone and taking the gamble that the kid is the heaviest sleeper in the house. It's only semi laughable bc no one actually got hurt.
Hey, also from Minnesota! I almost got abducted walking out of my workplace at 16, and my workplace was connected to an ice area. Some nice hockey dads saw me running away and chased them off. They then escorted me to my car, never parked in the car lot on a night shift ever again.
Dude I put the tags on my kids when we go to public places, airports for sure and some people may think I'm paranoid but I know not everyone truly understands how targeted women and children are. I will do everything I can to not be a victim.
The ones I linked are the newer version than I have currently. The older version I have as a hole in it that a put a chain through so they can have it on their neck under their shirt
I let my 13 yo fly unaccompanied to be able to visit my brother using the airline unaccompanied minor program. I took the day off work cause I knew I was going to be an anxious mess keeping an eye on her find my phone dot on the map.
when i was 12 years old i took a self defense class and it was incredibly eye opening. we watched videos from real people who had survived very scary situations and also learned how best to defend ourselves as well as where to strike your attacker for maximum pain. this was 14 years ago for me and i still use many of the tips i was taught. like always remembering to lock your car. because if you walk away for a second someone could sneak into your backseat and hold a weapon up to you when you get back into the car. we also learned that to get the maximum effect when striking an attacker, go for three areas. kick them in the groin, punch them in the throat/nose, and worst case scenario literally scratch out their eyeballs. they also told us a dog will be a great thing to ward off intruders, but even if you don’t have a dog put up a “beware of dog” sign because most intruders want to avoid disruption and will avoid houses with animals. another fact we learned is that men tend to grab a woman’s hair when attacking her so if at all possible when being attacked try to reposition yourself so that your back never faces your attacker as they can grab your hair and overpower you. we watched a video of a woman telling a story about how a man came into her house in the middle of the night and climbed on top of her to sa her. he put his hand over her mouth and her adrenaline allowed her to bite his finger clean off. scary stuff but i honestly think most young girls should take a class like i did. it really helped me build more awareness of my surroundings as well as help to develop my intuition.
I thank my anxiety for making me have situational awareness, my obsession with true crime, and my intuition from saving me from very sketchy and dangerous
After being granted two 2 yr restraining orders. When the last one ended I was granted a 50yr restraining order. I had no idea they went that high. I had so much documentation as well. I also brought evidence to the police for them to log. You're your best advocate.
Yoooooooo look at the new studio! Look at the painting!! Look at all this professional shit!!! So happy you’re able to have a dedicated spot for the podcast so your room can go back to being your relaxing space.
41:17 "It's weird that a college dorm would be half student housing, half hotel." If you've heard of the Cecil Hotel, this is the same thing that causes a lot of safety issues with that hotel. They don't advertise or mention that a few floors of the building have low-income apartments and it's on skid row which is a very high-crime area. This attracts a lot of addicts, criminals, and homeless people. They also have a separate entrance to the building and 2 or 3 floors that they market as part of a different hotel name, the people that rent those hotel rooms don't even know they are in the same building as the Cecil Hotel. However, the entire building shares elevators and stairs. So you have tourists who don't know any better and don't know the area, in a high crime area, sharing space and elevators with potentially dangerous people. A perfect recipe for disaster.
This isn’t entirely true. There’s a private staircase for the housing. It’s not a secret, and yes, it is also advertised. Anyone staying or visiting the Cecil is well aware of its history.
@@sarvolkskaya a lot of people have said themselves they didnt know they were at the cecil or even people in the neighborhood commented how they were unaware they lived across the cecil. as absurd as it sounds, there have been people saying that.
I was doing some outreach work in a bad part of town. I was on the phone with a woman who was telling me that she hates the winter because she can see the footprints in the snow leading up to her window outside her house. To her that was a completely normal occurrence. Again, this was probably happening all the time but she didn't like the reminder of the footprints.

The "child services" story is HORRIFYING. Holy! I'll make sure to contact a lawyer anytime someone approaches me like that. I knew that if someone calls saying they are law enforcement is bs but irl is insane.
the full lengths are my favs bc i’m in love with this show and how you talk about people. shoutout to your daaaaad he’s my favorite person ever edit because also the dad who was talking about his child’s hair needs to unlearn everything his mother programmed into him. he should not be putting chemicals like that on a baby’s head (i think they said she’s 4 or something?) “perms” are formaldehyde and does not belong right next to a forming brain. i have faith he can learn based on his edits and responses but it is not the moms job to educate him. if he wanted to know, he would google it and watch a youtube video instead of posting to reddit.
I grew up with Great Danes, my mom always said with many breeds an intruder will have a very hard time getting in, but it's not impossible. With Great Danes, they'll get in without even knowing a dog is there, but they definitely won't get out.

I teach Standard first aid and I always tell people about the Emergency SOS trick, other ways of calling 911, medical ID, calling 911 through your apple watch etc. Technology is soo handy and there are so many tricks to them but no one knows about them. When I talk about "Getting help" I find it is one of my longest sections because it always sparks interest and creates a good conversation.
My sister just went away to college this year, and I made sure I have her location and set up her medical ID and showed her the emergency SOS. I’m shocked more people don’t know about that. Apple needs to include a specific paper or inform the customer about that feature when they buy a device. It’s so helpful. I recently learned that it updates your location to the police if you’re being taken somewhere.
@@beckylewis70 YES! You would have to go into settings>Safety & Emergency. In that section you can make a medical ID, emergency contacts, set up/turn on the emergency SOS feature. Once you set your emergency contacts you can also share info with emergency contacts where you have to allow google maps, so if your SOS is activated it will share your location with emergency responders and your em. contacts. You can also turn off alarm sound when the SOS is activated. The newer the model the more options there are such as Crash detection and Earthquake alerts.
Here’s my spooky story that has literally shaken me to my core. When I was about 13 I was over at my childhood friends house. They lived in a beautiful two story home. My friends room was located on the second floor, it also had its own private bathroom which lead to her closet where the door to their attic was. She was their only daughter so her room was very lavish (i.e. chandelier above her bed, hanging mirrors on the wall, etc.), which is why when we were in her closet I was caught off guard by the box of pennies in front of the door. When I asked her why they were there she said it was because the door would just open randomly and that was the only way to keep it shut. Which I thought was odd but didn’t think anything of it. As we continued hanging out, we were talking about Halloween and decorating. She then told me about this creepy vampire statue that said the typical “Ah, Ah, Ah.” They kept it in the attic along with all the other decorations, well I guess one year while setting it up they wanted to know if it still worked so the set it off and sure enough it did the “Ah, Ah, Ah” well as it went off her mom said that it had no batteries. So the question back what the fuck? Why did it just go off with no batteries? Well this story gave me the chills but whatever we go on hanging out and talking about weird spooky shit. Then out of nowhere all the mirrors on her wall start to sway and then the door to her room starts to jiggle. We yell at her brothers to knock it off but we get no answer. Then what sounds like a million pennies falling comes from her bathroom, keep in mind the door to the bathroom is shut. We hear the vampire statue get set off and do the “Ah, Ah, Ah” so naturally we start screaming bloody murder afraid to get out of her bed. Her dad rushed up to the room and asked us what the hell we were screaming for. We told him what happened and he obviously thought we were just being dramatic. Then when her mom came home we told her about what happened. As we told her the story she got a shocked look on her face and began to turn considerably pale. When we asked what the look was for, she told us about how when she was about our age her and her cousins thought it’d be fun to mess with a ouija board. One of her cousin didn’t want to use it and went off to the upstairs floor of her aunts house. Well as they were messing with it they were saying and lame Erin was, and jokingly asked for the spirits to push her down. Well as soon as they asked for Erin came crashing down the stairs breaking her ankle, and I shit you not at the same time as she says her cousin fell down the stairs a fucking picture fell off the wall at the same time. My friend and I still hang out to this day but have a code of silence about what happened that day. It had literally shaken me to my core, and every time I tell this story I still get paranoid that whatever caused that to happen is still watching over us.
@aliahshahabuddin2901 I had to reread that part too. Key word: only DAUGHTER, not only child. I think she mentioned that because alot of people who have sons will go all out with decorations and clothes when they do have a daughter after only having sons
Filing a restraining order is so hard. My gf’s ex bf and new gf came to our apartment with a gun and was fully threatening us. We filed a restraining order but got denied because they needed “more evidence”. It was si fucked up. We also called police to come but they didn’t. They came in the next morning and just said, “we were busy last night”. Like okay? What if we got killed? Like wth.
The comment about the partner casually wanting to murder his ex reminded me of a time my ex said something similar. “I have a plan to kill one of my exes, and if it weren’t illegal I’d do it.” Or something along those lines. The man was unhinged in general, also saying stuff like “There’s nothing wrong with being into animals sexually”. Unfortunately I was so naive snd desperate for love that I ignored every red flag that came my way not just in that relationship but nearly every single one I’ve had.
@Jen Agrippa I’m working on it!! The animal one I was VERY vocal about towards him about how fucked up that is. I will NEVER allow myself to be put into this situation again
@@envymordecai4429 I spent two years single after I separated from my ex husband, because the 14 yr relationship with him was toxic and I kept turning a blind eye to his cheating, I found myself dating someone who was literally drinking 24/7 and if he wasn’t wasted he wasn’t interested… and then shortly after I got into a relationship with someone and dated them for 6 months before getting physical and moved in together after dating for a year. The alcoholic was awful, but he wasn’t anything compared to the man I spent a year with before living under the same roof only to discover I didn’t know him AT ALL, I couldn’t even go pee without him literally sitting on my lap. I couldn’t shower without him in the bathroom, and the one time I did he thought someone else had snuck in there with me. One day, he swore he saw my ex husband in the kids room slapping my a$$ and he said “he can stay overnight for the kids in their room, but he can’t be touching on you like that I won’t stand for it” and just kissed me on the forehead like it was an everyday thing. Needless to say when I did leave him, I got sucked back in, and things turned awful and he ended up in prison with a no contact order stamped on him, and has to register as a sex offender when he is released after 7 yrs inside, and will be on probation for 23 more years.
My ex broke into my house while I wasn't home. I pulled up and my front door was open and he was sitting his car waiting for me. Thankfully I had my dog with me and my cousin. (Dog wouldn't have done much cause he was a pit mix and was so friendly that he actually made friends with a homeless guy who broke into our shed, and we found them sleeping cuddled up together the next morning. But it was still nice to have a large intimatingly huge dog barking at my side)
I remember a guy in college that was stalking me showed up outside a class he shouldn't have known I was in and screamed in my face as I tried to just walk past looking straight ahead.. ended up getting him at least banned from entering my dorm- building. Scary times..
Oh my goodness the hotel room story, I would've NOPED out the moment that door closed. It was hard to tell if OP was just trying to keep calm to avoid the man from getting hostile, but then I heard 'I didn't want to be rude' EFF THAT. By that point honestly having the door closed and being in a enclosed hidden space with a creep would be enough to make me nope out. I've noped out of walking NEAR people that gave me bad vibes. And with COVID I make a point to not walk near anyone while I'm out if I can avoid it. If people think it's weird or rude, it doesn't matter do what makes you safe.
That first story hit home. When I broke up with my ex, I was scared because this was a guy who added people from my college to keep an eye on me. Like he knew everything I was doing and who I was with and where I was. He was in the military and when we were dating, he would always show me and be very adamant about where his weapon was and that he could have them on college campus because he was an MP and he was above campus policy. So when we broke up, I was looking over my shoulder for several months.
My family being obsessed with Law and order: SVU, made my siblings and I always cautious of who we’re with, and where we’re at. That show really captures how you can never really trust anyone
Alejandra should def get a Rottweiler but I would also recommend getting a small dog like a Chihuahua or a terrier as well. Small dogs are super loud and reactive barkers and they have been known to alert owners when somebody is breaking in. But also, big scary dog privilege 😂
My first family dog was a rescue Doberman mix and this dog saved my sister from being mauled by another dog… stopped an intruder from coming into our home… always always could tell good people from bad. No formal training, just one loyal baby. She also was sweet to anyone who was a good person. They’re the best.
RE: The hotel/dorm situation: Many colleges do offer the rooms as a low cost hotel situation for events and conventions and what have you. For example, Portland State, since it is right downtown, does this during the summer months. I know because I have stayed there twice. So it is plausible during the summer months.
I was in a relationship turning abuse. He pushed me once during a card game (in front of other people). He pushed me so hard I fell off of a card. He apologized and I stayed with him because he was kidding and “didn’t mean to push me that hard”. Long story short he did pushed me again a month later, if that. Fast forward to today not with this asshole anymore (almost 4 months free!)

Heyy would definitely recommend a Great Pyrenees as a good protector dog. Super loving and attached to my family but extremely protective of the house and me.
The last one was crazy. What bothered me was that the lady had to be convincing enough so that the OP wouldn’t doubt anything she said, she knew what she was doing, which makes me think she DEFINITELY did this before
I remember one night when I was in my early 20’s I slept over at a friend’s house after a late night out. This was in South Boston. Her room was on the ground floor and it was a very hot summer night so I guess she opened the window at some point and there was no screen in. I was sleeping facing the window and she was on the other side of the bed. I opened my eyes at some point in the middle of the night and staring at me through the open window was a guy, just standing there and staring. I screamed bloody murder and literally leaped over my friend in the bed onto the floor. I guess my scream woke her up and I told her what happened, she never slept with the window open again. This was incredibly dumb to begin with, something much worse could have happened to us, but I’ll never forget this guy’s creepy face just staring at two girls sleeping.
On the story about the losing card guy, if you work in service or in similar positions. One tip that I use for when I'm uncomfortable around strangers, is using another name, put some facts to the name(siblings hometown etc.) just enough to feel credible. Creeps will try to get a background of you to "get closer" just say a lot of bs to protect yourself.
I had the emergency sos off for the longest time because it always goes off and display this loud announcement 💀 now this podcast is helping me realize that I need to take EVERY precaution… even the location thing is so smart like i’ve never thought of it as safety precautions
You can actually go into the settings and turn that alert to silent too! Highly recommend because if you are in danger you don’t want those attacking to know you’ve notified in case they then take your phone and shut it off
Totally recommend a Dobbie for Alejandra, mine is 5 yo now and she's been my protector ever since she was a puppy. I could sleep with my door unlocked and feel super safe. She's had no specific training but has always had this innate urge to guard and protect the members of our family. Also, she senses people with bad intentions even when we go out on walks and never lets anyone sketch get near me.
I second this! My Nan had a dobbie when I was a kid & he was just the most loving boy but equally would protect us kids with his life! Since then I had a french mastiff cross breed who I honestly believe was my nans dobbie reincarnated. He was on legit soul dog, had him for 13 yrs before he passed away & I hand on heart believe he saved me from being raped/kidnapped at night by a man hiding in the dark bushes. I didn’t see him but my boy Coco knew he was there & was going crazy! I always knew he would put my life before his but that day really proved it! I now own an Italian mastiff & although he’s still a goofy puppy I believe he would protect me with his life too. Dogs are the best ❤️
Alejandra! I have a Rottweiler and a Rottweiler/Sheppard mix and it's the best security system I've ever had. I could never not live with a big dog, they are not only smart and loyal but so protective they make me feel so safe, especially when I run in the early morning and it's dark out. Highly highly highly recommend!
I lived in Canada and my student residence functioned as a hotel in the summer. From 15 floors, 12 were used as a hotel and 3 used for the students who stayed in rez for summer.
I love this podcast, definitely one of my favorites! The only thing I would suggest / ask for personally is for trigger warnings/content warnings before each episode that may bring up potentially triggering or distressing topics such as kidnapping, m*rder, or assault.
why do i like Ale so much ughh she is so beautiful in every sense, i loved this episode but i'm living alone and i'm sooooo easily scared. I also love the new background and aesthetic
Hi! I’m a female who has lived alone with no family within 3 hours of me for the past 3 years. I rescued 2 Germans Shepherds (one is Schutzhund) and the scary dog privilege is REAL. I have never felt more safe in my life. They have saved me from scary situations a handful of times. I also have cameras and a Ring but the dogs ward off weirdos. Also any dog sheds. My mom has a rescue Rottweiler and she still sheds lol.
android has a similar thing, it doesn't ring emergency services, but it sends to your elected person(s) your location, it takes a picture with your camera, and sends a 15 second voice recording. its super easy to use because ive sent a few accidental ones thankfully none actually needed. I always turn it on when im going to a concert or something like that on my own
To turn it on you open settings go to advance features scroll to the bottom and you'll see send sos messages click on it and go through the set up which is just give it the permissions and then select the contacts you want. In the sos messages settings you can chose how many times you want to hit the side button and a few other settings.
As someone who use to work at a hotel, I can tell you it is common to be by yourself on that shift. You typically have security outside the doors. You do have to leave occasionally leave to help guest. We are told to keep our phones on us and bring your keys.
Yeah, that’s what I thought too as someone who’s been a guest at many hotels. Late at night when I go to the lobby to buy a snack or something it’s usually just one person downstairs. They were wondering why housekeeping wasn’t available, but most places have housekeeping only there for certain hours, right? I remember once I needed my sheets replaced in the middle of the night because I split chocolate milk on the sheets and they said housekeeping wasn’t available. I said that’s fine, but like could someone please bring me sheets and I’ll put them on the bed myself. Eventually someone did, but it took a long time, likely because it was one person working on their own. I couldn’t sleep in chocolate milk though… so I had to ask. Otherwise I would’ve waited.
There’s a lot to be said for a big dog with a big bark. We have a goldendoodle who looks like a big teddy bear, but he has a big bark that scares everyone. He’s about 80lbs and when he jumps against the door and starts barking when someone walks up, whoever is there always jumps. He’s made delivery guys drop packages and take off. Also, ring cameras are great. We have several on our property and always know what’s going.
Yes! Having cameras is absolutely a MUST!! my husbands cousin broke into our house ( my husbands parents house ) and stole jewelry from his parents room. We know it was him bc he had texted my husband to ask him where he was at and he NEVER does that. And when my husband told him he was at work , he opened the message but never replied. And before that I had literally caught him trying to break in through the small bathroom window. He said he was “ just looking “ for my husband. I’m like yeah that makes sense, trying to come in through the bathroom window instead of knocking on the door, totally normal. But because no one actually saw him take anything and we didn’t have cameras, cops couldn’t do anything. and one of the chains had sentimental value to my father in law. Apparently it was his very first chain that he saved up money to buy himself when he first came to the US from Mexico. :/
10:17 - I agree that it could be a red flag but the boyfriend could be genuinely scared of the ex. I mean, we have no idea why they broke up and--as someone who is probably less assertive than I should be--saying no and flat out rejecting someone can be scary. Especially when their determined and hell-bent on you.
That’s what I was thinking too, so they definitely need to have a serious sit down conversation as a couple and talk about it. They need to explain how that makes them uncomfortable and ask why they react that way, ask if they feel unsafe by that person, or if they’re just scared of confrontation, etc. They also need to agree with a way on how to handle it.
I have a pitbull and a basset hound. I figured i needed a guard dog since bassets are known to be friendly and lazy. When I asked my neighbor to go check on my house to see if a package was there, the basset was guarding and barking so aggressively that it scared the shit out of my neighbor. My Pitbull ran out the yard to a friend's house until we got home. lol
As a fellow Duluthian (I actually went to Morgan's rival school lol), I usually love all your stories about home because I know exactly what you're talking about, but this episode freaked me out 😂 (even though I'm down in the cities now). Love seeing a good group of Minnesotans get success on here!
I only found you girls recently, I have seen instagram reels of your content before but I’m so happy I found your UA-cam channel. You guys are awesome and your perspective is always so insightful!
Best guard dogs that comes to mind : -Kangal Shepherds - Belgian Malinois -Shar-Peïs -Cane Corsos - Boerbulls Make sure they’re legal to own in you country/state and do extended research on those wonderful breeds!
Grew up with shepherds, have had 7 in my life. My mom currently has 3. But I have to say, my standard schnauzer, while not exactly intimidating or scary, is a much better watch dog! This pup alerts to so much that the shepherds miss. And he's not a yappy dog, only alerts to people or animals actually being by the house or loud nearby
oh my god, I have just tried it with my android phone and pressing the power button 5 times actually works! that's amazing. Thank you Morgan for that tip! And thank you for your very entertaining podcasts, I love all of them, but the ones with You and Alejandra are my favourites, I like her mind-set.
I used to work the front desk of a dorm in college. My second year, they turned one side into a hotel. It was cheaper than local hotels and a lot of parents took advantage of it. We never had overnight shifts, the latest we worked was 9:00, and then if anything can up after, people would have to call the RA on duty for help. I never had anything too creepy, but I did have a very angry parent show up angry that he and his wife didn't have a reservation made. I tried my best to help but he was so agitated and mocking me and yelling and telling me I was stupid. I was so scared I started shaking and crying while his wife just watched. I called my boss to come help. Turns out he had a reservation for a completely different place.
I'm really glad Alejandra told her story because it relieves me of doubts about my own stalker story. I've got a little bit of imposter syndrome about a situation that happened in high school that I'm hesitant to label "stalking" because he wasn't physically following me. On top of that, I've had other (ex) friends tell me to get over it and that it wasn't that bad, so sometimes I feel like I was being dramatic about it. That being said, the things he DID do was very similar to what Alejandra describes about her stalker. Maybe I'll do a listener write-in about it one of these days. idk. Anyway, thank you, Alejandra, for being open and telling your story.
Thanks for showing that SOS feature. I don't have an Iphone, I have a Samsung Android but I searched SOS in my settings and there is a similar feature so I turned it on and set it up.
Since I got a dog (even though he's only 30 lbs) I feel so much safer. He does a "perimeter of the house ever night and knows when there's people coming and always gives us exactly 2 barks to alert me.
The one about the partner saying he wanted to kill his ex is eerily similar to a situation with my (now ex). My cousin was his middle school bully (I didn't know) and one day boyfriend and cousin met at a family gathering and boyfriend said he wanted to torture and kill cousin and cousin's partner for being together. It scared the shit out of me. He's doing better now and went to therapy but that was an absolute no for me.
In NYC they do have a hotel/dorm building! So yes they do exist. When I went to nyc the hotel I stayed at also had a floor that was students only and considered their dorm
The university I went to in Ontario would rent out rooms in the summer, but at a minimum they kept the floors designated guests vs students. Each space needed a key to get into, let alone the rooms. We had physical keys and during the school year needed at least 2 to get into our rooms in the dorms, 3 if it was afterhours.
@@cshort1305 I'm not sure I never stayed in campus during the summer. I think in the student housing there still were but not sire scout the rented spaces
I have a Rottweiler mix. I'm very petite, and go solo hiking with him and you wouldn't believe how many people comment about how scary he is. In reality, he's afraid of everything and if I ever got attacked, the last thing I'd see would be his fluffy tail jumping into the bushes lol! But people don't know that! It really does work having a big black dog.
Sad that we know we shouldn’t be out alone at night. I use to love walking my dog at night and listen to podcast, it was relaxing, I don’t anymore ever.
Ten years ago, I traveled the UK and Ireland with my friend, and we stayed in hostels. Some of the hostels were universities that rented out rooms as hostels in the summer. It was a good experience for me, and felt secure. There were even up residents staying there for weekend trips or stag dos 🤷🏻♀️
#1: He was basically entertaining it by not shutting it down. #2: Nah this is why you always verify if people are supposed to be there 😫 My school St. Francis Xavier University turn certain dorms in hotels during the summer so it does happen. #3: Stories like these is the reason why I have security plans for my future house. Rings can get hacked.
We have a husky/rott mix and she is incredibly protective of me. Never was trained to be, just came natural. She even bit my husband who was chasing me up the stairs trying to tickle me (so it was all fun!) but she thought he was trying to hurt me.
That’s so sweet! My dog bit my feet under my blanket once when I was wiggling them, and I said ouch and pulled them out. She instantly started to lick them and sat right next to me to say sorry. It was so sweet 🥰 She was SO protective of me around other dogs, and she always wanted to sit with me when she knew I was sad or hurting 💕
I remember being scared when a woman walked right next me in a VERY narrow sidewalk, because the area was notorious for pickpocketing and robbing, even by women, too many horror stories of women and men even trying to kidnap people or showing guns in daylight. I tried to keep my distance (pre pandemic). The woman started to make a big deal about it, like I was an asshole, and my boyfriend at the time, who was walking with me, was appalled that someone would treat her like that, "she's a human!". Keep in mind, with my boyfriend included and another friend, there were four of us trying to walk on this very narrow sidewalk. My sister said it better when I told her about my bf's reaction: "sounds like someone who has never been afraid to be attacked or robbed, what a privileged existence 🙄".
Yeah. Why would she react like that, too? If I was in her shoes, I would understand. I would be happy to see you do that, because you are not going to rob me!
I'm a receptionist and when guests need a new key we have to confirm their room and identity (first and last name). It's more to avoid giving someone else's room key by error, but in this case it could have prevent this whole ordeal. Plus, shouldn't there be someone with her at all times? I don't know how it works in those residences, that's why I'm asking. I know there's the campus security but I imagine it's quite big so, idk.
Came across your channel thru Facebook and I’m hooked listening to the scary stories especially 👍🏻 Most important piece of advice I’ve received and also heard many times. Don’t post your location. Ever. Until you’re out of the restaurant, mall, house, etccc It just makes it easier for people to get to you. Be careful out there. Don’t share so much on social media 🧡
People, It’s better to rude and ALIVE than polite and deceased. STOP BEING POLITE when things feel wrong!!!!
Yes. This reminds me of Christie Marceau
Always trust your gut guys! Even if you’re wrong, you’ll feel a lot better knowing you trusted and respected yourself 💕
As my besties from My favorite murder say: Fuck politeness
I say this all the time, if a stranger thinks I'm a bitch I'm okay with that because I'd rather be alive.
@@suzy.9877 The only advice I have for you is to practice with your loved ones. Ask them to share a scenario and act accordingly. It really helped me and now I’m not afraid to hurt someone’s feelings when I’m uncomfortable.💖
best advice i’ve ever received for living alone:
if you’re walking/running a lot, or at odd hours; big dog. it’s more intimidating.
if you’re not home often, or a heavy sleeper; small dog. they’re more likely bark a lot and cause a ruckus.
most thief/attackers are very concerned with being inconspicuous and will avoid a scene!
also, a generic “home protected” sticker is a better detergent, putting the logo ones the companies give you for advertisement just tells a burglar how to turn off your specific system and how long they have!
and get to know your neighbors! be involved in the community, so if anyone tries to slip in or out, there is no possible way to write off, “could be a boyfriend/moving in/service,” and they’re more likely to take a better look and get some kind of description on them!
thank you
I have two dachshunds and they pack a bark between them, the one would notify you to anyone walking in the hallway let alone breaking 😂
Makes no sense.’’
They said it’s hands down the biggest deterrent, and criminals hate dogs especially because they sense that they’re up to no good and are rarely fans.
Definitely get a dog if you can, the unconditional love is enough but the protection is the cherry on top.
better yet - get one big dog and one small dog!
@@keeran02 I have a great dane and a small crossbreed and this is so true! The small one barks at EVERYTHING and it makes me mad, but now I'm kinda grateful for it ( my neighbors brobably still not so much 😅) and my poor GD is a soft giant but everyone fears her 🙈😅
After having kids I insisted on getting a security system because of my anxiety on this stuff. It helped a lot.
DONT WATCH THE MOMS AND MILS EPISODE 😬 It’s really good but warning it is definitely disturbing to some people

@@mmwtcasmalltown sadly not everyone follows those instructions.

Ive had a no contact before, they did not give him my address

The piece of wood is awesome advice!
😊😊😊
That would not help if someone is really trying to get you. We're talking about wood and glass, right🤔
@@natureandrandomstufftry it and.
She asked her assailant “why me?” And he said “because you didn’t have a dog”.
same w my lab!! and people Hate black dogs it’s so strange…
I had an 80 pound Neapolitan mastiff x APBT. No one would mess would it her.
Rottweilers are amazing. I support Alejandra getting one. They are so sweet and goofy, but I never felt more safe then when I was walking my rottweiler.
I’ve grown up with Rotties, such great dogs with the proper love, care, and training!!

Yesss. So annoying campus security didn’t want to escalate it because it “didn’t do anything” because he definitely did!
The only blame we could place on the OP is the fact that she didn't confirm a name or room number for the guy. That's the only thing she did wrong.
So long story short, a man was breaking in every night and using the phone next to my 10-year old dad while he was asleep.
oh god
What a useless piece of ... work. I can't believe he would break in and on top of it speak next to a 10-year-old boy
Well. At least he left him alone.
😬 crazyy
Trying to avoid that long distance bill on his own phone and taking the gamble that the kid is the heaviest sleeper in the house. It's only semi laughable bc no one actually got hurt.
Hey, also from Minnesota! I almost got abducted walking out of my workplace at 16, and my workplace was connected to an ice area. Some nice hockey dads saw me running away and chased them off. They then escorted me to my car, never parked in the car lot on a night shift ever again.

when i was 12 years old i took a self defense class and it was incredibly eye opening. we watched videos from real people who had survived very scary situations and also learned how best to defend ourselves as well as where to strike your attacker for maximum pain. this was 14 years ago for me and i still use many of the tips i was taught. like always remembering to lock your car. because if you walk away for a second someone could sneak into your backseat and hold a weapon up to you when you get back into the car. we also learned that to get the maximum effect when striking an attacker, go for three areas. kick them in the groin, punch them in the throat/nose, and worst case scenario literally scratch out their eyeballs. they also told us a dog will be a great thing to ward off intruders, but even if you don’t have a dog put up a “beware of dog” sign because most intruders want to avoid disruption and will avoid houses with animals. another fact we learned is that men tend to grab a woman’s hair when attacking her so if at all possible when being attacked try to reposition yourself so that your back never faces your attacker as they can grab your hair and overpower you. we watched a video of a woman telling a story about how a man came into her house in the middle of the night and climbed on top of her to sa her. he put his hand over her mouth and her adrenaline allowed her to bite his finger clean off. scary stuff but i honestly think most young girls should take a class like i did. it really helped me build more awareness of my surroundings as well as help to develop my intuition.
I thank my anxiety for making me have situational awareness, my obsession with true crime, and my intuition from saving me from very sketchy and dangerous
I came here to say the same! Who’s your fav true crime UA-camr?
After being granted two 2 yr restraining orders. When the last one ended I was granted a 50yr restraining order. I had no idea they went that high. I had so much documentation as well. I also brought evidence to the police for them to log. You're your best advocate.
Yoooooooo look at the new studio! Look at the painting!! Look at all this professional shit!!! So happy you’re able to have a dedicated spot for the podcast so your room can go back to being your relaxing space.
It feels so so nice!! I can't even tell you how nice it is
I want more info about that painting though!!! Love it!
It’s crazy that in stalker cases, the police starts to investigate AFTER something happened.
I LOVE THE PAINTING IN THE BEGINNING OF THE VIDEO
It's from a local artist here in LA. You can find him on instagram under Samir_evol !! He's amazing :)

41:17 "It's weird that a college dorm would be half student housing, half hotel."
If you've heard of the Cecil Hotel, this is the same thing that causes a lot of safety issues with that hotel.
I believe right now they're renovating it to house the homeless in LA and it won't be a hotel anymore.
You clearly watched the Cecil hotel documentary on Netflix and I applaud you for that
I was doing some outreach work in a bad part of town. I was on the phone with a woman who was telling me that she hates the winter because she can see the footprints in the snow leading up to her window outside her house. To her that was a completely normal occurrence. Again, this was probably happening all the time but she didn't like the reminder of the footprints.
Omg thats so scary.. I'd freak out... 😶😶
Oh shit! That's why I'm kinda ocd about my windows being covered with blackout type curtains
Oh heeeeeelllll naaaah😱😰😰😰💀

The "child services" story is HORRIFYING. Holy! I'll make sure to contact a lawyer anytime someone approaches me like that. I knew that if someone calls saying they are law enforcement is bs but irl is insane.
the full lengths are my favs bc i’m in love with this show and how you talk about people. shoutout to your daaaaad he’s my favorite person ever
edit because also the dad who was talking about his child’s hair needs to unlearn everything his mother programmed into him. he should not be putting chemicals like that on a baby’s head (i think they said she’s 4 or something?) “perms” are formaldehyde and does not belong right next to a forming brain. i have faith he can learn based on his edits and responses but it is not the moms job to educate him. if he wanted to know, he would google it and watch a youtube video instead of posting to reddit.
if you're ever in the area just go sit at Starbucks for a day, you might meet him 😂
I grew up with Great Danes, my mom always said with many breeds an intruder will have a very hard time getting in, but it's not impossible. With Great Danes, they'll get in without even knowing a dog is there, but they definitely won't get out.
im 20 but i really do adore ur podcast and who you have with you during these! it makes me feel like we are all in a circle just hanging out, thanks for doing this it’s actually nice and fun to look forward to your podcasts and ur guests

Could you share with Morgan so she can show us on the next podcast?
@@tlapo9671 this!! I’d love a compiled list of safety methods (esp for women
I have an android phone, are there any SOS tricks for us android users?
U said ur friend was their only daughter but later u said she has brothers?
Like wth.
The police are so f*cking useless...
@lrcnnpllgr I hope they didn't bother you and your girlfriend again and that you're safe...🙏🏼
“what is snoop dog gonna do?!” made me laugh out loud
The comment about the partner casually wanting to murder his ex reminded me of a time my ex said something similar. “I have a plan to kill one of my exes, and if it weren’t illegal I’d do it.” Or something along those lines. The man was unhinged in general, also saying stuff like “There’s nothing wrong with being into animals sexually”. Unfortunately I was so naive snd desperate for love that I ignored every red flag that came my way not just in that relationship but nearly every single one I’ve had.
Omg that’s scary. I’m glad you got away🥰
@Jen Agrippa I’m working on it!! The animal one I was VERY vocal about towards him about how fucked up that is. I will NEVER allow myself to be put into this situation again
I’m so glad you’re not in this anymore, and please keep yourself safe! You deserve so much more! 💖
holy fuk - glad you got away from that one! Take care
What a sweet, failed guard dog 😂💕
Ugh I loved my Chihuahua so so much. but you right, big scary dog privilege might take the cake this time!
No. A Neapolitan mastiff. Those dogs can put a rottweiler to shame.
I have a medium sized (30lb) chihuahua mix that sounds like a huge dog but acts like a little one, HIGHLY recommend for safety!
Get a dachshund dude, mine doesn't let a soul walk past without letting me know about it lol
My first family dog was a rescue Doberman mix and this dog saved my sister from being mauled by another dog… stopped an intruder from coming into our home… always always could tell good people from bad. No formal training, just one loyal baby. She also was sweet to anyone who was a good person. They’re the best.
Alejandra looks amazing, i feel like we haven’t seen her in forever!
aww thank you Lyndsy! 🥰

The part when hun said it’s so difficult to get a restraining order . Soooooo true
Heyy would definitely recommend a Great Pyrenees as a good protector dog. Super loving and attached to my family but extremely protective of the house and me.
Love this breed. They’re so so amazing for farm protectors
Great Pyrenees are GORG dogs and I've actually considered them too!!!
I have actually thought of getting one this is my sign!!😂🐶
I believe it’s on the podcast Morbid where the hosts say “fresh air is for dead people”

Thank you for sharing the Emergency SOS information. I just set it up and I’m sharing it with everyone I know ❤️
On the story about the losing card guy, if you work in service or in similar positions. One tip that I use for when I'm uncomfortable around strangers, is using another name, put some facts to the name(siblings hometown etc.) just enough to feel credible. Creeps will try to get a background of you to "get closer" just say a lot of bs to protect yourself.
You girls are GLOWING today and I'm so excited for the topic today- perfect start to the weekend!
Highly highly highly recommend!
ahhh I LOVE hearing this!!! thank you for sharing!

I always turn it on when im going to a concert or something like that on my own
how does it worked
Can you tell us how
My phone can only send a text and my call list up to an hour . ..
My Pitbull ran out the yard to a friend's house until we got home. lol
This is one of my favorite podcasts! You rock, keep up the amazing work Morgan!
As a fellow Duluthian (I actually went to Morgan's rival school lol), I usually love all your stories about home because I know exactly what you're talking about, but this episode freaked me out 😂 (even though I'm down in the cities now). Love seeing a good group of Minnesotans get success on here!

Best guard dogs that comes to mind :
-Kangal Shepherds
- Belgian Malinois

-Cane Corsos
- Boerbulls
Make sure they’re legal to own in you country/state and do extended research on those wonderful breeds!
Yay! So so glad android has a similar feature. Just knowing about it makes me feel safer
They should make merch of something that has “have an honest conversation” on it, I hear it so many time on here and it’s so true and I’d wear it
Since I got a dog (even though he's only 30 lbs) I feel so much safer.
@@HAnnB24 shouldn’t there also be residence assistants (RA’s)? I know this is the case during regular semesters, do they have these in the summer?
@@cshort1305 I'm not sure I never stayed in campus during the summer. I think in the student housing there still were but not sire scout the rented spaces
I remember the "story with a twist" and that creeped me out so much the first time I read it and still does
I have a Rottweiler mix.
Yay! I've been hoping you'd do a let's not meet episode!
Sad that we know we shouldn’t be out alone at night. I use to love walking my dog at night and listen to podcast, it was relaxing, I don’t anymore ever.
Yasss!!! Its not even October but I'm here for this and need more!!
#2: Nah this is why you always verify if people are supposed to be there 😫
My school St.
You need a little dog who barks at everything, and a big dog who's scary lol
I'm a receptionist and when guests need a new key we have to confirm their room and identity (first and last name). It's more to avoid giving someone else's room key by error, but in this case it could have prevent this whole ordeal.
Plus, shouldn't there be someone with her at all times? I don't know how it works in those residences, that's why I'm asking. I know there's the campus security but I imagine it's quite big so, idk.
Came across your channel thru Facebook and I’m hooked listening to the scary stories especially 👍🏻
Most important piece of advice I’ve received and also heard many times. Don’t post your location. Ever. Until you’re out of the restaurant, mall, house, etccc
It just makes it easier for people to get to you. Be careful out there. Don’t share so much on social media 🧡
