7 WORST Logo Cliches To Avoid!! 😵

- What are some of the very worst logo design cliches you should aim to avoid in your workflow? In todays video, we look at 7 worst logo cliches and why you should reconsider these kind of designs. Then you'll know how to make a logo design that hits the mark!
Why are cliches bad in the logo design world? Well a logo design is the face of a business, it is what makes them different from their competition and everyone else in that field. If a logo uses a cliche, then it becomes bland, boring and will not stand out at all. It will be difficult to determine that business from another similar business, simply because the logo is so alike due to the fact a cliche has been used by the designer.
Logo design tips and logo design principles are something I teach a lot on this channel, and you can learn a lot more about logo designing by clicking a video at the end of this one.

People who are angry at this message don't understand what an effective logo design means. This isn't just my opinion, research conducted on Google about logo design clichés and the logo design process will show that. It's echoed everywhere by numerous designers.
Sure, you can make money selling template style logos to shady or low tier clients, that is an actual business model. But if you want to level up your skills, income and career strive to design more efficiently.

the more important answer is, what are tips for designers competing in crowd sourced design ( like 99, design crowd, etc) and how to not fall to client's shitty taste while still making profit
@@rafaeterna1081 Top tip: get out of that rat race to the bottom asap. Those websites devalue the hell out of every creative industry on offer. Even after grinding through enough poorly paying jobs to get a few decent reviews - or working entirely for free by pitching your design to "win" - you will still be up against design sweatshops in third world countries cobbling together crap at $5 a job.
Shop local, target a profitable market through digital marketing, and position yourself as a high-value service.
this helping a lot actually, thank you!
Well i don't agree with all that is said in this video. I think trees, arcs, dots can still be used today without looking cliché or cheap. But as you said, it has to be meaningfull and be appropriate with today's trends (flat, simplified...). That's actualy what's interesting in being graphist, using classic forms and reinvent them to new trends and make it feel new (you showed a perfect example at 1:45).
"I want it that way..." - The Clients
"Tell me why..." - The Designer
"Shape of my heart" - The Client
"I never wanna hear you say, I want it that way" - the client
So true 🤣
i am also guilty for many of these due to client's preferences.
...nothing like a good reflection on how design gradually changed and arched trough a window of stale overlayed letter designs into a new, fresh minimalism. It's almost like that light bulb moment when one connects the dots and realizes that tree people are everywhere...:P
😂 overload
I see what you did there. Lord Vader approves.
[Clapping slowly]
[XQC saying wow and clapping slowly]
Can't appreciate this comment enough
Sometimes, it's hard to overrule the client's desire to go for a cliche.
I have had past experiences where the client came to me and said, "design me a logo like this". No matter what I said, the reply was like "I understand what you are trying to say, but I still like it".
😅
tbh Im finally ready to get into this business, and for me,Id offer advice but but the customer is always right even if they are wrong lol
@@brandonlatchman9847 Yeah. 😅
same, if had so many delayed work because i want to convince the client of a propper construction but they just wont listen, and well, theyre the ones who pay the bills so
I guess at the end of the day, they’re paying you, your integrity was kept as a designer when you tried to inform them it was a bad decision. I would say just screenshot the convos that way when their business doesn’t do well, and they try and say it’s the logo, and try and blame you, you have the screenshots that say otherwise 😀
@@jacobherrera8735 that's actually a good idea, haven't thought about that
Wow it’s so interesting to see a bunch of people who actually know a lot about graphic design and logos, so that makes me wonder; what’s your opinion on the “oversimplification trend”? I’d like to know what a professional thinks about the changed logos and if they will be better or worse for the companies.
The word you're looking for is minimalism
Its not a "trend", its a necessity. Minimalism help logos be adaptable to different sizes, devices and screens. All brands are on screens now, so in many cases, refining a logo with minimalism, helps to make it a high performance logo.
Also, is easier to remember, logos doesnt have to be that flashy, you can make your brand identity "flashy" or "creative", but logos need to be high perfomance and be suitable for the brand.
@@pedroluchsinger but if every logo is simplified then there’s no clear distinction between different logos and the one that will stand out is the one that does something different. Until everyone starts copying that style and make it a new trend. And that’s how the cycle repeats.
One of the things to consider atleast for me is if it can be embroidered onto a shirt. Some companies still use these for their uniforms. If it can't be sewn in, then it's probably too much.
Surprise SURPRISE, too much minimalism gives you generic logo thats means CLICHE. Minimalism reduce the uniqueness of the logo and we consumers of the product barely knows what it means. I’ve seen expert doing this too.
“Apple logo” it’s not always going to work guys.
there is one thing to remember though: you dont always want or need a unique clever pretty logo. lets say, if you're a small local business, a local contract worker or food or cleaning service, or the industry you're in doesnt interact directly with a general layperson customer base but instead to other businesses
in these cases where you're not striving to reach national recognition, it's probably better to have generic designs that people already associate with your trade because familiarity is good, familiarity is trustworthy
Very good point, i agree. It's not always the most satisfying task as a designer, but it should fit the needs and the budget. Nobody will recognise Daves Joinery if its too abstract. I often find myself looking at the vinyl logo work on vans (im from England) and its often the fairly shit and simple ones that are memorable.
@@kaneworthington fairly shit and simple is the guy you wanna have fix ur hardware
For a local business, your name and your prior client's word is your brand
Well said, I just posted the same content. Is it better to have a pretty logo that potential customers overlook because they don’t associate with that type of business? I’d like to see an AB test and I’d bet in this context the shitty logo probably performs better
Having gradients will still mess with your logo in unforeseen ways, even if you are a small business! Trust me lol
If I can roll all of these into one logo will I achieve perfection. Two wrongs don’t make a right, but seven just might.
you must surely be onto something there lol

New Design Challenge: Make The Most Cliche Logo Possible
Ooof, that would be interesting
I actually made a cliche. Satori probably saw it if my entry wasn't late. I was trying to incorporate something from the old logo. lol
I think you already have done it..
Just kidding ☺️. Good idea btw.

Special video request: design portfolio cliches to avoid
I am sick to death of seeing an ocean of "X + Y" logos (invariably combining a letter with an object) mocked-up to look like they were sketched on paper with a bunch of completely arbitrary guides and circles. Perhaps it fools clients into thinking there was some big brain mathematics going into the design but I'm not buying it.
That is quite the common occurrence
Agreed. 😂
I hate this too, see it all over instagram.
Alsooo, oversimplified logo also cliche for me. It’s bunch of random lines and geometry made by grid technique then slap it with random words or something, and I barely grasp of the meaning of the logo.
@Project X You just got an X. It's not being forced into being part of an object too, it's just the letter alone. Like my own picture is just the letter A.
I think there’s still room for gradients when designing a logo. Just as long they are used correctly.
Rarely, but yeah. If you use a gradient though, you also need need provide a flat version to the client. If they want to make something that uses their logo on embroidery or say metal, the gradient file is useless
@@SatoriGraphics yeah, it’s not a problem to give the client a flat version of the logo in the suite though. Doesn’t make the gradient version of any less use to them though, it may be their favourite version (again, if done right).
@@nicoleburns2205 I'd 100% just talk the client out of using a gradient
@@fongdimbulator well I personally don’t believe in talking a client out of their vision because it doesn’t fit my aesthetic, at the end of the day designing is a form of art which is subjective to the viewer. Not everyone will like everything x
@@MosesMatsepane yeah, there’s lots of great gradient logos out there for sure xx
How ironic, people who use a lightbulb to represent "creativity" are, in fact, not being creative
lol I know right, I thought the very same
yes…. and no. there is a lot one can do wrong, but most times this cannot be teached or be broken down into a few rules of dos and don‘ts. i told myself long time ago: ‚free your mind‘ and ever since I play with rules and cliches.
Me: told the client everything mentioned here
The Client: put a bulb there, we need a bulb there, it represents idea.
and can you put leaves around it, and a swoosh, with our initials overlapping
Totally agree with all the points - with one exception. I always confirm the budget before starting. And if a client doesn't want to spend decent designer rates (and yet I need the cash!) then they'll get lacklustre logos with possibly one or two of these cliches. I do my best work when the rates are right!
I only take on projects above a certain amount, otherwise it isn't worth my time these days.
@@SatoriGraphics Unfortunately we can't all afford to be so picky. I need to buy food :(
Thats why you do sell it, just you dont do it
Must be nice to have that luxury
@@SatoriGraphics Well I guess that is the point to which we all want to come. For me being still in the planning phase of my business with extreme bootstrapping, I would take a gig for some food stamps. 🤣🤣
These cliches and over saturated “designers” have created monstrous clients. Even today when I showed a new prospect some recent work I was met with. “You are too basic. Do not contact me again.” How do you stand out from the cliched norm? It’s almost like do tree people holding lightbulbs with whooshing arcs or illustration “logos” or just lose.
Okay, the first one just broke me, cause my first branding project for the design college was literally a tree people and I never thought about what a cliché it was.
It might not have been a cliche back then. It's just in recent times it's been killed by people slinging templates of it for $5
You forgot one: the cliche logo with the x and there are 4 symbols and/or text between each part of the x.
YES!!! They tried to be all Hipster and Metro, but everyone's doing it. How ironic. 😆
And the paper folded letter cliche… oh wait 💀 joking btw
The closing line says it all:
"We do live, we do learn and we move on"
When I was in college my teacher told the class that a logo should fit on a dime surface and still be easy to see and depict. Like Disney. The Mickey Mouse head and ears can be as small as a dime and people would still clearly see it
That's a pretty good way to teach the concept 👍
OMG!! My most recent client specifically asked for an amalgam of People + a Tree for their logo!!! I simplified to a Heart + a Leaf... Hahaha!
Really useful. Logo design is hard.
The company I work at had their logo redesigned and I objected to it and said we should have other designers work on it as well, but now, we have swooshy arc city.
Says nothing about us. Funny thing is, it wasn't templated, it was the best their "designer" could do.
Double ouch lol. Owel.. A company that understands the true value of branding will most often succeed over their rivals.
Any logo can become iconic with enough money behind it. bein a design for almost twenty years i've seen the worst logos have the mostimpact purely because the client put enough resources behind it. in 20 years there will be a video saying why all todays logos are rubbish and why reflections are cool.
So true - times change, tastes change. In 20 years reflections and gradients will reign supreme once again!
For me all minimalistic logos looks generic
@@mmmoo123 They're some of the most unmemorable logos that exist, because they're so empty and non-thought provoking. How will you remember a logo that you didn't even think twice about when you saw it?
@@RAndrewNeal I think that's why people have reacted to the oversimplification trend as sharply as they did recently. They even changed the bloody Mastercard logo which could have stood until the end of time into just two circles. Dunkin' Donuts is now Dunkin'.
@@howareyoumoreofaclownthanme My brand logo will not drown in the trends, but be impactful; both in memory and in meaning. But that's a little ways off; I have no brand or products to put it on as of yet.
Very helpful, thank you for the video!

This video made me LOL. Love it!
I'm glad!
That was really really helpful, Thank you so much! :)
You're very welcome!
I'm a professional logo designer, won lots of contests, and made over 250 freelance projects. People, just STOP saying "Cliche" and "Generic" please!!! The client sometimes asks for a design some may call it generic. It always depends on what the client needs not what's right and what's wrong.
About the windows issue, sometimes windows will make the design better and more appealing and I made lots of designs for houses with windows and without so where is the problem in that? The logo should be simple if the client wants it simple not because it SHOULD be! Swooshes, arc, figures, windows, dots, etc,.. just use any shape in your design if this is what the client want.
There are tiers in every profession.
In soccer/football you have people who play with friends on weekends, to amateur players who have a job on the side, semi pros, and then the leagues up to the final top league. Graphic design is no different. Clients who want and like these types of logo typically have a poor understanding of branding and business, and pay low commission.
Just look around at professional upper tier brands and designers and see what they do. That isn't to say money cannot be made appealing to low tier clients, there is a niche market at all levels.
Hey Satory! I haven't checked your videos in a while.

@@SatoriGraphics ✌️
Many good points in the video. I enjoyed how you explained the reasons behind why a design is considered bad.
Wish you could elaborate more on why reflections are "dated". To me a design being old is not a bad thing. Maybe reflections don't tell anything about the brand and make the logo cluttered?
Anyways keep up the good work!
Love your stuff. Don't stop! We need all the advise we can get. 👏💃

I like that the video is short and straight to the point with no unnecessary rambling to stretch it out. Ive noticed that its a problem in the art community for example.
🤣 thanks for the feedback!
Precise lessons, short but fruitful love it
Why I like this immediately into logos no bs for 5 minutes about random stuff thank you.
I must say I don’t like the tone, feels a gratuitous dunking on fellow designers, assuming they are lazy and incompetent. Considering that some of these cliches are seen in big corporations I assume there are reasons logos look like they do, be it attachment to a legacy image, obstruction from clients, or maybe even result of (focus) testing that proves that “tried and tested” is better than the shiny new thing.
I’m not a graphic designer, but it’d be cool to learn! Awesome video, will keep these tips in mind for future use. Only thing that was bothering me was the excessive use of animations.
Really cool and well presented video, I agree with all of your choices 100%. It would have been interesting to hear a little more information about the trends, why are things like the arc swoosh so popular? (Only recently has Intel got rid of theirs) what works within the good examples, and why do the bad designs read bad? Simply being a popular cheap looking cliché doesn't make it something that should be avoided at all costs, but there are good technical design related reasons for each too. Like you touched on with the dots being indistinguishable at smaller sizes. What I'm saying is I liked those details in the video and I wanted to hear more.
Gradients can be used for good, although I've found it has to flow with the design structure of the overall logo. I've used it on the logo for my main music brand and I frequently use it to signal a phase through something or towards something and then I let the logo design define further what that something is.
Thank you. You're awesome ♥️
Thanks! :D
All the best, my friend!
The motion animation in this video is so smooth and cool :D

THANK YOU 👍🏾 😊
I'm super proud of myself because I'm totally new in this world, I didn't study graphic design (but medicine) and I made a logo avoiding all these cliches, I made it simple, beautiful and easy to remember, and it gives an identity to the company which I wanna create. I agree with you, many of these styles are outdated now, also unfortunately these days there are so many ppl who are not even artists, designers or at least talented and have 0 knowledge about branding, or graphic design principles, who are making logos and they sell them for a very cheap price
I totally agree with these cliches. They Are seen so often unfortunatly 😊
I agree with almost everyone, just not the second one. I think the end comparison is much more opinion based then factual. The left one stood out way more for me and would be way more memorable. The right one that was picked as the "better" one would be something I forget 1 minute later
