Had the same thing happen to a couple A4 b7 2.0 oil pump counter balance shafts. The shaft seizes, the gear shears off but is still held in place by the front lower aluminum cover. The gear doesn't fall out of place, the oil pump still turns, and the engine make enough oil pressure to be driven.
Last time I did it I just dropped the engine down out of the bay enough to clear things and it wasn’t that bad really, hoping it goes like that again hah
The older supercharged mini cooper s had a water pump that was driven off the supercharger and the drive in the supercharger would break and do the same kind of thing. I miss regular simple water pumps that drive off the serp belt lol
Interesting situation! Really hope the newer ones solved the balance shaft seizures…
I believe they aren’t really having issues with that on the newer versions
@ Awesome! Hoping to keep this 18 Q5 running for a long time.
You’ll be good!

Wow pretty wild! I think I’ll be digging into that one tomorrow or Friday, what your saying sounds right curious to see if it’s the same deal
Can’t wait for fix
You have to pull the engine to pull the shaft? Hope it comes out without too much trouble!

And I thought bmw's electric water pump was a bad design...

@ yes i actually worked on those minis before. You had to pull that plastic tab to release the tension if i remember correctly
@ yup, silly design
