My stomach dropped and my heart rate increased when I heard the first moment of this. It’s hard to believe that just hearing his voice,still has all the impact of a roller coaster.
Eddie Vedder is a absolute legend
The video footage is from Pinkpop in 1992. It was the first time I saw them live. I saw them again in 2008 and 2018 at Pinkpop, and will again this year June 18th. Can’t wait 😝

This was so cool! I thought in the first verse that it was just him doing acapella and I thought "Damn! The audience is being super respectful and not making a peep!" LOL I absolutely adore his voice - SO unique! And he sounds like the studio version. Dang!

You spoke about Ed control of voice and singing. He has been a life long surfer even climbing truss for over a decade. Climbing while on stage sometimes a microphone 🎤 is left hanging from truss, sometimes stage diving and crowd surfing. It’s online

Your note about singing just above or below the note is characteristic of the grunge genre and what it was commenting on at the time. Guitarists would tune their instruments above or below the standard tuning, as a way to flip the bird as it were, and to be a bit cheeky. Nice find with the (mostly) isolated vocals.
Great analysis as always! When it comes to breath control you might want to check out 'Harry Mack-Break ya neck freestyle'. He has a degree in jazz drumming and after practicing off the top freestyling for 20 years he's able to fill his internal drumming patterns with words. Not a singer but unbelievable breath control. Love your channel by the way. :)

I really enjoyed this vocal-only deep-dive. I think of some iconic lead vocalists like David Lee Roth of Van Halen, Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones, Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music, or Robert Smith of The Cure; they weren't always concerned with great technique but provided a personality or identity for their respective bands. Their performances, while not faultless, were musically right for the song. As an extreme example of singing for the effect you want, one that you may not have heard, I'll direct you to Jo Stafford and Paul Weston's comedy side project, Jonathan & Darlene Edwards. Well, music as an art in general has not the purpose of producing "nice sounds". There is a difference between art and aesthetics. Art always is the artists representation/transcendence of reality and thus obviously can only be occasionally aesthetic.
The only thing thats annoying me about this, is that the sound is from the album not this actual concert lol. I would have much rather heard the vocals live. Its always a million times better live lol.
