    Great vid, interesting result.
    Got 1600m with para's and stopped at 3000m with yagis and no signal break up whatsoever over same coursei. A lot going to depend where you fly obv but yagis all day long for me.

      I genuinely expected more from the Yagi's based on peoples suggestions, I will give them another go on their own and see how I get on, I know my range on paras is pretty much 3500

    I did 3022 m along a beach and with stock settings. You don't need the assessories when conditions are good. I turned only because the battery was at 57% and the way back was with slight head wind. I think up to 3500m should be possible aswell since I had still good connection.

    • @GAVINHR
      @GAVINHR  3 роки тому +3

      That's a really good result, I only ever fly in near perfect conditions in non urban areas here in the UK and simply I can't get over 1500m without any extenders!

      Do you have the CE or FCC version of the drone? Because if you're American you should have the FCC mode which is not legal in Europe but gives you much more range.

    Great Video my friend just purchased the parabolics. I sent my Mini back because of the range problems and disconnections all the time there tech guys tested and of course they found no fault so I have purchased the Ariel boosters to hopefully correct this problem.I don’t expect the Mini to fly miles after all it’s only a beginner drone but still a effective drone great pictures and videos.
    I had the choice to buy Yaggis and paroblics I opted for the parobolics so we will after to see.

      Thank you for taking the time to write the comment and the compliment! I totally feel your pain, when I did my first ever flight I struggled to get to 800m which simply wasn't good enough, I then started to explore options and came across the parabolic ones then did a couple of long range test videos, - if you fancy a watch you can see them in my playlist. I have to say, I am a massive fan of the parabolics, they have been absolutely amazing for me, I bought the Yagi's because I think they have become the 'fashionable' thing to have and I had so many people wanting me to test them, so I bought a set and got the same result as the parabolics as you can see. I am more than happy with my parabolic ones, I will give the yagis another go in my next video, but in this test by increasing the height I gave the yagis a BETTER chance. we will see, lets just say I think you made a good choice with the ones you bought!

    YAGI 2.4GHz are the winner hands down, as there was no initial signal loss until reaching 3500+ meters whereas the Parabolics crapped out before that distance a couple times. Here's an idea for you, I've watched some UA-cam vids that test BOTH the YAGI and the Parabolics mounted AT THE SAME TIME, however I've yet to find a decent range test using both of these extenders combined at the same time. Something to think about Gavin, keep up the good work.

    Now you gotta try the 5.8 yagi setup. I bought both and the 2.4 by mistake. My signal tends to be on the 5.8 side. I have parabolic myself at 56786 ft away at 350ft high.

The 5.8 would pick the video feed back up when the parobolic lost signal. Still was alot of video lag at the same distance when I swapped to the yagi setup when signal was lost. So too me they work about the same as the parabolic.

  • @bullDJI
    @bullDJI 4 роки тому +1

    Hi, parabolas would be more popular with me. All the signal is reflected forward to the drone. The transmission strength is still the same, but the signal goes forward to the drone. Directional antennas are also a good solution, but I like the Parabola more.
    The role is played by open terrain without interference and also to accurately aim the antennas at the drone over the entire surface. Preferably at a 90 ° angle to the waist of the body.

    • @GAVINHR
      @GAVINHR  4 роки тому +1

      Yes I agree, I have always liked the parabolics myself, in my latest video the yagi's do give me more range but there isnt much in it in my opinion. that is how I use the parabolics currently at that 90 degree angle :)

    • @bullDJI
      @bullDJI 4 роки тому

      @@GAVINHR Thank you very much for your answer. I also have antennas at right angles at my transmitter to send the signal through the full area of the antennas to the drone forward.

      I did not. That will be my next test. The reason I chose to do that is another well known UA-camr did a test recently and left them on auto. So I thought it was the most fair way to judge them on performance alone. I shall do one more by selecting 2.4 and a channel

    Yagi's are very directional, i.e. they work like a rifle shot so if you move the controller left or right of the drone you are likely to lose signal. It would be interesing to know if the parabolic reflecters spread wider, i.e like a shot gun. Would be an interesting test to see :)

    • @GAVINHR
      @GAVINHR  4 роки тому

      You see, my thinking has been the opposite, I figured the reflectors would be even more narrow than the yagis, however, for both flights I was sat on a ledge and able to rest my hands on my knees so I literally didn't move.. I have had a couple of issues where I have moved to itch my face or something then disconnected.

    • @dronezoneessex5551
      @dronezoneessex5551 4 роки тому +1

      @@GAVINHR So it sounds like both give you range in a straight line but no real chance of 'exploring' . I'm coming to the view that the mini is great but within 700m and if you want to explore further you need a a bigger drone. Try getting the mini to 1500M and see if you can still roam around without losing signal. Could be interesting ... Having fun is the main thing :)

    • @GAVINHR

    Great test, but to be fair and maybe a bit more accurate, it should be done in manual mode, and in the same channel. I also noticed on my mini, that the actual channel can make a difference even if the signal is not saturated, therefore I recommend, if/when you test it again, to us channel 6 to get optimal results. Of course that will only work if the channel is clean, otherwise you may get the best results... now there's another range test you can do, channel 1vs 6 vs 12 and just for the fun, vs 149.
    It's a shame that our version (CE version) is not half as powerful as the FCC version. There ought to be a better workaround than using these extenders...
    P.S. the max range I've made so far is 2.5km in a more or less rural environment and am still very happy with it. I used some parabolics (like you, also heard about the yagis - they're on their way... waiting for those to do my personal test).

      @GAVINHR  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much for your comment, I do agree with you that it should be done in manual mode, I will certainly be doing that test next time. As mentioned in a previous reply, the youtuber that champions the yagi's, their last video they kept the transmission in AUTO when testing against another extender therefore I figured to do the same on this first shootout. Everybody says the yagi's are the best and I am more than open, but as you can see yourself, using auto mode on this occasion gave almost identical flights. My next video will be using a manual 2.4ghz channel so look out for that. I am having a lot of fun testing these combinations out! I mean, realistically , 2.5km as you have achieved is plenty and more than enough for most people to use, its just a shame as you say the CE lacks the power of the FCC version!

      @@GAVINHR Yeap.
      The thing about the yagis, is that they are made for one frequency only and, unlike the parabolics, they won't improve the 5.8 frequency (at least, not much but can't say for sure if they may still have some effect). It's been hard to find out an imparcial analysis and yours had almost everything to be the perfect one... but the channel may do a massive difference, so I'm afraid you'll have to "sacrifice" yourself and do another test. ;-)

      Thank you for the comment, Due to the fact I get that connection drop usually in the same place as I explain in my video, I actually felt that it made it a better test! My reason for this is that I usually fly with the parabolic and this was my first flight with the yagi's and since everybody says the yagi's are better I actually wanted to see if the yagi's could get me through that. I do explain that in the video, I have done a quick flight with the yagi's over different terrain and neither gave me better than the other again but I do have a plan for a test once the weather improves to test this once and for all.

    I think a true test would be to raise the drone to 100M immediately, rather than raising it as you go along - Also as they both disconnected from the same place it could be interference from the site below - I have seen mixed results from various UA-cam videos. TBH though the Mavic Mini is not designed to go for miles, its a small drone designed for small spaces and close to your location (Right tool for the right job etc). I have always kept mine within 1000m. If you need to film something further you should move closer to it and the mini is not the greatest when there is a breeze. - Great Video and keep up the good work!

    Great comparison but wondering why not simply switch to the Yagis during the 1st flight at the max range of the parabolics. If the Yagis give more range starting from exactly where the parabolics fizzled out then you know they're a better option. And performing a single test flight should be a bit more accurate vs trying to fly 2 separate identical test flights.
    A while back I tried the parabolics with my CE Mavic Mini and wasn't impressed at all as they seemed waaay too direction dependent. I was having to really focus on keeping the controller pointed directly at the invisible little drone. Gotta admit I've been wanting to try the Yagis but worry they're equally as direction dependent. If simply flying in a straight line, as in a range test, I guess that's OK, but for normal zooming around at a distance I'm not sure the also-directional Yagis would perform better.

    • @GAVINHR
      @GAVINHR  4 роки тому

      If I had of done that then I would not of got much of a test! they only got 60 meters more than the parabolics, plus it wasnt just about the max range it was also good to see how the signal held up at all times as the yagi's could of performed worse! @@GAVINHR "would not of got much of a test" Really? I believe you would have gotten the same results, just much faster and maybe a bit more accurate for the reasons I mentioned. Gotta admit I personally don't need to fly my Mini at max distances (especially over water) but would love to get a consistent reliable signal at more than 200 meters in town, i.e., without lags and latency from neighborhood WIFI interference. It really screws up trying to shoot cinematic sequences. And I'm guessing the Yagi, by design, is even more directional than the parabolic. We (CE flyers) need more output power! Seems like a small battery powered home WIFI type repeater/extender might be the way to go. They're probably illegal for drone use, but then again, flying out of line of sight is definitely illegal in many countries these days.

The issue I had was so many people have hugely hyped up the yagi's I was expecting them to go further, that is why I raised height quicker to save wasting battery on a disconnection /RTH, I will be repeating this test on a manual channel and at a set height, say maybe 70/80 by the time i get to 500m or so and stick there regardless of what happens

      Both of them will massively increase your distance, in further tests I have done.. you can see the yagis do give a better signal and longer range, but the parabolics also do a VERY good job, parabolics will work over 2.4ghz and 5.8ghz but yagis you need to choose specific. I use 2.4ghz yagis myself.

    parabolics take it for me.i got my parabolics for £7 and the yagis cost £20 and it was also an unfair test.its a no to Alex's yagis for me.

    • @GAVINHR
      @GAVINHR  4 роки тому

      Are you referring to my test? In my test I feel I gave the yagis a bit more of an advantage yes, I love my parabolics and as I say so many people was asking for a test so I got the yagis, I did a test today with a manual 2.4ghz channel and got very inconsistent results to the point I will do it again, but the paras kept going. I personally prefer the parabolics for cheaper also I agree.

      @@GAVINHR yes I think it's unfair to allow more height for one over the other.if I did the test the main thing I'd concentrate on is what distance I increase height to give a 'constant' and to make it totally constant I'd go to 100m or maybe max it at 120 before I reach 1000m and see which one gives out first.i know you dont need to use those heights for what you do but more height is better no matter what in my opinion.not trying to be a dick but not one video of a range test I've seen has been equal.

    • @GAVINHR
      @GAVINHR  4 роки тому

      Absolutely not, I take it on board, to explain, as people keep telling me the yagis are amazing and by far the best I genuinely expected them to take me further than the parabolics. So instead of letting it cut out I simply raised height to keep the signal purely to max my battery life. in my opinion it shows the opposite, I think it highlights the strength of the parabolics and I do say that at the end of the video. not sure how much you have watched, I mention that the yagis needed more height to keep the signal. I did a test today at 70m straight up at the beginning to see what happened and I wasn't happy with the consistency so I'll be doing it again. Trust me, my next test will be as fair as anybody could.

    • @stephenlambert9826
      @stephenlambert9826 4 роки тому +1

      @@GAVINHR yes i watched the whole thing,the yagis got you further by a next to nothing but you finished at a greater height which was my point.maybe try a test out to sea with battery mod?(risky I know)but i managed 3200m out to sea with no extenders so maybe that wont work because i had no lag or anything and only came back for fear of not having the battery life to make it home.anyway all I'm really getting at is that's tests need to have a 'constant' to be fair and conclusive

    Yagis scratch the antenna. Repeated use is not good for the remote. Parabolics don’t.
