This is the second range test I watched where the drone was flown past the 50% battery range. That takes guts! Great knowledge for us, but wow! Thank you. I have the range extender in my travel kit for those times I may need it in a more urban area. Nice to know the $7.00 was worth it.
But at least he was flying UPWIND past 50%, which is probably the only thing that saved his drone on the return flight :)

Range extender made the mavic fly almost 9km roundtrip :o But if like me the drone overshoots me while I'm figuring out where it is and then show up behind me I may have some issues as the extender will block transmission behind me lol...

I suggest making a test over a town (if legal) and checking how much the extender improves range there too? maybe 800m -> 1500m

I might grab an extender for my new MM just because it seems to give you a better connection at shorter ranges and probably areas with more interference. Probably not really necessary but also not bad for a simple "mod" that is only $10.

Since it was two-ways communication, this means the drone output signal was stronger than the RC, what a design!

I just found out that although the mavic mini is still marketed everywhere in Australia as ~4km range, however its limited to ~1km over unpopulated/unsignalpoluted areas. Real world people only get about 500m in normal flying areas. I'm honestly really happy with it as my first drone, but its a super bummer finding out now weeks after purchase that I got lied to =[

Might be useful for flying in wifi polluted areas, but otherwise it's of little use unless you're really interested in flying straight out and back and doing nothing else at all on the flight. The battery limit will keep you within range (in a place like that) without an extender. But if you are in a place with a lot of wifi traffic, the signal boost could really help stabilize the signal. That's a video I'd be interested in seeing.

Ok so the parabolic reflectors increase reception range of around 25% which is a nice increase. I'd like to also get some Yagi antennas to increase the 5ghz reception. Your mom is cute. Good video! You're lucky to have that convenient watch tower for the added elevation.

Can fly out.. lose recption.. then put extenders on see if it regains connection and goes further.. then take it off see if it loses again..
You seem to have had some headwind, at least at the beginning. The drove was flying in S mode and should have reached stable 10m/s, but it complained about wind and reaching the power limit with speed dropping as low as 8m/s. Hardly the ideal conditions for estimating the range (flight range, not communication range).
On another channel, someone in Hawaii reached about 5.5 km with stock equipment (flying in P mode at about 8m/s with no wind). The (new) battery dropped to 50% right when communication dropouts began and the drone decided it was the last moment to head back home. Iz actually (semi-crash) landed perhaps 30m from the starting point. The only difference was S vs P mode, no wind and warmer weather, but the negative effect of cold on battery should have been more than compensated for by denser air.
God that location reminds me of the swamp area in Stalker: Clear Sky video game... Btw according to the rumors some guys currently working on the fcc mod for the mini, maybe it will come true some time later.

just got one , and i think the extender would would extend so much that i would loose it , so 750-1000 meters would me my max range on a good day :), but you fly smart against the wind , but you test this little thing to the limit :D

Got my mini today, own the mavic pro and the mini seems toy-like in comparison so will be interesting to see how it performs...
My advice for you is turning off smart resampling in post and using the 180° shutter speed rule
With the extender the transmission is more strait and it doesn’t go to deferent places but if you aren’t strait on it it can be worse and some of the time you weren’t strait
My anxiety kicked in so hard at the end lol smh.... glad you didnt lose your drone

I had an issue with those power warning too. I eventually returned my drone and DJI replaced it. Do you have any idea why you're getting those so frequently? Seemed like light winds, etc...

Inconclusive. Your first flight without the extender was flown at 37-40m elevation. The trip with the extender was at an elevation of 90-140m. While is a small difference, it makes a big difference.

You should a turned 180° to show what happens to signal with out line of sight
That was a bit as a comparison between apples and berries. Your second flight was more than twice as high as your first one. And more altitude means more range.

Only after 3km the difference was more significant. And as you saw the lag was way bigger without the extender even at 2km. Yes that was a mistake. But the test still is valid as it shows that the signal is a lot more stable. As until 3km I was basically at the same altitude.
@@TheSkyHighFilms Also note that as the higher you go, normally the wind speeds are also higher. High wind speed = BAD!!!
Exactly what I was thinking. I'm no expert with these things but I knew the higher in altitude you are the better signal you get
He defends everything by ignoring what you said and just proclaiming that the test worked and that the extenders are great. He never acknowledges the criticism, the valid criticism and questions that people have. Don't buy any of his stuff from his store because you could tell he's the type of dude that when you buy something from him and it goes wrong you'll never get your money back.. by these things at your own risk. It's clear as day the two tests were not the same he deliberately flew at a higher altitude then the first one. He never touched the altitude stake on the first test at 39 m. But on the second test he was all over the place. This is a clear indicator that this drone can fly that distance on its own at a higher altitude without any damn extenders.

Have you had any issues with connection? Has the wind caue you any problems?
@@iamdihan no very rarely it's connection is super strong especially with clear line of site but I've only taken it out around 1300 metres. The wind got me once when my battery was low silly me tried to push it and ended up coming back against the wind but I manage to get it back by dropping my altitude

I am working on something that is going to turn the range on this thing even on a CE model into something next level with only the battery power defining how far you can go. I'm not claiming to be the only one to do this but I'm pretty sure I'm going to be the first explaining it all and demonstrating it in a way that is not confusing and everybody can understand. Keep your eyes out on my channel I shall be posting a video of my modifications and tests tommorow at some point.
