Thank you for uploading and for focusing on Reni. Lovely to see more evidence of their great musicianship showing how Reni holds it altogether, like when Mani strikes the bass Reni hits the cymbals and they're so in sync and he does the same for when Squire' s guitar rings out. It's all so perfect those 3 working together with all those years of practice together they're so tight. Just wish I could see more of them together...maybe for the 30th anniversary of The Stone Roses the album eh? We can hope.
I just watched it back again, I think it's around 5:40 it shows how totally in sync the 3 musicians are (Reni, Mani & Squire). They all stop on time together. Then at around 7:00, Reni hitting the cymbals in time to compliment Mani's bass playing is a joy to behold. Lovely to catch Reni grinning too, presumably at Mani (would've loved to have seen Mani's face in return). The way Reni just casually whacks those cymbals is so cool. His showmanship, I could just watch him drum for hours! And sing! In fact I do! But I'm running out of fresh footage so I need him to drum in public some more!! I also love listening to him singing & harmonising. Shame his vocals seemed turned down low here, but it's a shame Ian wasn't able to sing it how he does on record. I know he CAN sing well. I just don't know what goes wrong sometimes live. Maybe that's why he got the crowd to sing some. Maybe his voice gets tired. It's a shame something could be done to help him stay in tune.
I've read comments online from drummers that say things like Reni isn't 'anything special' or 'he lacks technique'. But if there's a funkier drummer alive that's as cool and makes it looks so totally effortless, then I haven't seen or heard him play. Manchester has produced some fantastic drummers: Stephen Morris, Si Wolstencroft, Gaz Whelan, Gavan Whelan (original James drummer) Mike Joyce, Donald Johnson, but Reni is a total one off, the Roses couldn't and wouldn't have been the same band without him in the lineup. I can't drum to save my life, but I'd willingly pay just to watch Reni play. Saw the Roses from the balcony of the Leeds Poly in 1989 (plus all the big gigs SI, AP, Blackpool and quite a few smaller ones as well back then) being high up on that balcony gave me a great view of the drum riser. I practically just watched him for the entire set. Which was that magical Mani jumped into John's arms after the encore in celebration, probably the best gig I ever saw them play, the atmosphere at Blackpool was better, but they didn't play as well as at Leeds. They nearly took the roof off the place that night. Never seen/heard a band sound so tight and exciting. It was like they were miming to the LP. That and New Order/Mondays in Birmingham in 86 are my two favourite ever gigs. I feel sorry for kids these days, there just doesn't seem to be the same spark around in the UK as there once was. That's without even mentioning the acid house revolution.
Mr. Wapojif Did he use the double kick drum setup before they split the first time around, or did he start using them when they got back together? I know he only used one in the late 80's. Is it something that requires a lot of practice to get used to when you're originally only using a single pedal or what?
Proper drummers know how good he is. He is the best drummer ever full stop. Some bang... ( Bonham Grohl)Some groove (ginger Baker) and some are percussive for the song (Ringo Charlie Watts) Alan Reni wren is all three. And some are just overrated. Moon. Bonham. Grohl. I rest my case.
I bloody love the Stone Roses, however, my friend said to me today, "they were very particular about where they played live" .. Yes.. Well... There was a reason for that... Blimey
I was there. 7 years ago today. Fucking brilliant!
reni is amazing....

He is awesome, my favorite of all time, bangs those skins, the intro to Something's Burning, are you kidding me?

How this guy ever got a job singing is beyond me !

Unlistenable. It's like hearing some of my favourite songs get tortured to death.
