Unless there is another angle not shown here, it looks like his glove never touched the runner, just went right in front of him in a swinging motion. Catchers body made contact, just looks like the glove never did.
When you look at the replay at 2:08 it's not nearly as obvious he was out as the other replays seemed to show. It looks like the catcher might have whiffed in trying to tag the runner's knee.
***** Well, just because he admitted he got the call wrong doesn't mean he got the call wrong. In this case, it appears to some, including me, that the tag missed, so while he may admit he got the call wrong, it appears that he got the call right.
I played baseball growing up and it always bothered me when coaches and drunk dads would say "the throw beat the runner" and therefore the runner should be out. This really proves nothing, unless it is a force out. I've seen it happen many times that the player misses the tag on the runner for many different reasons. It's like saying the pitcher threw a strike because the ball hit the catchers glove.
im not a pirates fan but this game marks the downfall of the pirates that year. they were doing good but after this game they started doing terrible. im not blaming the game for it im just saying it is weird lol
Just looked the game up. According to the umpire he stated "I saw the tag, but he looked like he oled him and I called him safe for that, I looked at the replays and it appeared he might have got him on the shin area. I'm guessing he might have got him, but when I was out there when it happened I didn't see a tag.I just saw the glove sweep up. I didn't see the glove hit his leg." Source: espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=310726115
Justin Latrace No it does look like he missed the tag. It's an opinion that varies from person to person. But I may not be seeing the tag because of the resolution. It's not my comments that are uneducated it's your poor ability to accept that everyone has a different opinion and they won't all match up with yours. So in your own words, "get off your high horse".
Everyone playing and watching could see the throw beat him by 20 ft. Its assumed its an easy call to make. I've watched the play numerous times and I could still only come to one conclusion. It's funny, but the only angle that I couldn't see was where the umpire was positioned. Some might call it a "conspiracy" or some (as I did) a good call.
I did not see the glove touch the knee. It whiffed right by it. From many angles it appears he's out, but suprisingly, this was the right call... Good eye ump!
Time for Major League baseball to start monitoring and FIRING some of these incompetent umpires. There`s too damn many of those fat,overpaid($200,000) per year umpires deciding important baseball games.
I still can't believe they called this safe. Remember that 20 inning game vs the Mets and Marlins a few years back. I can't believe the umpire just wanted the game to end.
Actually, this doesn't qualify as a bad call. The human eye could not make the distinction that he was tagged... Period. He whiffed the swipe and managed to *barely* skid the glove off the pants... Look at other videos with better angles and slow motion... 1/16th of an inch, if that, made contact. Anyone would have called that a whiff.
KC Tabuu Did he say that publicly or are you a mind reader? It was an impossible call to make realistically. You're bias because you get to see it in slow-motion with freeze frame. At full speed there is literally no evidence he tagged him and solid evidence he missed. Case and point, the glove never shows any signs of impact with the leg. The graze was so minor that the glove doesn't move... Any honest person would've called that safe.
And even if he were safe, most people would credit the fielding of the Pirates that beat the runner to home, and would've called him out, especially since the tag was really minor; and hence, they would overlook the tag.
And, an umpire would never say that he wanted to get the game over with in public; in fact, he would get FIRED for that, but almost every umpire wants to get the game over with and collect their paycheck. I'll admit it, I feel the same way most of the time, especially since the league I umpire is extremely shitty (I ump 10U and the pitchers literally walk 12 people in a row). Put yourself into his shoes, if you had thick skin and ejecting experience, wouldn't you rather deal with a manager who can't do anything about the game both DURING and AFTER the game (at least during that year; obviously not now since there is instant replay) and go home, or would you rather put your mask on, and squat for a likely 5 more innings, especially with a game that long, and either team couldn't outscore the other for 10 innings?
So, you'd rather a bad call of calling him out and prolonging the game, than the honest mistake call that was made of him being safe? Wtf logic is that? Prolong the game just because for... What was the reason for that? I mean, look at the rules and what happened... The catcher never touched the plate, as if it would've made a difference, and he (for the sake of argument) "missed" the runner... Why would you credit that? You literally just said you'd cheat if it was you and the situation was reversed.
There's two people that know for sure what happened, the runner and the catcher. Judging by both of their reactions after the play, I think it was a bad call by the ump.
This is stupid. News flash HE MISSED THE TAG. Everyone just wants to blame the umpire because "he wanted to go home". Shut up and realize that he missed the tag. Even if "he clipped the pants", there wouldn't be enough evidence to over turn the call. Galaraga's blown perfect game BLOWS this crap away. That should be the "worst call ever"
Good call. Safe. At first it seemed like it was a complete mistake, but after slow motion and a view from the Atlanta bench it was clear that the catcher did not tag the runner with his glove. Blocking the runner on the baseline does not constitute an out. The two announcers were completely biased towards PITT. .
What everyone forgets (or wasn't old enough to remember) is that Pittsburgh was leading the division (tied) and was on pace to have their first winning season in like 20 years. This loss started them off on a 19-43 final 62 game record, including 1-12 (with this game included) after the loss. Who knows what would have happened if the call went the other way and the Pirates ended up winning.
"Unbelievable... the throw beat him by a mile" says the announcer as if that were what matters. Do the announcers even know that a tag/non-tag is what determines out/safe? It continues.... "this play will be replayed over and over" while showing a full minute of the manager arguing the call and NOT showing the reply (eventually showing it). "You'd have to clearly see daylight between the knee and the glove..." as if they can tell from the camera angle whether the umpire saw daylight between the knee and the glove. Do the announcers no realize that the umpire is (a) much closer and (b) has a different angle.
Watch the play at the play up close, is there a tag at the plate. It does look like the catcher wifs on the tag. Can't really see if theres a tag on the left knee because the video isn't HD. But the catcher doesn't tag the right side of the body. Pay attention to the up close video, it should change your mind. Unless, you're a harden Pirates fan. ha
In his head, the ump is saying "I need to take a dump, I don't know if this next fart is going to be it, I have been holding it waaaay too long, I got turtle heads poking out......YOU'RE OUT!".
For everybody saying he was safe, look closely at 1:45 the glove clearly hit the runner, the last angle wasn't very good. Even the runner and the fans knew he was out.
As an ump... to CALL an out, I must have CLEAR EVIDENCE of an out! I use both my EYES and EARS to gather that evidence. Watching this play - the glove BARELY touched the runner, if at all. I can EASILY see how this could be seen as a "no tag." Want the out? MAKE A CONVINCING TAG!
Pro Syler No, he just fell. The third baseman knew the situation. He wasn't about to be distracted into letting the winning run score just because a guy fell down.
@Michael Baxter thank god you 2 clowns aren’t umpires. Probably never played a day in your life. I’ll just take it as you 2 are just kidding. Cause I sure hope you are. 🤦🏻♂️
Based on the runners defeated reaction, and then all the sudden excited. Then touched the plate again. He was out!!!!!!! Leaving my first comment here.😆The catchers arm did swing over the batter, so not enough camera to really tell what’s the right call.
@@ateam388 The fact that the throw was there so early that it SHOULD be an easy play and there might have been other body contact such that the runner might not even know for sure whether he was tagged or not, I'd say the runner surprise is irrelevant.
You would have to a total imbecile, 90% blind, or just plain out of touch with reality if you think that hewasn't tagged. If I was that runner, I would feel guilty abut being called safe on a play like that when youknow without a doubt you were out. I would probably accept it, but still wouldn't feel right about it.
I'm an umpire. Tbh I've made worse calls than this😂 Lemme just say that it's a totally different perspective and it's not as easy as people seem to think. Lol
+Temple Fatjo well youd be a terrible fucking ump my friend because he was tagged. The runner ran into anyways, theres mo avoiding this, he was out by a mile
View behind the umpire clearly shows he is safe and I think (know) I would be a great umpire because the was call correct! It was a Phantom Tag AND the catcher had too much time on his hands, lol AND assumed it was an easy out and got careless thinking that way. Good Call!
Well, regardless of what you think, it wouldn't have been overturned if replay existed back then. He is not automatically out just because the throw beat him by an obvious distance.
I believe the rule is similar to the NFL. If he is ruled safe or out, there would have to be conclusive evidence to overturn the given call. Don't get me wrong, it was an extremely close play.
Tubslawrence25 I dont know, it looked like he missed, everyone is arguing he was tagged at 1:44 but it isnt really that clear to me, he looked safe, it atleast wasnt an easy call
+Johnny Stugots what double negative? Although the grammar is horrid, there is no double negative. But there might as well have been considering his level of speech.
Not sure why this is labeled as worst call ever. It was a good call. Catcher never tagged the runner. Missed the leg on the sweep, his forearm touched his knee but not the ball. Great call.
Still doesn't give 'em an excuse to call this the ball game. This is professional game and must be adhered to the rules, no matter how long this game is.
He was clearly safe.Watch replay about 5 times and the catcher didn't even tag the runner. The catcher just bailed out like he didn't even care lol the catcher's fault.
I seen a first base ump do it to Cleveland once, he called the guy out at first, he beat the throw by two steps, two steps mind you. Manager Mike Hargrove came out of the third base side dugout and never even got to the third base line when the ump mouthed "I Fucked up", Hargrove immediately turned around and went back to the dugout.
the ump yelled something at the catcher when the catcher protested the call and showed him the ball, still in his mitt after tagging the baserunner eight feet short of home plate.. WTF could the ump possibly have said-?
If the tag is close enough that you can’t tell, then he is out. The comment on actually tagging runners stops somewhere in the little leagues ranks. For safety purposes, make the tag look good and get out if there. Anybody who has umpires higher levels of ball knows that. If it walks and acts like a duck without quacking, it is a duck.
Why aren't we focused on the fact the batter face planted 5 feet from home plate lmao
LMAO!!!
😂😂😂
That’ll happen when you’re in the 19th inning
He’s not a batter he’s a pitcher
What are you talking about it’s the batter
Unless there is another angle not shown here, it looks like his glove never touched the runner, just went right in front of him in a swinging motion. Catchers body made contact, just looks like the glove never did.
Agreed
I think it did, but also the batter was very surprised to see he was called safe because he knew he was out
He never tagged him foolish baseball made a video on it
@@culvertowns3069 You can't say he "never tagged" him, it's inconclusive, as Foolish Baseball said in his vid
What do you mean he tagged him right in his right knee
The blown out call by Jim Joyce during Armando Galarraga Perfect Game is the Worst call EVER!!!
That's for sure Erik Malkavian
But that game was against the Indians my favorite team so im happy he called him safe even though he should have been out.
As a Tigers fan it was fuckin horrible, as bad as it was it wasn't the worst ever.
True but I agree he did mess up the call
It's not as bad as this. That call didn't cost them the game. Seems to me the umpire just wanted to go home
I cant be the only one who saw the batter fall hahahaha
I saw that too haha, Sniper!
That was Scott proctor the pitcher
Relief pitcher Scott Proctor was the batter so it's understandable.
He was diving out of the way of that last camera angle haha
Literally dove to the ground haha
This is the greatest Pittsburg Pirate highlight in the past 11 years
Looked safe on replay.
When you look at the replay at 2:08 it's not nearly as obvious he was out as the other replays seemed to show. It looks like the catcher might have whiffed in trying to tag the runner's knee.
watch the runners reaction after the play he knew he was out
Yep. The catcher should have done a MUCH better job at putting the tag down. Don't swipe at the runner, put your fucking glove right on him,
Look at 2:15. He never tagged him. He clearly swiped at him. The catcher has to do a better job on this play.
Looked like the swipe tag missed to me.
Same here, it actually looked like he did miss the tag
no clear cut tag at all. i said it when it happened
1:44
He looks out to me, but hey, it's not my call it's the umpires call.
While I agree that he looks safe, Jerry Meals admitted later on that he was wrong.
***** Well, just because he admitted he got the call wrong doesn't mean he got the call wrong. In this case, it appears to some, including me, that the tag missed, so while he may admit he got the call wrong, it appears that he got the call right.
1:38 - best baserunning (from home to 1st) ever :D
Lol
Adam130694 Really though... ahahahahaha I didn't even realize he fell down untill the end of it!! He was out by a long shot...
Adam130694 lol he triped
Lol
19th inning hardly surprising.

why tf did he fall running to first? am I the only one who noticed that? lmao
That was funny
Looked like dee Gordon

+Minnesota Vikings that would have been pointless since there was only 1 out: the play was at home since it was the winning run
I also did
Safe. He missed that tag initially. Look at the replay.
You're right, but most people are having a difficult time being objective.

But the runner was on him so I mean

Look at the runner he knows he was out. He was just as stunned as everyone else in the ballpark when he was called safe!!
The batter tripping 5 steps to first base is absolutely hilarious.
You can tell by the reaction of the runner that he knew he was tagged.
Kyle McClure he was never tagged he missed it
CulverTowns then why did the runner stand there like he was out. If he never felt the tag he would of reacted immediately
Drone Cinematic there was contact, but the mit never made contact. The batter probably just assumed that something touched him
yes. the runners totally knew he was out.
He missed the tag, one of the best calls ever. Even with a replay, that isn't being reversed.
although the reactions from the batter and catcher suggest otherwise... we’ll never know unless we ask them
indeed. even if there was replay, it was the right call
"Bae come over"
"I cant its bottom of the 19th and they need me to ump"
"My parents aren't home"
*Makes the call
The tag looks like it was missed to me
Although the tag missed this is a funny comment
anyone else see how the man running to first randomly dives head first
I think he tripped 😂
Cjkell33 it's not to distract him. It's either to make him throw to first or he just tripped!
it looks like he stumbled over the bat
Im sorry but watch the glove it never contacted him, he was safe
RebelRider Yup
I can see the argument made by the umpire.. it looks like he just swift the glove near the thigh
Look at 2:15. Clearly missed the tag. I agree 100%
He swift the dude I see the umpires view. Good call ump! Good call!
It certainly looks like he missed the tag to me. Should have been an easy out.

What's funny is this was the correct call. Nowhere does the catcher tag the runner.
I actually think he may have missed him on the swipe
He was safe this might be the best call ever

@Michael Baxter thank god you 2 clowns aren’t umpires. Probably never played a day in your life. I’ll just take it as you 2 are just kidding. Cause I sure hope you are. 🤦🏻♂️
Based on the runners defeated reaction, and then all the sudden excited. Then touched the plate again. He was out!!!!!!! Leaving my first comment here.😆The catchers arm did swing over the batter, so not enough camera to really tell what’s the right call.
@@TruthRISING2024 here's an analysis, call could go either way ua-cam.com/video/YABX_zW-6Kc/v-deo.html
@@ateam388 The fact that the throw was there so early that it SHOULD be an easy play and there might have been other body contact such that the runner might not even know for sure whether he was tagged or not, I'd say the runner surprise is irrelevant.
Lol..the ump said "listen guys I wanna go home already".
Still upset at this... Atlanta fans are so excited, to steal a win. This isn't a legit win.
i just watched this its clear that he didnt tag him
Are you people blind?
+TheMW2informer
Some people just like to argue the minority because it makes them feel special/different/smart even though it makes them look stupid.
you can tell he was out by the runner reaction after the play
You would have to a total imbecile, 90% blind, or just plain out of touch with reality if you think that hewasn't tagged. If I was that runner, I would feel guilty abut being called safe on a play like that when youknow without a doubt you were out. I would probably accept it, but still wouldn't feel right about it.
Craig Abbott the runner knew he got tagged look at his late reaction to the call
wasnt tagged. I saw all three reply positions and his glove never hit the knee or body.
I agree. Never actuall tagged him with the ball.
+Leif Espe The catcher got his shoulder at 1:45
+busterthe2 ik
Ok whatever he was obviously tagged
+Luke Gentry It could go either way but the umpire was right there and had a better view than we do.
lol the guy that hit the ball fell on hos way to first base. anyone else see that?
I remember this game mostly because that little girl they showed screamed her head off the entire game
19th inning, the ump just wanted to go home already lol
I'm an umpire. Tbh I've made worse calls than this😂 Lemme just say that it's a totally different perspective and it's not as easy as people seem to think. Lol
You and me both
+Temple Fatjo well youd be a terrible fucking ump my friend because he was tagged.
Good Call!
Temple Fatjo Out by a mile and a half. I'm sure he was heavily fined (if not fired) for missing such an easy call.
Well, regardless of what you think, it wouldn't have been overturned if replay existed back then. He is not automatically out just because the throw beat him by an obvious distance.
You're right. But instant replay would've shown that he was tagged out.
I believe the rule is similar to the NFL. If he is ruled safe or out, there would have to be conclusive evidence to overturn the given call. Don't get me wrong, it was an extremely close play.
Bad call aside, I will never forget that little girl screaming at the top of her lungs for about 15 innings
Not a bad call
Not a bad call though
"Are you kidding me Jerry Meals"
watch the replay in slow mo he might have missed the tag
is it just me, or does that catcher fucking wiff, and swipe about 2 inches in front of the runner
Just u
Julio Nah I saw it too... Good Call Ump
Julio Steven Ocasio you guys are blind. Ill pay for your eye test. He even admitted his wrongdoings
Tubslawrence25 I dont know, it looked like he missed, everyone is arguing he was tagged at 1:44 but it isnt really that clear to me, he looked safe, it atleast wasnt an easy call
It's just you
he is safe
No he wasn't...
+XxSPARTON13xX yes he was.
+The GamingDawgman TV No. The catcher got the runner's shoulder at 1:45
It does actually looked like it never touched him
+Mason Sousa
No he tagged him. On the leg. Clearly.
+Justin Latrace Not clearly, lol the quality
learn English you just said a double negative so it isn't even clear what you're trying to say
+Johnny Stugots what double negative? Although the grammar is horrid, there is no double negative. But there might as well have been considering his level of speech.
me lol
If I had a dollar for every pixel in this video, I'd have 50 cents.
Remember watching this game Live in Germany. Braves fan, but he was out the min the ball hit the bat. Thank you Umps :D
Not sure why this is labeled as worst call ever. It was a good call. Catcher never tagged the runner. Missed the leg on the sweep, his forearm touched his knee but not the ball. Great call.
He clearly tagged him directly after he made the catch
why didnt he throw to first
because its the 19th inning, and there were less than 2 outs
ahh ok im still quite new to baseball as you can probably tell by my comment lol
its cool
Cause its a walk off if he doesn't, it's ok if your new to baseball though...
There was one out
the umps were tired u know with the 19 innings
Still doesn't give 'em an excuse to call this the ball game. This is professional game and must be adhered to the rules, no matter how long this game is.
I'm not sure if you understand a joke...this guy was being sarcastic. You must be a real downer at parties...
Back in the day when Andrew McCutchen was still white.
Ever? EVER!? I remember a play back in 1906……
He was clearly safe.Watch replay about 5 times and the catcher didn't even tag the runner. The catcher just bailed out like he didn't even care lol the catcher's fault.
he missed the tag lol right over the knee and over the shoulder
He clearly missed
Who's the ump think he is? Angel Hernandez?
He didn't even touch the bag until he stood up
It looked like he completely wiffed on the tag and swiped over his knee but didn't touch him. Definitely not the worst call since it was a close play.
I nominate this for best title of a youtube video
the ump yelled something at the catcher when the catcher protested the call and showed him the ball, still in his mitt after tagging the baserunner eight feet short of home plate.. WTF could the ump possibly have said-?
As a third generation Braves fan, he MISSED that call. I remember watching that game end at work.
I didn't remember the play as much as the young girl in center field yelling ALL night for the P. She was a true fan , ending at about 2:30 A.M. .
@@guyray1504 who could forget her? I hope she got or gets noticed In Pittsburgh and they give her a vip game day experience.
The playoff infield fly rule a hundred feet out of the infield that was called on the Braves ranks up there too. They attract this stuff.
I’m guessing the umpire was just tired of sitting there 7 hours squatting
If the tag is close enough that you can’t tell, then he is out. The comment on actually tagging runners stops somewhere in the little leagues ranks. For safety purposes, make the tag look good and get out if there. Anybody who has umpires higher levels of ball knows that. If it walks and acts like a duck without quacking, it is a duck.
Even the runner acted like he was out. That speaks for itself and that’s why we call it the SHOW.
Guys after 19 innings of baseball, I think he just wanted to go home.
"This will be replayed a million times." Why yes... yes it will.
I hear he still hasn't touched home plate till this day...
