*Bought a 500 for an ultralight rod. It's very smooth **enjoyable.fishing** recommend casts great. One odd thing- the bale wire is a bit heavy diameter in my opinion for a reel of this size. But a great purchase.*

I discovered with the TLC3000 that the reel weight is a little heavy, but pairing it with the right rod makes the kit feel extraordinary. And the durability and drag are amazing. This hypermag sounds like a great addition.

You are spot on about wear and tear on spinning reels during transport. That's the reel killer, not fishing them for hours on end. A rod sock and a properly fitting neoprene reel cover are cheap insurance. I throw 3 different models of Lews spinners. The drag system on these reels is wonderful. They all keep the initial setting, even after an hours worth of casts on a slow day. No need to keep checking your initial setting. The drag kicks in smoothly when it's supposed to every time, and a few clicks either way really does the job. Good video.

Glad to see they made it those colors. Silver black. So many companies make these off color reels and they don’t match up with rods. I know, I know. That’s not a big deal. But i like my stuff to go together. Black n grey, grey, silver, black, matt black. Those colors go with anything. Seems like a solid reel. Those two reels have the same body size? Just spool diameter changes? Thanks for the review Brian!

I love my lews reels. Last year was my first time ever using casting reels. My first one was a favorite (dont recommend) But I pulled the trigger on a lews super duty LFS (179.99). It was well worth the money, loved this thing for jig fishing. I decided to get another and opted for the Lew's BB1 Pro Speed Spool. (199.99). This thing is amazing. For someone like me who still is learning casting gear this reel quickly became my favorite. Even with settings friendly to a casting noob I cast this thing a freaking mile. I get almost as much distance as my curado and yes I even like this lews reel better. If you can fit a mid range lews reel in your budget I highly recommend giving it a go. I did, and I couldnt be happier.

One other overlooked criteria in reels for some of us is ease of maintenance. I like to be able to disassemble, clean, and properly lubricate my reels once per year at least. Some reels are easier than others to service. The higher quality reels from the big manufacturers also have better parts availability for more major repairs. (Lews, Shimano, Swedish made Abus, Daiwa.....)

My first higher end baitcaster was a lews hypermag. Been going for 3 seasons now and still works great. It's super light so I use it as my senko combo, casts light baits extremely well. It's just not as smooth of a retrieve as my Curado, but for the money it's a deal for an all magnesium reel.

Brian, I like my Lews Custom Pro Speed Spin, but I've admittedly not used it much due to its weight. This HyperMag puts Lews in the Ballpark of its competitors, while still slightly heavier, it also comes in at a lower pricepoint than like featured reels from the other guys. I might pick one up, and see how it does, as the price is right and it's obviously serviceable for the average Joe. I will say, I like the knurled spool design(s) over the smooth and/or ribbed offerings by the BIG Two any day, I've not seen any data regarding slippage on any of the spool designs, but I feel as though it has to help in most cases. I think what You're saying here is that we don't necessarily need to spend Three, Four, Five Hundred Dollars or more on Freshwater reels.

Lews was one of my first bait casters I've ever thrown. I am still throwing my starter Carbon Fire baitcasters to this day. I need to upgrade but they have become my best friends. Gonna look into some of these though.

Dam- just bought the Custom Pro speed spool- or is it the pro custom? Idk- I like it so far- very smooth, great drag, 6:1 ratio, all the boxes are checked- durability is all that's left, and I haven't had it long enough to know yet. Got the 300 size this time, usually go with 250s but- wanted something different. Has the same winngrip handle knob as this one, looks very similar really. So far I have no excuse to upgrade- but I'll come up with something. Maybe I'll just tell her that if I don't have this new one, how will I know which one is better?

Have you tried the Lew’s custom pro tlc3000? It’s extremely smooth. I need one more spin combo as my home lake is Lewis Smith and I fish a lot of finesse on Mitchell and Logan Martin. So I’m not sure if I want to get a hypermag or stay with the TLC3000. I throw it on a St Croix 7’1 medium/fast. Thinking about a 7’2 Megabass medium/fast or a 7’3 favorite medium heavy/fast. 🤯
Plus my son will be borrowing for college tournaments at Wallace.

Brian, where the materials and construction do matter. Is if you are. An urban commuter cyclist for example (it was ironic that you were passing through large cities like New York in this piece). I was once a commuter cyclist. In urban areas. For over a decade. And believe me. You do end up knowing (and caring). About the construction of 'high wear' components. I cycled mainly in rainy, cold cities where grit, dirt and pollution. Would reduce my bicycles. To destruction eventually. I had bicycles literally buckle and collapse. Under me. From structural failures. Chains, bottom brackets. Rear axle hubs. At the high end (and you did pay big money for it). Were like fishing reel technology. Engineers told me back then. That road bicycles of ten to fifteen thousand dollar price range (the price range say of a cheap automobile). Were engineered. Better than most automobiles were. Even a thousand dollar price range bicycle. The bottom bracket. If it is any good. Is going to make up. Ten percent of the cost. Of the whole assembly. And will have similar engineering. To your fishing reel. There is a lot of research and development needed. So manufacturers try to recoup that sunken cost. Across a lot of different products (hence why Shimano make bicycle parts and fishing reels). And are good at both.

@@BrianLatimerFishing The sealed bottom bracket. I inserted the first one. As a upgrade to a cheap bicycle. In the mid nineties (it more or less doubled the value of the total bicycle assembly). Which indicated. How bad and cheap. My bike had been. I listened to the last part of this review (and coincidentally, everything you said about reels is the exact same for other mechanical things). That are exposed to elements. Have to work when you need them to. And where lightness of weight. Carries a premium too.
