In the two finals, the one with the gray background looks like the mom to the one with all the paint splotches. I've used heavy body acrylics before and it's ok to use water. The trick is to not try and dilute them down a lot. Like don't try to turn them into water colors. A lot of painters that use heavy body acrylics use water (or another acrylic medium) to thin the paint to start with and they put an overall coat of color onto the canvas. Putting the "base" color on the canvas allows them to keep from having the white show through and can add additional dimension to the painting because you will see the base color show through some. Basically they thin the paint with water so it flows like liquid acrylic to start with and the closer they go to the final parts of the painting they use less and less so it builds up the texture.
I watched a tutorial once on acrylic and they did an ‘under painting’ which gets rid of the white of the canvas, they also used complimentary colors in the under painting to the over painting. It was all very mysterious but interesting 🧐🤷♀️ also it’s really easy to over blend in acrylic, basically be very minimal with blending - end unsolicited advice - 😜💜
And you got the olive green Faber - Castell. Those are like the best pencils you can get here in Germany in my opinion :) Though I usually go with F ones. I tend to start drawing on the wrong side and then smudge everything ^^'' - and that barely ever happens with my Faber - Castells, they somehow manage to make them just soft enough to write or draw and write with without them getting all smudgey 🥰
I have a full set of those Faber-Castells and I love them. Took a little time to figure out how to use them so I could get a clean erase, but damn. They feel great to draw with, and you need very little wrist pressure for it.
@@khills I've been using them ever since school, because you can get them almost everywhere here and you can buy singles in grades ranging from 6H to 8B, certainly in most stationary shops. They're tailored for technical drawing from all that I can tell and not all of Faber-Castell's product lines work so well, the regular lines definitely smudge more than these do ^^ So these were a total life saver when doing tech drawings for my architecture studies :)
@@LunaBianca1805 Yep, my set is 5H to 5B, and it's a GODSEND for mapping out city or insect structure for my watercolors. I picked them up in Prague (I think?), after a particularly bad drawing session with the pencils I had with me, and it really made all the fine and precise linework I like to have set up before painting SO much easier. I haven't played too much with their other lines/products, just because they're harder to get in America, and I've been on a Caran d'Ache and Sennelier buying spree when I've been in Europe.
I agree, I love them too, they sharpen so beautifully and are so smooth. I had to buy two tins to get the full range. I love your nail polish! Also, Bob Ross used a reflective palette, but he sanded it down for studio lights, to prevent glare. You could do the same, if you think you’ll use this more often.
I love watching your process, especially seeing you block colors in and the 'ugly' stage of the painting, then watching it transform into something beautiful, and these turned out beautiful!!! For the heavy body, I have a similar problem when I use it, I've learned to mix way more paint than I think I need, and load the brush up, it's definitely meant to be textured, reminds me a bit of oil paint.
I used to despise painting. That is, until I actually tried it lol. Now it’s my go to. I still draw bit, but I find painting soooo much easier. _No joke, but Rin literally nailed it! I love how she didn't exactly copy the reference instead portrayed her own style. And if I was mixing skin tones, i'd probably pass out (in the first second!)_

I’d say you need white otherwise it’s not natural nor is it possible do do proper pastels.... particularly with acrylic paint. Sigh. Please everyone use white with the true primaries (cyan, yellow and magenta). Fun video thanks.
Two different art teachers both told me the same thing: You only need five colors to paint with, the primaries, black, and white. Every color can be mixed using those, and those are the only colors you can't use other colors to create.
@@kattriella1331 except it’s possible to make black with the primaries. It’s often a great idea (saving time/paint) to have some very dark tones black; or Payne’s grey and sepia. Saves time/effort. If I was picking only 5 acrylic I’d get ; primary magenta, primary cyan, primary yellow, sepia and a larger thing of white. Mix magenta with sepia for reddish black, mix cyan with sepia for bluish black, mix blue and white with sepia for grey. Etc. Payne’s grey is a very dark bluish black tone sepia is a cool toned deep brown. Anyways it also depends on your style. Some styles use pure black others find it ‘deadens’ a piece. @@valasafantastic1055 While it is possible to mix black, if you want a true neutral black, it's best to just buy one. If you want a warm of cool tones black, mixing is an option, but a true neutral black is always good to have on hand.

My comment was assuming you are getting fewer tubes and building up a collection. I like black as well personally!
I agree the box was missing white. However calling cyan, yellow and magenta the 'true primaries' is inaccurate. Red, Yellow, and Blue can work just as well most of the time. Primary colors are a imaginary construct used to make color theory easier. There are many possible subtractive primary colors and there are no real 'true primaries' (I do like MYCK better than RGB though)
I'm so in love with the one "darker", you're so talented!! I'm the only one who always look at the palette where she's mixing colours as an art piece too?
One of the things that I love most about your videos is that I can point to a million points I would have stopped, discouraged with the medium, my skill level, etc. But your instinct (learned or innate) is to keep going. To recognize that it's not finished and to just. keep. going. It, of course, inevitably gets better. It may seem like a simple thing, but I keep thinking about that's not the inclination of a lot of people. Thank you for modeling that. I love your videos and my son does too (he's 7 and wants to be an artist). It's a wonderful reminder.
One good way to help the blaring white of the canvas not to show through is to paint the whole canvas with a base coat. The featured artist probably painted that background grey over the whole canvas then they painted the face. And that helps tie in the background color to the portrait as well.

hi Rin! I do both drawings and paintings and sometimes struggle switching between, so I have some useful tips! I feel like you're probably having problems painting because you treat it the same as drawing (like sketching before and trying to stick to it). You should try not sketch before the painting, and not trying to make your paintings look the same as your drawing style. This is what really works for me, not having expectations and just letting loose. I love your unboxing videos!! I have a playlist of you unboxing stuff and I listen to it as I draw! Sometimes it gives me inspiration to what to draw! Love your videos ❤️
I found Sinix’s video on him learning darker skin tones to be real helpful Essentially you have to focus on the highlights more than the shadows and the colours that can be projected
I love the one with the 3/4 angle!! I think those navy blue strokes by her cheek, chin, and forehead really made it pop. Thank you for making another amazing video, as always. ♥️
Thank you and Amanda SO MUCH for making the captions happen. You are one of the best UA-camrs dedicated to having content that people who are Hard of Hearing or who have sensory processing disorder(s) or both (me) can access and enjoy. 💜💜💜
@@hiffahyphae6707 for skintones you usually have to move past the normal "primaries" nd have to take in account colour temperature as well. a cool blue and cool red will mix a muted purple which can be mixed with yellow to produce a half-decent brown. but sometimes a cool blue and warm red end up mixing a gross grey. what i tend to do is mix yellow (lots) and a little warm (orangey) red to produce orange, with which i mix a teeny tiny bit of warm blue. it usually gives me a satisfactory skin colour. i'm mostly a watercolour artist so i use water to lighten my paints; if you're working with opaque mediums you will have to use white as well. apart from this, you can also go wild and not stick to one "natural" skintone! i often mix greens into my skin colours, or use an orange and violet to make this super poppy brown colour, etc etc. theory only gets you so far. you have to try it out for yourself to actually know how you prefer to work. you can try getting a piece of thick paper or cardboard, and mix all these variations to swatch them! see which mixes you liked more! there's no "one way" to do it. have fun! good luck ♡

Mixing customized colors (especially skin) is always my favorite part of painting. It's always then mixing the shadow colors from those that stresses me out the most, though 🙃
The main thing I have learned from Waffles is that just because something doesn't look great at first, it's good to keep working on it, because you might be able to save it or at least learn something.

There was a moment during the painting that I thought indeed "OMG that's creepy", and for the longest part of the painting all I could think of was how the girl looks like the human version of the cookie monster 😮😮😮
Tips for painting from my college art class! 1st layer is always kinda see through/translucent! Since its easier to build up colours than the opposite, so always start with diluted colours and build up from there! Also helps to see the sketch under for a bit longer so you have a better idea of where to put shadows/details later Love your work rin! Cant wait to see more 😊
I recently got this Scrawlr Box and I got SO lost with what to do with the paint. You were able to use the limited colors available so well to create an adorable masterpiece, so I commend you. 👏
Love the floppy swishyness of the paper that usually happens with Rin. So the fact she did it with the canvas board and said "That's how you know its not paper" made my day.😅
Love how you always start off without confidence and then bam masterpiece! I love your style and love how you talk us through your thought processes! Your vids are always inspiring and the highlight of my week! X
I love watching others work through seeing how things work. These turned out differently and looked lovely in their own ways. I am so clumsy that when I used a glass from a picture frame I cut myself and had to tape all the edges to avoid future bleeding sessions during painting sessions. I think the only canvas painting I've done has a lot more layers that anything else I've done just because I kept over blending the background trying to soften the darker sections edges. It was a paint party, and apparently laughing at your own mistakes is bad. It's the main thing I've done in acrylic, and the feathers for the owl remind me of the color splotches in the video more than feathers. As fun as it was, I learned while I like the look done by others, it is not a technique or look I like in my work. But at least I learned something, even if it was people get mad when you find it amusing the harder you try not to make the same mistake you find yourself doing it more.
I like the second one better, but only just! Probably because you were able to practice and learn with the first and then apply those learnings with the second. Love you, Rin!

Even though waffle said she didn't know what she is doing . That the best part of doing art it doesn't have to be the same as the other artists has done . Even then at times the same drawing same , same artist it dosent even look the same . Best thing is making something from pure imaginary.
A tip on painting that helps a lot! Do your background first on the whole canvas and then put the main focus on top so the site outline doesn’t happen. It makes you a lot less scared to make the main focus messy

Ahhh this is just what I needed! I'm terrible at skin tones. I find watching you learn helps me learn much easier! Thank you!
Seriously. My goal is to have skills like yours.
Skills, as in humor.
Nah, I'm kidding. Your art is literally my dream.
Omg if I could have even a smiget of her humor my art channel would BLOW UP
@@SailorSketches WAIT. I LOVE YOUR ART!!!
I love your unboxing videos!! I have a playlist of you unboxing stuff and I listen to it as I draw! Sometimes it gives me inspiration to what to draw! Love your videos ❤️
I found Sinix’s video on him learning darker skin tones to be real helpful
Essentially you have to focus on the highlights more than the shadows and the colours that can be projected
I love the one with the 3/4 angle!! I think those navy blue strokes by her cheek, chin, and forehead really made it pop. Thank you for making another amazing video, as always. ♥️
The faber castell 9000 sounds like something from the future 😂
Thank you and Amanda SO MUCH for making the captions happen. You are one of the best UA-camrs dedicated to having content that people who are Hard of Hearing or who have sensory processing disorder(s) or both (me) can access and enjoy. 💜💜💜

"mixing skin tones with just three colours?"
me who knows abt colour theory: :D
I’ve seen too much videos abt artists only using primary colors. I feel like I can do it but I know abt nothing of color theory :/
Seeing Her make brown paint and just add more paint to try to get skin tones made me laugh.
@@hiffahyphae6707 for skintones you usually have to move past the normal "primaries" nd have to take in account colour temperature as well. a cool blue and cool red will mix a muted purple which can be mixed with yellow to produce a half-decent brown. but sometimes a cool blue and warm red end up mixing a gross grey.
what i tend to do is mix yellow (lots) and a little warm (orangey) red to produce orange, with which i mix a teeny tiny bit of warm blue. it usually gives me a satisfactory skin colour. i'm mostly a watercolour artist so i use water to lighten my paints; if you're working with opaque mediums you will have to use white as well.
apart from this, you can also go wild and not stick to one "natural" skintone! i often mix greens into my skin colours, or use an orange and violet to make this super poppy brown colour, etc etc.
theory only gets you so far. you have to try it out for yourself to actually know how you prefer to work. you can try getting a piece of thick paper or cardboard, and mix all these variations to swatch them! see which mixes you liked more! there's no "one way" to do it. have fun! good luck ♡

Love you, waffles! 💜💜
the more you work on the paintings, the more and more i LOVE them.
I LOVE all of the girls you painted in this video!! I found your channel just recently and I love your videos :)
Mixing customized colors (especially skin) is always my favorite part of painting. It's always then mixing the shadow colors from those that stresses me out the most, though 🙃
Hiii! I always squeal when you post :)
eee i'm so glad to hear that! 💜
I love the second one and the blotches on the first one are so colorful and fun!😊
And here go with another Saturday morning with Waffles
The main thing I have learned from Waffles is that just because something doesn't look great at first, it's good to keep working on it, because you might be able to save it or at least learn something.
2:32 *Rin is a vampire.*
Rin: - taps at pic of blood-red oozing paint - "Am I the only one who thinks that looks--"
me: a blobby worm gore monster thing
Rin *"- kinda TASTY"*
me: Rin, are you a VAMPIRE? ...Though if you are a vampire, I think I'm okay with that.
(I know it's probably the magenta paint but it looked deep red to me.)
I really like how they both turned out! The first one is gorgeous! I know you say you don’t consider yourself a painter, but your painting videos are some of my favorites!
There was a moment during the painting that I thought indeed "OMG that's creepy", and for the longest part of the painting all I could think of was how the girl looks like the human version of the cookie monster 😮😮😮
This was fun to watch, im looking forward to getting my first Scrawrl box this month!
Lol at 7:09 that’s totally me hehe
Whenever I’m trying to draw someone I unconcisly make their eyes bigger hehe 😜

Tips for painting from my college art class!
1st layer is always kinda see through/translucent! Since its easier to build up colours than the opposite, so always start with diluted colours and build up from there!
Also helps to see the sketch under for a bit longer so you have a better idea of where to put shadows/details later
Love your work rin! Cant wait to see more 😊
Castell 9000, i've always wanted a Castell 9000, i'm kidding, I never heard it
You're the best!!

Barely started the video but im already exited! Also "I've always wanted a Castel 9000!" You can just hear the pure excitement
Rin: "Am I the only one who thinks that this looks kinda tasty?"
Me: "Just ask Moriah Elizabeth" 😏
I was looking for this!
I recently got this Scrawlr Box and I got SO lost with what to do with the paint. You were able to use the limited colors available so well to create an adorable masterpiece, so I commend you. 👏
Rin: Pulls out pallet knives
Pallet -knife- card: I have been forgotten :(
Love the floppy swishyness of the paper that usually happens with Rin. So the fact she did it with the canvas board and said "That's how you know its not paper" made my day.😅

thanks waffles for cheering me up while I suffer from existential dread :>>
Me: feeling i have artblock today
Rin: post video
My art block: chuckles i'm in danger

Even though waffle said she didn't know what she is doing . That the best part of doing art it doesn't have to be the same as the other artists has done . Even then at times the same drawing same , same artist it dosent even look the same . Best thing is making something from pure imaginary.
Oooooooooooooooooooo I saw Kattvalk do this I’m pretty excited, I can’t paint 😅 so instead I shall watch you struggle
haha enjoy my struggle XP
Might sound silly but, this is my favorite kind of pencil... it's so smooth.. really satisfying to use
Rin: this paint looks tasty
Moriah Elizabeth: hehe welcome to the GanG :)
A tip on painting that helps a lot! Do your background first on the whole canvas and then put the main focus on top so the site outline doesn’t happen. It makes you a lot less scared to make the main focus messy
It reminds me of a Twizzler... Maybe that’s why it looks yummy?!
