Hearing Amy Lee (and seeing her in flesh) was such a unique, emotional experience, that my lifetime (12+) of listening to studio versions couldn't provide.
I saw Evanescence live when I was in college and when she started singing that first song... Instant Goosebumps. I was not prepared to be in the presence of that much awesome.
@@greyalice She first came on stage when I saw her in a special way for me personally, too. It was during a tour where a supporting band who performed prior to them (Veridia) performed a song "I'll never be ready". The singer told a backstory about the song how she wrote it for her dying father, and I lost mine too, but long time ago, but still the wave of grief came back at that time. I had tears in my eyes, and then she introduced Amy to the stage. They hugged and then she proceeded to play the piano to accompany the song.
I have been seeing Amy since 2003, even seeing her at Le Zénith while I was in college where their live album Anywhere but Home was recorded which was one of the best experiences of my life. The Synthesis tour was striking too. One of the most underrated aspects of Amy Lee is her killer stage presence. She is always gracious and courteous to bands she tours with (even if she is more popular than the headliner) and often brings opening bands' lead singers back out like Papa Roach to duet with her on songs like Bring Me to Life or sings Freak on a Leash with Korn at the end of the concert which is really neat. She is incredibly dynamic and versatile. Even if Amy is having a hard time vocally like at the end of a long stretch of a tour (she has a huge international fan base and a comparably large American one compared to others on this list and she is HUMAN after all and has hard days like ALL OF US) she always keeps her mic ON unabashedly and she keeps the fist-pumping energy high on songs like Going Under and Tourniquet or starts vulnerable on the piano and then brings in explosive guitars on songs like Call Me When You're Sober or Lithium, but also gets ALL the phones waving in the air while she seranades listeners on songs like My Immortal, Far from Heaven, or if you are lucky to see it live, songs like Hello. No one can go from headbanging to piano playing like Amy can. She can drastically adapt to circumstances and tours like when her gear got destroyed and she played a fully acoustic show in Russia, just her and the piano - I didn't see it in person but it was sublime! Her interpretational skills of songs are AMAZING too like her live cover of Korn's Thoughtless. Evanescence is such an amazing post-genre band that only Evanescence could tour with Muse, WagakkiBand, Seether, Korn, Halestorm, WT, AND Lindsey Stirling seamlessly. Evanescence has the open door (pun intended) for so many people into rock and metal that otherwise never would have listened to those genres. They certainly were for me.
Maria Brink! I had heard 'In this Moment ' live at a bar in Regina Sask. around 8 years ago. This woman could belt out her sound live in a bar size venue and Maria and the band sounded awesome!. 'In This Moment' is so underrated and Maria is surely one of the best women in metal out there. If you have a chance to hear them live, take it!
Same! Although I saw them in London! I sang along to every song and was hoarse by the end of the gig. They were fantabulous. Black Anima is a fantastic album, so I'm glad I saw them on that tour.
Literally each and every one of them were better Live. Either singing wise or passion wise. Simone,Amy and Floor were absolute beasts and every other girl in general gave a real performance, full of voice and passion. The only thing someone can say,is that many Studio version of the songs "Echoed" better to the ear,but that isn't the vocalist, but the studio. For example,Amy gave a real performance but her mic was lower than the band.
Yeah, I went to an evanescence/halestorm concert recently. It was incredible. Amy lees mic was too quiet though. Nothing else was wrong with the concert, we loved every minute of it.
i saw taja before the split with NW and she was amazing but that was when they were doing the "once" tour and she never missed a beat, saw tatiana from jinjer is insane with how she can swap from growl/screamo to her calm smooth normal singing voice and it was awesome to behold to see live, kind of wished i got to see kittie when they were together cause they were phenomenal
I'm just a bit sad, Alyssa is only growling as Arch Enemys singer. Well, that's the style of that band though. BUT: She also has a really gorgeous singing voice! Try 'Kamelot - Liar Liar' for example. If you like switching between growling and singing, Helle from Ignea also does this mid-singing, like in 'Alga'. By the way: Shes from Ukraine, just like Tatiana, coincidence? xD
@@Corro_Dedd newest AE utilizes Alyssa doing clean vocals iirc. I still think I like Angela fronting Arch Enemy over Alyssa, and I haven't listened to much of The Agonist since Alyssa left, but she was great there.
Also worth mentioning, good work in using outdoor stage festival shows for the comparisons, this is the type of performance with the most variables, the least control and "ideal" set-ups for the sound folks, so a comparable performance in such circumstances is indicative of first class talent (singer and sound techs both).
From the title I have expected to see worse when it's live, but even after the very first song, I was like "alright, this is very good" (the studio version) but then when live started the goosebumps instantly kicked in, NOW THAT WAS REALLY AMAZING!!! There's something about the ENERGY when it's live!!!
It’s because her screams are heavily edited to sound the way they do and don’t sound the same as the recordings live. No don’t take this as I’m saying she isn’t a good vocalist and/or can’t scream well, but the list is trying to show people who sound identical to recording despite being live and she doesn’t quite hit the bare there unfortunately. I also think it’s possible they didn’t throw her on here cuz she’s from a Metalcore band or Djent Band and this seemed like an exclusively non-core metal list so nothing that could be considered new school metal made the list also, because outside of Jinjer, Spiritbox would have also been a perfect pic but they are nowhere to be found.
@@Dr3amDisturb3r Yes, she doesn’t actually sound like that. I can say for certain as a scream vocalist myself, she doesn’t actually sound like what you hear. Fun fact for everyone reading this, there is vocal edit settings you can put on a stage mic, it’s not something exclusive to studio recording, you can have vocal presets on mixers that stage mics are plugged into. You can even use auto tune live (Which is actually just one of a multitude of other pitch correcting software).
Loved seeing Lori included in this 💖 Liv Kristine is absolutely amazing too. Clean, perfect vocal technique. Favorite of all time is Tarja, her vocal power is simply unmatched. I love all of them 💖
Some are even better live than studio, a humanized performance is also very aprecciative. Studio tends to be very robotic, mainly now with so heavy computer edition in musical productions.
@@apanapandottir205 right, thats just how studios work these days. And people somehow don't understand that the voice goes through a whole bunch of electronics during live performances aswell. People would probably be weirded out these days if someone ever turned off the reverb on any singer, we are so used to that. Or the EQ, probably even more the EQ.
I believe Kanye West uses auto-tune... Edit: (I believe that live he actually lip-synchs to his own pre-recorded songs - I think there's actually a video of that you UA-cam, though I could be wrong...) 🙃

thats one thing that i love about metal. Metalheads care enough to value actual skill. Most ppl making metal music can actually do the things they need to be doing live. Those who dont get quickly rejected by the crowd. (talking averages ofc) Just make a list like this with other genres and you will find lots of ppl who cant perform without being backed up by tech. ;-)
Don't know about that last part. I've worked several concert venues and heard various performers from various genres. A majority sounded really good that I went back and listened to their albums. Many often outshined the studio version.

All of these female metal singers are so insanely good. I listen to the live albums more then studio. I listen to studio to listen to the other songs that are not performed live
Some of them are out of breathe in some of their live which makes sense because they are performing for hours and sometimes days with non stop shows. Salute to these powerful ladies for keeping the music authentic and epic all throughout the process.
Yeah you can't compare a studio recording to a live performance In studio they can have as many takes as they like on 1 song alone and then still can add some more editing, in live performance they have to sing like 10 songs in succession which is insane and tough
Other bands for a part two I'd add are Nemesea, Xandria, Halestorm, Battle Beast, Elysion, The Pretty Reckless, Beyond the Black, Amberian Dawn, Signea, Leaves' Eyes, Spiritbox, We are the Fallen, Jinjer, Anneke Van Giersbergen, Fireflight, Flyleaf, UnSun, Sirenia, Kamelot, Edge of Paradise, Noctura, MoonSun, MaYaN, EdenBridge, The Murder of My Sweet, Cellar Darling.
When it's easier to tell an entire genre's studio and live vocals apart based on the audio mix rather than the actual singing... Yeah, they're good at what they do.

Simone Simons clip literally sounds better live, much fuller and stronger. But honestly all of them sound great live!
THIS is why I love metal so freaking much!
Such great singing talents!
It's not just the female singers either!
Will find out when In This Moment hit Saskatoon with Slipknot on Thursday! 🤘🤘
@@jsilbern8973 Wow April 14th Slipknot with In This Moment! I am picking up tickets today. Saskatoon is only 2 hours from Regina. Thanks for the tip.
@@andrewcarpenter3991 jinjer was originally coming also, but due to the Ukraine War they dropped off. Wage War is replacing them.
Saw them live in 2019 and it was the best experience of my life
True they were great live I saw em in Seattle
Floor is a GODDESS
Yeah, my favorite among the pack too
Floor can’t be touched ! her and Amy are my favorite two always out of these group of metal /symphonic Rock whatever front women
I need to see Lacuna Coil live again. Such a phenomenal show when I saw them back in 2019 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Same! Although I saw them in London! I sang along to every song and was hoarse by the end of the gig. They were fantabulous. Black Anima is a fantastic album, so I'm glad I saw them on that tour.
@@sapphireseptember the Black Anima tour was when I first saw them, too. Totally agree it's a fire album!! 🔥
Clearly one of the best live shows I have ever witnessed. I was lucky to catch Lacuna Coil and Type O Negative touring together.
……
Lyrically better live?
Ummmm
No one tell him
Yeah, I went to an evanescence/halestorm concert recently. It was incredible. Amy lees mic was too quiet though. Nothing else was wrong with the concert, we loved every minute of it.
Another good example is Suzuka Nakamoto from BABYMETAL. She is a stellar vocalist who always sounds better live than in the studio recordings.
i saw taja before the split with NW and she was amazing but that was when they were doing the "once" tour and she never missed a beat, saw tatiana from jinjer is insane with how she can swap from growl/screamo to her calm smooth normal singing voice and it was awesome to behold to see live, kind of wished i got to see kittie when they were together cause they were phenomenal
Scrolled through video and was like "wheres Jinjer". glad to see im not the only one
@@Dung30n Tatiana could very well be the goat of female fronted metal bands 🤘
@@jsilbern8973 She does? Seems, I need to listen to the new songs, last one I know was "The eagle flies alone".
And thus, this video sent me down a rabbit hole from which I have yet to recover.
Thank you, Alberto.
Tatiana from jinjir needs to be on this she’s a goddess.
Agree. The best female growler not on the list... how can you live with yourself? :D
@@lithiumwhiskey1891 have you heard Jinjer live? Like in a club or on a stadium? hahahah
@@lithiumwhiskey1891 I see man, no hard feelings. You just seemed a little biased in your first comment xD
They all deliver. Even the ones I don't particularly enjoy, I have to acknowledge their talent
Some of my favorite singers ❤ Melissa Bonny and Tatiana Shmayluk deserve credit for their talent too
As do Ulli Perhonen of Snow White Blood and Zora Cock of Blackbriar
I'm still waiting when these two get together for a tour, that would be amazing.
Loved seeing Lori included in this 💖
Liv Kristine is absolutely amazing too. Clean, perfect vocal technique.
Favorite of all time is Tarja, her vocal power is simply unmatched.
I love all of them 💖
Today I learned that Floor Jansen basically combines everything that was good about both Anette Olzon and Tarja Turunen.
You just learned this?

Some are even better live than studio, a humanized performance is also very aprecciative. Studio tends to be very robotic, mainly now with so heavy computer edition in musical productions.
Courtney LaPlante from Spiritbox is my favorite female vocalist. Listen to Mara 1-3, top notch.
this is just further proof that metal artist are not full of auto-tuning and overdub like pop, rap, most new country and even some rock
Maybe not FULL of it, but there is alot of that in metal too.
@@TheAlja But those tools are used to set the vocals in the mix properly (or any other instrument) and not to manipulate the pitch.
@@TheAlja Autotune is one thing, reverb, eq and similar stuff is totally different.
I believe Kanye West uses auto-tune... Edit: (I believe that live he actually lip-synchs to his own pre-recorded songs - I think there's actually a video of that you UA-cam, though I could be wrong...) 🙃
And as usual no Anneke van Giersbergen... That woman deserves far more credit since she's one of the OG goth metal singers when she was with The Gathering. Also live absolutely phenomenal...
Female singers are usually not my cup of tea, but Anneke is the exception, she's awesome!
Marcela Bovio? She is insane as well. Tho I cant seem to remember those Queen's name but ever single singer on "exit eden" project is particularly excellent and mind blowing. Sad thing they (and their bands... Visions of Atlantis and Phantom Elite is such under appreciate bands) dont get the recognition they deserve
I swear the Netherlands is spoiling us rotten with good singers. This American is seething with jealousy.
awesome!......they all deliver, in studio, and on stage
Was amazed at the studio versions, but got chills in the live ones
I've been searching for this video for months, thanks a lot !!
thank God I found a copy that I could reupload here for preservation. The copyright strike forced me to cut Nightwish with Annette Holzen, but whatever.
Cool video. Every one of these ladies sounds even better live!!
Gosh, there should be festival with all these gorgeous female singers, would be supreme.
there is a yearly female fronted metal festival i think in belgium. Or you could watch Ayreon musical projects. He is a talent hoarder.
Where I live there was a goth festival Summer of Darkness where all talent of Europe just came to my town! but they stopped it.
You left out Maria Brink. Saw In this Moment in 2009 and had never heard of them...heard Maria's voice from across the venue and was blown away! Serious lungs on her.
Angel is my second favorite Within Temptation song, she sounds so beautiful live!! Sounds a little more mature as well, I like it.
No escucho metal, este video me apareció en recomendados, pero no me arrepiento de verlo, todas esas cantantes tienen una capacidad vocal increíble, ninguna decepciona.
thats one thing that i love about metal. Metalheads care enough to value actual skill. Most ppl making metal music can actually do the things they need to be doing live. Those who dont get quickly rejected by the crowd. (talking averages ofc)
Just make a list like this with other genres and you will find lots of ppl who cant perform without being backed up by tech. ;-)
Don't know about that last part. I've worked several concert venues and heard various performers from various genres. A majority sounded really good that I went back and listened to their albums. Many often outshined the studio version.
@@Rzo139 surely highly depends on the genre. Didnt mean to say "every other genre than metal" and certainly you will have "good" and "bad" apples in all genres. Metal just seems to have much less of a problem here than many other genres.
I saw Delain and Nightwish (with Floor) in the same night and they were both incredible.
A lot of amazing talent, but mostly newer acts, so I really appreciated seeing a bit of love given to an old school legend from the 80's, Doro Pesch.
As far as I know Doro is still touring, still relevant.
@@Deathbird_Mitch Oh wow, you're right. She has a tour going right now though mostly in Germany
@@arturiuspendragon6849 I do agree with your original sentiment, in spirit, though. WARLOCK 🤘
Female Voices are bringing metal to a higher level. Most of them took my breath just by watching them here on YT. Imaging how this would be in reality.... Thank you for the time and the fact that this brings more attention to the amazing talents which are enrichening music on every level. #FemalePower
I'm so glad to see Delain represented on this list. They are very underappreciated
They're very good
And Charlotte got even better on stage compared to the video used here. You can hear even on the album versions of later songs that she is constantly learning new techniques and improving herself, she is definitely not sitting on her laurels.
@ Yes, Charlotte's voice got insanely powerful by that last album.
She got better every record they put out.
Sooooo, what I'm gathering from this video is ALL of these vocalists are amazing! I already knew about a majority of them; but, thank you for introducing me to some new ones to check out!
These women are so awesome and so incredibly talented .
As I sat watching Amy live for the first time, not knowing what to expect, I found myself expecting at some point to hear a flaw. Not once did she miss a note. I was amazed. Flawless vocal.
Floor jansen is the most impressive in live performance
Female or male heavy metal singers are truly the best vocalists on the planet. How much proof do we need? This is a great video with some of the greatest female singers on the planet. Love you Floor.
The live versions are even better WoW can't wait to see some of them this year 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Who are you planning to see? :)
All of these female metal singers are so insanely good. I listen to the live albums more then studio. I listen to studio to listen to the other songs that are not performed live
I saw epica, delain AND nightwish back in 2016 (2 separate concerts) all phenomenal there too
Sharon's voice is angelic and beautiful.
Some of them are out of breathe in some of their live which makes sense because they are performing for hours and sometimes days with non stop shows. Salute to these powerful ladies for keeping the music authentic and epic all throughout the process.
Better to see them do mistakes than watch some fake autotuned shows. That shows that they're real artists and real people
Yeah you can't compare a studio recording to a live performance
In studio they can have as many takes as they like on 1 song alone and then still can add some more editing, in live performance they have to sing like 10 songs in succession which is insane and tough
As mulheres do Metal Sinfônico dão um espetáculo no palco, PQP é muito talento no palco!!! Perfeitas!❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤👌🏼🤘🏼
Where is Tatiana Shmailyuk (Jinjer) ??????????????????
Amy Lee , Christina Scabbia, and FloorJansen are my favorite
I keep saying this, the best vocalists are always found in metal.
Some of the most talented vocalists on the planet. Excellent stuff.
All these women are amazing! Go women in metal!
Wow Pat Benitar and Grace Slick, Ganis Goplin Joni Mitchell Linda Ronstant Wilson Sisters Anne and Nancy and Christie McVey Stevie Nick's with Joan Jett should be proud of Leading a generation of Women in music that Kickass!! This New Group of Gals Wow Wow Wow!!
"Linda could sing anything" - Dolly Parton - All these women are trailblazers, they deserve metalheads' utmost appreciation. Linda easily could have made a metal album if she had wanted to. No doubt it my mind.
Charlotte Wessels,Elize Ryd and Cristina Scabbia 🥰
They all sounds amazing, especially Sharon den Adel. ❤️❤️
Love every one of these vocalists because they all sound better when preforming live. Everyone of the these ladies earned the right to be called the best.
Gorgeous in sound and looks in all the ways of listening and performance.
Seen Epica and Arch Enemy (with Alissa) live, not disappointed at all, both gorgeous and very talented women. Still a bit sad though that I won't be able to see Tarja and Angela as part of their groups. And regarding Floor Janssen, I absolutely adore that woman! Would love to see her live
Thanks for bringing this video back!
Studio: Insane and incredible
Live: Even more insane and incredible
Perfect. Female metal singers are perfect very powerful voices that's why I'm such a fan.
They are better in live than on the studio records :D
Безумно классная подборка. Все шикарны!)
I don't see any problem. These Ladies nailed it every time.
I got this randomly in my recommended. I haven't listened to metal in years, so I had forgot how awesome these singers are! I should get into metal again.
For these choices, the live is amazingly better, not that either is bad at all.
thank you for this. I almost forgot about Delain. Now I'll listen to them again.
👍🏻
That's just amazing. You see no quality loss in live version. Simply amazing
God damn these women are killing it! Spectacular singing both in power and technique in studio or live, amazing!
i have seen all but one of these ladies live, and they are all equally as amazing.
Elize's clarity and control live is so impressive. All of these women are absolute masters of their art, but Elize's timbre is my favourite.
Thank you for this, i really needed it.
These women are really talented!
Didn't thought i would ever see a video from 2021 with less than 720p that is either way enriching.
I don’t get it. They both sound great. This is definitely NOT “expectation VS reality” content. This is meeting expectations almost perfectly. The exact opposite of expectation VS reality.
i think thats the joke, it was a title to bait people in as if it were a criticism but it's not
" They both sound great. "
You got it perfectly ;)
Yeah I came here to hear some thing shitty, and I actually heard some music I want to check out in the future. Like Epica. I never heard of them before. I like the Nightwish song, but I've actually heard of them before. And I've heard of Lacuna Coil before as well, and of course Evanescence. The others I've never heard before.
This is what expectation vs reality is, there doesn't have to be a dramatic difference.
