Saw Nightwish in LA recently and the band with Floor is truly amazing. In my 70 years it had to be one of the best concerts i'd ever seen and heard. This women along with an incredible singing ability has a remarkable stage presence. I'm still buzzing.
Yeah, the no. 1 was never in doubt. She can growl, shout, sing opera, musical, pop, soft pop, classic and even religious church music. And she holds endless lines with two sets of lungs. And all styles within one minute, if necessary.

Doro ... The mother of all modern female metal singers, at no5. So many of these lists ignore her, but she's aged bloody well and still killing it in her 50s . Floor at No1 is a given.. However, not a single nod to Fabienne Erni from Eluviete or Masha from Arkona. If you want mixed scream/ clean vocalists , Masha is every bit the equal to Alyssa or titanja . Fabi is incredible as well as a pure singer.
I was gonna say, Floor Jansen better be #1 here. The Tarja era was simply divine. Tarja’s TPOTO my favorite version hands down bc of how well her and Marko played off one another there. That was her last show with NW. I can agree with most of this list, but Simone Simons definitely isn’t #7 and Brittany ain’t #10. I mean imho anyways. To each their own. Sharon is amazing, and she shouldn’t be after Alissa. I love AE, but Sharon is much more complex then Alissa. And Angela, yeah she’s a badass!! I think she did good by picking Alissa to replace her in AE. Su-Metal as an honorable mention. Nah! She’s fucking awesome! Otep, meh. Maria Brink is missing too.
Nightwish is my favourite band and and this is one reason why: Tarja number 2, and Floor number 1. The other reason is Tuomas's awesome song writing skills. BTW, I love Tarja and Floor equally.

It's 2022 and I still believe your #1 and #2 choices are intact. Tarja was a #1 choice for many for a long time but Floor is just at another level from all of them She has to be part alien with that otherworldly voice of hers. Hold her out as the best female singer I've heard in my lifetime. Good list.

I've been listening to metal since 2001 (started with System Of A Down), and since then, I've not only not heard any female vocalists do what she can do, but I've only heard maybe 2 male vocalists do it too (Phil Anselmo from Pantera, and Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage). 🤟
I’m not a fan of the type of music that Floor, Simone, Tarja, or Sharon create, but I recognize their incredible talent. Even so, I wish that Lzzy Hale, Maria Brink, Ash Costello, and Candace Kucsulain made the list.
As for Maria, apparently In This Moment is brutal about copyright restrictions so these guys can’t include her in any lists. One of them said that exact thing. It’s stupid and shortsighted by the band.
Slays is criminally underrated. That chick has some SERIOUS pipes. Probably the second most versatile vocalist of the group after Floor. She can hit high notes, hold high notes, sing aggressive power metal, folk music, prog metal, opera... you name it she can do it.
She is a bad ass to be sure. I caught UTA live September of last year when they came through OKC. One of the best live bands I've ever seen. It's probably hard for some people to believe that she can pull those notes off live, but she does and does it incredibly well. She would land in my top five for sure. Right up there with the ladies from Nightwish all three of them, because whether you like or hate Anette you cannot deny the contribution she made to the band. Their two best selling albums have her fronting the band.

All I have to say is that this list is STACKED!!!! True, there should have been more honorable mentions that what was here, but I'm not upset by it. And yes, some should have been in different positions, but for the most part this was great. Thank you for this video, I truly enjoyed it.
I completely agree with Floor. Her Majesty is IMHO the best, most complete singer/ vocalist of any genre and any gender. When you can make even other vocal coaches lose their shit when reviewing/ reacting to your songs, you know you are The One.

Gothic rock is a form of metal, and also the first 2 albums from Evanescence would easily classify as Nu Metal, so technically, yes, they perform metal. Anyways, it is pretty nasty to exclude a singer because you think the band is "more like gothic rock" like if gothic rock wasn't metal at all...
@@alxm1271 Not all goth rock is metal. The Cure is one of the biggest goth bands but they certainly aren't metal. Evanescence only sounds like nu metal in that one song but it is not their typical sound. Most people consider them to be goth-hard rock and not metal.

But you can find goth bands tha play thrash, or even death metal. gothic rock, hard rock, as you mention, or even alternative, should be the genre where you "musically" classify The Cure (although they made pretty different albums, hard to classify, they even have some punk and post-punk stuff). And oh, yes, Evanescence has more than one Nu metal song. Their second album is almost entirely nu Metal, and their 2019(ish) album is some kind of symphonic, so yeah, they are ALSO (not exclusively) a metal band. Thus, no shame in asking Ame lee to be considered in the list. I pretty much agree with the list, but not giving Amy Lee at least a honorable mention... hmm it's kinda weak.
This just makes me think that Opera/Classical and Heavy Metal are about one in the same simply because of how they overlap and compliment each other. Some of these singers are evident of that having clean clear Opera quality voices and perfectly complimenting the distorted gain of Metal. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if they were classically trained.

Just as a person who's been listening to metal since 2001: a lot of the most versatile singers go into metal because it's more complex and they can flex more of their vocal chops singing metal songs. But yeah, I agree with you, there's a lot of overlap.
These are globally exposed band and there are a lot more to be amazed by frontwoman in metal. Floor Jansen is untouchable. Tatiana have a decent skills switching the very distinctive vocal style but while Tatiana is onto deep growl, you should check out Mayu (NEMOPHILA, ex-LiPSTICK as Sindy) too. She too have the ability to switch her vocal style effortlessly like Tatiana and her clean vocal is very powerful. Interestingly, unlike Tatiana who master deep growling vocals, Mayu is very prominent in whistle tone fry screaming which considered as the highest vocal register (whistle register) human voice could achieve and she could do it while maintaining melodic tune throughout. Some described her screaming as mountain lion and the fans sometimes dubbed her as the thunder throat banshee queen.

Take NEMOPHILA for example, its a newly formed band (2019) but the band members have over decades of experience on the scene collectively. Their guitarist SAKI is known as Japanese metal guitar goddess and rifflord but not many know her outside Japan. She also a co-founder (with Kreator bassist) of international-based melodic heavy metal project band AMAHIRU which involved Fear Factory drummer and Epica keyboardist to name a few. NEMOPHILA drummer Murata Tamu known as the most prolific new age drummer, had been on the scene since 2007 (jazz) and also a drummer for INSPION Inc. - corporate audio company providing for games & entertainment company, tv shows etc. SAKI and Tamu have had at least 25 years experience on the scene collectively. Also check out a band called HANABIE 🤘🏻

One you definitely have to watch is their cover of SHIMI by MAXIMUM THE HORMONE (nu metal band from Japan). All MTH band members can sing and this song features 3 different singers - as you guess it, different vocal styles. What's interesting about this cover is that all NEMOPHILA members also can sing, however for this song, Mayu covers all 3 vocals flawlessly. They did another MTH covers of Zetsubo Billy where their drummer Tamu covering Nao (MTH drummer) vocal.
The best thing is...20 years ago there was a very small number to choose from. Just by reading the comments, this could have been a TOP 100 list, and still more who should have made the list. The women of heavy metal have kept the genre alive and well.

Good list with solid choices. It's very difficult to narrow things down to just 10, as there are a whole load more I can think of that are also phenomenal vocalists I'd also give an honourable mention to Clementine Delauney (featured on an album with Serenity, and now is the female vocalist for Visions of Atlantis). Whilst her body of work might not be as extensive, she is a fantastic singer, every bit as good (if not as well known) as many of the names on this list, and is absolutely epic live

This should be a top 20 with Floor at nr 1 and the second on nr 11. That’s how much floor stands out above the the rest and is better than everyone in this list.
Skin from Skunk Anansie should definitely be on this list !! Even though they're considered a Ska Band some of their songs are more metal than some of these other bands.
As much as i like SA and Skin, she doesn't belong on this list. Women like Courtney Love (absolutely hate her) are much more fierce and powerful vocally. Listen to Hole's song Violet. Then there's songs like "Barracuda" by Heart. Or "Send me a Postcard" by Shocking Blue (1968). True early metal that last one!
I would add Sara Jezebel Deva, Amanda Somerville, Charlotte Wessels, Anette Olzon, Kobra Paige, Sabine Edelsbacher, Morgan Lander, Melissa Bonney, Veronica Freeman, and Pamela Moore to at least honorable mention. But Sara Jezebel Deva is in my personal top 10.

Doro ... The mother of all modern female metal singers, at no5. So many of these lists ignore her, but she's aged bloody well and still killing it in her 50s .
Floor at No1 is a given..
However, not a single nod to Fabienne Erni from Eluviete or Masha from Arkona. If you want mixed scream/ clean vocalists , Masha is every bit the equal to Alyssa or titanja . Fabi is incredible as well as a pure singer.
I was gonna say, Floor Jansen better be #1 here. The Tarja era was simply divine. Tarja’s TPOTO my favorite version hands down bc of how well her and Marko played off one another there. That was her last show with NW. I can agree with most of this list, but Simone Simons definitely isn’t #7 and Brittany ain’t #10. I mean imho anyways. To each their own. Sharon is amazing, and she shouldn’t be after Alissa. I love AE, but Sharon is much more complex then Alissa. And Angela, yeah she’s a badass!! I think she did good by picking Alissa to replace her in AE. Su-Metal as an honorable mention. Nah! She’s fucking awesome! Otep, meh. Maria Brink is missing too.

It's 2022 and I still believe your #1 and #2 choices are intact. Tarja was a #1 choice for many for a long time but Floor is just at another level from all of them She has to be part alien with that otherworldly voice of hers. Hold her out as the best female singer I've heard in my lifetime.

I’m not a fan of the type of music that Floor, Simone, Tarja, or Sharon create, but I recognize their incredible talent. Even so, I wish that Lzzy Hale, Maria Brink, Ash Costello, and Candace Kucsulain made the list.
As for Maria, apparently In This Moment is brutal about copyright restrictions so these guys can’t include her in any lists. One of them said that exact thing. It’s stupid and shortsighted by the band.
Slays is criminally underrated. That chick has some SERIOUS pipes. Probably the second most versatile vocalist of the group after Floor. She can hit high notes, hold high notes, sing aggressive power metal, folk music, prog metal, opera... you name it she can do it.
She is impressive! I would put her on the same level as Simone Simons
She is a bad ass to be sure. I caught UTA live September of last year when they came through OKC. One of the best live bands I've ever seen. It's probably hard for some people to believe that she can pull those notes off live, but she does and does it incredibly well. She would land in my top five for sure. Right up there with the ladies from Nightwish all three of them, because whether you like or hate Anette you cannot deny the contribution she made to the band. Their two best selling albums have her fronting the band.

Gothic rock is a form of metal, and also the first 2 albums from Evanescence would easily classify as Nu Metal, so technically, yes, they perform metal. Anyways, it is pretty nasty to exclude a singer because you think the band is "more like gothic rock" like if gothic rock wasn't metal at all...
@@alxm1271 Not all goth rock is metal. The Cure is one of the biggest goth bands but they certainly aren't metal. Evanescence only sounds like nu metal in that one song but it is not their typical sound. Most people consider them to be goth-hard rock and not metal.

But you can find goth bands tha play thrash, or even death metal. gothic rock, hard rock, as you mention, or even alternative, should be the genre where you "musically" classify The Cure (although they made pretty different albums, hard to classify, they even have some punk and post-punk stuff). And oh, yes, Evanescence has more than one Nu metal song. Their second album is almost entirely nu Metal, and their 2019(ish) album is some kind of symphonic, so yeah, they are ALSO (not exclusively) a metal band.
Thus, no shame in asking Ame lee to be considered in the list. I pretty much agree with the list, but not giving Amy Lee at least a honorable mention... hmm it's kinda weak.
This just makes me think that Opera/Classical and Heavy Metal are about one in the same simply because of how they overlap and compliment each other. Some of these singers are evident of that having clean clear Opera quality voices and perfectly complimenting the distorted gain of Metal. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if they were classically trained.

Just as a person who's been listening to metal since 2001: a lot of the most versatile singers go into metal because it's more complex and they can flex more of their vocal chops singing metal songs. But yeah, I agree with you, there's a lot of overlap.

These are globally exposed band and there are a lot more to be amazed by frontwoman in metal. Floor Jansen is untouchable. Tatiana have a decent skills switching the very distinctive vocal style but while Tatiana is onto deep growl, you should check out Mayu (NEMOPHILA, ex-LiPSTICK as Sindy) too. She too have the ability to switch her vocal style effortlessly like Tatiana and her clean vocal is very powerful. Interestingly, unlike Tatiana who master deep growling vocals, Mayu is very prominent in whistle tone fry screaming which considered as the highest vocal register (whistle register) human voice could achieve and she could do it while maintaining melodic tune throughout. Some described her screaming as mountain lion and the fans sometimes dubbed her as the thunder throat banshee queen.

Take NEMOPHILA for example, its a newly formed band (2019) but the band members have over decades of experience on the scene collectively. Their guitarist SAKI is known as Japanese metal guitar goddess and rifflord but not many know her outside Japan. She also a co-founder (with Kreator bassist) of international-based melodic heavy metal project band AMAHIRU which involved Fear Factory drummer and Epica keyboardist to name a few. NEMOPHILA drummer Murata Tamu known as the most prolific new age drummer, had been on the scene since 2007 (jazz) and also a drummer for INSPION Inc. - corporate audio company providing for games & entertainment company, tv shows etc. SAKI and Tamu have had at least 25 years experience on the scene collectively. Also check out a band called HANABIE 🤘🏻

One you definitely have to watch is their cover of SHIMI by MAXIMUM THE HORMONE (nu metal band from Japan). All MTH band members can sing and this song features 3 different singers - as you guess it, different vocal styles. What's interesting about this cover is that all NEMOPHILA members also can sing, however for this song, Mayu covers all 3 vocals flawlessly. They did another MTH covers of Zetsubo Billy where their drummer Tamu covering Nao (MTH drummer) vocal.
The best thing is...20 years ago there was a very small number to choose from. Just by reading the comments, this could have been a TOP 100 list, and still more who should have made the list. The women of heavy metal have kept the genre alive and well.

Good list with solid choices. It's very difficult to narrow things down to just 10, as there are a whole load more I can think of that are also phenomenal vocalists
I'd also give an honourable mention to Clementine Delauney (featured on an album with Serenity, and now is the female vocalist for Visions of Atlantis). Whilst her body of work might not be as extensive, she is a fantastic singer, every bit as good (if not as well known) as many of the names on this list, and is absolutely epic live

It's funny how that Babymetal - Suzuka Nakamoto - *a little Japanese girl* with sweet voice got honorable mentioned along those monsters of singer. xD They're all so impressive, I love Within Temptation, and a big fan of Babymetal for their creativity with music and the energy of their show is just something else

I would have liked to have seen Maria Brink, Jennifer Haben, Charlotte Wessels and Melissa Bonny in the list. Elize Ryd should have been higher in the ranking.
In the description box they said "Also we wanted to include Maria Brink (In The Moment) on our list but almost all their materials were copyrighted." so if it wasn't for that, Maria would have probably been in this.
I was looking for Charlotte Wessels myself. At least an honorable mention though she’s in my top 10.

As i said in my post , someone missed : Liv Kristine( ex- leaves eyes ) , Asami ( lovebites), Marcela Bovio (mayan), Maggie Luyten(ex- nightmare), Charlotte Wessels ( delain) , Maria Brink ( in this moment), amy lee (evanescence) .anneke van Giersbergen (ex- the gathering), lzzy hale ( hallestorm).and some of this singers deserved be on top 10 or even top 5 , but that is my opinion .

Not only can this woman growl, but she's self-taught in that regard. And, her cleans are up there as well. The last thing? Ignea has a very unique sound -- sounding as if they should be from Persia, instead of Kyev, Ukraine.

I came back because there is nothing sexier than hearing lyrics in another language (Chorna Polnya, from their last album).
This should be a top 20 with Floor at nr 1 and the second on nr 11. That’s how much floor stands out above the the rest and is better than everyone in this list.
Well that is maybe what a lot of people think, but I like other singers more. It's called personal preference.

Skin from Skunk Anansie should definitely be on this list !! Even though they're considered a Ska Band some of their songs are more metal than some of these other bands.

As much as i like SA and Skin, she doesn't belong on this list.
Women like Courtney Love (absolutely hate her) are much more fierce and powerful vocally. Listen to Hole's song Violet.
Then there's songs like "Barracuda" by Heart. Or "Send me a Postcard" by Shocking Blue (1968). True early metal that last one!
I would add Sara Jezebel Deva, Amanda Somerville, Charlotte Wessels, Anette Olzon, Kobra Paige, Sabine Edelsbacher, Morgan Lander, Melissa Bonney, Veronica Freeman, and Pamela Moore to at least honorable mention. But Sara Jezebel Deva is in my personal top 10.

I wholeheartedly agree with Floor as #1! Lzzy Hale though should be up there, Taylor Momson is finally coming into her own. Might I mention Jen Majura as well not only for her phenomenal guitar playing but as a solo artist.
