- Here's our top 10 list of who we think are the best female vocalists in Heavy Metal bands. We have not included Lizzy Hale (Halestorm) and Amy Lee (Evanescence) because Halestorm is torn between Rock & Metal genre and Evanescence is Gothic Rock. Also we wanted to include Maria Brink (In The Moment) on our list but almost all their materials were copyrighted. Comment down below if you think we have missed someone in the list.

Saw Nightwish in LA recently and the band with Floor is truly amazing. In my 70 years it had to be one of the best concerts i'd ever seen and heard.
This women along with an incredible singing ability has a remarkable stage presence. I'm still buzzing.
I don't like symphonic meta, but I recognize that Floor has a absolutely fantastic voice. She is beautiful too❤

I fully agree with #1. Floor can do whatever she wants with her voice: opera, scream, and even growl like a lion 🦁. She has an amazing voice and stage presence. Best vocalist (m/f)on the planet. 🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️

Eva Spence is better. It's funny when metal fans say such a popular and mainstream singer is "100% the best no one comes close" there are thousands of woman that come close. And metal fans of all people should understand the most famous and popular are never actually the most talented. These lists are terrible.

@@coreywho2972 Floor is hardly "Mainstream" many people in America don't even know who she is. She's amazing and deserves to be #1. Besides that she's an incredibly modest,nice human being.
It takes some backbone to put the Warlock singer on this list, because barely one knows her, while Doro paved the way for other female singers in metal. It definately makes this list more sane.

Doro is really well known in Metal circles we love her in Glasgow Scotland so she's not the unknown a lot of people think.
Doro has long been the de-facto Queen of Metal.
It's 2022 and I still believe your #1 and #2 choices are intact. Tarja was a #1 choice for many for a long time but Floor is just at another level from all of them She has to be part alien with that otherworldly voice of hers. Hold her out as the best female singer I've heard in my lifetime.

Nightwish is my favourite band and and this is one reason why: Tarja number 2, and Floor number 1. The other reason is Tuomas's awesome song writing skills. BTW, I love Tarja and Floor equally.

Doro ... The mother of all modern female metal singers, at no5. So many of these lists ignore her, but she's aged bloody well and still killing it in her 50s .
Floor at No1 is a given..
However, not a single nod to Fabienne Erni from Eluviete or Masha from Arkona. If you want mixed scream/ clean vocalists , Masha is every bit the equal to Alyssa or titanja . Fabi is incredible as well as a pure singer.
I love Jinger !! But Nightwish is outstanding.
Thank you for including Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-Metal). Saiki from Band Maid as well as Lovebite's Asami would also fit nicely.

1.) Floor Jansen
2 + 3.) Simone Simons & Brittney Slayes ( in no particular order )
4.) Tarja Turunen (not my favorite because of operatic style), but she DOES deserve more than an honourable mention, she is one of the greats of the genre
Like you with operatic style, I am the same with growling, at least as the lead and only vocal. Other than that, I like the list in the video.

@@khymaaren a bit of growling can be functional in the story (like Floor does in Yours is an Empty hope by Nightwish) or as a contrast, like Epica does, but in general I do agree that growling as the dominant style quickly tires, and becomes: "been there, done that"...
Had the privilege of seeing Floor a few times, Sharon once, Tarja once, Charlotte W a couple of times, Alyssa once. I agree with the ordering of this list. But that's my taste. Many very powerful voices on this list. What a great time for metal.
I completely agree with Floor. Her Majesty is IMHO the best, most complete singer/ vocalist of any genre and any gender. When you can make even other vocal coaches lose their shit when reviewing/ reacting to your songs, you know you are The One.
Happy with the first but Simone deserves to be allot higher!!! 🥰

@@ronaldperronjr2247 Floor Jansen is very often called one of the best female singers of the moment in the world by vocal coaches and teachers. Find one reaction video in whic they are so flabbergasted by Tarja. None are. If they listen to Phantom of the opera live with Marko they start praising him lol. Simone does get very good reviews too though.
Yeah, the no. 1 was never in doubt. She can growl, shout, sing opera, musical, pop, soft pop, classic and even religious church music. And she holds endless lines with two sets of lungs. And all styles within one minute, if necessary.
@UA-cam areeffingcommies Can Simons growl? No. Is Tarja as versatile as Floor? No. If you limit it to metal, I can understand different opinions. But as a singer overall, I still think there can be no doubt.
@UA-cam areeffingcommies I know they are all good friends, so I have done my research. I suggest you do yours and look at some opinions of good vocal coaches (like the charismatic voice, one of the top opera singers in the world).

Oh and I haven't seen many (if any) vocal coaches who praise Tarja above Floor except specifically in the more operatic performances.

Even though Sharon is my favorite singer of all time and she will always be, I have to agree floor Jansen is a hell of a singer! What a powerhouse. I wouldn't know a single person who could reach that kind of level!

I’m not a fan of the type of music that Floor, Simone, Tarja, or Sharon create, but I recognize their incredible talent. Even so, I wish that Lzzy Hale, Maria Brink, Ash Costello, and Candace Kucsulain made the list.
As for Maria, apparently In This Moment is brutal about copyright restrictions so these guys can’t include her in any lists. One of them said that exact thing. It’s stupid and shortsighted by the band.

I would have added Maria Brink from ITM but solid list. Floor is right where she should be as the Viking Goddess she is! Love Tarja too but agree Floor is more versatile-there is nothing that woman can’t sing.
All I have to say is that this list is STACKED!!!! True, there should have been more honorable mentions that what was here, but I'm not upset by it. And yes, some should have been in different positions, but for the most part this was great.

I wholeheartedly agree with Floor as #1! Lzzy Hale though should be up there, Taylor Momson is finally coming into her own. Might I mention Jen Majura as well not only for her phenomenal guitar playing but as a solo artist.

Good list with solid choices. It's very difficult to narrow things down to just 10, as there are a whole load more I can think of that are also phenomenal vocalists
I'd also give an honourable mention to Clementine Delauney (featured on an album with Serenity, and now is the female vocalist for Visions of Atlantis). Whilst her body of work might not be as extensive, she is a fantastic singer, every bit as good (if not as well known) as many of the names on this list, and is absolutely epic live

Slays is criminally underrated. That chick has some SERIOUS pipes. Probably the second most versatile vocalist of the group after Floor. She can hit high notes, hold high notes, sing aggressive power metal, folk music, prog metal, opera... you name it she can do it.
She is impressive! I would put her on the same level as Simone Simons
She is a bad ass to be sure. I caught UTA live September of last year when they came through OKC. One of the best live bands I've ever seen. It's probably hard for some people to believe that she can pull those notes off live, but she does and does it incredibly well. She would land in my top five for sure. Right up there with the ladies from Nightwish all three of them, because whether you like or hate Anette you cannot deny the contribution she made to the band. Their two best selling albums have her fronting the band.

Rankings can vary from person to person. Overall a good compilation of female vocals with notable exceptions like Liv Kristine and Anna Murphy

In the description, it says that Evanescence is more gothic rock not really metal, which is why they didn't include them.
@@Brandonmtlhd I see a problem with classification there. Gothic rock is a form of metal, and also the first 2 albums from Evanescence would easily classify as Nu Metal, so technically, yes, they perform metal. Anyways, it is pretty nasty to exclude a singer because you think the band is "more like gothic rock" like if gothic rock wasn't metal at all...
@@alxm1271 Not all goth rock is metal. The Cure is one of the biggest goth bands but they certainly aren't metal. Evanescence only sounds like nu metal in that one song but it is not their typical sound. Most people consider them to be goth-hard rock and not metal.
@@Brandonmtlhd i agree with you that not all goth bands are metal. But you can find goth bands tha play thrash, or even death metal. gothic rock, hard rock, as you mention, or even alternative, should be the genre where you "musically" classify The Cure (although they made pretty different albums, hard to classify, they even have some punk and post-punk stuff). And oh, yes, Evanescence has more than one Nu metal song. Their second album is almost entirely nu Metal, and their 2019(ish) album is some kind of symphonic, so yeah, they are ALSO (not exclusively) a metal band.
Thus, no shame in asking Ame lee to be considered in the list. I pretty much agree with the list, but not giving Amy Lee at least a honorable mention... hmm it's kinda weak.
Yes floor Jensen has got it everyone who's ever played with nightwish was very good but floor just has something different that she brings to the table they all do but dang her vocals just reach to the sky.

It's funny how that Babymetal - Suzuka Nakamoto - *a little Japanese girl* with sweet voice got honorable mentioned along those monsters of singer. xD They're all so impressive, I love Within Temptation, and a big fan of Babymetal for their creativity with music and the energy of their show is just something else

I was gonna say, Floor Jansen better be #1 here. The Tarja era was simply divine. Tarja’s TPOTO my favorite version hands down bc of how well her and Marko played off one another there. That was her last show with NW. I can agree with most of this list, but Simone Simons definitely isn’t #7 and Brittany ain’t #10. I mean imho anyways. To each their own. Sharon is amazing, and she shouldn’t be after Alissa. I love AE, but Sharon is much more complex then Alissa. And Angela, yeah she’s a badass!! I think she did good by picking Alissa to replace her in AE. Su-Metal as an honorable mention. Nah! She’s fucking awesome! Otep, meh. Maria Brink is missing too.

Where is Anneke van Giersbergen? She sings better than most of the singers that appears in this list, not to mention she is one of the pioneers in the European female metal scene
"in this moment" is a great heavy metal band with female lead vocalist/singer!

This just makes me think that Opera/Classical and Heavy Metal are about one in the same simply because of how they overlap and compliment each other. Some of these singers are evident of that having clean clear Opera quality voices and perfectly complimenting the distorted gain of Metal. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if they were classically trained.

Just as a person who's been listening to metal since 2001: a lot of the most versatile singers go into metal because it's more complex and the can flex more of their vocal chops singing metal songs.
Nice work...1 new singer for me to check-out....only miss Dianne van Giersbergen (ex-Xandria) at least at the honorable mentions = also a real good live-singer.

The best thing is...20 years ago there was a very small number to choose from. Just by reading the comments, this could have been a TOP 100 list, and still more who should have made the list. The women of heavy metal have kept the genre alive and well.

I do so much agree on #1 Floor, as well as #2 Tarja. Funny the leading voices have been with Nightwish. Tarja has such an incredible voice but Floor is really on top of that not only with her unbelievable voice but also with a stage presence not seen often as a combination on this planet. I don‘t know many of the other singers except Doro. oime interesting voices but far away from the two Nightwish power ladies. Well done!
Floor was part of the recent „Sing my song“ show in Germany (also known as the „Exchange concert“ internationally IIRC) and she was doing so well with any song she delivered. As part of that group and in real life she seems to be such a shy, cautious and reliable person. This makes it even more impressive to see what a giant she is on stage.
In This Moment, Halestorm and Flyleaf need to be on here. I don't listen to In This Moment since getting saved but Maria Brink has talent. Lacey Sturm is awesome too. Courtney LaPlante from Spiritbox. The Letter Black.. I just feel like there are so many good ones missed. Awesome list, yes, but a few are missing

Not only can this woman growl, but she's self-taught in that regard. And, her cleans are up there as well. The last thing? Ignea has a very unique sound -- sounding as if they should be from Persia, instead of Kyev, Ukraine.

Ok, Floor auf #1 - das ist durchaus richtig. Sie ist eine phantastische Sängerin, keine Frage.
Was mich bissel stört, ist, daß sie nur auf Nightwish beurteilt wird... das Jahrzehnt davor läßt man weg🤔. Ich habe sie als Sängerin von After Forever kennen und schätzen gelernt, bereits 2002. Auch wenn es diese Band leider nicht mehr gibt - vergessen sollte man diese Zeit nicht. Da After Forever vor langer Zeit mit Nightwish zusammen auf Tour waren, war der Schritt von Floor natürlich nachvollziehbar und richtig.
Ganz besonders freut mich auch Doro - so viele Jahrzehnte mußt erst mal auf der Bühne stehen👏🤘👏

Skin from Skunk Anansie should definitely be on this list !! Even though they're considered a Ska Band some of their songs are more metal than some of these other bands.

As much as i like SA and Skin, she doesn't belong on this list.
Women like Courtney Love (absolutely hate her) are much more fierce and powerful vocally. Listen to Hole's song Violet.
Then there's songs like "Barracuda" by Heart. Or "Send me a Postcard" by Shocking Blue (1968). True early metal that last one!
