- The LEGO Star Wars Summer 2021 Mandalorian Starfighter (75316) follows in the footsteps of 2012's Pre-Vizsla's Mandalorian Fighter (9525) set. There are two BIG differences between the two sets in Minifigures & landing gear. 2021 introduces Gar Saxon, Bo Katan, & a Mandalorian Loyalist while 2012 still has Pre-Vizsla, Obi-Wan Kenobi & the Mandalorian leave something to be desired. The box sizes tho…, I think the originally one is sorta better but the new one’s slicker. The original one is just bigger and more accurate then the new one, but the new one has better fits for sure. I’m definitely gonna pick the new one up.

I actually rewatched the show recently and apparently the new one is color accurate to the ones in the show. I’m pretty sure the starfighter “model” is different
@@0netrick198 okay, first of all, the clone wars season 7 came out over a year ago and the rest of the shows featuring the mandalorian starfighter are even older, so it’s not new. Secondly, I meant more accurate as in stud shooters, spring loaded shooters, stupid cockpit, and it’s just overall smaller without landing gear.
@@ethanlee3285 its ok that its smaller. The first version in the show is a little bigger. The lack of landing gear and the gap are unfortunate though.
This will probably be my first set of this wave, because I really wanted to get the original, but it is super expensive because of pre vizsla.

I honesty like the 2012 model better, the white and blue look really good together, and I like the shaping and proportions of the model better. Though the 2021 mini figs are superior
I agree other than the mini figure selection, I heavily prefer the 2012 model. If it had mini figures that good it would’ve won easily.

I have the 2012 version it's good and it's probably better to me but I like the colors on the 2021 set better and also the figs
In the landing position, the 2021 set looks kind of like the older, sad version of the 2012 set.

They are technically depicting different models of the same type of ship.
The old one is a slightly larger ship in the show than the newer one. It is from Season 2 of The Clone Wars. In season 4+, The Clone Wars uses a different model for the ships, and this model is used in Rebels and The Mandalorian.
So that is why the models look so different.
The new set have better figures but the old version is looking more like the fighter and I say that because the front of the new one doesn't look that good as I hope

If I did this, I'd do it like
Minifigures: 2021 for more details and exclusivity to the figures
Playability: 2021 since it's mostly the same, but more shooters
Design: 2012 since it's a bit less detailed, but has proper landing gear
Value: 2021 is slightly higher, but not enough to give it the point, so tie

Not a fan of the flatness of the back of the wings on the 2021 version.
Crazy the dark saber design hasn't changed in like 10 years... Dooku and Ventress get unique hilts, and Kylo and Mace get unique blades, but apparently an accurate dark saber is too much to ask?!
I honestly like the wings on the older version, especially the back part. The 2021 version just kinda squares off on the end whereas the older one has a slope which I think looks a lot better.
I went to my local target the other day and I thought I hit the jackpot by finding the 2021 version and to my sad surprise they tell me I can’t buy it even though there were THREE ON THE SHELF! So ya that’s my Star Wars sob story, target you could do better.
that's normal for target. idk why they will put it up on shelves early since they enforce the street date set by lego and can't sell it until then. it's in their system and even in self checkout, u won't be able to purchase it. just gotta stick to walmart or kohls for tryna pick up early sets

I prefer the 2012 model but, I would just add a bit more detail to it and get the new mini figures for it

75316: I moved the front landing gear forwards a bit and added a single round stud to each piece, at the same time move the rear landing gear out by half a stud and it's a much more stable set when landed.

I like both. I think the original one looks more striking colour wise. But the newer one is more detailed and slicker. I'll be well interested in solving some of the gap issues and landing gear issues with the new one.
I really wish there is a star wars rebels versión of this set called the nightbrother with season 3 Ezra Bridger, Sabine Wren season 3 versión with helmet and jetpack, Ursa Wren, Tristan Wren and Darth Maul Minifigures
I actually prefer the 2012 one for a bunch of reasons that u already said in the video, like size, the landing gear, the studshooters (although I actually like the spring loaded ones), the gaps etc. But I'd like to add one reason. I hate the all tiled sit on the cockpit, it sucks!
When u put the minifigure on this sits, and actually such it around to play, the figure shakes a lot in there, making a really annoying noise and the figure flip upside down and backwards so easily.
As someone that actually play with it...
It really sucks.
I think it would be cool to add a box art tab to the list to compare
I kinda fixed the „landing gear“ from the 2021 set, by moving it 5 studs to the front… It doesnt stand perfectly, but its higher and the rotating feature still works….

I think with the clones and the Mandos they should just have the neck and bottom of the head black with the skin-colored head and face print. That way with the helmet on, the lower neck is black like the body glove and you can see that little part of the head under the helmet is black. Then taking off the helmet you have the face print

Also of note is that they are two different series of ships, with the 2021 one being a Kom’rk Mark II and the 2012 one being a Kom’rk Mark I.

I remember seeing like 3 of the 2012 one at my Walmart in the clearance section back around 2016 I wish I would have gotten at least 1
2021 is my favourite and I am definitely going to buy it.
I love the 2012 version simply for the fact that it came out around such a great time for Lego Star Wars, and the minifigs are awesome as well. I will still buy the 2021 version primarily for the minifigures but the build isn’t that bad either.

It might be super minor but I prefer the *rear cannon on the 2012 version. I like the 2 blasters that actually look like blasters over the one tiny hose piece in the 2021 model that doesn’t look like a blaster at all
Edit: also no mention that the 2012 model actually (somewhat) mimics the “top” of the wings on the bottom. The 2021 model doesn’t do that and looks much less streamlined from that viewing angle
I completely agree with your second complaint about the pattern on the bottom side of the wing being lacking in the new one. Only one side looks good

Just picked this set up a few days ago. Unfortunately mine didn't come with its stickers but I really don't care about that as stickers don't really add any extra value. Besides that I think its a great set and one I recommend. Also its rather easy to add in some landing gear for it

I love the old one more for the build. But the newer set has amazing mini figures
In the 2021 one there is the bottom back part that represents the entrance/exit
Certainly overlooked the 2012 one when it was released, but I suppose the 2021 one will suffice. Sure it doesn't have the storage the 2012 one had, the lack of landing gear does make it a bit annoying to display, and there's a gap in the cockpit, but I suppose I could fix what grievances I have with some modifications. Also, the usage of all those curved and tiled pieces give it a really attractive look to me, though I could see why someone might think that the older one has more of a classic Lego charm to it. Oddly enough, I don't mind the stud shooters and spring loaded shooters, but I can understand why they annoy some people.

For the me main issue for 2012 is the white getting yellow. But the wings moving to much is fixable.
I found all of the new sets early at my walmart. I bought the imperial light cruiser, the mandalorian starfighter, and the marauder.
One thing I appreciate about the new one is the peice usage on the top of the wing. It makes it look so much more sleek and pretty. The old one does have a more classic Lego systems space fighter look
The printing on the 2021 is so amazing
I wanna see someone try and combine these two ships so it has the best aspects from both of them
I feel like there is an ongoing trend that lego will keep testing what they can get away with in sets, the figs in the gunship and the landing gear here are good examples. They know that even with these obvious shortcomings we will still buy the sets. It’s disappointing but it seems like the quality in the LEGO Star Wars line is continuously decreasing. Great comparison though MandR!
Not a bad review, it confirmed that I built my 2021 Mando Starfighter correctly because after I was done building it and saw how it sits(due to the landing gear situation) I thought I might have made a mistake. It's at least good to know there isn't a problem with my set or an incorrect build on my part or anything. Lego simply skimped on the landing gear...but my favorite way to display all of my Lego ships is to hang them with fishing line from the ceiling. Makes the landing gear issue irrelevant and they look cooler flying anyway.
The new one may have more play features, but the old one has better features for sure.

I was really excited to get the 2021 model to display next to my 2012 one… but looking at it in this video I’m not so sure anymore. The lack of landing gear is really lame, the smaller size is a bummer, and I think the cockpit on the 2021 version looks hideous, especially the underside.
The only positives that the new model has is the slick color scheme and highly detailed minifigures.

2012 design looks more impressive (color, wing shape, landing gear) and the “junk in the trunk” is great design. As a kid, before dedicated lego spaceship sets of any theme, I would build ships with such cubby/compartments included. BTW mandr, I’m in my fifties and love your channel!
