I can well understand John Lydons affection for this young guy. He symbolises a shift really. Hard to explain, but he had something authentic about himself and his geographical location. Character, wit and hustspa. And a silly boy too, just a kid.
Totally agree, I didn't realise it at the time but looking back at certain material, such as this and various docs I've been watching recently. I do actually feel so sorry for him. So immature & childish in a way. A tragic life, which then reflected in his end.

I remember reading that his mother was both a drug addict and trafficker when he was just a child. Poor guy didn't have a good chance in life.

I honestly started crying and still am, when he asked Keith to tie his shoes it was so innocently asked and very politely too. he seemed like such a sweet young man I wish I couldve given him a hug and told him it was going to be okay☹

Great time period in musical history
for those who dont know, the man who ties his shoe is keith levene who was in Public Image with John Lydon after this. They were also a great band back then before he left

If you watch a documentary on Sid and Nancy, She had nothing but nice things to say about him. She said that basically it wasn’t his fault for what happened you know she was on the down slope anyway and she doesn’t believe that that’s what happened. She said the last phone call she got from Nancy was a call that was very hunting and saying I love you mommy and please find me and said a rehab because we both want to get clean and we’ve hit rock bottom , and a few days later she was dead , and it was very sad.. She mentioned that Sid wrote her a few letters and was saying how much he loved Nancy , and wrote a few poems , and she just said that he was such a genuinely sweet person. I would love to read those letters! He just seemed so young and innocent, not ready for the world he was thrown into! Shame he had an awful mother and an awful girlfriend! Never stood a chance!
You can read those letters. I borrowed her autobiography from the library. The book is titled " And I don't want to live this life anymore" by Deborah Spungen. The letters are published in the book. I hope you can get hold of the book as you will be surprised at how articulate Sid comes across. I think the book was published in 1989 but I might be wrong about the date. Actually, I think I'll borrow it again next week.
I feel sorry for Nancy caught up with him. He was an absolute rotter.

@@jgreen8220 It was Nancy that ruined Sid's life. She introduced him to heroin. He was a naive London lad, easily led and got caught up with the image of Sid Vicious. Whereas the other Pistol members were wanting to improve their musical abilities. Which they did as all of them have successful music careers to this day. Nancy was a well known groupie and annoyed the shit out of the bands New York Dolls and Johnny Thunders. They went to tour the UK, hoping to get a reprieve from Nancy. But she found out and followed them to London. She tried her luck first with John Lydon(Rotten) and he told her to piss off and as a joke told Sid that he could have her and was surprised when they became an item. John said at the time it would end in disaster. She also fucked Steve Jones from the band and he wrote in his autobiography that he was a sex addict for many years. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with sex or one night stands because there isn't, but just saying Nancy was not an innocent. In her autobiography, Nancy's mum tells of the very difficult life Nancy had from the time she came home from hospital as a baby to when she died. According to her mum she had severe mental illness and was never properly diagnosed.

@Stephen Lindsay sid did shows at max's kansas city with Arthur an jerry nolan from newyork dolls and mick jones from the clash an there's footage of sid singing as the front man they released like 12seconds of it on youtube it was supposed to be out by now but i guess its being used for a documentary called sid the final curtain i just hope we can see the full show soon

They are backstage at the Roxy .The Pistols had just returned from Jersey . Sid was telling them about him farting in the custom officers face when they searched his arse for drugs .. Turn the sound up you can piece it together .I remember reading the transcript years ago about 77 or 78 just after it happened. This is way before he got too messed up on smack with that dreadful slag Nancy .
I didn’t realise that he was so young. I was too young for the punk scene then.
