Before my father passed away when i was a child ffvii and ffviii were the last two games me and him would sit and play together everyday after school. I was about 7 years old then and i remember one day my dad must have been playing for awhile and i suppose he forgot to save because well.. i was playing around and unplugged the playstation andddd.. lets just say i didnt get to have any fun for a few days after that 😅.. so for me final fantasy 7. And the final fantasy games altogether are one of the few vivid memories i have left of me and my father and that makes it hold a special place in my heart and ill always feel a certain closeness to him even though he's gone everytime i play them.

The last gift my grandfather bought me was a Playstation 1 with Final fantasy 7, 8 & 9. He watched me play them everyday as he battled cancer and would love the stories so much so that he had me rush through the games at low levels so he could continue the story faster especially when Ariel died. He passed away in the hospital as I was halfway through FF9, I never finished that game without him.

My first experience of this game was when I went over to a friends to shoot his new air gun rifle. I went upto his room and he was playing this new game he bought called "final fantasy 7", to be honest I didn't like the name but watched him finish up what he was doing. My first image was the menu screen and he was equipping characters and selecting which materia to use. At this point I was memorized solely by the pictures of the characters, all the different choices of what you could do in the menu, and then as simple as it sounds, the bleeps when selecting and going back... after about an hour of purely in the menu came the first battle...! Wow, my world had changed. I then jumped on my BMX and peddled my heart out to get back home and gather my car washing equipment. I then spent the weekend washing cars to make enough to go out (on a school day) to buy my copy. I then tragically came down with a "flu" and spent the week exploring the world of Final Fantasy 7. Great, great times.

      That's an amazing story!
For me it was my mom's boyfriend. I watched him play it for weeks. I tried myself, but couldn't read. So I learned how to read just so I could play it!
I definitely played that game more than was healthy! Started at age 7 on the PC and finally beat it on PlayStation at age 12.
By the time I beat it I already had FF8 - 10, but 7 was the most important to me still.

@Captain Caveman There is a vast amount of years (don't remember how long) between the end of FF7 and the after-credits cgi sequence you're talking about and we the players have no idea what happened during that time frame. You can assume that he became a hermaphrodite but one might find more probable that Nanaki wasn't actually the last of his kind as everyone thought so.

Also in mobile prequel game "before crisis" Red had regular interactions with a female of his kind. Here's hoping they bring back these sub plots in the remakes.

When you scroll through the comments and see so many people sharing memories about the game, it really shows you the power this game had. I was 16 when it came out and I remember wanting a PlayStation for this very game. There was so much hype with this game coming out, almost equal to the hype of the remake. Which probably makes it even bigger for the time since the internet wasn't buzzing with social media. I think a lot of that hype carried over in our nostalgia for FF7. It holds so many good memories for gamers and mix that with the time period of gaming also being such a memorable time with the transition of 3D games, you have this combustible feeling of amazing mind blowing joy. It is like FF7 is a time capsule for that feeling.

The first time I walked over that mini marsh/desert area on the world map when I was a kid, I saw a long snake like shadow slithering everywhere.
At first I thought it was some kind of background aesthetic but oh boy was I wrong. The moment it bolted at me and initiated a battle, a huge Snake was fighting me. Seeing how it towers over Cloud and Co. I knew this was not a battle I was meant to win at lower levels.
So I had to plan my way around the snake and reach my destination. Not to mention that cutscenes when you cross the marsh/desert where you see the same snake impaled into a tree and how the party mentions that it was Sephiroth's doing.

This game was the love of my childhood.
When I first played it, i was hooked by the art style and story. After playing it a few times at a friends house, I started saving my allowance for a Playstation and this game; it took almost two years. I was so in love, I bought the Prima Strategy Guide for it and read it cover to cover long before I had enough money.
When the day finally came, I had the game and console... but I forgot to buy a memory card too. It was a few weeks until my birthday, so I actually played the first couple of hours over and over and over again (even leaving my system on overnight to try and stretch how far I could go without saving; usually around Wall Market being my max).
Finally, I got my card and I was able to save... and the rest is history!
No other game inspired that kind of commitment in me as a child...

He bought the guide book and at the time I was a purist. This game changed that. I wasn't gonna spend the time to level up all the materia to get the freebie master summon bs. Now, we can just take a couple of minutes to look up how to do all of this. I love the game because it was such a challenge and at the time it was the only game I had even seen that was 3 discs. This game is gonna be 30. The 1st disc ended when something happens to aerith or Aeris on my game. I shall wait until after the world map part at least before I buy it. Another thing that people forget about FFVII is how it very expertly introduced many western gamers to the JRPG. I say expertly because of the way it was marketed in the west. If you look at comercials for the game they purposely contained nothing but cut scenes which of course showed off how graphically advanced the game was for the time but also completely hid the fact that it was a role playing game. I remember friends at the time that were "bro" gamers and typically only played sports titles that picked up the game based on what they saw in the marketing and were actually mad that they were duped into buying a JRPG. A genre they had ignored up until FFVII. Some of these players returned the game but a lot didn't and found out they actually liked this type of game. I truly believe that had it been marketed as a JRPG from the start it wouldn't have sold half as well as it did in the US.

I loved FF7 as a kid. It was the first FF I ever played. When I played ff 4 and 6, I realized that 7 was not the peak of the franchise. As cool as Cloud is, he will never be Cecil. And as cool as Sephiroth is, he will never be Kefka.

When FF7 was released I cut grass in the neighborhood I grew up in and saved all my money from that and from chores so I could buy a PS1 and get Resident Evil and FF7. I only had enough for the PS1 and one games so I chose FF7 over RE1 because my friend had RE1 so I could just borrow his. The thing is...I didn’t realize I would need a memory card to save so I had to leave my game on all the time or I would lose my progress. After a week and a half I was able o buy a memory card but not before my dad came in and saw I left my PlayStation on. I was on disk two😢😭. It sucked, however playing through disk one again was great and I needed up playing that game at least 10 more times over the next few years. A ten minute video does no justice to this great game! If you read this and haven’t played it. Do yourself a favor and play through this amazing story. As a side note I would also highly recommend Final Fantasy 9. It has a great love story.

One day, he handed me the controller and told me I could play and I had no idea what I was doing but it was easily one of the most cherished memories I’ve had in my childhood! Fast forward to now and it’s still one of the best games I’ve ever played.

You explain it every so clearly and in my mind, why this game is heralded as one of the greats in Square Enix's repertoire of RPG games made! Excellent! Up to this day, this game stands out for me because of the menu system - I had so much fun playing with the colors of the background and I love the art styles of the characters. Why doesn't any FF game allow me to play around with the background of the menu so it looks pretty when I fight battles? Only FF6 and FF7 I had fun with on that aspect...random, but true.

My memory was a Party my older brother was throwing at home when I our parents went partying themselves for the night. Was watching cartoons and decided to make myself a poor mans smore (microwave a marshmallow on a saltine with a piece of chocolate.) and saw him and 4 his friends in our room huddled round our ps1 drinking and cheering, peaked and saw ff7 for the first time, they were doing the snowboarding mini game and I was wicked into snowboarding at the time, so I nestled on my mattress on floor and watch the drunks play it and I got hooked it into it....he ended beating it while I was in school so I didn’t see the whole thing obviously, but when he joined the military and left me all his games to play while he was gone it was one the first I jumped, and man was I excited to jump on ff8 right after not knowing it wasn’t even a true sequel to 7 confused me I still loved it haha. That’s how I got into the series.

I only played it recently and it was indeed a great game, I just don’t have any bias for it. Other than seeing OTHER people talk about it growing up.
Now here’s hoping Nintendo will FINALLY remake Ocarina from the ground up, with the same level of passion and care as the FF7 remake

Even though I just couldn't get into any of the Final Fantasy games, there's no denying that Final Fantasy 7 was an insanely big hit when it came out. If you were into video games at the time, at the very least you heard and knew about it. It became a really strong part of the PlayStation's image and I knew several people that had the game also. I think it was a similar case with Final Fantasy 8 and 9 also but I heard more then once that they couldn't ever quite measure up to Final Fantasy 7 though. Even though I never really played any of those games it's still hard for me to imagine the PlayStation without them.
