    I used MUS in a very different way. When we started homeschooling after private school this program helped us to determine gaps. We would watch the video lesson and then she would take the test. If she missed more than one or two we would do the lesson again the next day and I'd have her do a practice sheet or review sheet. Using the MUS program strategically helped. This also wasn't the only math program we used. We would go back and forth between MUS and The Good and the Beautiful. Sometimes she sped through, sometimes she needed more time and sometimes we would take breaks from math. Little brains and mama brains need time to process!

    We do sequence one as a family but my older kids do extra books and we do different Devotionals with my older kids than my younger kids!!! My younger kids do their personal devotional so they can learn to read it themselves so if we do family Bible time that isn’t appropriate it doesn’t matter!!! My older kids can do personal Bible time but I have a 13 year old boy who refuses to so I make him do personal devotional daily!!! We switched to a ordinary parents guide to teaching reading and I love the constantly and you add on readers and letter tile activities as you need!!! We didn’t like AAS and I felt like my older kids needed a informal way of improving their spelling and my younger kids use TGTB language arts spelling part!!! My oldest did a sentence diagraming books and loved it!!! My twins have started it but they are doing it slowly as it’s an high level!!! It starts basic but goes up-to high school!!! I loved using MUS as a kid but none of my kids use it as it doesn’t work for them!!! One curriculum I hated my 13 year old son loves!!! As a kid I did it alongside a different curriculum but math wasn’t easy for me so it helped me but my now there are other options for kids struggling with math!!! I’m old school but we find we need a curriculum that encourages hands on learning for math!!! We have my old MUS books so I sometimes use it as a supplement!!! I don’t like MUS anymore!!!

    I am sorry MUS Math didn’t work for your daughter. That’s really hard to feel a whole year was wasted. We started MUS Zeta last Aug and we used that as my son’s sole curriculum. We’d come from Saxon before. It went ok, but I did see the lack of skills being kept up with. He zoomed through that book, Mon a+b, tues c+d, wed E+f, thurs G and Fri test. We didn’t want to skip any pages either. When he finished Zeta and started Pre-Algebra I was really seeing the negative effects of the lack of review, even like consistent long division errors, so now we are back to using Saxon as our main and going one page a day of MUS Pre-Algebra and that’s going really well. I still haven’t decided whether to buy Algebra 1 and do the same thing as we are doing now. Swaying more to doing this since my son is thriving in the actual MUS work and we like the videos, but I definitely see the lack of review and general practice as a problem for us, which is why we won’t even stop using Saxon. I don’t think it would work for us at all if it was our main curriculum.

      I think if we had done what you did with pairing it then that would have been so helpful. This year was such a wild ride that I didn’t even think of it. I’m glad you found a system that works for your son ❤️

    I use Math U See and we definitely supplement a bit because of not enough review. I just really like the visual/kinestetic approach to learning math which is why we have stuck with it. 😃
    I don’t think MUS is Common Core though. I used to teach in public school and MUS is different. It’s definitely different than the traditional algorithm style we were used to growing up, but not Common Core.

    • @HomegrownHomeschool
      @HomegrownHomeschool  17 днів тому +1

      Yeah, I think I just used the wrong wording when describing its sometime long and drawn out approach. I wish I could go back and fix it 🤦‍♀️

    • @kristensantos11
      @kristensantos11 17 днів тому

      @@HomegrownHomeschoolcommon core , to put it in simple terms, is a standardized set of skills per grade level. People often get confused with this. It’s the methodology used today in the public schools that parents don’t like when comparing to the traditional math they learned, not the CCS. Nowadays in the schools, math is taught with deeper conceptual understanding and building of strong mental math skills vs traditionally being given a set of steps with no clear understanding of why those steps work.

    U do a lot of same curriculum as us. My son is a few grade levels older and I will say fix it grammar and IEW are both amazing programs. Don’t listen to ppl that say it’s draining or hard trust the process. As a momma that has a boy that would rather not write IEW has been wonderful.
    We also use math u see and my son has used it since kindergarten and he’s going into 7th grade. It’s been fabulous for him. It doesn’t work for my daughter, mastery just doesn’t work with her. It’s not considered common core though because it’s not grade based and in order for it to be common core it needs to be grade based. It’s all based off mastery. I see where u may feel that though because they do teach some common core values but not in the same recommended order as a public school would teach it.

    • @HomegrownHomeschool
      @HomegrownHomeschool  17 днів тому +1

      Ahhh I see what you mean about the grade levels. I should have phrased it in a different way. I meant common core in their approach to teaching how to solve a problem in multiple ways, some being long and drawn out. Thank you for the clarification.
