I wasn't aware colleges do not pay taxes. This makes me absolutely sick. My student loans are earning $42 a day in interest. Absolutely disgusting.

Specifically because anybody with that much of a golden egg wouldn't have it in savings. There's tons of other places to have money where they aren't losing money based solely on inflation alone.
A savings account is almost always low yield, the target inflation is 2% in the US. Anything in a savings account is literally going down in value. Also banks are only insured up to $250,000 so anything more than that in a bank account is just stupid.
Spent $1,500 to get my CDL-A at the age of 21, worked at a company for 3 years making around $70k/year, lived with my parents and save most of my money, then I started my own trucking company now Im making over $100k/year. My cousin got a psychology degree from a UC over $40k in debt and works for me.

I did 4 years. Graduated with my bachelors in biology of science with Honors from FAU. I couldn't get a job that would.pay atleast 20$ an hour. So i studied for less then six months and got my roofing license and now making over 100k a year and not working every day.

I had a worthless required Business Communications class...where the professor was in on a textbook scam. He had selected chapters from a textbook published by the university, priced it at $120 and required it for the class. These selected chapters came from an old book that you could buy whole on Amazon for about $10.
I want to know how we can hold colleges accountable. I have 2 children in college right now. 80% of their classes are ONLINE. Not only that, there are NO Professors involved. They are basically teaching themselves for $23,000 a semester!

For a piece of paper and a resume entry. First job after college is when you really start to learn in chosen field... I wouldn’t do college these days... but you have to be sensible and strategic which they don’t teach in high school or college.

I’m 18 and my older brother always told me that college is a scam and most of the people that earn a degree aren’t smart enough to get a job on top of their 100k debt. I just graduated from highschool and I’m heading to lineman school in 3 weeks to learn a trade and the starting salary ranges from 80k - 120k a year. After I save up I’m starting a business or investing in something that I think will make me money. I’m one step ahead of the game with no financial responsibilities and a long life to live. This video should be an eye opener to many high schoolers that think they’re obligated to go to college.
You won't get paid anywhere near that as a starting salary but yeah college can be a scam depending on where you want to work
@@lasenyo7705 not to mention you have your apprenticeship and certifications to go through. This level of pay is attainable in 5-10 years depending on how you play your cards. But you better be damn sure you know your shit, there’s a reason for the hazard pay. I’m not trying to shit on you, I think you have a great idea of what you want to do and you sound like a smart kid, just make sure your expectations are within reality or else you’ll be that guy that can’t stop living in the past saying “oh I could have made this” or “I should have done that”

College is required for professions such as engineering, medicine and the law. Trades such as auto mechanic, plumber and electrician can be covered through apprenticeships and on the job training. Oh I forgot, America considers being a 'tradesperson' as low level until you need one!
Yup. And majority of public schools and teachers say “Go to college” meanwhile a mechanic earns so much more than them.
People turn their nose up at so many good paying blue collar jobs (good union jobs in northern states) that start off making more than the crappy standard 45-50k office job basically fetching coffee. Plus your trade is portable easier to start your own company when you are ready.
Trade people are more way more valuable then English teachers, psych majors, hell maybe even athletes
I'm not even sure it should be required for those professions anymore: all the knowledge can be learnt online from the best in the world, yes, you could have in person exams and practical lessons, but then it would be very similar to a trade, just longer... No reason to pay that much or have to sit in class for hours everyday

I live in California, and some employers are actually asking for a bachelor's degree in order to apply for receptionist positions- it's sad. These positions do not pay above 30k btw. I've seen them listed on Craigslist and Indeed.
I have a 4 year degree, and I don't regret it, but I recommend you learn a skill.
A degree *helps* employ you, but a skill makes you valuable.

@A Person I speak Spanish, and it is still hard. They always try to look for something where they can low ball your pay. You have a degree, GREAT, but you lack 20 years of experience. Consequently, we can o ly offer you minimum wage.

Since I graduated from college, I have been an advocate against going to college. It is a waste of money and time, and it is the biggest scam of all time.
Me too! I received two bachelors degrees (business and computer science), and I don’t need any of it for my current job. Employers won’t even look at me for technical jobs (due to no experience or certification). I’m pissed that I wasted time and money ($55,000 and now $80,000 after interest)!!

It's true yet it's a mistake as well.. For you to be able to work, the employers will still be selective by seeing the grades, degrees, and experiences obtained during those days you are in colleges. Yes, in the final selection phase, the degree may not actually play any significant part, but it's the 'gateway' for you to pass 1st filtration.
Unless you're one of the few geniuses. Please don't include them in this discussion since they won't be paying at all thanks to scholarships.

What I don't understand is why I need to take English 101 or Humanities to learn how to become an Ultrasound Technician or a Car Mechanic? Why do I need to waste 4 years of my life when I can learn the skills essential to my trade in 2 years or less? It's about learning a skill so I can earn money to live. Academia for academic sake is great if you are training to become a teacher that will train the next generation.

My undergraduate alma mater is like that. Several professors there have made the news with statements or incidents that are outright socialist, communist, or just plain crazy--but they sure don't mind hitting the alumni up for money.
The last financial figures I saw indicated that it costs about $75,000 per year--but that's OK, because almost everybody is on some kind of scholarship or student assistance. That makes it fair and equitable.
Plus, for the elitists among us, they still have Greek fraternities and sororities.

I drove that truck for years. I would much rather go to college. Truck drivers don't make as much as you think. Getting 2 days off a MONTH is not a way to live.

I realized college was a joke the first time I attended a class, I've been going to college for almost 3 years now and honestly I could have learned everything I have learned doing google searches for an hour.

I agree 99%. That one percent is because u get some industry contacts and some very small resources can't be found on Google that u can get from universities.
Of course rich and powerful or rich and powerful wanna-bees have excellent reason to go to top ivy league school - to make connection with other rich and powerful. That's the real reason to attend top level college such as harvard etc.

I agree, but not everybody have those family or social connections. It used to be that if your father is in a certain profession, you can expect to be in the same profession. With the education system, some less fortunate folks can have a shot at learning a trade without the social connections.

I mean it was already going on 40 years ago.
As was I, taught 16 yrs (VOC ED), as an engineer, ages 38-54. Finished up as a steam plant operator at UNCG.
I was able to learn more on UA-cam within 30 minutes compared to the stress and amount of meaning less things I have to do in school for 7 hours

I'm a proud high school dropout in the 9th grade. now 14 years later I own multiple properties several small businesses, and work a job part time. I'm rent free, car payment free, debt free. I do not even have established credit. I will be retired from working part time by 35. I can't say the same for all my buddies who told me I'd never be anything but a minimum wage slave forever. One of them even had to borrow money from me twice. Another one, I sold a used Lexus to for 3,000 bucks, and he had to make payments, wtf. But who am I, I'm just that high school dropout. who won really.

It stopped being about education when it turned into a for profit business. Years ago we dropped our son off at a college campus in PA along with thousands of other kids... as we were unloading his personals I overheard one of the senior staff members remark ( half of these people will drop out within a year ) it was like she was saying we have your money now you can go.

Best piece of advice I can give, focus on 1 skill you want to learn that you believe can make you 6 figures and stick to it for 6-12 months. Give it all you got and don’t be distracted by shiny objects. This is exactly what I did, but it took me a few years to understand it, I got a few vids on my channel that might help the few of you asking how. Like I said self-education and discipline is what defines success in any business.

It is what it is, all that money 💰 take it and invest it in yourself, unless you’re going to be a doctor or something like that, you’re better off taking the money and invest it in your own company or your new home, everything else you can learn it for free, all the information that you need to be successful is available for free, it’s up to you to read and take the time to learn, just got to have the discipline to do it, that all.
Personally, College was a massive waste of time and money, I’ve learned way more after College by reading and even by subscribing to good channels here on UA-cam, it only takes the will to do it.
The Internet is the greatest source of human knowledge - ever - use it to become educated for largely - FREE!

Thomas Kolter - I got dragged through a brutal & quite unnecessary divorce because my X saw it as a useful diversion to avoid facing up to her toxic childhood ! The fact she wrecked the entire family was of no consequence to her. So while my life has been financially ruined by my X ( back then I was operating in an information vacuum/ no internet & no Freedom of Information Act ) & have now become a much more psychologically mature more evolved person. Not the same because you need to develop soft skill such as leadership, communication, teamwork, or problem solving and you do that in school. learning in the internet is just showing you have educational knowledge but it doesnt show how you apply it for a real job. Plus sometimes you need to do hands on work or lab especially if youR an engineer and school provide you that resources. Leaning online is not the because back then we donT have internet in the 80 oR 90.

Well to add to your depression I’m a Mexican construction worker , when I came to the US they bumped me up ONE FULL YEAR in HS after taking a test, they said I had about 30% English (it’s taught In Mexican schools by default) and I was way ahead of American students in everything. Moreover I know Mexicans that have taken their kids back to Mexico and guess what , lo and behold it isn’t rare for a US student to be DEMOTED one full year because of underachieving...in fact I know two kids personally. The US education system is a joke... and college a huge scam. Now that said, my son is in college now to become a robotics engineer ... he was a math gifted student in Hs. I only agreed to him going to college because I don’t want him building houses like I do but I’m afraid of him not learning anything and struggling to get a job. We are paying cash for his college tho , to hell with those loans. Pray for us
The problem begins in early public education for most of us that weren't born with a silver spoon in our mouth. By the time we "graduate" from high school, we should be way more prepared to tackle more advanced subjects in college but we are not. I once worked as a math tutor in a community college branch on a poor part of town. The majority of the people I helped couldn't even add positive and negative numbers...and they either graduated HS or got their GEDs to enter community college. What does that tell you? It tells you that most teachers from K-12 don't care.

These cousins were many times younger than me. I didn't understand that for years especially since the USA is the richest country in the world and Mexico, without trying to be disrespectful, is no where near that. But I have a theory that I think its worth looking into. Tell me what you think. Many decades ago, public education in America was DELIBERATELY dumbed down. Why, because they didn't want too many prepared and qualified American citizens for corporations to have pay them good salaries and benefits. Instead, they preferred smarter foreigners who worked harder, worked longer hours, complained less and did it all for less pay. Same reason manufacturing was shipped over seas. He is your son and have every right to wish for him to do this or that, but I ask you, what is wrong with building houses? Did you know that there are many immigrants, like yourself, that have prospered in this country and even become wealthy by working with their hands. How many college graduates are in debt for being pushed by their high school counselors to go to college at any cost and pay off their loans once they graduate? Instead of telling some of them the truth, that they weren't college material, and encouraged them to study a trade instead? They misled them! I took wood shop and metal shop in middle school. By the time I got to High School, the only trade class was basic auto mechanics but shortly after I graduated, they did away with that too. So the new push was for American kids from public schools to go to college regardless if they could afford to do so or not, or worse, whether they qualified to go to school or not. The loans would take care of it. Look at this country now. I've been working for IT for a few years now, and though it pays ok, I don't think I want to do it forever. For one, they expect you to master more and more new technology that keeps changing by the minute but does not necessarily pay you more for it. Plus it isn't healthy to sit down for 10 hours behind a desk each day and going home too mentally tired to want to do anything else. I'm am actually in the process of practicing small drywall repair to make some money on the side and who knows, maybe starting a little business doing it. In construction, you get a workout while you are making money. And if you are smart, like you, you make a darn good living at it. The problem in this society Dave is that blue collar work, including working with your hands, was stigmatized and became unattractive to young students. That is why my dad, like you with your son, with a good intention in his heart, probably made a mistake in telling me to go to college and not do drywall like he did. He probably just went by Spanish TV campaign ads that encouraged Hispanics to go to college, or encourage their kids to do the same. So I say again, how did that turn out with the student loan crisis we face now in America?

I agree, and I have a B.A. and an MA, but from long ago when it meant more than now. The education helped me tremendously but the degrees didn't ever help me professionaly.
In fact, it was generally held against me, by bosses that were afraid I could replace them. High School used to be "high", that is quality, not non-sobriety. Now it is a warehouse for students. I recommend that younger students consider the trades, welding, plumbing, electrician, etc., They pay well.

I transferred from the National Guard to the regular army when it finally became apparent that my political-science degree wasn't going to get me hired anywhere else. When I got out, I figured my combination of education and experience (including Gulf War combat) would be enough to get "a foot in the door" somewhere. I figured wrong. I was magically transformed from "inexperienced college kid" to "overqualified veteran." Fortunately, I was a pretty good student in high school and received enough scholarship and grant money to not actually have to borrow a dime until my junior year, so I was out of debt by the time I was discharged and didn't owe a crushing amount in any case...but it still wasn't worth it.

It may take some work and time to find a job, but it will pay off. I am 6 months into my career as an EE. I work in power electronics and control, and absolutely love what I am doing. I had to extend my job search to across the us, and had many dud interviews; however, I took each one of those as a learning opportunity, and it worked out in the end.
The worst part of the College system, besides the debt, is the lack of helping you transition from school to business. 7 months with a Computer Science degree in San Francisco, and still can't find a job... I know when I do, the 130k in debt I owe will go away pretty quickly with the high salaries here. But still... I wish that 46k per year I payed helped me more. That said, college was the best decision I ever made. GL finding high paying jobs without a college degree (unless you can demonstrate something amazing).

They should be lucky to even have you working for them. They don’t teach the best way to think in college. They educate mentally, and that is it. I read regularly and my books only cost $10-20 a piece. It sounds to me like you didn’t make the best decision. If that is the best decision of your life, your kids are going to hate you when they become adults. Please don’t take offense, I’m only being honest. Im not someone to lie to you. You’re in control of your future. The decisions you make this year determines where you will be in life. You have it inside of you to be extremely successful financially if you choose to be. Just like me. Except i stopped it after community college. 1 month into uni and I dropped out. I knew after 2 weeks in there it wasn't meant to be there. Now I do independent projects. Family highly disapproves and I don't give a shit.
I was like you and it took me forever to finish...15 years. Fortunately, I started college in the fall of 1983 and did the first 4 years at community college. There is NO WAY I could have flaked like that now. Community college was $50/semester and then when I transferred to CSULB, it was about $400/semester. I used to sign up and drop. No way could anyone do that now. I suffered and lived at home so I didn’t graduate with debt. I thank God that I had the luxury to make mistakes. The young kids now don’t have that. The worse thing that happened to me was that my dad never let me forget what a flake I was.

I think the solution is simple:
1. Make it illegal to require a degree for a job out side of medicine.
2. Tax the University
3. Set the limit on how much a university can charge students.
4. Chage the recognition of degrees to be based on core class credits not overall credits earned. And make it illegal for university to force student to take non-core classes inorder to be qualified for higher core classes.
Honestly we just need to end government subsidies and end government student loan forgiveness. These two things are the reason universities can still charge absurd amounts of money and people still go. Price caps would just lead to universities closing instead of lowering prices.

I believe that to improve the education system is by talking to teacher themselves. I am trying my best to get people that I interview to see that it is a big problem. I was in the special education. I thought I was stupid. Sadly, no one has taught us about skills. It important.

I'd like to see the United States reform their education system into a Certification System. You go to public school for so many years and are trained personally by Artificial Intelligence combined with tutors (Teachers reformed) on a one-on-one basis for areas you're having difficulty with. If you finish the certification program before you're 18, you're legally certified at that age. This way if you're 12 and done learning Calculus AB and BC and Statistics and Probability (which would be reformed into one massive Math section combined with Science) then you can get certified and go on ahead and be qualified to work rather than attending a college another 4 years for no reason other than to indenture yourself to some loan program.

Go to a community college for 2 years, get enough credits, and then go to a college you wanted to go to. You're almost guaranteed to be accepted and it's way cheaper.

THANK YOU! I tell people this all the time. I did the exact same thing. I then took a break to go work after getting my 2 year degree. Then when I was 25 I was eligible for full financial aid (the govt stops taking into account your parents income at that age for eligibility) and was able to transfer and get a BS from a university completely for free. No debt, and payed less then $10k for the first 2 years I attended my community college.
That's excellent sound advice. Community colleges can really help ease the financial burden of paying for a 4 year university, or college. Don't forget too that there's The College Level Examination Program (CLEP), which is a program that enables students to earn college credit for introductory-level courses by achieving satisfactory scores on subject-specific tests. If you achieve a certain score, then you can receive college credit without having to spend money taking more classes. It's another GREAT way to cut the expenses of pursuing a 4 year degree.
I'm doing that right now. On top of that, I got my first year of C.C. free because of financial aid (apparently my school was giving it away to everyone who was taking 12+ units because of a law in my state) so I get to save even more money. Yay for me!

The cost to payoff ratio for lower or middle class people is too low and has been dropping too quickly in recent decades. All my friends went to good colleges and always had good grades in highschool. I was ditching school everyday and almost failed out. 5 years later after highschool. On the 1st day of registering for classes at a local NJ college my son was asked: "Would you like to take the course on 3rd World Women's issues?" $18,000 in tuition to take courses like 3rd World Women's issues? My college was not a scam. It's a scam if you are stupid enough to pick the wrong degrees. I paid $52,000 for my 4 year degree at an average state school and my starting pay was $91,000. Then the company I worked for paid $25,000 for my masters degree which bumped my pay up to 120k. I picked a degree in demand.. NOT a degree that makes me feel all fuzzy inside. I work 7 hours a day, make 120k, and spend the rest of my time all warm and fuzzy living life the way I want.

It does work to an extent, but you will not work alongside people with similar interests and expert instructors. Self-education is only really beneficial to people with a really solid foundation. The point of a lot of these comments about “self-learning” is to research and demonstrate knowledge on a particular area, which can be done outside the constructs of 100k in student debts and a piece of toilet paper you can hang on your wall. There is very little you learn in college that cannot be learned at a library or online for free. The point is, is that having a bachelor’s degree as the bare minimum is useless, because it doesn’t necessarily mean that person can actually apply the worthless memorization they learned in college. I’m fortunate that both my kids fell in love with being paramedics and so that meant they went to a local school for training. Both got hired into the work force easily and then with that income, they are taking correspondence course to get degrees needed for advancement.
The thought of getting wrapped up into the cost of universities today is financially traumatizing because of the debt load, or the dollar cost if paying cash. It’s sickening.

College is a scam-- financially, but still, I got jobs paying well after graduation. College allowed me to access to a lot of things related to my major --talks from people who "made it " in my field" and I had good jobs in my field . The only thing is students can choose after they graduate - college or the military. Kids DO NOT GIVE UP ON COLLEGE YET. Watch it because they played this same game of "college is not necessary" when I graduated in the 80's and I almost talked myself out of going. Glad I went and graduated.

I feel like an idiot for being in debt. I love my education experience and I can definitely say I learned and grew a lot in college, but I see friends who didn’t go to college and have more money or freedom because they’re not tied to a loan.

I went to CSULB in the 90s. It was $480/semester for a full load. A degree cost under $4,000 with tuition and some fees. Books were about $100/semester if you bought NEW books. Parking was $50/semester. I can’t believe how much it costs now...and it’s cheap compared to the UC system.
It's tough cause you also have to live on campus for 4 years. Even with no tuition, it can still rack up

I've always heard stories from teachers saying how fun and exciting college is... But, I have always known they were full of bs. Yeah, you might have fun here and there, but at the end of the day it's a waste of time, money and more money.

I just finished high school and I’m so glad my parents were okay with me not going to college. I’m starting to do real estate and I’m trying to learn more about investing. I feel bad for my friends because they just don’t believe when I tell them they’re wasting their time going to a university.

College is definitely worth it if you are interested in the following fields: medicine, engineering, law, business, finance
Otherwise, go learn a trade or get certification for something and kickstart your career in less than 4 years
I'm a junior accounting student have plenty of friends already going to med school and graduating to go to higher than minimum wage jobs. It's not really a waste of time and money, you can get better paying jobs by default when you have a bachelor degree.
Higher education is not to major in anything, but learning how to learn. After graduating, everything is returned back to school and start from scratch. The worst investment is textbook. Get used books or rentig digital versions.
The notion that college is the only path for a bright future is BS. But the popular response that college is a complete waste is also just as much BS. The point that people need to know is that college isn't a passive gateway towards success. You can't just leave high school not knowing what you want in life and sign up for college thinking that it's your best option. College is an extremely valuable tool that comes with a hefty cost. So you better know what you are buying and why you need it before you invest.

I don't regret going to college, but if I had to do it all over I would take a couple of years after high school to travel and work menial jobs at factories, fast food joints, or even at shopping malls before I head to college. I think it would have helped me get an understanding of how the world works before choosing what it is I wanted to study and do for the rest of my life.

I have a four year degree. We were not given any occupational counseling at all and there should have been. It wasn't as if I was ready to walk into a job ready to work with the education. I agree with you totally.
Now I know why it feels like the kids are set up to fail. If that many government officials are sitting on the board, that means they’re also choosing what curriculum the kids ingest. This means from Beginning to end our kids are just being taken advantage of

Unless you want to be a Medical Doctor, Lawyer or Engineer, go to a cheaper community college for a two year degree in a marketable skill or go to trade school for a couple years. You may also find on the job training in some occupations.
