I'd say schools are implementing communism-enforced capitalism.
No free market, you HAVE to buy exactly those books for those courses, AND we'll maximize our profits out of the books we're forcing you to buy. No free choice like in capitalism, no low prices / redistributed wealth like ideal communism. The worst of both worlds, monopoly of the market.

I’ve been talking about a gap year with my parents for a few years now and I only have a few months left before I decide to go to college or take a gap year. I know with confidence that I would be happier on a gap year and that I need some time to mature and reflect on life. However, here in Ireland you can’t defer scholarships, so I’d be losing out on €20,000 if I took a gap year. I personally would rather go without the money, but my parents are mostly paying for uni and they want the money so I get called selfish for talking about gap years.

@@benjaminsibson8760 Replying to my original comment and yours after a year or so of more experience. I still stand by the original statement, however, you do have a fair point. So here's how I would word it differently:
If you're not motivated for school (because you know you're not developing the skills and self-awareness needed for entrepreneurship) but you can get up -for entrepreneurship- (to learn and improve on the side), that might be a sign to look more into entrepreneurship. Don't ignore your energy. (Furthermore, if you're only in it to make money, get out of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is NOT easy. I repeat, NOT easy. You will feel like you're grinding yourself to death at certain times. If you want to just make a lot of money, get into computer science or medical, etc. A profession that can make you a lot of money. I'm telling you right now, since the roadmap to becoming an engineer or doctor is already mapped out and clear, you just have to hit your goals.)
Basically, if you're trying to flex: stop. Entrepreneurship is not for you. Get a nice job and learn how to invest in a smart manner (not get rich quick) and you'll have your money. But yes, to your point Benjamin, the title "entrepreneur" or "CEO" has been glorified much like "being a rapper".
Much love and hope everyone gets the self-awareness to feel comfortable doing what they think they're the best at! 💯

    • @sunnychopper6663
      @sunnychopper6663 4 роки тому +4

To add to this, I would say that if you do end up taking the entrepreneurship route, get ready to get out of your comfort zone and do things that make you EXTREMELY uncomfortable. You will face problems that you will find impossible to crack until you actually crack them. You will question yourself and your faith in yourself nearly every day. Like I said, it's not easy.

What you were saying about the peer pressure from parents is totally true. I have been going to schools which are seen as schools for generally wealthier people, and the amount of pressure most parents in these type of schools put on their kids to go to universities or colleges "that have a good name" is insane. The funny thing is most of the pressure is not even about the learning environment or the standard of education that those colleges or universities have, but the parents trying to boast about how intelligent their kids are and how prestigious the schools are that they attend.
It's almost like a competition where the parent which has their kids in the best school wins all the respect. It is really sad that most wealthier parents don't even recognize the damage this does to their kids as their kids don't even persuade careers they want, solely because of the parents sense of self-importance.
Please reply if you can relate to this, I would really like to know your view about this problem.

Hi, i have a big question. People go to universities, high school etc, because they are principaly afraid of doing no money or not good money without a degree. And they think that to get a good job that gives good money, you need a degree. In this world today, can every drop out or most of them find a good well paying job ( even with promotion and time, a good career without a degree ) ?
I'm not talking about entrepreneurship cause it depends if you start from zero or a job or other case.
That's why personnally, i continue to going to college to study digital marketing ( And for the 1 year of entrepreneurship what i wanted to make, i think i can succeed maybe without it but i will see).
Because i can't see myself have a good job, or good career without a degree and so without good money, even in sales and commission. And if i need some money before starting a compagny. (Here in france, only sales jobs earn good in commission, not real estate agents. And in the top of that, business owners commission like Trivago can do a lot of money but it's for entrepreneurs).
And yes, this side of the world is not shared at school because they want your money and school is made by entrepreneurs i agree.
AND i want to notice that in France, studies cost for me NOTHING compared to the debt poor US and others countries students have to PAY for. I pay my university only 164 per YEAR. And the only universities that cost a lot are the best. Commerce universities are costing a bit more but compared to US that's actually nothing.
I'm from France and asked this question that every day goes to my brain. I wanted to make know you the situation in France that schools CAN make less but when DONT WANT specially in US. It depends of the owner.
( Like my teacher said : if you are here good, if you're not, it's good too cause school get money from you).
My friend also have dropped out so if you can please anwser or helping saying the right questions, i would be glad for all drop outs.
My path in few words :
(4 YEARS more of studies before beginning job+ 1 YEAR of master enterpreneurship), i'm actually 19.
      = Digital marketer, minimum 3k/month - max 10k / month
+ if i can transit to entrepreneurship via a compagny created or if a owner ask me to manage for him.
+ Investing in real estate and pay 0 tax if I can (Even Amazon do it cause it's legal)
But if I drop out, can I or other one find a good job career without degree, so i can be more sure that doing entrepreneurship (to save some money before create it) and investing in real estate would be possible ?
I ask this question to for the drop outs and my friend. Big big thanks to you.
PS : Maybe one day, someone will do like Uber have done, make a university, more effective and cheap but it's profitable for them and everyone will be happy.

I would stay in university to develop that self-discipline if I were you, especially since all of your money and time would be wasted if you do drop out since you wouldn't get that piece of paper by dropping out. As others have already said, self-discipline is about finishing seemingly-daunting tasks that require effort and pain to finish without procrastinating, even though you don't want to do it. I suggest for you to find reasons that are bigger than excuses if you're a procrastinator.

I think this is one of the most valuable videos on UA-cam this time, I'm from India and people in my country have wrong attitude or wrong approach towards education and learning as most of them either under peer pressure or under the influence of parents end up in engineering, medical colleges without knowing the actual reason why they are really there apart from the reason of playing a role of engineer in their jobs which most of them are not capable of not because of the education system but because of their attitude towards choosing such a course . I think Mr Patrick has done a wonderful job doing this video and I really appreciate that it will help us and future generations to come .

    A business?
When I started my first business, people told me that starting a business young is stupid because it'll fail.
When people found out I was writing, suddenly I was told I needed a degree in order to be successful writer. Now I do believe that a college degree will make me a better writer, but I can't afford a degree and I already had some small successes writing without a degree. If I ever become a published writer, it'll be ironic to all those people who told me I'd fail. Lol

I have mixed feelings about this. When I first came to University, I hated it. I thought it was useless, and coming into college I thought it wouldn’t teach me what I needed to know on how to run a business (I’m a business major). Although I almost dropped out I decided to stay because I had a full tuition scholarship and even had my rent paid for. But as I began networking I met people who were getting great jobs after college and it open my eyes to the opportunities that are available. I have seen people get six figure salaries right out of college. And for being 21 or 22 that is amazing. You always here the bad stories from people going to college but never the good ones. If you network and put in the work you can get amazing jobs.
I am 21 and I just graduated from college two weeks ago and will be starting my new full-time job as a Project Manager in June making $78k my first year. That is in the state of North Carolina which is very good for a new grad! There are so many good roles out there that people are not aware of and if you the right people I think it’s a great option.
P.S. I am a first generation Latino college grad!

I must say that watching your videos I find it fascinating how much honest, realistic, and positive you are as a person. I came from the rock bottom in a small country and everyone in my environment were so judgmental towards rich and successful people. Constantly saying how they are all crooks and bad people and that they've accomplished everything with frauds, and criminal, which is often case over here. But I always wanted to be successful and maintain my honesty and values and even though everyone told me it's impossible I kept going, and right now I work for an amazing agency and my CEO told me to watch your videos to educate myself, and I am more than grateful both to him and to you. I see you as a role model and a living proof that you can be successful and well situated without being pure evil on two legs. So thank you. :)

I dropped out and told my parents that I didn't want them paying for my college education. Many years later, I developed indoor/outdoor golf schools. It was a fantastic learning opportunity. I'm a visionary. I've had many great ideas where people thought I was completely bonkers! One of them was the concept of Netflix, before there was a Blockbusters! I didn't follow thru with it because I started to believe that I it was better to have the good opinion of people and be well-liked rather than take crazy risks on concepts people couldn't conceive. Now, many moons later, having learned my lesson(s), I'm back and I know who I am.
I want to thank you for these fantastic coaching sessions! My take-away is: find something that makes you crazy excited to create, find a mentor, become an expert, and believe in yourself, then follow-thru!

Now that i am 24 years old and about to approach age 25, I must say that I learned more things when I dropped out of college compared to when I was in college at the time when I was 21 years old. I was ''studying'' in college for one semester only. Here are some lessons and life experience or wisdom I have acquired, as far as advanced learning and competence is concerned:
    * learning requires memory, and memory is created during sleep thanks to protein synthesis, so make sure you get at least 7 hours of sleep
    * writing and taking notes in a notebook is one of the best ways to document and recall or retrieve information when you need it later on
    * listening is slower than reading, so make sure to ask questions and identify key ideas or concepts whenever you learn something new
    * the fastest way to learn is by imitation and repetition
    * the best way to learn is by teaching because teaching helps you engage with the information in an interactive and dynamic way. there is a saying: ''to teach is to learn twice''
These are the lessons I have learned so far. I guess it all comes down to the topics and the subjects you are actually curious about that allows you to be like a sponge and take in as much information and technical details about every aspect of whatever it is you want to learn. Now, as I mentioned earlier, I dropped out of college at age 22 only after one semester, thinking that I made a mistake or a wrong decision when choosing a major. I chose a major to become a consultant when I was 20 years old, and now that I am 24 years old, things came full circle unexpectedly. Now that I look back at those confusing times in the past, not really knowing if I made the right decision or not, I can confidently say that I have no regrets whatsoever. There are perhaps a few things I wish I had known at the time, but things worked out pretty well, regardless of how much struggle and adversity I went through. If you're reading this comment and you think you made the wrong decision by choosing the wrong major or dropping out of college completely, I am here to tell you that you might've actually chosen the right alternative after all. There is a very poetic and philosophical quote in the movie Matrix when Neo sits down to speak with an oracle, and the oracle says: ''You didn't come here to make the choice. You've already made it. You're here to try to understand why you made it.'' I couldn't have said it better.

Some really great points were made in this video. I couldn't agree more with it. I fit the description of reasons not to go to college. I wasted 3+ years on college and learned nothing from it. because I was doing the wrong thing. I had no business being there. If you don't plan on being a doctor or something related, college is Incredibly stupid. If you're an entrepreneur at
heart (as much as that word is overused) then college will only slow you down.
And one more thing.... If what you're studying or are considering studying can be learned much faster without college, at your pace, then you'd only waste your time attending.

It's been 2 years since i graduated highschool. I skipped the college part and moved to another city alone. At the moment i wanted to become an artist. I got a job i wanted. I think not to enrolling in university stuff was the greatest decision in my life. Just have your own mind, question everything, what do i want? learn about what is money? what is business? How does it work? Should i pursue my passion? What is passion? etc.
Now, i only got a purpose to achieve financial freedom. Because at last of all, there's no such thing as fullfilling job. Everysingle day, i'm thinking and trying to figure out the way to achieve it. Problem is in our mind. We gotta do what we have to do and learn to love it.
I also used to think that money is not that important, but if we just calm down and open our eyes, almost everything is measured by money, whatever we want we need money. But it's nothing about money, it is about luxury of time and peace of mind. So we gotta do something that makes money. Don't just blindly do what gives you pleasure. Constantly making mistakes, losing money, time, and effort. But that's part of the process, i learn so much from that.
And i'm still having party sometimes, kind of enjoying it. College is not a choice if you truly want to live freely. That's what i would say to youth in my age.

This is incredibly amazing! I recently graduated with honors from highschool and so far highschool has taught me... NOTHING. I've always wanted something bigger in life, and I've decided to take a year off to smell the world a little bit and guess what? It's been extremely fascinating. I've learned how the real world works outside of the school walls. I'm an aspiring entrepreneur, and I've been trying to start somewhere. I am working on a project, and I hope for the best and that it goes well. However, it makes me very upset when others say "Oh you should go to college, you're too smart not to go to college ". ...But as I apply myself, what if I become too smart for college? I'm learning with my older sister on how the world " really " works. The whole school system, government system, economic system is so deceptive, and couldn't be further from the truth! I originally didn't go because I had some medical issues, but I'm pushing through. After watching this video tonight really shows me how we don't have to follow a certain system to be successful. I disagree with the full ride. In many cases you certainly are right but I had a full-ride opportunity and I turned it down when I dropped out at 17 years old. it took a lot of very hard work to get my business going but I'm only 18 years old and I'm preparing to travel the world. By 20 years old, I will likely be speaking 3 languages and have visited at least three continents. Again, you're right and that for most people they might as well just take advantage of it, except I couldn't wait so long to be successful. Especially when you just sit around and you're bored all day and you just do the nonsense other people tell you to do. If you want to be an entrepreneur comment you have to take control of yourself and delegate your own work. You can only learn running your own business by doing it.

Here’s a discussion we should have. I’m an accountant and I’d say I’m pretty good at it and I’ve done pretty well for myself given my age. Unfortunately, someone wanting to be a CPA must have a college degree. Even though you can buy spend the $2k on the study materials and pass the exam. This isn’t want I’m concerned about though.
So I’m helping my brother with his accounting degree and I was bored one day and asked him to send me a copy of his bill. He is finishing his last year online since it’s cheaper and his bill included fees for campus building usage, other random $40 to $80 fees, and the best one yet is a $100 late fee!! This late fee was assessed 15 days after the start of the semester. Most businesses allow 30 days to pay a bill and even they won’t charge $100 for a late fee. So I emailed the school to ask. They said they can charge up to $300 a semester for late fees. So I asked them why they charge a late fee when a student can’t register for classes for the next semester with a balance due. I’m still waiting for their reply.
So now colleges are charging late fees on top of the thousands of dollars someone has to pay for a semester. He owed $2300 plus late fee. Adding late fees makes it even harder for someone to go to college. It’s sickening.

Pat, I'm pumped, left school recently, was studying design at a community college in KC. Stayed in touch with an instructor and he sent a job to me. Took me 10 hrs and I only made $50 - however, I was more excited about getting paid to learn vs the opposite at school. The commute to school alone came to 30hrs a semester. The youtube videos I took advantage of there covered more in those hrs. than a whole semester at school. Thanks for being a virtual mentor.

Exactly the same what I think.
I want to start my own company but my parents are not supporting me. They are saying that degree is very important but for me it doesn’t make any sense.
Degree is for them who need to run in the same race in which whole world is running.
Degree is for those who need jobs.
I don't want to be a job seeker I want to create jobs. And in my company I don't need anyone to have a degree to work with me.
And people who say in college you learn how to live in this world and you get experience, for those I just want to say one word "bullshit".
If anyone wants to learn how to live in a world just leave your home and same with how to get experience.
My parents don't support me than also I'm not giving up on my dreams.
If you really want to do different and make your dreams come true than you don't need to waste your time in college or getting a degree.
    I totally agree with you.

I had to drop out from my first college due to finances. I was studying music performance and I almost quit music because of it. The percussion "instructor" (if I could even call him that) was terrible and didn't teach me a thing. I take that back... He taught me how to come up with believe-able excuses on why I couldn't attend his lessons. The school also wasn't the place for me to be at. I didn't like the college from the start but I went anyways because I felt pressured by my parents into going. Every thing I did, every class I took, every book I read made me increasingly less emotionally and financially unstable. One upside is that I did make many amazing friends but I just feel that I can grow elsewhere. I do plan on going to another school, Berklee College of Music, even if its for a limited time. I feel that I can learn my craft, stretch myself as a musician, and make lifelong connections there. Thankfully it is a super specialized school where musicians can focus on their craft, become amazing musicians, and network with people from all around the world. College is definitely not for everyone but I definitely feel that given the right environment, thirst for knowledge, and effort can result in amazing things!

Thanks David !!! Valuetainment is , by far...the most informative videos I have ever watched. This video is, by far, the most important for any young person to watch. My daughter is now 15, and soon...she will be coming to that point in her life...to go, or not to go to college. Your argument is spot on. I am a retired veteran finishing my degree and starting my own business at the same time. I also work in the department creating and teaching a field of study that is directly related to my business. As part of the development, I have convinced the "higher ups" that a course in Entrepreneurship is a must have for a person to succeed in this field upon graduating. I have had the privilege of speaking with a Senator who visited my "class" and we spoke of student success in this field. Again....a course in Entrepreneurship will help solidify a person in making something of their degree....instead of accepting a "safe" mediocre job, making someone else rich. Instead of accepting a job outside of their degree field due to the job market being flooded with too many graduates applying to that position. "Give a man a fish...." Entrepreneurship will teach a man (or woman) "to fish".
By the way...Thank you for your service, to this country AND to humanity, with these videos.
    Salute.....

I'm going to college because I want to meet people who have the same mindset and interest while having the freedom and time to learn and work on my goals. I definitely agree that you don't need a college degree to be successful, but not a lot people in my school agree with that, they are uncertain about they life and are going to college just for the degree. They all need to see this video.

I absolutely agree with you Pat, not because I follow you or anything, but because you are dead right on. Im a 24 year old getting my Psychology BA degree and will be doing a one year graduate certificate in Financial Planning. The BA psychology hasn't really taught me a lot but what I'm doing after that will be what I'm passionate about. One thing that my degree has taught me is DISCIPLINE and NEVER GIVING UP. believe it or not, i got kicked out from this program twice but Im naturally a fighter and with that mindset and what i have gone through to be able to finish my degree, its a real discipline. HOWEVER, one thing I would add to your arguments, is TRY DIFFERENT STUFF. I had absolutely no idea that the stock market is my passion (believe me, i have lost and made some good gains but man the experience I have learned is beyond amazing) and i just love it no matter what and that is why I want to help people plan for their future and invest smart. my goal is to have my own firm and company that revolves around this sort of thing. SO one thing I could add, is TRY DIFFERENT STUFF and you will be surprised on what opportunities you will come across that you would have never thought about. this ties in with your argument of traveling the world so yup! excuse the lack of grammar and such but I would like to tell you that I ABSOLUTELY agree with your topic and arguments. P.S I am in Canada and the cost of books and tuition is ridiculous. an average book costs around 100-125 let alone some cost well over 230+... so you do have my support on this Pat. Keep it up and lets shine a lot more on topics that DO MATTER. God bless brother. Let me know what you think about this. Cheers, Adib.

Thank you for sharing these "reality check" thoughts with us... I finally found someone who shares the same advocacy to improve the current education system.. that values integrating specifically, those subjects in real life setting like parenting and preparing younger ones on aiming to be a "prepared lifetime spouse and role model parents for a better world tomorrow". I'm pursuing additional units in teaching now, precisely to pursue that goal in my available capacity as I look forward to take part in the solution I wish to see. I will really appreciate your mentorship and hope we can work hand in hand to make our advocacies a reality in our respective countries. I agree that much can be accomplished when done with a team with a growth and finisher mentality. Thank you for your hard work in making worthwhile videos...truly appreciated!!!! Hope to hear from you soon.- AHA,7/30/2017

My son shared this video with me :-) so thank you for very interesting and well put summary of our education system in general. I'm concur with most of the points that you outlined in this video. I will probably extend the list to why not to drop out of college by additional reason: "Immigration"- If immigration to another country is likely event during the life time, then having degree will help to find new job in new country and make this process of immigration much easier. In addition the army argument for self discipline is applicable just in few specific countries, I know few countries where I will never send my son to the army in.

I think that all of education, not just college, and even our culture needs reform. These ideas for college that you propose should be common place throughout all of life. As for what I would do for education, I would say keep elementary and middle school the same but change high school to be about learning life skills and finding what one loves to do and college should be about honing said love.
