I've talked to many who identify with what I term '"perfectly hidden depression" and this football club has depicted it so tragically and so well. Or I've talked with their widows, grieving parents, or shocked and confused friends. And I teach this to mental health clinicians: the question shouldn't only be, "Do you feel suicidal?" but, "If you were hopeless, if you were thinking about killing yourself, would you tell anyone?" The answer would be "no." And that answer offers a tiny but important clue. Thanks so much to Norwich.

I teach nursing students and our curriculum requires us to push the prioritization of asking patients if they are having suicidal tendencies or thoughts. I really really like how you worded that there and I will be passing that along to my clinical students. I participate in Movember every year and exactly what you said is something that explains the rate of suicide amongst males. Thank you for that and what you do.

As someone with 10+ years of major clinical depression, I can't begin to tell you how accurate this portrayal is.

I had depressions when I was a teenager. I did a lot to get rid of them, it took a lot of effort and therapy. Validation of close people's opinions about me helped me a lot. When I say "validation" means you have to stop toxic traits and self esteem about yourself and paying more attention to what your family or friends say about you. At the end of the day, if they wanna talk or stay at your side, it means you are more worthy than you think.

Many teenagers who describe themselves as depressed are often experiencing intense sadness, frustration, or situational stress rather than clinical depression. True depression is a persistent and pervasive mental health condition, distinct from temporary emotional reactions. What they are experiencing may stem from a lack of coping mechanisms, a need for emotional support, or identity struggles. Mislabeling these feelings as depression can diminish the understanding of the real condition and the importance of addressing it appropriately.

It was up to you whether you had depression or not. I tried in vain to explain to him that it was a potentially fatal illness, like many others. For him it always remains the same: If you have depression, it's your own fault! But we sufferers are already full to the brim with guilt!

So moving and powerful! Everyone needs to see this! Thank you Norwich FC for producing this!
Especially with men in the UK, we are so still instilled with the "Stiff upper lip", "grin and bear it", "man up" and "grow a pair" attitudes, that we don't talk to someone until it's too late.

Hey brother, I can sympathize with your post. For the longest time, I did what I could to make sure the people around me had a listening ear or a reason to smile. I was the one people came to for advice or a smile. Inside, sometimes I felt great, mostly I felt like a joy imposter because that’s not how I felt.
I keep asking myself what’s the point of having to buy a house, take a job I don’t like because of needing money and on and on. What I’ve come to realize is what I keep asking myself is, what’s the point of me? Like you, I maintain by looking to future possibilities - hope. Intellectual reasons like, people around you love you, you matter to your community (I’ve done a lot of community organizing over the years), you’ll hurt the people around you if you go, etc. are good but it’s how I FEEL that’s the issue. I’m a smart guy and know these things but being smart doesn’t “fix” my feelings. I’ve started opening up to some people who are close to me about some of my “darker” feelings. It’s so not easy but it’s something I am doing, using resources outside of myself, because I’m hopeful I’ll start feeling I have a point to myself. Big virtual hugs. B

I had my suspicions, and tried to show all the love I could for him in the end, hoping I could heal whatever he wasn’t telling me about.. But his wounds weren’t mine to heal, and he lost his fight. This really hits home, as my dad always sang the loudest and roared the highest at our last match together. It’s always the brightest stars that hides the biggest shadows. Robbin Williams was one of the kindest loving actors that comes around once in a generation. Nobody knew he was struggling with severe depression because he hid it so well. Depression affects us all differently. I personally can’t remember a time when I was genuinely happy and don’t look forward to anything in life at this point. People just think it’s part of my personality that I’m just defaultly stoic and quiet all the time. People always associate depression with staying home locking yourself away from people and having no connections but it goes much deeper than just that.

This video gave me goosebumps and cry. Almost a year ago to the day I was this man, happy on the outside and depressed inside, I was found in bed in tears just not knowing how to explain how I felt or even why I felt it, but everything felt hollow.
This video is so important and so is the talk around it. If you’re struggling, please try and talk to someone, anyone. It will be hard, you will struggle to find the words and you’ll probably even try to convince yourself that what you’re saying/feeling is wrong, but it’s okay. People who love you, will still love you even when you’re struggling.
One year later and I’m in such a better place, I’m even able to help people who have depression because I now understand so much more about it. It’s a battle but one that is so worth coming out the other side, so good luck to you, you can do it.

Depression cuts off any love for people or for yourself, it’s an inner torment where your mind turns against you. Life is joyless, you lose your sense of humour, you feel agitated, you may have bad insomnia too. You can lose your appetite and lie in bed all day feeling agitated but knowing that getting up doesn’t solve things.
The days feel endless and when you wake at 4 am you panic knowing you have another long day to get through. You can feel terrified and that you may have to go up to hospital even if you’ve been in hospital before because the panic at how desperate you feel sets in and you don’t know what else to do. Years ago I worked for an insurance company in the city (not Aviva), I was in my late 20's and worked with a guy called Kev, he was a bit younger than me.
He was well into his music, he had DJ'd up north and had built up a small following here too.
Bad stuff happened in Kev's life but he always went out of his way to talk to people and put others first.
Kev ended up in a bad situation and took his own life. He walked out of work one day, but before he did, he turned to me, gave half a smile and waved. I waved back...
A few days later we found out he'd passed away. He only worked with us for about 3 months and I didn't know him outside of work beyond his music and some of his unfortunatel issues he'd mentioned..
I think about him sometimes, even now, 15 years later. I hope he found his peace.

Ending is good as far as telling people how to get help... but there are those that others won't listen to.

I lost my brother the way that this video tries to warn us about. My big brother. Ten years, ten days and I think nearly 10 hours older, but I could've made that last part up when I was younger because I look up to him so much.
It was the week of his 52nd birthday and he lived the next town away. That week, someone told me they were concerned about him and to check in, but it sounded like his ill, that's all.
So I messaged him, and got short replies. When I told him i felt something was wrong, he asked why would I think that, so u said no reason, just hope he's OK. I wasn't get much out of him, but we agreed me and my girlfriend at the time would visit him in Saturday, 21st Jan, his birthday.
I messaged him a few times on Friday night and he didn't read them, so I called and still no reply.
I arranged a welfare check with his local police and they said that although there was no answer when they knocked, not to be concerned.
The next day I drove up to his, as we arranged and his work van was out front, which he used to go anywhere. Its obvious it hadn't moved for a few days. Leaving my partner in the car, I went to Paul's door and immediately saw the lock had been busted, so I knocked and knocked on the doors and windows.... no reply.
It was only when I asked the neighbour and saw her face in silence, that I knew what happened. She said nothing, didn't need to, it was all over her body laguage. I said 'hes dead, isnt he? And her continued silence while looking straight into my eyes confirmed it.
The police found Paul shortly after I last spoke to them, and contacted my local police to tell me, but the message got lost, hence how we found out this way.
I rejoined Facebook to invite our friends and family to his funeral because I paused my account sometime before. When I looked at Paul's page, he was selling anything he could in the month leading up to his passing, which I'm told is a common thing with those who choose they can't go on.
To anyone who gets a heads up on such things, take it seriously. Look for the hints and the change in language, especially about the future. That week I messaged to ask what he's doing for his birthday, he replied saying 'nothing really, it's just another day closer to death'
I thought it was a joke.
The signs aren't easy to spot, so always, always take the safer option and go see your loved one. Get eyes on and make a judgment
I hope this helps a loved one to help thier loved one ❤

Thank you for producing this. As someone struggling with depression, content like this helps me to get in touch with my emotions sometimes. I have been to therapy, but the real work is still ahead of me.

The first time I sae this…I completely missed the mark. I paid attention to the wrong one. After the end, I gave it a second look and realized just how many signs he was putting out there, for those to be missed.
This commercial broke me because it’s always the ones who we least expect. This should serve as a reminder for us all to check in and be checked on.

One of the best shorts (and look, I've said shorts, not ads) I've ever watched. That's what I do for a living, writing commercials and videos and contents, and sometimes I struggle thinking about how much I do not care about what I do, and how little is the impact of the things that I do and write. Then, once every couple of years, I stumble in things like this, and I remember why I've started back then. Using these tools to do something with a huge impact like this, something that actually matters, is the very sense of copywriting. I hope one day I'll be proudly signing something this beautiful. Great job for a very sensitive yet fundamental theme.

I don't even know what to say, it was like watching myself in this video, it made me feel that I'm not alone. I just want to say that after living with depression for almost 9 years I finally am in my last month of therapy. Thank you for spreading the message, and if by any chance you read this and you're struggling, I encourage you to look for help, I am sure that if I could do it you can do it too!!
