I've talked to many who identify with what I term '"perfectly hidden depression" and this football club has depicted it so tragically and so well. Or I've talked with their widows, grieving parents, or shocked and confused friends. And I teach this to mental health clinicians: the question shouldn't only be, "Do you feel suicidal?" but, "If you were hopeless, if you were thinking about killing yourself, would you tell anyone?" The answer would be "no." And that answer offers a tiny but important clue. Thanks so much to Norwich.
I teach nursing students and our curriculum requires us to push the prioritization of asking patients if they are having suicidal tendencies or thoughts. I really really like how you worded that there and I will be passing that along to my clinical students. I participate in Movember every year and exactly what you said is something that explains the rate of suicide amongst males. Thank you for that and what you do.
I call it being a "Functioning Depressive". This really is an accurate picture of someone with depression, l hid mine for many many years and no one suspected anything.
That hit home for me as well. I talked myself out of it to go to a football match last fall and my supporter family took me into their arms as I fought for my life and I won!
@@jasonwyrick3413 I finally found out it DOES get better. If someone is going through the same, keep good habits, even though you don't feel like, I swear the clouds will go away and it will be sunny again!
The subtle hints of him projecting questions, asking him how he has been, so that maybe he can be asked how he is doing. But also giving his belongings to him before he left, really makes it more emotional and true. Great message to everyone about mental health.
yeah I only noticed that the second time watching it and it's genuinely startling how obvious those things seem in hindsight, whilst being so easy to miss at the same time. a beautiful representation of how differently depression can present, and how that whole "it's never the ones you'd expect" thing has some truth to it
Wow, I learned this in nursing school, and didn’t even pick up on those subtle points in the video. You’re absolutely right! The unexpected resonated with many people including myself.
My brother committed suicide 3 months ago I found him and I never saw it coming. We are American football fans and for the first time in 25 years I went to the home opener without him. All the fans around us noticed that he was not there as my grandpa has had those seats for almost 60 years. We laid down my brothers Steelers jersey and everybody knew. They all gave their apologies.
How is it that despite billions of pounds of taxpayer money, our government can’t produce something as authentic and meaningful as this. Incredible message, Norwich. Thank you and well done.
The first time you watch it, the ending blindsides you. If you watch it a second time, you see all the hints; him constantly asking how life has been for his buddy to ask the same, him stating "well, I hope things are better outside of the football," and him finally leaving behind his prized possessions with his friend. Powerful storytelling.
Adding on to this I feel the video conveys that his friend was unaware of his other friend’s personal life and never really made an effort to check, not because he didn’t care but more so because he never understood the context behind his other friend’s gestures or actions. All that other friend wanted was to be happy :/
@@sanjefffI think the quiet guy was struggling too(he just showed it). It’s hard to be super inquisitive and caring into other people’s lives when you yourself are visibly being bogged down by the demons you’re facing
Also at the end of the last game they watch when the guy on the right says “wow that was worth it” he probably already made up his mind to commit suicide but decided to wait to see if Norwich would win more game before he did the deed.Norwich winning gave him the peace of mind to go through with what he did(also giving his friend the scarf)
As someone with 10+ years of major clinical depression, I can't begin to tell you how accurate this portrayal is. Most people legitimately can't tell that you're miserable, and you don't want to bother them with it. Especially when you've made bad experiences with trying that.
I had depressions when I was a teenager. I did a lot to get rid of them, it took a lot of effort and therapy. Validation of close people's opinions about me helped me a lot. When I say "validation" means you have to stop toxic traits and self esteem about yourself and paying more attention to what your family or friends say about you. At the end of the day, if they wanna talk or stay at your side, it means you are more worthy than you think.
Many teenagers who describe themselves as depressed are often experiencing intense sadness, frustration, or situational stress rather than clinical depression. True depression is a persistent and pervasive mental health condition, distinct from temporary emotional reactions. What they are experiencing may stem from a lack of coping mechanisms, a need for emotional support, or identity struggles. Mislabeling these feelings as depression can diminish the understanding of the real condition and the importance of addressing it appropriately.
This is so true. I always have a really hard time telling therapists when I am really struggling because when I was a teenager and did that a (in hindsight terrible) therapist wanted to have me committed and taken out of school.
Same here. Never easily moved to crying but they did their job in making this video, powerful and poignant. They got you attached to the 2 people on screen really well. Then when it's ending 😭.
Notice the one who struggles with reality/depression is the one who engulfs himself in the fantasy world of sports more so than any of the other fans. That was his escape. Sports are powerful, but not as powerful as the message this video delivers. Well done!
This happens not just with sports though, same for video games or actually any other hobby, its somehow when you really feel bad you try to do the thing you liked or were good at.
It is ok to have a healthy distraction or hobby but when it is like addiction and you live totally through it and cannot do without it can be used as a mask
This video absolutely Floored me. I thought it was just going to be some cheesey video but now I’m thinking about it days later and calling all my friends.
@@yoyo2598 call all of them, and tell them the meaning they have for you. I have a friend that tell me that all the time and make me feel better when I think in this fake door
I am one of the funny, always positive guys. I was diagnosed with depression and am struggling with it. Not even my wife noticed until I opened up. There are people who care and will help you. Take the first step, you have nothing to lose. As a friend, ask how someone is doing. Your gut feeling is often there for a reason. Small actions can have huge impacts.
Ive taken that step several times n ive had enough. There r a lot of ppl out there, family included, that r just faking the funk. They dont really want to know what ur going through. They just want to pretend that everything is okay so they dont have to address anything that doesnt involve them. I love ur outlook n can appreciate that things worked out fer u... @@fleamcbaggins3087 it's when you reach out via text etc and make the effort and they don't respond and when it's too late you always hear them say why didn't they tell us what they were going through
yeah the first time you just see 2 men and one not that much emotional, but the second you can notice that the sad is getting better just before his friend go away
Cried like a baby to this. My mother constantly worries about me. I tell her everytime. "Mom i tell you my sadness as it comes. You need to worry about the ones that are smiling." im already bent and bruised, im flexible and move with the pain because ive dealt with it for a decade. But those that smile and ignore it because they cant process it are the ones we need to protect because if you dont bend you WILL break.
"Mom i tell you my sadness as it comes. You need to worry about the ones that are smiling." such an insightful comment. Well done you for being honest and open. That's the safety valve for life. Wishing you all the very best
Depression is like any other illness and it should be treated before it kills you. People should not feel embarrassed to share with their loved ones that they are in depression and if loved one indicates he’s in depression take it seriously and act on it. We all are in this together so let’s help each other
As a lifelong sufferer - don't be so sure that by opening up things get better, you quickly find out who's got your back, which is often very very few, and who doesn't which may come often as a shock. Those who don't understand depression will sound like ppl from the middle ages - all kinds of notions and silly ideas about you start to emerge. Best of luck.
When I told my father (84) about my severe depression in the summer, he just said he had never had "anything like that". He put it down to his way of life and his beliefs. It was up to you whether you had depression or not. I tried in vain to explain to him that it was a potentially fatal illness, like many others. For him it always remains the same: If you have depression, it's your own fault! But we sufferers are already full to the brim with guilt!
As with real life, it's the second watch that hits hardest...when you realise there were signs there...the fact he was trying to communicate...and then the way he gave away his scarf...the "Nah, you keep it mate" and the shoulder hug was his way of saying goodbye, followed up with the "That was worth it", like he was hanging on for one good game, like it was his "Shampoo and Conditioner" moment. So moving and powerful! Everyone needs to see this! Thank you Norwich FC for producing this! Especially with men in the UK, we are so still instilled with the "Stiff upper lip", "grin and bear it", "man up" and "grow a pair" attitudes, that we don't talk to someone until it's too late. Talk to people...make sure they are doing ok...it can make all the difference, even when they seem ok 😢
For me what really broke my heart was him saying "I hope things are better outside of football" which was a clear "I'm feeling horrible, I hope at least you don't feel the same way" it was both a sign that he cared a lot about his friend but also a cry for help
People say it’s different for women but not in my experience. Most women I know myself included can’t tell anyone how they’re feeling when it’s actually serious like depression. I’ve only been able to tell a select couple way after, once I’m feeling better and more “together” again. I think depression by its very nature often hides.
I am the guy on the right of video. This video made me cry like baby everytime I watched it. They are really spot on qith this ad and earned a norwich fan. I try to be happy outside but I am broken inside. When I say "how are you?" I expect someone to ask me same in return. I say positive things hoping everything will be alright. It just HOPE that keeps me going. Giving away your things is also sign of leaving the world. This type of video should be displayed in every corner of the world. Absolute masterpiece!
Hey brother, I can sympathize with your post. For the longest time, I did what I could to make sure the people around me had a listening ear or a reason to smile. I was the one people came to for advice or a smile. Inside, sometimes I felt great, mostly I felt like a joy imposter because that’s not how I felt. I keep asking myself what’s the point of having to buy a house, take a job I don’t like because of needing money and on and on. What I’ve come to realize is what I keep asking myself is, what’s the point of me? Like you, I maintain by looking to future possibilities - hope. Intellectual reasons like, people around you love you, you matter to your community (I’ve done a lot of community organizing over the years), you’ll hurt the people around you if you go, etc. are good but it’s how I FEEL that’s the issue. I’m a smart guy and know these things but being smart doesn’t “fix” my feelings. I’ve started opening up to some people who are close to me about some of my “darker” feelings. It’s so not easy but it’s something I am doing, using resources outside of myself, because I’m hopeful I’ll start feeling I have a point to myself. Big virtual hugs. B
I was 17 years of age when my father lost his battle.. We were both kopites, as he passed his passion down to me from a early age.. Not a day goes by without me missing him, especially singing YNWA with him at kickoff on gameday.. The one thing he always wore all the way until the end was his smile and his empathy.. I had my suspicions, and tried to show all the love I could for him in the end, hoping I could heal whatever he wasn’t telling me about.. But his wounds weren’t mine to heal, and he lost his fight. This really hits home, as my dad always sang the loudest and roared the highest at our last match together. It’s always the brightest stars that hides the biggest shadows. To everyone sitting alone with their dark thoughts.. I love you, and so do so many others.. Please reach out, and I can ensure no matter our intrests, differences.. Then we’ll make sure you’ll never walk alone!❤️
My dad and I have been season ticket holders at Norwich for 20 years. Sadly he passed away in Oct from a brain tumour. The prospect of going to the football without him has been hard. All the Norwich fans around me have been great and I don’t feel alone. Thanks to them, Norwich for the mental health awareness and RIP dad.
I am so sorry for your loss Stuart. I lost my dad in 2017, we used to go to the stadium to follow Corinthians here in Brazil or even watching at home like all the time. It is not the same without him but my brothers and I kept the tradition and now my young 5 year old boy is also part of it. I like to think that in a way or another he is with us.❤ I hope you and your family are ok. Cheers from Brazil !🙏

Nobody did, nobody believed me. “ that’s not what depression looks like.” “ girl you’re not depressed. I literally cry all the time.” “ my mom is depressed. You’re not.” I heard it all. I slowly became a miserable monster version of myself. That pretty happy girl is gone. I’ve tried to commit twice and was in the psych ward last year. I’m really struggling. I really don’t wanna be here anymore.
Robbin Williams was one of the kindest loving actors that comes around once in a generation. Nobody knew he was struggling with severe depression because he hid it so well. Depression affects us all differently. I personally can’t remember a time when I was genuinely happy and don’t look forward to anything in life at this point. People just think it’s part of my personality that I’m just defaultly stoic and quiet all the time. People always associate depression with staying home locking yourself away from people and having no connections but it goes much deeper than just that.
An F.C… it took an F.C to make what has to be one of the most powerful mental health videos I have ever seen. There is a reason it’s been viewed so many times, cause it hits the nail on the head. An F.C did this, not a gov or a college… an F.C… thank you Norwich. From all of us.
This video gave me goosebumps and cry. Almost a year ago to the day I was this man, happy on the outside and depressed inside, I was found in bed in tears just not knowing how to explain how I felt or even why I felt it, but everything felt hollow. This video is so important and so is the talk around it. If you’re struggling, please try and talk to someone, anyone. It will be hard, you will struggle to find the words and you’ll probably even try to convince yourself that what you’re saying/feeling is wrong, but it’s okay. People who love you, will still love you even when you’re struggling. One year later and I’m in such a better place, I’m even able to help people who have depression because I now understand so much more about it. It’s a battle but one that is so worth coming out the other side, so good luck to you, you can do it.
Well done for fighting through and also using your experience to help others. I had my own battle like this from 2019-2021, but films like this bring back the memories clear as day.
Thanks Norwich. I travelled to work with Harry for 20 years. He loved a laugh, he loved a drink and he was a massive Leeds fan. In December 2019 he took his own life. He was the last bloke id have ever thought of doing that. You can never tell. RIp my old mate.

@emmanuelochi212 neither men nor women like to see a man that's too emotional. We keep it all to ourselves. Luckily I'm very cold and rational, the 'expected' mindset of a man. But if some day a depression or a wave of big problems come, I'll probably try to fight it alone and if I lose....
Everytime I see this it gets more sad. I'm the guy on the right, most happy one in the room the most optimistic guy you'd ever meet and I'm very energetic too. But I often wonder if I'm the saddest person in the room. I've been broken 💔 so many times and most recently was diagnosed with a cancer of the blood. I've never wanted to harm myself yet I'm not afraid of death either. I'm dying inside yet living outside...😢 I wish the best for you all, stay optimistic that's at least how I hold it together
i'd say if you can afford it, take time off your job or quit entirely and spend some of your money. Go on vacation, start doing your bucket list. Don't spend all of it, keep enough for the treatment and a more frugal retirement, but focus on enjoying yourself and filling out your bucket list, you never know how bad the disease might be at this point i really hope you caught it early...
I saw this on Instagram..ni cried my tears out. Coz that was me, the guy who was cheering on people but dying everyday inside. Im just trying to hold it all together
Norwich, you may not be an elite level club with loads of trophies, but you did what Real, United, Liverpool, Bayern or even Barça never had the guts to do, to do something beyond football, and that makes you an even more astounding and special club in my eyes. Respect from an Arsenal fan thousands of miles away ❤️💛

Wow.. still a little speechless from this video. I have lost my sweet twin brother last year at age 28. He appeared to have been struggling with a depression for maybe 10 years. We did not know, and he did not find help. He only started to open up to me in his final weeks, but I was unable to notice the depth of his issues and help the person I thought I new best for 28 years of my life. Please check in with the ones you love ❤🙏
All original football fans cried with this video. Have solidarity lads. Even the mate next to our seat has a need for love and interest. Greets from Greece.
Depression cuts off any love for people or for yourself, it’s an inner torment where your mind turns against you. Life is joyless, you lose your sense of humour, you feel agitated, you may have bad insomnia too. You can lose your appetite and lie in bed all day feeling agitated but knowing that getting up doesn’t solve things. The days feel endless and when you wake at 4 am you panic knowing you have another long day to get through. You can feel terrified and that you may have to go up to hospital even if you’ve been in hospital before because the panic at how desperate you feel sets in and you don’t know what else to do. Feeling sui cidal is terrifying
I have been a Norwich supporter for over 10 years, cheering from Japan. And I have mental health problems. I am truly proud that Norwich's video message has impressed so many people, transcending sports and nationalities. When I saw this video for the first time, I couldn't stop crying. Please understand that everyone has their own hardships, and some people cannot express it well. And if you can, please be considerate of next to you. There are no words that can completely cure mental health, but there are always people who can be helped by just one word of your voice. I apologize for my bad English.
Thank you for sharing this. Never stop reaching out if you need support. Your English is perfect by the way! Hope to see you at Carrow Road sometime! 🔰 OTBC
Something that i'm not sure people spotted is the change in jersey from the usual yellow one to the purple one. If i'm not wrong, that one is the 'sudden change in appearance' symptom. This video is incredible in the way it showcases all the signs a person is struggling. A sudden change in appearance and giving away possessions are well documented signs. I'm not really a football guy, but to the people who made this possible, hats off.

Years ago I worked for an insurance company in the city (not Aviva), I was in my late 20's and worked with a guy called Kev, he was a bit younger than me. He was well into his music, he had DJ'd up north and had built up a small following here too. Bad stuff happened in Kev's life but he always went out of his way to talk to people and put others first. Kev ended up in a bad situation and took his own life. He walked out of work one day, but before he did, he turned to me, gave half a smile and waved. I waved back... A few days later we found out he'd passed away. He only worked with us for about 3 months and I didn't know him outside of work beyond his music and some of his unfortunatel issues he'd mentioned.. I think about him sometimes, even now, 15 years later. I hope he found his peace.

I lost my brother the way that this video tries to warn us about. My big brother. Ten years, ten days and I think nearly 10 hours older, but I could've made that last part up when I was younger because I look up to him so much. It was the week of his 52nd birthday and he lived the next town away. That week, someone told me they were concerned about him and to check in, but it sounded like his ill, that's all. So I messaged him, and got short replies. When I told him i felt something was wrong, he asked why would I think that, so u said no reason, just hope he's OK. I wasn't get much out of him, but we agreed me and my girlfriend at the time would visit him in Saturday, 21st Jan, his birthday. I messaged him a few times on Friday night and he didn't read them, so I called and still no reply. I arranged a welfare check with his local police and they said that although there was no answer when they knocked, not to be concerned. The next day I drove up to his, as we arranged and his work van was out front, which he used to go anywhere. Its obvious it hadn't moved for a few days. Leaving my partner in the car, I went to Paul's door and immediately saw the lock had been busted, so I knocked and knocked on the doors and windows.... no reply. It was only when I asked the neighbour and saw her face in silence, that I knew what happened. She said nothing, didn't need to, it was all over her body laguage. I said 'hes dead, isnt he? And her continued silence while looking straight into my eyes confirmed it. The police found Paul shortly after I last spoke to them, and contacted my local police to tell me, but the message got lost, hence how we found out this way. I rejoined Facebook to invite our friends and family to his funeral because I paused my account sometime before. When I looked at Paul's page, he was selling anything he could in the month leading up to his passing, which I'm told is a common thing with those who choose they can't go on. To anyone who gets a heads up on such things, take it seriously. Look for the hints and the change in language, especially about the future. That week I messaged to ask what he's doing for his birthday, he replied saying 'nothing really, it's just another day closer to death' I thought it was a joke. The signs aren't easy to spot, so always, always take the safer option and go see your loved one. Get eyes on and make a judgment I hope this helps a loved one to help thier loved one ❤
Thank you for producing this. As someone struggling with depression, content like this helps me to get in touch with my emotions sometimes. I have been to therapy, but the real work is still ahead of me.
The first time I sae this…I completely missed the mark. I paid attention to the wrong one. After the end, I gave it a second look and realized just how many signs he was putting out there, for those to be missed. This commercial broke me because it’s always the ones who we least expect. This should serve as a reminder for us all to check in and be checked on.
One of the best shorts (and look, I've said shorts, not ads) I've ever watched. That's what I do for a living, writing commercials and videos and contents, and sometimes I struggle thinking about how much I do not care about what I do, and how little is the impact of the things that I do and write. Then, once every couple of years, I stumble in things like this, and I remember why I've started back then. Using these tools to do something with a huge impact like this, something that actually matters, is the very sense of copywriting. I hope one day I'll be proudly signing something this beautiful. Great job for a very sensitive yet fundamental theme.

Friend should have asked the same in return
Yes!
Not even a Norwich fan but this made me gain so much respect for the club
i know, i am mufc fan.
Agree
You really had to say you weren’t a fan? WTH dude
I never heard of this FC and I respect them now
Is this even real? Genuinely asking. I like the message but doubting the authentication
This needs to be seen by so many
So proud of our football club and this message.
Congratulations, you can be proud ;) greetings from Poland.

Greetings from Florence, Italy. 💜
Very proud today of our football club.
Once a yellow… 💛
We’ll said , and well done Norwich City FC , wasn’t expecting that ending and really brings home a message.
@@LautaroTessi Nobody wants to talk to me or stay at my side, even my family treats me with minimal attention.
@clintonevans2226 TEN PLUS YEARS OF MAJOR CLINICAL DEPRESSION.
Don't you dare understate what I've been through!
This is so true. I always have a really hard time telling therapists when I am really struggling because when I was a teenager and did that a (in hindsight terrible) therapist wanted to have me committed and taken out of school.
I am not easily moved and usually people think i lack emotion , but this video when it ended made me cry like a baby. I guess it hit a sweet spot.
Same
My god
Same.
same ...

Not everyone has the same support system
good luck bro we love you

Such a powerful video, hit me even harder the second time I watched it 💛💚💛
I love you Tommy t, such a kind heart❤
yeah the first time you just see 2 men and one not that much emotional, but the second you can notice that the sad is getting better just before his friend go away
Me too. I literally teared up 😞
This is the best mental health ad I have ever seen in my entire life.
Well said.
We all are in this together so let’s help each other
Powerful message needs to be shown everywhere
As a lifelong sufferer - don't be so sure that by opening up things get better, you quickly find out who's got your back, which is often very very few, and who doesn't which may come often as a shock. Those who don't understand depression will sound like ppl from the middle ages - all kinds of notions and silly ideas about you start to emerge. Best of luck.
Yes, even some people might try to take advantage of the situation but I think that you should seek help with some profesionals.
Well said mate - spot on! 👏🙏
Also, the fact that the guy on the left seems as if he wouldn't care, but in the end is visibly mourning the loss of his friend.
For me what really broke my heart was him saying "I hope things are better outside of football" which was a clear "I'm feeling horrible, I hope at least you don't feel the same way" it was both a sign that he cared a lot about his friend but also a cry for help
Not just in the UK mate, it's the same here across the pond.
How you been man?
@@LBR_Bounty I am good man. Thanks for your concern. People like you make this world a happy place.
I hope you’re doing well brother 👊
Hey buddy. I care and I hope you're having a good day. Reach out if you need anything. I fight the battle too.
Thank you for sharing, and my condolences

Robbin Williams was one of the kindest loving actors that comes around once in a generation. Nobody knew he was struggling with severe depression because he hid it so well. Depression affects us all differently. I personally can’t remember a time when I was genuinely happy and don’t look forward to anything in life at this point. People just think it’s part of my personality that I’m just defaultly stoic and quiet all the time. People always associate depression with staying home locking yourself away from people and having no connections but it goes much deeper than just that.
Sometimes the people close to you ask how you are because they need you to ask them back.
yeah...yeah they do. ....just now and then would be enough. don't need to really even care....just ask. Please ask.
An F.C… it took an F.C to make what has to be one of the most powerful mental health videos I have ever seen. There is a reason it’s been viewed so many times, cause it hits the nail on the head. An F.C did this, not a gov or a college… an F.C… thank you Norwich. From all of us.
The big difference is one cares about fixing serious issues and one doesn’t. Take a wild guess which is which…
I always cry whenever this ad is shared in any platform

It is a societal norm; men are not allowed to cry; men cannot feel pain, etc. Now we know the reality

Something that i'm not sure people spotted is the change in jersey from the usual yellow one to the purple one. If i'm not wrong, that one is the 'sudden change in appearance' symptom.

That week I messaged to ask what he's doing for his birthday, he replied saying 'nothing really, it's just another day closer to death'
I thought it was a joke.
The signs aren't easy to spot, so always, always take the safer option and go see your loved one. Get eyes on and make a judgment
I hope this helps a loved one to help thier loved one ❤
Still one of the best videos I've ever seen
I'm cuban and I'm also a proud Norwich fan.
Love you mates💛💚
Man united fan here, cheers to you Norwich, you brought me to tears
Thank you for producing this. As someone struggling with depression, content like this helps me to get in touch with my emotions sometimes. I have been to therapy, but the real work is still ahead of me.
RIP Seamus, you still live rent free in my head, buddy. ❤️
Norwich City you have a new fan from Portugal. Thank you for this ❤️
@TalkNorwichCity - wow this NCFC world mental health video is 1 year old today. OTBC! 🔰💛💚
This is incredible. I hope as many people see this as needs to. Well done Norwich.
Well said, but I guess we can all make a difference, no matter what profession we re in. Too bad we often forget it.
Whoever came up with this advert is literally a genius.
This video gave me goosebumps. Such a powerful, moving message around mental health. It really hit home. The most important video I have watched on social media.
Yooo wassup
Ay, Nathan sup, he watched a Norwich video- yahoo!
I don't even know what to say, it was like watching myself in this video, it made me feel that I'm not alone. I just want to say that after living with depression for almost 9 years I finally am in my last month of therapy. Thank you for spreading the message, and if by any chance you read this and you're struggling, I encourage you to look for help, I am sure that if I could do it you can do it too!!
but what if there is no help that can do it? what then?
