My personal take is to have a base with sand, get a watery amount of desert yellow, then spatter on a brighter yellow and a light brown mix of the desert yellow, when this dries it creates cracks on the surface. BTW you've improved alot on videos Jay.
Very good, easy and effective desert base tutorial. I've tried with several brown colors, but my bases doesn't look that good like yours. What colors have you used?
Anybody know of a larger scale version of this technique? I've seen different "crackle" mediums, but I'm talking on the scale of a 4x6 table, for a scorched earth style map I've been working on. I want a solid 60% to be crackled and I'm not keen on buying that much crackle medium if there is a way to make something similar myself...
Could you link a picture of the product you used? the gloss paint and the crackle paint? ive tried a few different ones and none turn out that number of cracks T-T, i did like the Golden crackle paste, but it was more of a thick dried muddy riverbed than a flat dry desert dirt.
probably, we have another video, (how to create an ice base) but instead paint the base red or orange then apply the crackle paint on top, i believe that the brand i use, Viva color produces a black crackle, it would not be practical to use the white paint then paint it black
Do you skip repainting the skirt of the base for time sake? Bases usually look more complete with the black band and was wondering why you sometimes choose to not paint it black
i want to do a base like this by my own... but in Germany i dont Know what yor cracking paint is... i found something, but that imitates only old paint.. anyone knows wehre i can get more or less THIS product ?!
That's weird. 'Cause I'm holding a container of the stuff in my hand as I type this, and the labels are all in German (and I am fair convinced that it shipped FROM Germany). Look for the Viva Decor brand Crackling Colour/color. You should be able to find it on Amazon if you can't find it in a brick-and-mortar shop.
+E-4 Airman Cut two pices of thin wire and drill holes under each foot. Glue the wire into the legs but make sure that they stay a little out. Now paint there tips of the wire, place it on the finished base so they will mark the place where you need the opposit wholes on the base. Drill those marks, glue the figure on the base and blend the wire on the outlooking part on the downside of the base. Yeah it´s a little work, but now you can throw the figure on your enemies head if you like ^^
task force pinoy From going there myself I can tell you that they don't carry it, at least not around where I live. It seems JoAnns and Walmart does though.
Have you tried the Agrellan Earth from Games Workshop. I use it on some of my models for ice fields and it seems pretty good, main reason is I can't get any crackle paint where I am (everywhere is about 2+ hours away and can't be bothered ordering).
Loved everything about this video until we get to the end and you didn't bother to clean up the rim. Its like going to a five star restaurant that leaves gravy thumbprints on the plate.
Argellan Earth is like x5 the price of using Viva Decor and it's also only good if you want brown, or you can mix nuln oil and black to make it back by dabbing it on top when it's half dry. Viva Colour is awesome. You can mix it and make whatever color crackle paint you want very easy and very cheap.
Damn you've changed and grown so much since this video!
just watched this video, and yes, the quality of the video's has been such a journey!
Old intro is jarring after watching your newer content for so long.
I saw them, the 2 dogs at the beginning :D
Great tutorial by the way.
Would a model just be glued directly to this? Or should I leave an empty space without the crackle paint for where the model will be glued?
What do you use as the crackle base medium?
Vallejo Crackle Medium more than likely.
My personal take is to have a base with sand, get a watery amount of desert yellow, then spatter on a brighter yellow and a light brown mix of the desert yellow, when this dries it creates cracks on the surface.

Excellent tutorial, right to the point. Thanks
Very good, easy and effective desert base tutorial. I've tried with several brown colors, but my bases doesn't look that good like yours. What colors have you used?
Really nice effect on this base, well done
hi ,awesome job,
can you wright please all colours which you used ?

Very Helpful I am using crackle on some Tyranids to give them more of a turtle look on their Carapace.
Nice base
And what do you use to attach minis to your bases? Plastic glue? Super glue?
nice effect on the base. going to try

Now there is a crackle texture paint for this effect, much has changed in 10 years.
awesome, straightforward tutorial. going to use this on some necron warriors. thanks!
Literally doing this now for my lychguard!
Nice work. You keep beating me to all these tutorials haha
What crackle medium is this?
And what do you się to attach a miniature to the bases you make? Standard plastic glue? Super glue?
What do you use in the minuto 0:46?
And when it's all done you can super glue small tufts on to act as shrubbery.
Do you pin or just glue minis ?
Nice work. Would it be also possible to use it for laval - based base?

Dude did u mix the crackle paint and your white color?
No joke, seen a few of your vids now. Your shit is on point man. Excellent job.
Question: I’m in the process of making volcanic scatter terrain, and wanted to know if the crackle paint could work on top of cork
Very nice
Spicy brown is my new favourite name for mustard colored things
What are you using in the video because I can’t understand what you are saying
Do you skip repainting the skirt of the base for time sake? Bases usually look more complete with the black band and was wondering why you sometimes choose to not paint it black
Time and also not everyone paints it black sometimes people paint it other colors to match their color scheme.
yah we do that also because manny people choose to paint the skirt a different color to accent the highlighted colors of the models.
I just noticed that the rim is rarely painted in any videos, black or otherwise. It's a shame because the bases feel unfinished without that detail
Neat idea, to use a pin to remove some parts! Thanks for sharing.
I like that now there is a colour that does all of this with one paint.
Still need to get the shadows in and the highlights with drybrush. But Agrellan Earth does let u skip few steps :)
Awesome...been trying to figure a scorched earth/wasteland for my AoS Beastmen..this'll work perfectly!
Looks good thanks for the tutorial
the black base u use at the early video, i like to know the brand name of that base. thx
Just standard bases that come with 40k figures I imagine
looking good!

What is about the rim of the base?!
Nice effect for a dry river bed.
Spicy Brown: Jay's rapper name.
You mention gloss paint here, what is it? I'v never heard of it. Is that from Michaels as well?
Gloss Varnish my dude.
Hey man, what's that crackle paint? Is it a different brand of agrellan earth that games workshop do? Is it cheaper or anything?
Cheers
It's paint that fucking cracks you idiot
Can you share the specific colors you used for the painting of the base please? I'm wanting to try this effect out on a few minis.
+Mike Taghon Yes, I want to know that, too.
What paints do you use for models?
Games Workshop paints. And we're slowly switching to Vallejo.
+EonsOfBattle As do I. Try the flesh paints from Panzer Aces. You need to mix em, but they are the best flesh colors so far.
What is the stuff called which prduces the cracks and all that? I can't understand what you are saying and I need to translate it to my langauge.
crackle paint
is this crakle paint cheaper than Citadel's textures?
xiwi just looked online, its way more expensive than the Citadel texture paints
Except you get like 20x's as much. Look at the .oz/ml people.
does this work out on
Styrofoam
Awesome
Necron perfection
how did you get figure to stay on base?

trying searching for this product but seem like michaels dont carry them
task force pinoy From going there myself I can tell you that they don't carry it, at least not around where I live. It seems JoAnns and Walmart does though.
cool thnx bro
I actually just picked it up from JoAnn's, however it was on clearance so they may not be stocking it anymore.
What happened!!!! You never upload anymore
Muito legal.👏☺
sick

your voice sounds so different now
The music sounds like Stellaris
Chimerawargaming has just subscribe to your channel

Based
mmmm spicy brown
👍👍
nice artwork but blu tac ur base down so you dont 1) get ur dirty fingers all over it 2) dont have to chase it around your work space :P
Use agrellan earth
Not all of us have access to it, so this tutorial is godsent, for me at least!

a spicy brown xD
or you could use agrellan earth
Or you could just use Agrellan Earth...
Sparhawk, Pandion You mean £4:55 for a large pot? Cos that's not that expensive...
$9.40 per 23ml per colour or $15 for 236ml and being able to make it any colour I want. Hmm tough one.
it's called crackle PASTE! You cost me ten dollars calling it paint.
