    I recommend that you prime everything with black at the beginning before you start with the actual rock tinting, so that the cracks and crevices come into their own and appear even more natural. You'll see it makes a difference! But other than that it's a nice job!❤

      Beware: priming my desert wall for terrarium with black actually ended up very bad for me, as the brightest sandy colors kept turning gloomy greenish, no matter how many layers I applied - it actually reminded me an old airbrush tutorial in which they recommended not to use dark primer for bright colors.

    Hello, I tried this technique but my foam didn’t melt like that, it mainly curled ( flame far or close) any info?

    • @NightOwlModelling
      @NightOwlModelling  2 місяці тому

      Hello mate, I did not use a flame lighter, I did it using a mini torch, I moved closely and with fast movements, but the density value of styrofoam is very important here. I worked with 32-38 styrofoam. The lower ones are vulnerable to fire. Very large cavities are opened with a little fire effect. density is important. 🍺

      @@NightOwlModelling I was going to use some sculptamold to mimic the mountain/cliff behind the Hatshepsut temple, but will have a go at hacking away at the foam first. If it doesn't achieve the look I want, I can always go back to sculptamold. I'd prefer to keep the diorama lightweight though, and this method ticks that box.

    • @NightOwlModelling
      @NightOwlModelling  4 дні тому

      @@bRIZZAd Yes. For sharp rocks, cutting styrofoam is more efficient. For normal rocks, sculptamold is very successful. Of course, sculptamold can be made and shaped by scraping after it dries. 😉🤘

      First of all, thank you very much for your nice comment, 90% of the materials I use are natural materials. I always collect them from the places I come across during my travels. Fine sand is sea sand, pebbles of mixed sizes are by the stream. The big gray stones are from a parking lot on an intercity road. But I have also bought such products from the "noch" brand before. you can take a look if you want. 🤗

    just a newbie question, whats the purpose of adding acrylic paint and PVA glue on mixture( 2:08 ) that u use to prime/cover the "wall"?

    • @NightOwlModelling
      @NightOwlModelling  11 місяців тому +2

      Plaster and paint are still porous even after drying, which causes it to be absorbed in the subsequent painting and washing processes. After PVA glue dries, it plasticizes like a thin membrane and stops absorption. Cheers... 🍺

      Thanks a lot, man. I adjust the mixture by eye, because it depends on the density of the ingredients you use. There are many different types of plaster. The density of acrylic paints varies widely. That's why I was adding water and mixing until it reached a density that could be applied with a brush like the consistency of yogurt. 🍺

It’s actually a clever detail not possible using a single slab of styrofoam. I am not sure about the mounting struts used in the final scene. There is a solution to hide them completely.

    How did you install in the mounting rods to hold the model up?

    • @NightOwlModelling
      @NightOwlModelling  Рік тому +1

      For the "Pod" section, when I started the diorama, I made the rocks hard and solid with a mixture of plaster paint. I pierced it with a brass rod and made an "L" shaped piece (so that it would not turn left and right) and glued the part coming out of the back with hot silicone.

    • @lkw_65

      @NightOwl.ScaleModeller You just stabbed the rod through the rock wall?💀 No need for any drilling etc? As I've heard plaster chips easily under impact, and XPS isn't drill friendly

    • @NightOwlModelling
      @NightOwlModelling  11 місяців тому

      Washes are a fundamental way to add detail to a model. Paint thinned in density, (2 drops of paint 8 drops of water) for acrylic paint. This does not cover the color on the surface but tones it with the applied color! 👍

    Since the direction of the styrofoam is still visible in some parts of the wall you have two directions present/visible on the rock wall. That is usually not the case when it comes to sedimented rocks… Fault lines may occur, but the the sediment lines are broken up. It may be a minor thing, but still ”a thing” 😇
