Go with Hopwood Motorsports or Be Racing Tuning kit if you can. The Cx Racing kit; the turbo manifolds crack, included gaskets and hoses are garbage. The Blow off valve is junk, same as wastegate. The turbo charger is hit or miss. May or may not last you a year Hopwood motorsports kits are track tested and include literally everything. Be Racing's kit is high quality as well. Don't go cheap with a turbo build. Buy a good kit or assemble your own. This video is two years old, back when I was new to DIY turbo things. Now that I'm more educated with experience. I would not use this kit long term. That being said, the CX racing kit is a decent budget solution for people looking to learn. But not for avid enthusiasts. I feel I explained things fairly well for being an newbie, however. Now a days, the car is totally apart and is undergoing extensive modifications. I'm doing well and have my own little shop now. I'm still pumping out content for your viewing pleasure. The current build consists of an M52TUB28 that will remain NA with some modifications. I also have some M52B28 iron blocks that I'm looking to eventually build for boost in future. The later videos following the stock TUB25 turbo setup include details of the M52's and my current TUB28's. Update, I have given wrong info. The turbos supplied in this turbo kit are journal bearing turbos, not ball bearing. Although CX racing does sell the dual ball bearing variant separately.

This engine is an M52tub25 but turbo process is identical to M54, 😁 only thing different is, your M54's stock fuel filter with built on regulator is boost ready (only recommend an 255 fuel pump max for stock FPR however) 👍 all other parts bolt directly onto M54.

Just be sure to stay within the fuel pressure tolerance I mentioned in my last reply to you. (Do not exceed a 255LPH pump with stock M54 regulator)

Very nice clean set up. At 3 psi that's nothing for that engine and you have sensibly resolved any heating issues possible. it will last another 100k easily 👍🏾

I’ll offer some advice on catch can system, be sure to get regulating valves vs a check valve on the intake side. I had a issue with to much vacuum causing one or two lifters to tick at idle. (Oil flow problems) Also I’d suggest getting the new vtt crankcase breather for when you go into boost releasing positive pressure. It works great for me.
I have an open to atmosphere vent, haven't had any problems. I know running a sealed catch can system with boost on these cars can cause havoc. So I haven't messed with a sealed setup

How reliable is a setup like this? I own a 325i and want to go the turbo kit route but I want to build it conservatively for everyday use.. can anyone offer some advice?
The reliability of your car will be based on what components you've used and how conservative your tune will be. The car can last you a long time if built and tuned correctly. The biggest thing is to be sure the components you use are quality parts and will last. Before boosting the car, all maintenance must be up kept. You'll be adding extra stress to all major components. Stay safe and have fun, 👍
Yes, a very popular mod. Since this video there's been a lot changes. With M50 intake manifold, you lose bottom end power but increases up top. I very reputable tuner has tested the M50 intake manifold and M54B30 stock manifold, and the B30 intake actually showed superior. I honestly think that was a boosted application as well. But if I'm wrong, it's NA and obvious as the M50 manifold I feel is better for boost. However, in high boost applications you'd want to source a different intake or have one built, as with high boost, the M50 intake concentrates air to only a select few runners, leaving un even distribution

Really informative! I got a 2000 328i for my daily driver. Would this setup work on it? How difficult would boosting it be? I've never modified a car for performance and there's not a lot of info on the 328.
This kit will work. I advise doing your research before attempting to do the portrayed modifications. There's alot to learn, lots of trial and error. However, with a proper mindset and attitude, anything is possible.

Not this particular one for E46's, the CX Racing ones for E36 do and other random makes and models. But I have not once heard of an E46 one cracking. Only time I know of is, my one friend who cracked his by wrecking the car.
CX has a newer kit with an actual nice tubular manifold and downpipe and stuff meant EXACTLY for E46’s not just generic BMW’s if you want the link i have it. Its $1,800
I discussed that in the video, but I'm currently running Porsche 911 GT2 injectors, a Walbro 255 fuel pump and an aftermarket FPR. M54 engines with the FPR built on fuel filter are boost ready as they are however. I don't have links, but here's the injectors part number: 0280158123 ..as far as the pump, be sure to get a genuine, lots of fakes out there.

i like o turbo my e46 323ci but i dnt like to have the turbo top mount,,i want it under the manifold, also im interrested in swaping in an b58b30 or an n55 engine. there is a man in usa that does this and he has an e35 ti where he put in an n55 if i remember correkt.
Yes, the M52TU intake manifolds are restrictive. The M54B30 intake manifold flows rather well, with boost as well. Still made 340 hp with 9 psi on the M52TUB25 engine, stock intake. Either way these turbo videos are years old, lol. Was still fairly new to the platform.
Hi, Tyler, I have a crazy project as to replace my engine and converting my 2004 325 xi station wagon bmw in m3 but I also think about maybe to fix a turbo on it instead, not sure, the engine as you probably know is a straight 6 or whatever they call it, I do not know if it is possible and if it will blew off the engine....if you look on the youtube e46 bmw explained....it is the video of the prototype that bwm has built couple of years ago....thanks to let me know what you think or if you have any info and tips.....
That was mentioned in the video. Using the stock DME to tune. Both the MS42 and MS43 are highly tune-able. I'm getting the car remote tuned by a friend hopefully in the near future. Using Gelletto 1260 to flash the DME, and using RomRaider to take logs.

Yes, the GM won't handle the boost very well. I recommend to do an manual swap with an ZF trans. This car has an Getrag 250, which are also known to be weak.

No question is a silly/dumb question. You can turbo an auto trans, sure. But how long it's going to hold up is the real question. The automatic transmissions in these cars aren't really that capable of handling extra stress for an extended period of time

Hello, I would potentially turbo your car, yes. I'm much more diverse now, with my own little shop. I currently have to service 3 other E46s. One is receiving a turbo build, other two are for subframe reinforcement. So my availability won't be immediate. $5,000+ for a turbocharger conversion. All the parts required, tuning, fabrication/labor, etc. Would be around there and plus some. Could be closer to $6k.
I have a question about the coolant lines for your turbo. Any overheating issues so far ? Is this the correct way of cooling your turbo ? Is the feed line comming from the block and the return line goes into the lower radiator hose or is it the other way arround. Thank you . I am planning to use my e46 for drifting.

Im looking into this same setup and im curious how you run the o2 sensors. do you delete two sensors and just have the computer tuned to run off only one pre and post o2 for all 6 cylinders?
The CX racing 2 1/2" downpipe has two bungs for upstream oxygen sensors. The factory downstreams are gone and mapped out from the DME. The 3" CX racing downpipe that connects to the 2 1/2" has one bung, I use that one for my AFR O2 sensor. Come tuning time, it's up to you if you wanna run a single upstream sensor, as your tuner can do that for you. Also good to keep in mind, is that the AFR oxygen sensor is recommended atleast ~36 inches away from turbo. A lot of people don't mind the distance but I followed the recommended instructions. Upstream sensors are also known as narrow bad, and downstream are known as wide band.

Definitely gonna try this kind of build but planning on throwing in n52 how much horse power are you pushing I'm driving a E46 323i throwing in stage 1 clutch and flywheel atm will be throwing in stage 2 maybe 3.
I always double check for typos with engine types, you meant to say N52 correct? From an E9x? Anyway, to give you an idea, my 323i hit ~330 crank hp with only 9 psi. A fairly nice jump from the stock ~170 rated hp. An N52 would be a fairly complex swap I feel, perhaps you could opt for an M52TUB28 or M54B30. Me personally, am opting for an M52B28 iron block

And yes, sorta, it's actual title is M52TUB25 😁 as the TU stands for Technical Update, meaning it received dual VANOS. But will be swapped for an M52B28, single VANOS from E36 generation. In the US, we got iron block E36 M52's, minus Z3

Yes. This is a very popular question. I should've discussed this more in the video. This turbo kit will work with M52tub and M54 series engines. Please watch my detailed video number 2 for information on this kit. You'll see what to expect while installing.
The BOV is fully tightened here, it never actuated. What you're hearing is compressor surge, once I let off the throttle, it shuts. The boost has to go somewhere, it's fed through the turbo backwards as the compressor wheel chops it up, giving it that flutter sound. You can really hear it in my exhaust video during the in-cabin footage.
I'm not sure which DME version the 4 cylinder E46's have equipped. As we didn't receive them in the US. So I'd hate to give you the wrong answer. But I'm going to say yes, you will need the 6 cylinder's DME and wiring. You'll also need certain coding performed and maybe other harnesses.

@@abosilly M54B30. But only if you swap in different piston rings, M54 series have weak oil control piston rings and causes excessive oil consumption. Other things to do before boosting the M54 are, upgrading the oil pump and adding a oil pump chain tensioner, refreshing most if not all gaskets, upgrade head gasket and studs.. Etc. If you get ahold of some spare cash, might as well just rebuild the whole engine in preparation for boost. However: Everything also varies on what your power goal is. If you want a reliable daily, swap a lower mileage M54, only upgrade oil pump then boost it. Stock headgasket and studs are strong from factory, will support ~12 psi of boost. Rods and crank are forged. You only need approx 8 psi with a good tune to hit ~350+ wheel horsepower
Yep, more and more turbo kits are slowly making their way to production. Perhaps within the next couple of years there will be kits for E90's and such too.
Passing an vehicle safety inspection is going to vary upon your state's/county's regulations. There is no definite answer. As far as deleting components, that will also vary depending on your application.

Yeah it does. That’s why I mentioned the VTT oil cap breather for turbod bmws, it seals at vacuum and releases positive pressure during throttle.

How reliable is a setup like this? I own a 325i and want to go the turbo kit route but I want to build it conservatively for everyday use.. can anyone offer some advice?
The reliability of your car will be based on what components you've used and how conservative your tune will be. The car can last you a long time if built and tuned correctly. The biggest thing is to be sure the components you use are quality parts and will last. Before boosting the car, all maintenance must be up kept. You'll be adding extra stress to all major components. Stay safe and have fun, 👍
M50 Intake swap make more na power to help with the turbo
Yes, a very popular mod. Since this video there's been a lot changes. With M50 intake manifold, you lose bottom end power but increases up top. I very reputable tuner has tested the M50 intake manifold and M54B30 stock manifold, and the B30 intake actually showed superior. I honestly think that was a boosted application as well. But if I'm wrong, it's NA and obvious as the M50 manifold I feel is better for boost. However, in high boost applications you'd want to source a different intake or have one built, as with high boost, the M50 intake concentrates air to only a select few runners, leaving un even distribution

Really informative! I got a 2000 328i for my daily driver. Would this setup work on it? How difficult would boosting it be? I've never modified a car for performance and there's not a lot of info on the 328.
This kit will work. I advise doing your research before attempting to do the portrayed modifications. There's alot to learn, lots of trial and error. However, with a proper mindset and attitude, anything is possible.

Unless they are talking about the eBay manifold.
Not this particular one for E46's, the CX Racing ones for E36 do and other random makes and models. But I have not once heard of an E46 one cracking. Only time I know of is, my one friend who cracked his by wrecking the car.
CX has a newer kit with an actual nice tubular manifold and downpipe and stuff meant EXACTLY for E46’s not just generic BMW’s if you want the link i have it. Its $1,800

About the fuel system what all did you change? Injectors and pump, lines? and do you have a link for the parts that you used for the fuel system?
I discussed that in the video, but I'm currently running Porsche 911 GT2 injectors, a Walbro 255 fuel pump and an aftermarket FPR. M54 engines with the FPR built on fuel filter are boost ready as they are however. I don't have links, but here's the injectors part number: 0280158123 ..as far as the pump, be sure to get a genuine, lots of fakes out there.

i like o turbo my e46 323ci but i dnt like to have the turbo top mount,,i want it under the manifold, also im interrested in swaping in an b58b30 or an n55 engine. there is a man in usa that does this and he has an e35 ti where he put in an n55 if i remember correkt.

Yes, the M52TU intake manifolds are restrictive. The M54B30 intake manifold flows rather well, with boost as well. Still made 340 hp with 9 psi on the M52TUB25 engine, stock intake.
Either way these turbo videos are years old, lol. Was still fairly new to the platform.
Hi, Tyler, I have a crazy project as to replace my engine and converting my 2004 325 xi station wagon bmw in m3 but I also think about maybe to fix a turbo on it instead, not sure, the engine as you probably know is a straight 6 or whatever they call it, I do not know if it is possible and if it will blew off the engine....if you look on the youtube e46 bmw explained....it is the video of the prototype that bwm has built couple of years ago....thanks to let me know what you think or if you have any info and tips.....

Using the stock DME to tune. Both the MS42 and MS43 are highly tune-able. I'm getting the car remote tuned by a friend hopefully in the near future. Using Gelletto 1260 to flash the DME, and using RomRaider to take logs.

What transmission you have?
Yes, the GM won't handle the boost very well. I recommend to do an manual swap with an ZF trans. This car has an Getrag 250, which are also known to be weak.

@@Infinityxx3 hey man, I was looking back at comments. UA-cam doesn't notify me all of them! My engine is m52tub25. A turbo kit that fits an M52tub will bolt onto M54 as well. Installation process is identical. That is a good kit you've linked. They track test their parts

No question is a silly/dumb question. You can turbo an auto trans, sure. But how long it's going to hold up is the real question. The automatic transmissions in these cars aren't really that capable of handling extra stress for an extended period of time

Hello, I would potentially turbo your car, yes. I'm much more diverse now, with my own little shop. I currently have to service 3 other E46s. One is receiving a turbo build, other two are for subframe reinforcement. So my availability won't be immediate. $5,000+ for a turbocharger conversion. All the parts required, tuning, fabrication/labor, etc. Would be around there and plus some. Could be closer to $6k.
I have a question about the coolant lines for your turbo. Any overheating issues so far ? Is this the correct way of cooling your turbo ? Is the feed line comming from the block and the return line goes into the lower radiator hose or is it the other way arround. Thank you . I am planning to use my e46 for drifting.
This is an old video. But I remember how they're ran. Left side water fitting to coolant block drain, right side fitting to lower radiator hose.

Im looking into this same setup and im curious how you run the o2 sensors. do you delete two sensors and just have the computer tuned to run off only one pre and post o2 for all 6 cylinders?
The CX racing 2 1/2" downpipe has two bungs for upstream oxygen sensors. The factory downstreams are gone and mapped out from the DME. The 3" CX racing downpipe that connects to the 2 1/2" has one bung, I use that one for my AFR O2 sensor. Come tuning time, it's up to you if you wanna run a single upstream sensor, as your tuner can do that for you. Also good to keep in mind, is that the AFR oxygen sensor is recommended atleast ~36 inches away from turbo. A lot of people don't mind the distance but I followed the recommended instructions. Upstream sensors are also known as narrow bad, and downstream are known as wide band.

So you’re telling me that my 16k mile e36 can take a turbo like a champ then? (M52b25) well serviced
E36 has weaker studs. Would at least run better before throwing boost at it. OEM headgasket from dealer or reputable source with good studs will do.
Definitely gonna try this kind of build but planning on throwing in n52 how much horse power are you pushing I'm driving a E46 323i throwing in stage 1 clutch and flywheel atm will be throwing in stage 2 maybe 3.
I always double check for typos with engine types, you meant to say N52 correct? From an E9x? Anyway, to give you an idea, my 323i hit ~330 crank hp with only 9 psi. A fairly nice jump from the stock ~170 rated hp. An N52 would be a fairly complex swap I feel, perhaps you could opt for an M52TUB28 or M54B30. Me personally, am opting for an M52B28 iron block

And yes, sorta, it's actual title is M52TUB25 😁 as the TU stands for Technical Update, meaning it received dual VANOS. But will be swapped for an M52B28, single VANOS from E36 generation. In the US, we got iron block E36 M52's, minus Z3

There was no weird hesitation. I'm deleting it entirely to avoid boost leaks in future, as they like to leak at an certain psi.

Would this build work for the m54 engine?
Yes. M52tu series and M54 series engines share the same block and head. The installation process is identical for both, with minor differences.
Did you have to pull the engine to put in the turbo or was it just a bolt on kit ?
I installed the parts with the engine still in the car.

They're all capable. Same block and head for M52TU and M54 series engines. Same process for either one. Just depends on your displacement preference.

The overall price will vary widely. Expect at least 3-4k overall. Reliability is dependent on what components you use and your tune.

Maybe 8 - 10. Wouldn't wanna push her too hard. Biggest concern for me towards you is, the stretched oil pump chain and worn crank sprocket at that mileage

You can boost the engine as is, they already have decent head bolts and an factory MLS gasket 👍 Just keep boost levels appropriate of course
What are the specs on the fuel pressure regulator?
What is that blow off valve? I have a Tial bov but it doesn't have that nice flutter sound
The BOV is fully tightened here, it never actuated. What you're hearing is compressor surge, once I let off the throttle, it shuts. The boost has to go somewhere, it's fed through the turbo backwards as the compressor wheel chops it up, giving it that flutter sound. You can really hear it in my exhaust video during the in-cabin footage.

I'm not sure which DME version the 4 cylinder E46's have equipped. As we didn't receive them in the US. So I'd hate to give you the wrong answer. But I'm going to say yes, you will need the 6 cylinder's DME and wiring. You'll also need certain coding performed and maybe other harnesses.
Did you have to reinforce the subframe or anything?
It's an absolute must. I'll be building a custom brace.

N42, the 4 cylinder engine? No, you cannot install this turbo kit on that engine. It's designed for 6 cylinder engines. 👍

@@abosilly M54B30. But only if you swap in different piston rings, M54 series have weak oil control piston rings and causes excessive oil consumption. Other things to do before boosting the M54 are, upgrading the oil pump and adding a oil pump chain tensioner, refreshing most if not all gaskets, upgrade head gasket and studs.. Etc. If you get ahold of some spare cash, might as well just rebuild the whole engine in preparation for boost. However: Everything also varies on what your power goal is. If you want a reliable daily, swap a lower mileage M54, only upgrade oil pump then boost it. Stock headgasket and studs are strong from factory, will support ~12 psi of boost. Rods and crank are forged. You only need approx 8 psi with a good tune to hit ~350+ wheel horsepower

Passing an vehicle safety inspection is going to vary upon your state's/county's regulations. There is no definite answer. As far as deleting components, that will also vary depending on your application.
