Memories! A neighbor/friend's little daughter, named Melissa, was diagnosed with cancer. She was old enough to know that was not a good thing and was afraid. Her mother shared with Melissa that Geno had lung cancer (I did) and he is ok. She would come to me for support and courage and I would sing this song to her. She went into remission and since they moved away a long time ago-she is probably in her 30's now, but this brought back her sweet memory to me. thanks buddy!
Gregg Allman's voice comes through, dripping with humility and love. The world lost a great talent when he passed. Rest easy, Mr. Allman... your music will live on...
Hey Gayle, if you don't have Greg's book "My Crosses To Bear" you might consider buying it. A tell-all chronology of the ABB from Greg's perspective.....an eye opener. Got to see them on their last tour when they came thru Virginia Beach. Glad I did. Now fond of Tedeschi-Trucks band as that's where Derek Trucks landed post ABB. Loved your post.

This is one of those nice Allman Brothers songs that you put on, shut your eyes and just chill. Makes me think of summertime bar-b-ques, sitting around with friends tilting back a few cold beers.

Stuff's breaking loose at the Capitol and Jamel is taking a break from it all listening to "Melissa." Yes, agree you should listen to Ain't Wastin' Time No More." Love the Allman Bros. Nice one.
This is one of my favorite songs, it's such a southern frame of mind. Every time I hear this song I almost cry. You can feel the hardship in this song somehow. This is often a southern woman's experience in life waiting for a man who's working out of town or has to travel for work to come home. Especially those in the construction business. I just love this song because it says he's thinking about her.
You've killed me. My dad died 5 years ago today. He named me Erin Melissa because of this song. We saw the Allman Brothers together every single year since I was a little girl. Coming across this video this morning feels like a hug. Thank you.
Saturday afternoon in Dallas, Texas, early 1970's, 18 years young, nice calm pool hall, pitcher of beer, quarter drops off the table into the juke box, "Melissa" starts playing. That voice, those chord changes and that reverb-ed high pitch guitar....... I go back there in my mind, whenever.
I lost my Sister Melissa over 20 years ago and this song still brings her to my heart and a tear to my eye. She was a ballet dancer and a beautiful sweet spirit. RIP sweet one
I lost my mother a few months ago, and this was my her favorite Allman Brother's song. She loved your channel, and would always ask me if I had seen your latest metal reaction, lol. Thank you for this one, brother!
Please be the first one on UA-cam to react to Gregg Allman perform “Melissa” with Jackson Browne. The guitar solo at the end will have you in tears. Most emotional guitar solo I’ve ever heard.
Thanks for playing this. Very melancholy this evening. We lost my sweet brother in law last night to covid. Just trying to be still and listen to some music he loved. Andy was a Georgia boy through and through and loved The Allman Brothers.
Jamal, read Gregg's bio. His dad was a military man who was murdered when he stopped to help a man. His widow went out to work to support herself and her 2 very young sons. Duane was kind of brother/father at same time as they grew up without a father. Losing Duane was a huge personal loss. Complicated people with enormous talents & willingness to work hard & they found like minded musicians to create a unique style. Its said the Fillmore Live album is the best rock album of all time. Please look at those songs. Read up on Duane as well who played on other great songs as a sideman.
Thanks for doing this reaction. Beautiful song. My niece was named after this song. We played it at her funeral. RIP Melissa Jean. You're always remembered and loved 💗💗
I absolutely LOVE this song -- one of my forever most beautiful favorites. It has such a deep and emotional impact that I've never been able to explain, but I'm near tears every single time. Watching the live performances -- especially with Dickie Betts. Watching Gregg just sent chills, especially the lyrics about the "dead man's ghost" -- he looked up and makes me wonder if he was thinking of or seeing his brother Duane in that moment.
So many memories! My lady 50 years ago when this song came out was named Melissa. Called her"sweet Melissa". Lost track of her many years ago. Hope she is alive and well. We were young and in love. Thanks Jamel_aka_Jamal.
His brother Duane left a guitar tuned in E on the bed. He didn't really play guitar and picked it up and messed around and came up with the verse. Tried to show it to Duane but he wasn't interested. Years later they tried it again and this was Mellissa.
I love when they do that too Jamel. I saw allman brothers live at pine knob in Michigan. I think it was probably 1979. Great concert, great time. They had so much soul.
Oh man! I love love this song! My favorite by the Allman Brothers! Beautiful song!! Love Greg Allman's voice in this one...so much emotion! Also love Blue Sky & Jessica...
My favorite Allman Brothers song. I remember driving across the PA Turnpike on a beautiful Fall evening with the windows down and "wind blowing through my hair" with this song turned up. Beautiful, bittersweet . . .
A band that I was in back in the 80s used to play this song. Our guitar player actually named his daughter Melissa after this tune. Every time I hear it, it takes me back to a very cool period in my life. Thanks for this, Jamel!
A boy I grew up with became a professional musician, playing drums for several rock bands. Over the years, no matter where he was playing, he would call me and play this song. I somehow represented a time of innocence, his school boy crush, the hometown girl. He came through Dallas once and we went to the movies, walked around downtown holding hands and ate cupcakes at a sidewalk bakery. We stole a couple of sweet kisses before he had to take off. It was all so pure, sweet and innocent. I got to be Melissa that day. He passed away last year, but this song occasionally pops up in my FB memories from him.
The Allman Brothers Band Lyrics "Melissa" Crossroads, seem to come and go, yeah. The gypsy flies from coast to coast Knowing many, loving none, Bearing sorrow havin' fun, But back home he'll always run To sweet Melissa... mmm... Freight train, each car looks the same, all the same. And no one knows the Gypsy's name No one hears his lonely sighs, There are no blankets where he lies. Was blessed to have been at the 50th Allmans "The Brothers" show at Madison Square Garden this past March before NYC shut down - This is one of the chill'ist songs from these guys - Peaches forever!!!!!
Such a beautiful song, haunting guitar work by Dickey Betts on this. It showed, to me, just how legendary the Allman Bros. were & are, that they were able to pick up the pieces after Duane Allman's death & come back with albums like "Eat A Peach" & "Brothers & Sisters". Amazing.
Wow! My Greg Allmam story. 1992 I was a DirecTv installer. I arrived at work to see I had a work order for Greg Allman in San Rafael. Arrived onsite and was introduced to Mr. Allman. Now a bit of background. Melissa was one of my all time favorite songs as a young teenager. Had the 8-track! I had long blonde hair and at times was compared to him in looks. So I meet him and start my install. Finished up and walked Greg thru basic operation of satellite service's. He offered me a joint, but politely declined. Left the jobsite with a small intimate priceless memory of one of my rock heros. Peace to you Jamal, and to all, as you walk your path...
I was in Macon in November and visited Rose Hill Cemetery to see the Allmans' graves. Theirs are well-kept, but a lot of the cemetery is weedy and overgrown. This is a beautiful song. Thank you for reacting to it. Love and peace!
You are such a joyful break From Today's weirdness. I would still love to watch you hear Paul Simon sing American tune. It's a song I think everyone needs today. And I do mean today!
Gregg said he wrote it way before fame & was liked by his brother before his untimely death. His bro was guitar legend Duane Allman. But, he perfected the song with the band later. But, its obviously emotionally about his dead brother (lyric about dead man & no blanket for his head) and his love of life. It's so melancholy but exceptionally beautiful. The acoustic version with Gregg, Dickie Betts & Warren Haynes on Dennis Miller youtube video is also superb. The Allman Brothers were perfection.
This great music will always be alive, as long as the uninitiated find it through someone like you, Jamel. You are doing all of these artists a great service by sharing your discovering of these treasures. Thank you.
I never get tired of the Allman Bros. sound; beautiful.

The Allman Brothers Band Lyrics
"Melissa"
Crossroads, seem to come and go, yeah.
The gypsy flies from coast to coast
Knowing many, loving none,
Bearing sorrow havin' fun,
But back home he'll always run
To sweet Melissa... mmm...
Freight train, each car looks the same, all the same.
And no one knows the Gypsy's name
No one hears his lonely sighs,
There are no blankets where he lies.
In all his deepest dreams the Gypsy flies
with sweet Melissa... mmm...
Again the morning's come,
Again he's on the run,
Sunbeams shining through his hair,
Appearing not to have a care.
Well, pick up your gear and Gypsy roll on, roll on.
Crossroads, will you ever let him go? (Lord, Lord)
Will you hide the dead man's ghost,
Or will he lie, beneath the clay,
or will his spirit float away?
But I know that he won't stay without Melissa.

The acoustic version with Gregg, Dickie Betts & Warren Haynes on Dennis Miller youtube video is also superb. The Allman Brothers were perfection.
Right on brother !! Good Jam !!
