OTT, the stealth game killer, goes hand-in-hand with early extension to compensate. I’ve been battling this curse for years and I have to say this is the best instructional video I’ve seen.
So i just went to the range, focusing on a nice, high backswing, and starting to load my front leg while dropping the club, and boom, no more swinging from the outside. I was flushing everything and it seemed like my swing was effortless, just because of that first move of dropping the club downwards, allowing more time for my legs and hips to make power. It also felt great crushing draws with the ball just inside my back heel. Unreal feels man - best range session yet kudos to you! From 🇨🇦
I just discovered this video of yours and want to thank you. I have played off of 6 handicap and the pulled shot has always been my bugbear. I have never heard of this tip of placing the ball back in the stance. I have just come back from the golf range and apart from hitting behind the ball a bit for the first 6 or so shots, I am pleased to say it definately does work. In fact hitting a draw feels really good as its not something I ever usually do. Thanks again, and I have subscribed.
I've scoured UA-cam for golf instruction. Chris Ryan is by far the best at actually giving practical use tips. His videos have helped me work out kinks in my swing a few times. Like actually helped me get rid of bad habits.
Chris. I’ve been playing golf for just over 20 years, ( started aged 50 ), always an “ over the top” swing. I’ve just taken this to the course and hit the furthest drive I’ve ever made. So many good shots in the round. Here’s hoping I can get it into my routine. Trail arm under lead arm, simple. Many thanks.
Im done! Can't give any swing drill down better than this. My swing , my swing, my swing... I wish you could see it Chris. You are already my teacher of the year 2023!!!! God bless you bruh!!! Kevin
The clearest and most understandable lesson on the proper swing path. And I like the way you (Chris) are more casual in your communication. You’re more effective and enjoyable that way. Thanks!
Thank the lord! At last, someone who makes perfect sense and explains the potential causes (in the other video) and then gives exercises to fix the problem. Thank you so much sir 👍 👍
Watched this video last night and set up the alignment stick at the range today. Huge help! It really helps you feel how the club should drop in the slot and that move leads to a better (seemingly effortless) turn. Great video Chris!
Fantastic drill. I've just been experimenting with this move and have searched you tube for some content that validates it. This does just that and gives me some perfect drills to bed in the move too. Thank you Chris.
Just tried these drills after my worst round in years. I starting hitting a tight little draw. 180 degrees from yesterday. You may have just saved my golf game. Thx
Thanks for this Chris. I've struggled with the 'over the top' swing for as long as I can remember but have never seen these drills before. I have now ordered a 'smash bag' and will be trying your suggestions over the coming weeks. I'll let you know how I go......
Good evening Chris, I’m subscribed to your channel and don’t know how I missed this video, I’ve recently changed my irons and can’t hit them 😁, upon videoing myself for some unbeknown reason I have started coming over the top, So fortunately I own the very same bag and although receiving many strange looks at the range, I have tried this sequence of drills out , for 4 consecutive visits, and as always everything you preach WORKS, Thank you so much for your excellent simplistic coaching and sharing on UA-cam All the best Darran Ball
Ive struggled over the top all my golf career and never thought that forward in stance would cause it. I purposely play it very forward to encourage the weight shift forward and higher launch. Gonna have to try this over the weekend!
I am doing this drill everyday. This is without a doubt, the absolute best drill. It teaches that the golf swing kind of has two parts, one the downswing to the inside, and two, the turn which squares the club. Love this!
What a great drill!!! I"ice never liked using an impact bag but this one REALLY makes sense!! You have a unique understanding of the physics of the swing (or at least a unique way of explaining it!) and your teaching methods and explanations are superb! thank you!!
Great series of drills to help stop my "over the top" swing flaw. I was shocked how well I hit the ball when I moved it back in my stance! My ball speed increased & carry significantly, my club path changed from outside to inside, and I hit some mini-draws & eliminated my normal slice. It is possible to transition over time to moving the ball more forward in my stance?
I know it’s been 8 months since you commented… Moving the ball forward in the stance tends to make your club path go more from out-to-in (fades and slices)
Chris, what a great video. As always, you consistently put out videos and tuition(free of charge) that impact every player from 0 to 54, without alienating anybody. Thank you 🙏
Hi, great drills! Just one concern: won't the 3rd drill make you lean back and not transfer your weight to the left? I saw some drills for helping weight transfer by moving the ball forward (towards the left), which is what you are advising against in this video. So whilst it could help curing swinging over the top, it could negatively impact on weight transfer (?)
Chris, I think this drill makes complete sense. My only challenge is that I tend to come over the top early in the downswing (with a steep shaft) and then somehow correct it half way down by re-routing the club and early extending. This means that at impact - all being well - I do actually come from the inside. But it is erratic as it involves perfect timing and early extension. Do you have any drills that stop the over the top move right at the very start of the downswing?
Got here with that very issue. That the golf gods allow "some" percentage of perfect shots, it means that when you hit the really crappy one with what feels like the same swing, then the degree of anger and disappointment is greatly magnified. Those first two drills look to be both boring and potentially painful. :-) The third one, however, looks to be much more fun, and I don't see how it could be done *without* dropping the hands down more "in the back". Sick of trying to manipulate my right elbow and left wrist in an uncomfortable manner. Seems like just more of the same "sometimes the timing is right, sometimes not". That third drill with the ball back would seem to have the potential for grooving the move without having to think about it. Can see where I might just block the ball out to the right, but hitting into a net, so what? Shall give it a go and see if I can earn a cheap "feel".
Gave it a go with DTL video. Still the same ugly early extension. Maybe that's just not what this is designed to fix, as I generally manage to "come from the inside" with my manipulations, anyway. Ball placed way back in my stance didn't make my hands arrive any lower to P6. My P6 seems to "align" OK, but my hands are clearly in a higher position than what good swings show. Oh, well. Lots of shot results seem nice from that position. Shall just lower my expectations and work more on the shot game. 🙂
Chris, I believe that is your best ever video drill, lesson, so easy to follow and I know once I start to use it later in the week it will work, fortunately I managed to purchase the exact same smack bag only 4 weeks ago, brilliant
Well. Just got back from the range. I have been a chronic over the top golfer all my life. Its not perfect, but using your first drill I was amazed at the results. I'm 68 years old. My PW before travelled about 100 yds on avg. I'm now hitting it around 120 (mini draw, sometimes a big pull). Of all the lessons and videos this is the best result oriented advice yet. I don't think I'm clearing my hips well but still...progress. I'm a slow learner (really slow) but I learn. I'm hoping that the "missing this piece" video will help me with this as well. Off to the range tomorrow and will try your third drill with the ball back in my stance. Stay tuned.
For me, I was taught years and years ago to bring the club back down the way you brought it back. Plus, if you're moving forward, looks to me like you would miss the bag completely. But hey...if this works for you, great!!! We always need help. Thanks for all you do, Chris.
Thanks Chris for sharing all these videos with us! Always insightful breakdown of relevant movements and useful training tips! You are such a brilliant pedagogue! /Michael (Sweden)
Amazing and informative! Only been playing a week, but been going to the range for an hour or two each day after work so these videos help, being a lefty tho I have to flip all your tips so i confuse myself lol, if i hit right too left does this mean I am hitting over?
I did this with my swing without knowing why in the past. Thankyou for giving me the reasons and information as to why it worked for me. Keep the great content going 👏 👌
Your videos are brilliant. I am an unusual case. I am a dentist and had to give up the game in 1997 because my arms and hands and back could not take the additional stress of playing golf. I was a seven handicap at the time and it was hearbreaking but I needed to continue to make a living. Now, after close to twenty five years, I am retired and have decided to try and get my game back. It is going pretty well but I do not have the same body that I did twenty five years ago and my muscle memory was a little thin. I also had to learn to put away my MacGrgeor persimmon driver and begin learning to hit one of those frying pans on a stick. Your lessons have been enormously helpful in all regards. I was also a Dental Professor and so I know a bit about teaching things which can be very hard to learn. A great teacher makes things seem much easier than they might seem to the student. You surely do that. I send my gratitude to wherever it is you are. I am in New Hampshire! Cheers, then!

@@ChrisRyanGolf Just checking in to let you know this worked so well. I've always had a problem with staying back and I now feel it was due to being so over the top. Drill 1 has helped me shallow the club out and free up lower body to weight shift. Amazing thank you
This is exactly what I need Chris especially moving the ball towards your trail heel at address. My hands at the top of the backswing are going in a straight line towards the golf ball (you refer to this in another video of yours involving hitting the driver). I like how you ‘guarantee’ this will fix it but I’ll not hold you to it lol! Great content Chris 👍🏻
Outstanding, thorough treatment of all aspects of this swing fault - one that I've oscillated in and out of for the past year. Really well done content.
I have struggled to correct the over the top swing for years. Some of the difficulty I had derived, I believe from my baseball swing because I am a dead pull hitter. Your videos, not just this one, have done wonders for my golf swing. I have never heard before the points you make here about the position of the ball. Early on in my golf instruction, I was told to keep the ball further forward in my stance (I think because my release was late in the swing.) More recently I have been trying to have the ball further back in my stance, but I tend to let it creep forward as I play a round. I can’t wait to do these drills to see and feel ball flight changes as I play around with ball position. Thanks again.
Hi Chris, great stuff, been following this channel for a couple of years now. Can you do a video on approach shots from say 120 yards out? I have a difficult time dialing in the distance as well as getting it on line to my target. I’m a two handicap and getting better at this would save me several shots a round. Thanks!
Fantastic advice and these drills look like they will give a good sense of the feels one must experience. I do suffer from over the top so will be giving these drills a go! Thanks Chris!!!
Chris, enjoyed your boosting club speed course BTW. For over the top, what plane line denotes the over/ under? You seem to use elbow plane line here, but I have also seen shaft plane in other videos. I'm more on the elbow plane, but trying to figure out if that is over the top or not. Thx
Love CRs content, I've had an appaling case on and off of the short iron shanks for about 3 years so bad I've considered giving up, hopefully this drill will help.
Hi Chris, how do I fix an over the top swing with an in to out path? My shoulders are open at impact but my hands compensate by dropping behind my body during the downswing
Very good Chris.. I’ve used this. My fix was to try and keep my back or upper torso from turning early. These drills do that. I’ve even closed my stance 45 degrees and out my weight on my front foot, that’s helped as well. Your videos are great. Appreciate what you do… I share info like this to golfers that are struggling at a range I go to a couple of times a week, when weather permits… What we share multiplies, what we withhold diminishes…. Keep up the good work….
I really need this drill because this exactly is what I'm doing wrong most of the time. I hate this, but the drills seem really a great solution. I'm gonna try all three as soon as possible. 👍🏻😀
Nice impact bag. Who makes it, as most of the ones I’ve seen are round. Thanks also for the video, definitely a common fault, and something I’m working on, and my brother needs to!
Brilliant Chris, thank you again for sharing another awesome lesson, I’m definitely heading to the range this afternoon. To help others with the creativity for making a strike bag, I had an old kit bag and stuffed an old duvet into it... bit of a struggle and had to tie it shut, but it works a treat by hitting the bottom part, which has a tough layer.
Tried moving the ball around in my stance on the range and it confirmed my over the top problem; when hitting a 7i I had the ball in the back of my stance it didn’t go the same shape as yours (R to L), it went L to R, which I think emphasises my OTT problem! Yet when I put the ball forward (inside left heel as driver) it went pretty straight. I also moved my left hand around the grip a little to close the face for a stronger grip and the ball still went straight! Something has gone to pieces that needs to be back on line before a club match on Sunday 😥 so I certainly need to get busy with the bag on a regular basis.
Literally the best "over the top fix" video ever done by any golf youtuber. Well done sir . Thank you
Thanks Larry

Will this also help fix thrusting hips towards the ball causing standing up?
Nice impact bag. Who makes it, as most of the ones I’ve seen are round.
Thanks also for the video, definitely a common fault, and something I’m working on, and my brother needs to!
First class, much appreciated 😊
Could these drills be used with the driver, or are they specific to irons
Yea they could, the final drill may be tough with the low loft, but could be used to get the feel
DEER!! did anyone see the deer sprint across the fairway at 0:55? Chris R, awesome video as always; insightful, practical. ty
I always miss them!! They run across whist I’m not looking 🤣
Love that, bet it works great, sometimes you have to get a little creative with training aids 👍😁
Looking forward to trying this at the range later.
Hope it helps Gareth
I like the golf smash bag...can you tell me the brand?
From what he said in the video, you may as well just get a binbag and fill it with old sheets or newspapers, gives you a target and protects the club.
The smash bag is from TourStriker Golf
Thanks Chris, this will be really helpful for me as I'm working hard to get my swing more in to out!
Thanks Ed and yeah they should really help, all slightly different but effective
