@@KTF0 Right, because he didn't swing. You can't hit a damn thing when you leave the bat on your shoulder. Two outs, bases loaded, bottom of the 9th, championship game at home...the exact scenario every kid dreams of growing up with baseball. I know Wainwright's over the top curve was nasty, but the count was 0-2 and Beltran was the 3 hitter. There is no other pitch Beltran should have been looking for. No one could convince me otherwise. The kid in me will never forgive that sucker, but the coach in me thanks him. Watching the 3rd strike go by is a cardinal sin and every kid that has played for me knows that. Thank you Carlos Beltran. Thank you for breaking my heart, but teaching me a valuable lesson. Sorry for the rant. Just watched the game on MLB. Stirred up some ancient emotions.

Yup he should have swung at that first pitch fastball. Adam wainwright's curve was perfect that evening. You could not hit that pitch if you wanted too. There was to much movement on the ball. At best the squeeze play would have tied it up. No one would have expected it. Willie was playing for the Yankee big hit and not small ball. In the situation down by one you play the small ball and start your arms in the bullpen. That was the Mets year and they were the best team in all of baseball. Love Willie but he strategically and tactically played that inning
      all wrong.

Will never forget this. Amazing. A true testament to how brilliant Yadi is at calling games. Decided to go with the first pitch changeup, which set up the rest of the at bat. Show him a curve just outside of the zone on pitch 2. Up 0-2, you might think a pitcher wastes one, tries to get the hitter to chase out of the zone. Nope. Beltran is a smart hitter. Notice how Molina touches his glove to the dirt right before the final pitch is delivered, guarantee this is to throw Beltran off and get him thinking that nasty curve was just going to be a ball in the dirt. Too bad for Carlos and the Mets.

***** I agree it was a tough pitch, however we must look at two things. First is the situation. Any person who played any baseball would tell you 3 2 count bottom of the ninth you have to swing at those close pitches. Second is the talent. Carlos Beltran is extremely talented. And you can tell he knew he messed up. Its funny because the year after I believe Tom Glavine threw an awful game against the worst team at the time the nationals to complete one of the worst collapses in mlb history.

I even remember watching this before we closed the store I worked at. I was like YES Let's gooooooooo! This is the guy we want up! At best hoping for a game winning 3 run HR. At worst a single to keep the train rolling and perhaps make it 3-2. I didn't even bother watching the World Series after this one. Especially seeing how the Cards easily swept the Tigers. To many what ifs and feelings of blowing a sure title opportunity.

Who would have known the Cardiac Cards would pick up both Beltran and Berkman late in their careers, both putting up pretty solid numbers, with Berkman nailing down clutch hits in the '11 Series. Credit to Wainwright for executing those pitches, but credit to Molina for calling them. Molina took charge of the situation and led Wainwright through that at-bat. It was a nerve-wracking situation and throwing Beltran any sort of fastball would've been dangerous. But Molina did what good leaders do - he took responsibility and instilled calm in the pitcher and told him, "Don't worry, I'll call the pitch, you throw it.

After Chavez phenomenal snow cone catch robbing Scott Rolen of a go ahead 2 run homerun you could just feel the momentum change even more in the Mets favor . I certainly had that all too familiar sinking feeling at that moment . Thankfully , a very young Yadier Molina stepped up big for the Cards in the 9th. and got it right back . Wainwright somehow nailed it down and the clinch was on . What a maddening series !

Not a Mets fan or a Cards fan... but what happened to Beltran in that at bat? This is a guy who everyone agrees was a great hitter, "murdered" Cardinals' pitching, etc. Yet, in the biggest at bat maybe of his life, he takes a first-pitch fastball for a strike, swings at something out of the zone, and then gets wrung up on what was, granted, a great pitch. Did the moment get to him? I would find that hard to believe.

Remember when Carlos Beltran struck out looking against Adam Wainwright to end the game on a curveball. Beltran was obviously looking for a Fastball from Wainwright and that's why he was caught looking with the curve.. Imagine if Beltran knew a curve ball was coming. That changes that at bat.

The 06 Mets got dealt a bad hand right before the playoffs started when they lost HOFer Pedro Martinez and longtime postseason stalwart El Duque Hernandez (their Game 1 and 2 starters) right before the playoffs started. They went from heavy National League favorites to even money at best. It left them having to start John Maine (16 starts all season) and Oliver Perez (only with the team since the trade deadline and 3-13 on the season) twice each in a championship series. It was a testament to how good their team was that they swept the first round and made it to Game 7 of the LCS even with a skeleton crew of a starting staff.
