Hey, Jim! I wanted to drop you a quick note to thank you for the video and especially the part about the wiring harness clip release location. I had watched your video prior to purchasing the hitch and sometime between watching/ordering/installing I forgot your little tip and had to do a rewatch. Thank you very much for adding that little part. For those of you who are interested, it is located at 5:29 in the video.
Nice. Always good to feed back to the 'Tubes. This is the sort of video that brought me here in the first place. So, on behalf of all the people that will just watch your video repeatedly while installing a hitch and then move on, Thanks! (not that I have done that more than 500 times.)
Your video convinced me that I can definitely install the hitch myself. Just ordered the Lexus OEM hitch from Bell Lexus in Scottsdale. Looking forward to getting it installed and being able to use my new-to-me GX for hauling my boat and jetskis!
Some dealers remove that small bumper valance and forego the spacers to make it sit up higher into the rear bumper for a more integrated look. And to hide it more. Also improves the tongue height greatly.
@@chrisjohnson8882 no I actually mounted it myself removing the center cut out and used zero spacers. Maybe I’ll post a video to show because to my knowledge there’s no way to post a pic on this reply of mine. Our gx is a 23 premium plus with the gray lower bumper trim valances front and rear.
Good video. I noticed the hitch isn't flush with the back. Since the back door swings instead of dropping does the hitch get in the way much when trying to access the back area?
Very great helpful video, for a 21 GX 460 there are a few different steps, removal of the old plug holder and plastic bumper part covering the hitch spot. Thanks it everything else was the same.
Thanks Jim, looking forward to attaching my newly ordered Lexus hitch....they didnt include any instructions though...so gonna take my time and re-watch your video several times!
It's done and completed...video helped a bunch....challenges getting torque right to remove first tow hook bolts.... also unable to get the muffler to drop so used the pry bar method....that was hard....felt like it took 465 turns of a wrench to get the small bolts in...:) but its done and complete and looks great...needed my irend to help me hold the hitch up and in place to tighten bolts though......
Just installed the curt hitch receiver today, it was a breeze, I only tow a jetski so it makes sense to spend 150 instead of 500 also super easy. Make sure to line it up with the center of vehicle. Idk if this is wrong but I also used tread locker. Note that there are off brand versions of it in Amazon for even less money, but I liked the fit and finish of the Curt one and I trust it more. All in all, adding a tow hitch is far less expensive and scary than I thought when I bought my GX
Great video Jim! I think I'm going to just go with the Curt Hitch as that will more than accommodate my towing needs on my 2014 GX 460 which is just 2 Seadoo's and their trailer. I'm just deciding on if I want the longer or shorter one. Anyway, I love the wheel color on those OEM wheels. I think it's just called "smoked hyper silver" and the wheel part number is ALY74297U77. They kind of look like factory PVD Chrome too though in a way....... Is this correct or are you not exactly sure? My GX being a base model 2014, just has the light hyper silver 6-Spoke wheels that came on all the 10-13 model GX 460's.
My wheels are full chrome. Not sure what they are called, but I looked up the names you provided and it was not that. It was some type of add on, or custom made for this vehicle to be in the showroom of Lexus. The spare is stock unfortunately and does not match.
Thanks! I'm planning to put a hitch on my '18 GX 460, more for rear end protection and ability to attach a receiver hitch recovery point if needed. Prices, as you say, are all over the map for the factory part. The Curt currently goes for about $230: I've found the Lexus mount for about $50 more, with free shipping (I think) or a 90-miles drive to pick up. You definitely have to shop.
Keep in mind when you put on a hitch for rear end protection, what that translates to is your bumper and car not taking the hit, and all that energy is transferred to the frame which goes directly to you. If you are not towing, I would let the bumper do its thing. You and your passengers would be better off.
Thanks for the video Jim! I had to go with the smaller curt hitch for the time being since I cannot find a oem class 4. Your tip about lowering the tire helped greatly. Made the install easy peasy!
I did not have one for a while. Then when I got the big 24ft trailer I got this. ua-cam.com/video/u0-68k3lPog/v-deo.htmlsi=ntR5j75HXqolNr0b I would say if your trailer has elec brakes on it, you should have a controller.
Just want to add: once Lexus did the halt on production for hitches, and came back with them, some of the bolts they provide are a little different than the instructions used in the video and mostly those available online. Sizing wise and such. Also, if you’re a luxury package, you have to remove the middle portion of the rear lip, pretty simple like 5 or 6 clips. Other than that mostly alls the same.
Are you referring to the narrow strip (valance) at the bottom of the rear bumper? In Jim's video, his lower bumper valance is still on the vehicle after he installs the tow hitch receiver.
I just got one for $400 during the Lexus sale. Had it shipped from Lexus bell, I believe. The sale had free shipping and the bell dealer had a nice discount on it. Ballews in Tacoma installed it in less than an hour for $125. I took the spare tire off to make it quicker for them. Guy at Ballews wasn’t charming and he tried to charge me more than their original quote but they did a good job.
I just called Lexus dealer in my area (Kansas City) to get the same exact hitch and was told that they are not allowed to sell them even if they have them in stock due to liability issues. He also mentioned that they will be releasing a new one sometime in late August or September of 2022.
Thank you for this information. I called to verify there was not a recall or such. They took some time and made some calls and got that there is a supply shortage, and also possible a batch manufacture issue, but all the older ones should be fine. And of course the new ones should be fine.
They are now available if you haven’t already gotten one, I was put on a wait list and today (5 days later) I was called, when I asked the parts guy to put me on the list he said Lexus is only sending 3 per week to each dealer
Yeah, I am having a difficult time finding this tow hitch for my 2011 GX460 anywhere online. I guess I will call the Lexus dealer about getting on the list?
@@vannerdherd I just bought one for $550 plus tax was a little over $600.00 Was shocked when the parts department told me they had it in stock. 5/9/2023 Looked exactly like the one in this video.
@@NjGent01 I called my local Lexus dealer yesterday and they had one too...however, I think I am just going with the $120 version (5000lbs) instead of almost $500 more for 1800lbs pulling power...I just need to haul my ebike and pull my trailer every so often.
The wiring harness mount on a ‘22 sits really far back. Anyone know how to remount closer to the hitch and make it easier to connect the wires to the trailer? Using the curt mount
There’s supposed to be a bracket included that allows you to relocate the plug from the factory location beneath the rear end to be mounted on the hitch itself for easier access.
@@AlexRodriguez-em7up from my understanding they’re changing something so you’re right has to be quality wise but should be returning back according to my Lexus parts dept 🤞🏼
Went to lexus to order a tow hitch but they could not get me one because lexus has a hold on them at the moment does anyone know where i can get my hands on a tow hitch?
Bought my new GX460 a month ago. Today called the dealer for a price on installing the hitch. $1200. Plus after checking my VIN # they said that it can not be installed, since the car is not "prepped" for towing??? Kept telling me I need a bigger alternator, extra radiator, towing wiring harness etc. etc. Smelled like BS to me? never heard of anything like that on a GX460.
I spent time looking over the owners manual. Nothing like that mentioned. Went on two Lexus dealers web sites to order the same Class IV tow bar. Asked for the VIN # so I entered it. It came out "Green" meaning it is fine? The RX models on the other hand, have additional requirements like the ones my dealer mentioned.@@StreetRodJim
I hope you realize the hitch is only rated for 5000 pounds when conventionally towing. You need a weight distributing hitch setup in order for it to handle 6800 pounds. So not only do you have to buy the ball and the ball mount as you mentioned but also the weight distributing hitch setup.
The new version official part is PT22860141. The old part number was off by one digit. PT22860140
I cannot find anywhere that charge $350 for this part. All 3 lexus dealers around me charge over $500 for it.

The M12 bolts, two of them are shorter than the other 2 by a few mm. Do you know which M12 go where?
Some dealers remove that small bumper valance and forego the spacers to make it sit up higher into the rear bumper for a more integrated look. And to hide it more. Also improves the tongue height greatly.
That does not work with this trailer hitch. You will end up with a gap and have to use the spacers no matter that you removed the trim
