  • Welcome to a brand-new episode of The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet, where we are joined by Crystal Palace owner Steve Parish for the final instalment of our visit to the club.
Get ready for a passionate discussion about the current state of English football and the complexities of running a football club.
No stone is left unturned as we delve into some of the most pressing topics in football. First on the agenda, is the contentious subject of Project Big Picture where he shares his thoughts on the controversial proposal that aimed to restructure English football.
Steve offers us a fascinating glimpse into the world of Crystal Palace. He sheds light on the challenges and rewards that come with being at the helm of a Premier League club. He also speaks about Aleksander Čeferin the President of UEFA and how football organisations like his are affecting the future of the game for clubs like Palace.
We couldn't ignore the proposed European Super League that sent shockwaves through the entire footballing world. Steve offers his take on this seismic event and provides an unique perspective on the ramifications it would have had on the footballing landscape.
One of the most significant debates in English football revolves around the financial gap between the so-called "big clubs" and the rest of the Premier League. Steve shares his views and sheds light on the impact this has on the league and the clubs that operate outside the elite.
The EFL is a vital component of the football pyramid and has faced its fair share of financial challenges. Steve advocates for the Premier League to step up and support the lower divisions, emphasising the importance of fairness in football at all levels.
Finally, we tackle Manchester City's Premier League charges and the consequence these allegations have on City from an owner’s perspective.
Join us for this brilliant conversation covering the big topics that affect everyone in football.
    00:00 - 03:22 Project Big Picture
    03:22 - 10:54 European Super League & Ceferin
10:05 -15.21 The Premier League & EFL and regulation

First and foremost he’s a palace fan so he has the club at the front of his heart, second of all he’s an extremely savvy business man that knows exactly how our clubs needs running! Third and lastly he seems to know exactly what steps our football pyramid needs to progress in the correct direct. Class from Steve providing us ‘fans’ with this beautiful insight 🙌🏽

And on top of that other clubs have adopted pep style of playing.. now I get what Gary is saying giving what the top clubs have done over the years n it would cool if they could somewhat help out any enemy club like those in championship to get a little boost to fight to join the premier league..that would be a great idea but would it be fair if when they get that boost and other clubs are failing to get promoted?

I like the overlap but in this Gary constantly interrupted before Steve could finish his point. I know Gary’s point and as a L2 fan I totally get it. However it would have been a much better interview had we been allowed to hear Steve points and insights in full, and then Gary challenge it, rather than constantly cut him off to push his own point of view.

Brilliant interview and good insight! However I would be interested to know exactly what Steve would do and what he wants for the PL. To much discussion about what everyone else is doing and not what he wants.

If they want more money to filter down the league, why don’t they tell the teams that 20 players of their 25 man squad must be British, and 15 must be English. They’ll have to dip into the domestic leagues for players. Then add a wage cap on all players and a transfer levy on foreign transfers.

As compelling as it was refreshing. A genuine football club owner. Who's next? I guess the ones we really want to hear from are otherwise occupied at the shredder.

Great interview and great insights and hopefully we can get more interviews with owners going forward.
What had only been mentioned briefly when talking about the money to be distributed to the EFL, is that it should come with restrictions like x percentage needs to be spent on infrastructure.
Look at Wigan, Bolton, Charlton to name a few. Your telling me the EFL want to distribute funds willy nilly to clubs without restrictions in place. The current or previous owners of those clubs would suck the money up and do a runner like they have done already. Increase the percentage the premier league but it rightly needs conditions. Shame Gary kept looping back to the Super League instead of putting the EFL on blast for allowing dodgy owners into our pyramid.

There should be a levy on the transfer market and wages, where the money trickles down to the lower leagues. On the flip side, academy output should be incentivised.

I hope that Steve's voting record matches his claimed stance. If football does not recapture the competitive nature that it once (in theory) had I fear I'll fall out of love with the sport, particularly at the higher levels. The last thing we need is a franchise model of the game, and we are already dangerously close to that. Also, that whole discussion about the solution being to take more from the bigger clubs was spot on. It's nonsense to suggest is can't be done. This was like the top 10% claiming that they couldn't be taxed more. A very inconvenient truth the bigger clubs pretend is impossible. If you want dodgy owners out, this may be the way to go. I'm glad Gary pushed Steve back a little on this nonsense.

Don’t think it’s unfair to say that when they talk about the ‘EFL’, they mean the Championship more often than not. Which is just creating another problem whereby the Championship begins to mirror the PL and the rest of football carries on with the same issues.
