Just wish he wouldn't try and shoehorn "woke" into it so much.
Totally agree with you big don. Realy like how he puts him at the spot on some questions.
He was wrong on certain accusations he tried to make. That's not a good interviewer. Several times scudamore had to tell him he is completely wrong and exxagerating on how the premier league is run.

It's like the old classic Bertie Auld story when talking to Tiny Wharton (the ref)...He asked Wharton what would happen if he called him a bastard. Wharton replied that he’d send him off. Gary this is another great initiative. I've worked in the media for over 40 years and no former player uses his voice more effectively than you. Thanks for being a true defender of our sport and our football club. John Gubba
He has only just started to flip his lid, back in 2005 and untill now he has turned a blind eye. Yes im glad he is voicing his concerns, but he should have done this from the day the glazers and the rest set foot into football.

Neville is a brilliant interviewer, and to think that's not his primary skillset. Just think how different this conversation would be if Piers Morgan was interviewing: interruptions at every turn, imposing his view onto Scudamore, and trying to unfairly corner him. Neville lets them speak and it's wonderful.
Shame he left. You can see exactly why he was so good at his job in how he handled the tough questions. Didn't dodge one question. Gave his logic and opinion on each brilliantly.

These overlap interviews are amazingly in-depth. Gary Neville asks the questions we all want asked. And it's perfect.
This is one of the most interesting interviews I've ever watched. Not a dull moment.
This guy is very interesting, if he had a podcast I'd be very interested to listen. There's too many ex footballers around thinking they know everything just because they used to kick a ball around.

Richard has my full respect. Extremely well composed, accurate in all his answers and honestly he brings the side to the table that you can easily forget. Neville asked some good questions and some emotionally charged and somewhat narrowed questions, but all were answered properly and respectfully. Top tier CEO

He was incredibly impressive in this interview…broke down Gary’s questions one by one and gave well reasoned explanations for why the business of football is as it is

This was … electric. You just don’t see fierce debate these days on TV without it descending into a sort of contest of emotions, but here it was, and done with integrity and intelligence.
The wider Culture should be taking notice of this.
I like Gary Neville. Never ever thought I'd hear myself say that back in Gary's playing days, but since he hung up his boots we can now see the real him instead of this fabricated image of hate that we tend to build up about other team's players due to rivalry. He did very well in this interview.

Gary Neville conducts a great interview with no lame questions. Richard Scudamore is absolutely brilliant. I couldn't disagree with any of his core beliefs. That said, I do honestly think that more must be done to make it absolutely clear to non-English club buyers that regardless of their up-front and subsequent investments, they will never have the power to change the nature of English football...period! If that takes regulatory change so be it. Compelling clubs to what owners believe are unrealistic or unreasonable revenue sharing is ultimately counter-productive and would fail long term. Let me finally emhasize that framing every disagreement with Adam Smith's free market as one between capitalism versus socialism is the worst sort of reductionist thinking. As an American living in California it's not unreasonable for me to say that if the past 40 years have taught Americans anything its that capitalism, if left unregulated, will consume itself. The trick is not to over regulate to the point of suffocating competition. In the US, Milton Friedman's inane free market ideology has wrecked US social cohesion and destroyed the delicate relationship between government and the govered. Sadly, we've done our damndest to drag the rest of the world down our experimental rabbit hole. In doing so, we've ignored lessons that should have been learned from 19th century conditions both here and in UK: greed is not a good think in a society that seeks to promote democracy.

The irony of hearing Neville talk about ffp and financial equality in football. Paying players way over the odds with $alford. Strikers on £5k a week in the conference a few years ago. He talks about managers needing more time to build a style of play and a team.....he goes through 3 managers in a year. He's not wrong in what he's saying but he's a hypocrite.

Gary Neville never discusses the elephant in the room: The ratio of turnover to player wages being 1: 0.9, which is far too high. Until salary limits are introduced as a % of turnover, say 65%, then we'll be having the same conversation in 10 years time. I can't listen to Gary anymore on the issue of PBP/Super League until he discusses the fact that excessive player wages eating into turnover as the driving factor for the big clubs perpetually seeking extra revenue. He's dodging the main issue. Carragher same, never discusses excessive player wages taken from clubs turnover

it doesn’t limit the amount any one player can earn it limits the total salary bill of all players and I’d assume staff to how much revenue you make, if you make 100 million then you can spend 65 million annually in the OP’s suggested percentage, you can spread that salary as you like just as long as you don’t go over that 65 million.

Good to see someone push back robustly to the idea that you just keep chucking money at the lower leagues. I don't know what the answer is but it was a very thoughtful interview.
Why were you glad to see push back particularly if you don't know what the answer is?
If the question is "How do you increase participation at the grass roots level of football? Or quite a few other questions a possible good answer is to spread the PL wealth around a bit more evenly. Look what lottery money has done to GB Olympic medal totals, its absurd how many more medals GB wins now compered to before.
@@jasperlawrence5361 TeamGB undertook an analysis to identify the most promising sports to invest in order to get a medal return on investment and ruthlessly funded those at the expense of others. If you like the TeamGB model, that would lead to the opposite of what you advocate for and we'd end up with fewer clubs albeit with better facilities. Maybe there are too many clubs chasing too little money. My point is that how you spend money is as important as how much is spent but often that part of the discussion gets lost. As i don't know what the answer is, i found it useful to hear a response from the other side.

I would like to see more money to enable people to play football, saving lower league clubs doesn't appeal to me but it might to others. We don't currently have a mechanism for soaking the PL as we do for distributing Lottery money, do we?

Richard Scudamore taught me more about football in this hours than anyone else. I didn't know about him until now, but he is brilliant!
I like him. He has a good brain - sure he has to, to go on and have the influence he'd had.
And boy! I needed that his advice to the young entrepreneur: 'don't be too driven/ambitious..there will be disappointment(s)'
Really love listening to Gary. I'm actually mainly a rugby fan but he's one of the most incisive and intelligent commentators in sport. Seems like a great bloke too. Really enjoyed this and look forward to more.

Hmmm some of the stuff he said he gets very emotional about and said some horrible stuff about people and some of the comments lol
I do like Neville, which is something I thought I'd never say as a City fan. But to me, when he starts going on about the lower league clubs not getting enough money compared to the premier league, is a bit disingenuous to me, given he's an owner of the lower league club. Why shouldn't the clubs that generated the lion share of the revenue get the lion share of the money.

@@mickellwoolf2441 I think he's more likely out of the ones you've named, there's been some stories floating about after the whole E.S.L debacle that he was against it and that's why he's stepped down from his role he may or may not be behind those stories trying to gain some good p.r but if that is the case I think he would be more inclined to do an interview like this after he has officially left his role, I just think it would be interesting to hear his side and also the challenges from a chief exec point of view of one of the biggest clubs in the world & of course with Gary of all people wouldn't go easy on him with the questioning, might get some interesting stuff out of him.

With regards to distribution of money I think Scudamore is spot on, in literally everything he says. Where he is out of touch is what Gary touched on with fans being treated as consumer and customers, ticket prices etc

Well I think we'd have less world class players if we paid lower wages than other top flights. And that lower ticket prices will lead to lower available funds for wages.
We have no god given human right to the world's best players. We didn't have in the 90s. We had Chris Sutton being a top striker vs his equivalent today of Watkins or Ings being a lower mid table starter.

Gary kept the interview to a singular topic, English football/ English football teams. A conversation on world wide FIFA and subordinate corruption is a whole other conversation. That said Scudamore could handle. Not a knock on Gary, but Scudamore can handle anything Gary can throw at him. Scudamore has been handling tough questions through the media for at least as many years as Gary played footie.

One must say: wow! First of all Mr. Neville is such a delight in terms of interviewing. He has developed an open, fresh approach to talking in a natural and honest way with people. It’s not as much an interview as it is a proper conversation but with proper and, at times, difficult questions. He doesn’t come over as a staged interviewer. He is an authentic and clever journalist of a kind but at the same time a real person. I’ve grown very fond of his ways. As a Liverpool member it’s not even weird. His work is amazing. One has to love his podcasts and this Overlap programme is absolutely brilliant! I’d pay for this. Monthly. It’s great insights. Gary Neville has really become an unmissable source on football. Richard Scudamore is a massively interesting man, too. His approach to learning is something one must wholeheartedly agree with. It was an absolute pleasure to watch this and it could have gone on for another hour without ever being boring. Fantastic work! Glad this sort of educational and inspiring material is out there. Love Gary even though I'm a Liverpool fan, I think he's great and I love his passion for football. I actually think Richard gave some fair responses to Gary's questions and I think I agree with Richard regarding the distribution of wealth. Great interview.
I think a massive redistribution will cripple the strength of big teams in Europe, and lowering the league's standard. Neville acts as if the league is in a bubble, only competing against one another.
As an Irishman who loved watching Gary Neville Not just because he was 1 of the best in the world in the right back position after Parker who was an excellent player also but this channel and the way Neville questions these lads is excellent.Keep up the good work Gary.

I think Richard understands economics in a very sophisticated manner, and Gary is not quite on his level - that's why Gary want's outside regulation and why Richard is fine with current regulation and self-actualization of clubs.
That's the reality and how economic works, super league was created in the first place to offset the economic and financial impact that Covid had to the industry and was to catered to the fans desired to watch matches with big names in high frequency and eventually buy high profile player. Big clubs themselves don't like the current UCL because of UEFA monopoly eventhough they are just an organizer and take a huge chunk of the money. Without the big clubs, nobody wants to watch the UCL at all. That's the fact, period. Sure football without fans is nothing. But without big money and great names associated with it, these "entitled" football fans won't watch it at all with a few exceptions being the locals.
Great insight into the man who drove the Premier league supercar to the heights it is at now. I feel Gary and Richard have the same respect and views on the football pyramid system. Richards is driven by passion, experience and knowledge whereas Garys is driven by passion, heart and the desire to protect all interests. Ultimately the same ethos of a fair and moral deal for all clubs. Ten stars Mr Neville.

so rarely seen these days. But so important for the two people sitting across from one another feeling the willingness to be open and honest. I'm sure that

Gary is probably the smartest most forward thinking ex-footballer has ever been, you can see his passion for the game, I understand revenue and business is important but this guy only cares about revenue and profit. The fact remains that if the fan keeps picking up the tab for everything something will have to give!

Great first interview and love Gary's style. When discussing why he was against an independent regulator Richard made the analogy of "grocery shops/tesco etc aren't regulated". Sorry Richard but they are by consumer law. Football needs non-biased financial and infrastructure regulation in the UK. I think there needs to 100% be an honest and fair discussion about the distribution of wealth and how the Premier League is at the top of an eco-system of player development, not working in isolation. There needs to be checks and balances with regards to owner conduct beyond the fit and proper person's test that is robust and sincere. Ideally the premier league, football league and FA should all be under the auspices of parliamentary supervision with regards to regulations in conjunction with FIFA/UEFA rules. This is about safeguarding the future of clubs and the structure of the game for generations to come. Owners of clubs are merely custodians and whilst I am not against profit, I am against mis-management and sadly the current state of affairs has led to the top clubs in England being run out of self interest and not for the good of the game. Their is no reason why clubs can't make money within a fair and ethical framework that protect's their long term sustainable future as well as that of the game's.
