Somehow this episode sounds like a national geographic documentary observing the subject in its natural environment :) the food she makes seems so healthy!
Cracked me out laughing when Paolo's like sneaking in the corner talking about this video sponsor while his wife Maiko's eating lunch! 🤣 He's really in a work mode in his own house featuring his lovely wife. 🤣
Don't feel bad about your 'massive plate'. If you combine all her small dishes/plates onto one plate, it would be a massive plate too. The breakfast bowl, particularly, had a lot of items in it. If you separately platted the eggs, rice, beans, seaweed, fruit and yogurt, on one plate, the plate would look massive as well. It's just organized very cute and more pleasing to the eyes, so people don't notice the actual amount of food being eaten. But you are correct, many cultures have one meat and 2 or 3 larger sides on one massive plate, while an Asian meal will consist of multiple meats and include 7 or 8 smaller sides put on different plates. It's the presentation that makes the difference; you may be eating the same amount or even a lesser amount of food.
@@phocian I get what you mean about the total amount of food, but different dishes provide different nutrients. We think about different colors of food to present and stuff, and one reason is for visual pleasure, but another reason is because we know that different colors tend to give different types of nutrients. The only healthy food she ate for breakfast was the eggs. The rest are carbs and sugar. The Natto, or fermented soybeans are also full of carbs and fiber (which is indigestable). Although the fermentation process reduced the amount of anti-nutrients, but they are still present in the food.

I’m obsessed with the organization and cleanliness. Everything seems right out of Marie Kondo’s playbook. Her portions are well-controlled and the ratios make perfect sense. OCD heaven 😍
Surprising how many packaging or industrial food is used for a day. Almost everything comes from a package, dressing, sauces, cheese, fish…. Even the morning coffee is not brewed, just a legion of bottles in the fridge. I prefer the mediterranean way of cook and buy the product.
Most of the food my wife cooks is from scratch, including all the vegetables which are from local farms, the miso she made , the fish is fresh etc. I lived on the Island of Crete for a year. While there is plenty of fresh food and ingredients it's not much different from Japanese in terms of fresh food.
@@gordonbgraham i am from the mediterranean area... i know how it is, but i dont talked about Freshness, what i mean is that we buy fish from local stores and it is raw and not "industrial" packaged, mostly wax-paper wrapping the food directly when you order and the same with vegetables or other foods, no precutting or already prepared. Here she is eating "fresh" but each small piece is packaged in individual portions (Natto, fish, vegetables already cutted, etc..), thats not usual in Greece, italy, spain...
@@cgmcgmcgmcgmcgm She’s in Tokyo. We’re surrounded by small farms that have produce stands. There is freshly made soba noodles, people make their own miso, and the fish is freshly caught etc.
Japan has the longest list of food additives out of any countries in the world, some of which are considered carcinogenic and generally unhealthy, why do you think the food looks so good?
I'm just shocked at the amount of plastic used. Especially single use plastic. It's amazing to see that Japan is still very much riddled with it. For some reason i thought it'd be a more environmentally friendly country. Is this common in most japanese households? When she opens the fridge the sea of plastic is really all I can focus on.
unfortunately yes, japan uses a hella ton of plastic in pretty much everything since they prioritize convenience in general, asian countries arent as concerned about eco friendliness as the west
@dot my dude, I am asian (chinese) and can confirm that china (makes up a large majority of asia) also thinks this way and if not, even worse. public trash cans are overflowing with plastic bags and bottles, shreds of plastic littering the sidewalks, you have to buy water in plastic jugs because the tap water is not safe to drink, etc. it’s pretty bad on a side note, i did develop constant coughing and got allergic to dairy for the few months when i stayed there, so thats something lmao
I had strong David Attenborough vibes hahaha! Especially when you had the shot behind the plant looking over your wife’s shoulder… and your nearly silent voice… we’re just watching your wife chilling in her natural environment. Really wonderful to see how your wife prepares and eats her food. Can we see one where we observe a typical day in Wolfie’s life?
I have a love hate relationship with Natto. I’d been trying it because it is supposed to be good for you and I have to be in the mood for it but I also haven’t found one that I like a ton either..

Her meals are very well balanced and look very tasty! I am often guilty of relying on conbini meals for breakfast and lunch, especially on work days, and when I get home, the only thing I cook myself is dinner. Weekends are the only time I can cook each meal for myself, but sometimes I splurge and go out to eat!
OMG, i love how she put shirasu in the onigiri! We used to live in Kugenuma Kaigan (near Enoshima) where everyone eats shirasu. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find shirasu here on the east coast USA
I want to have dinner with Maiko!!!! Everything she prepared looks AMAZING and makes me hungry. UGH--Americans eat too much fat and carbohydrates. I admire so much about Japanese culture--I hope to visit Japan some day. Thank you, Maiko, for your lovely cooking and thank you, Paolo, for your wonderful videos! Love from America!
Yay! I was so looking forward to this video! My takeaways.... she puts care and thought into her meals even if it's just for her and she's at home. It's a far cry from eating a Lean Cuisine on the couch. I believe you said she lived in the USA at one point. I'm curious how her meals changed when living here. I imagine she had to do without many products she's used to being readily available in Japan. I'd love a video where she shows us how to make a few easy recipes with ingredients we can readily get here!
It really depends where in the US. Here in urban California, there are Japanese grocery stores. Plus 99 Ranch Market has Japanese food (altho not as much) and even Safeways in many areas will carry things I've only seen in Japan.
@@brittanyherm9942 I live in the UK and as I don't live in a big city Japanese ingredients are limited especially if you want to buy them in bulk! I get my mirin/soy/rice vinegar and rice from Amazon as I also have to deal with less packaging too

I couldn't help wonder what Paolo eats. Surely after all that time in Japan, he also eats at least some of the same food. Or when he's not making a video of Maiko eating, is he out going to some American based place like McD's or KFC? LOL!
I highly doubt this is what she eats everyday. She is being filmed so duh you gonna show you eat perfect healthy foods when in reality you skip meals or eat something quickly put together especially when you are a parent.

Great acting Maiko! I imagine you must have laughed more than a few times while Paolo was taping you and you had to make it look like he was not there 😁
As someone who works in the plastics industry; it's horrific and typical. We waste more today than we did yesterday, despite knowing that it does damage our home.
it's part of the culture, in Japan, packaging is seen as an integral part of the product experience rather than just a way of containing a product. Shoppers value and expect high quality packaging.
I had to laugh at all the cans of coffee in the fridge 😆 I became a fan of them from traveling to Japan on business over the years (a lot of my food there comes from konbinis :-) Her natto looked so yummy, I miss it here in the US! When I first tasted it I hated everything about it, but a Japanese friend challenged me, saying that if I ate it every day for two weeks, I wouldn’t be able to live without it. So I tried doing it, and somewhere about a week and a half in, it suddenly tasted good! 😮 It was odd in that the change was so sudden, it went from kinda-yucky to tasty overnight, with very little in-between :-)

I would love if Maiko does some cooking videos of different meals she makes. I'm always trying to eat more Japanese food but struggle to make up a whole menu
this🙌
Love the amount of effort put into making a healthy breakfast.
Makes me reconsider my current breakfast.
The only healthy food she ate for breakfast was the eggs. The rest are carbs and sugar. The Natto, or fermented soybeans are also full of carbs and fiber (which is indigestable). Although the fermentation process reduced the amount of anti-nutrients, but they are still present in the food.
@@titiung carbs are good. fiber is also good. theres two types of fiber: solube and insoluble. You need both of them. Seaweed is also extremely nutritious. You clearly dont know much about nutrition
@@Novafan No, carbs are NOT essential, and are NOT good. You have been brainwashed, in fact everyone has been for the past decades. Fiber and indigestible and too much fiber can cause constipation. If you wanna talk about what food is truly nutrition, it's animal meat and animal fat.
@@titiung did i ever say carbs are essential? they're completely fine. stop with your stupid pseudoscience
@@Novafan natoo and miso has a lot of protein, and a lot of different vitamines. Natto is recommend in Europe to prevent osteoporosis, and also facilitate the digestion.

@@gordonbgraham He was talking about the packaging, bad for the earth.

@M simp
she made that soo effortlessly!! I need more cooking videos from your wife please
Woooow man! Japanese dishes besides being healthy are also beautiful to see, they look like art to me. Cheers guys!
This is why East Asians stay young longer than the rest of the world. Eat healthy!
Japan has the longest list of food additives out of any countries in the world, some of which are considered carcinogenic and generally unhealthy, why do you think the food looks so good?
Agreed .. the amount of MSG, colouring and preservatives in Japanese snacks!!!
@@doriswaddington2418 MSG isn't that bad for you in moderation.....
@@bababamooo906 yeah...plus most walk to get everywhere.
I'm just shocked at the amount of plastic used. Especially single use plastic. It's amazing to see that Japan is still very much riddled with it. For some reason i thought it'd be a more environmentally friendly country. Is this common in most japanese households? When she opens the fridge the sea of plastic is really all I can focus on.
unfortunately yes, japan uses a hella ton of plastic in pretty much everything since they prioritize convenience
in general, asian countries arent as concerned about eco friendliness as the west
Go away liberal
Yes shocking amount of plastic
@dot my dude, I am asian (chinese) and can confirm that china (makes up a large majority of asia) also thinks this way and if not, even worse. public trash cans are overflowing with plastic bags and bottles, shreds of plastic littering the sidewalks, you have to buy water in plastic jugs because the tap water is not safe to drink, etc. it’s pretty bad
on a side note, i did develop constant coughing and got allergic to dairy for the few months when i stayed there, so thats something lmao
Yes. And I rarely saw people using reusable bags for shopping.
All I know is that I'm afraid to try Nato. But I'm happy to see how much she values nutritious foods. Good for their children.
I have a love hate relationship with Natto. I’d been trying it because it is supposed to be good for you and I have to be in the mood for it but I also haven’t found one that I like a ton either..
This was very fun and yet unique and different than the usual video which is so cool. A great video to see a slice of Maiko's daily routine~ You guys have a great weekend! :D
I like how in the beginning he says my "japanese" wife like he has one from every nation lmao
Ah yes, a wife
I’d love to have one some day
You'll get one like everyone else, not a big deal.
You could get luck or have a great personality. Or just be fit and have money and you're guaranteed to get one regardless of how attractive your face is.
@@Woeisme2 Tbh you don't want a partner just because of the visuals, won't make you happy long-term^^

I appreciate the vid. I have a couple of those premade coffees that she started the video with in my fridge and realized I have no idea how to serve it. I've been meaning to try it soon so good thing I saw this!

The downside of having an Asian wife is the constant rotten egg smell and slimy food.
This differs from your usual take, but this is SO good! My wive and I can’t help but laugh a lot watching this video, given Maiko is acting like one being observed. This is educating and yet very entertaining! Keep it up Paolo and Maiko!
Maiko's got it right: she sticks to small portions but packs them full of nutrition.
Her meals are so meticulously prepared as well as beautiful to look at.
Yeah, but you know she doesn't eat like that every day. They probably chose those dishes just for the vid content...lol
You are a very fortunate man to have such a wonderful wife and family. 😊💗🙏✌️💪
OMG, i love how she put shirasu in the onigiri! We used to live in Kugenuma Kaigan (near Enoshima) where everyone eats shirasu. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find shirasu here on the east coast USA
Thank YOU so much, Paolo and lovely Maiko! You have made a cute, funny and yet very informative video. LOVE IT! ❤

You should definitely do more Japanese home cooking type videos!
Yes please do, a Japanese cooking channel 👍🏼😝
Wow this was so relaxing...I could watch for hours and slowly fall asleep. I love it!

It probably is not, usually. Of course you put in more effort when you are filmed

@@Bugge5001 Of course it's their main type but what can you do? They probably had a lot of A Day in the Life filming scheduled that had to be cancelled. Really interesting. The only thing I found shocking is the amount of plastic waste a single person can generate. So much prepackaged food 😱
Dont talk about the dark side, you're speaking of the truth they don't want to hear.
As someone who works in the plastics industry; it's horrific and typical. We waste more today than we did yesterday, despite knowing that it does damage our home.
Japan is particularly wasteful a out this, the package has so many plastic layers.....
it's part of the culture, in Japan, packaging is seen as an integral part of the product experience rather than just a way of containing a product. Shoppers value and expect high quality packaging.

I had to laugh at all the cans of coffee in the fridge 😆 I became a fan of them from traveling to Japan on business over the years (a lot of my food there comes from konbinis :-)
Her natto looked so yummy, I miss it here in the US!
