You mentioned that you had been looking for the grave of Robbie Ross. Actually, you found it. Ross had had a niche made for himself inside Wilde's tomb and requested that he be buried there. While he died in 1918, his request wasn't granted until 1950. So, the two of them are buried together.

23gizmo32 Robbie took to heart something Wilde once said to him: “Robbie, dear, when the Last Trump sounds, I shall turn to you and whisper “Let is pretend we do not hear it!”

Jordan thank you so much for this ! It was beautifully done. I watched the “Lillie” series & fell in love with the character of Oscar portrayed by Peter Egan. Oscar dared to be different back then & those who couldn’t handle it. I don’t understand about the leaves. I tried to zoom into the picture to see Oscar but I’m not sure if I did see him. It brought tears to my eyes as well as the bullying he took before he went to prison. Thank you also for showing us his resting place. The world back then wasn’t ready for Oscar. He paved the way for the lifestyle of those who prefer it. It took well over 100 years after his passing before accepting those who are different changed. Oscar was an original which will be er be duplicated. Here is to Oscar……❤

The Irish have produced FOUR Nobel laureates in Literature .
Firstly , George Bernard Shaw, then William Butler Yeats , Samuel Beckett
    and finally Seamus Heaney .
Alfred Nobel's great prize was initiated in 1901 , shortly after Oscar Wilde's death in 1900.
Had Wilde lived , he certainly would have certainly been awarded a Nobel Laureate .
Truly , an extraordinary human being & a towering literary figure .

Thank you for the tribute you paid to one of the greatest English-language writers ever, Oscar Wilde. I just read - for the umpteenth time - the only novella he ever wrote "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and that work is so good that it is actually a pity that, apart from countless beautiful poems and wonderful plays, he only wrote one novella. The great aesthete who did not avoid sarcasm but embraced it as a gem.

I was able to visit the grave in the late 1990's and in the early 2000's. There was no glass around the grave then. The only graffiti I saw on the tombstone was the lipstick prints of queens who would apply a thick layer and kiss the sculpture on the stone, mostly on the genitals.

People used to put on lipstick then kiss the grave, which damages the stone over time.
Back when I went to see the grave the glass was already in place, but there where also lipstick kisses on the glass. It *is* defacing but on the other hand there's a good chance he would have been surprised to know he was still THAT popular a century later

As a long time Wilde fan, I must say you have outdone yourself with this great video. Your passion for and understanding of this great man comes through.....no small feat in a mere 30 minute video. ALSO, you did find Robbie Ross' resting place and did not realize it! When he had the monument designed, Ross had a small niche created just large enough for an urn. When he died, he was cremated and his ashes were interred in the niche......so Ross and Wilde are together for eternity.

Thanks for the tour of Oscar Wilde's gravesite its one place I wanted to see in Paris. I also wanted visit James M. Barrie's historical places like Kensington Gardens and Oscar Wilde's historical places in London England. I have read alot about Oscar WIlde's fall from grace on both sides of the argument and side with Robert Ross. Even Oscar Wilde blamed Bosie in the censored parts of his book De Profundus, Oscar Wilde shouldn't have sued for libel and walked away from Bosie a spoiled brat who unknowingly lead Oscar Wilde into a trap his father setup purposely. I think Oscar Wilde should have gone to France to avoid prosecution but became a martyr instead a man ahead of his time. It's ironic now that Oscar Wilde is in the poets corner. I think in England Oscar Wilde's reputation is being restored since more people understand what happened to him was unfair.

I visited in 2010, back then, It was covered with visitors' lipstick prints which I like. They give the grave so much characters and I think Wilde would approve of the lip prints. I hate how they have destroyed the 'decoration' . I had no idea they put glass over the grave until I watched your video. I hate it. I am so lucky that I visited it when it's so free and so close to the grave.

Great stuff my man!! I just had to tell someone this that happenned to me on Friday. I have always heard his name. But for some reason Friday afternoon around 2pm I looked him up and watched the BBC documentary and movie "Wilde" and at the end of the Doc I see that he died 118yrs ago Friday from Cerebal Meningitis, something I beat after a month in the hospital when I was 4. I am 40 now. Woke up this morning and listening to his bio audiobook and find out he died at 2pm that day. Been having heath issues lately just got home and found out that my meningitis is back, but treatable. Crazy, there are things that we cannot understand going on this plane no doubt. Oscar Wilde buried 118 years ago today. God Bless You brother, stay safe.

This is phenomenal!! I'm going to France next year, because I can't leave this planet without having to take in some of that history! This was a great appetizer for anyone's future experience. So unfortunate that place wouldn't let you in... only 3 minutes late.. My heart was so disappointed for you. You handled it so well. You rock. Thanks!

Thank you so much! I've had a fascination with Oscar Wilde since the early 80's. I've read several biographies as well as all of his works and I agree with you on De Profundis. Excellent vlog! Side note--he was born in October (so was I), married in May (so was I), had two sons (me too, from that marriage and another son from my second marriage), and died in November (waiting to see about that lol!)

Awesome blog, glad to see you had a blast. I think the closest I felt to that was seeing Bowie's old flat in Berlin, its such an amazing feeling!
