That has to be one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world.

That's Chopin's 'muse' at the top, holding a broken lyre. Chopin's body is there, but his heart was removed and is in Warsaw. He was young, only 39 when he died of TB and pericarditis.

I'm in awe at this cemetery. It's beyond beautiful. No one is buried under ground. Every one has a tomb above ground and the beauty of the sculptures is amazing.
The flowers and gardens that are planted throughout, just blows me away.
You can't find this in the US.
I planted a beautiful garden around my son's grave here in Chico, CA., and was told to remove it for it took up too much room and made it hard for the workers to mow around the graves. smh

First off, I am sorry for the loss of your son.
It is a terrible pain to loose a child.
I buried my daughter in '88.
You'll find this style of cemetery in Louisiana, near the gulf coast, as the ground can become too damp to keep the coffins underground.
New Orleans is 1-10 ft under sea level, depending on where a person is located.
My favorite is the Lacosst Monument which can be found in Metairie Cemetery, New Orleans. Eugene Lacosst (1854 - 1915) was a hairdresser and obviously a very successful one.
Metairie contains the canopied sarcophagus of Delgado family (Issac Delgado 1839-1912, was a sugar and molasses merchant), the resting place of Josie Arlington 1864-1914 (Josie was a brothel madam), the Greek Temple-style containing the weeping angel for the Hyams family (Chapman Hyams 1838 - 1923, was a stockbroker, art collector and philanthropist), and many many more breathtaking sculptures, such as those located on "millionaires row".
Some other fascinating cemeteries are St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 (I no longer remember what the "No.1" represented).
When I lived in Lafayette, Louisiana, I spent many hours sitting on the steps of the tomb of Mary Bendel Falk (1839-1915). I will never have the correct words to describe this sculpture. Mary was a successful business woman and her son was Henri Bendel, who founded an upscale women's clothing line in NY, only closing a few years ago in '09.

A similar thing happened to me. I'm from Winnipeg Canada, but live in L.A. now. Harlequin is a successful Winnipeg band, whom my friends and I saw often at local bars in the 1980's and on, who lost their beloved bass player Rolf, a few years ago. Last year I took a vacation to Paris, and went to this cemetery to see Jim, Edith Piaf, Oscar, etc. While trying to find Jim's grave, I stopped at a fork in the paths and tried to locate his grave on my iphone. Down the path from me was a couple standing there talking, and they looked lost like me. The guy reminded me of a rocker -he had the messy black hair, black leather jacket, tight black jeans. I approached them, and found they were looking for Jim's grave, like me. We figured out the direction to go, and as we walked, we talked. Turns out the couple were Canadians, and the guy was a bass player, who had auditioned to be Harlequin's new bass player. It was strange that we both travelled to Paris from different parts , and we know the same people.

First off the story about Oscar Wilde is very sad in vlog #490, I was almost in tears hearing how he was humiliated in front of people and ended up begging for money. Second this vlog with Jim Morrison (one of my favorites) topped it off for me. The cemetery is so congested with head stones which kind of makes it unique but it seems like there's no room for anyone else to be laid to rest. Good job Jordan on another great vlog. Thank you...

Edith Piaf's grave looks entirely different, as well, but actually more elaborate. I spent the better part of a day up there, back then. Nice to revisit via UA-cam. Thank you! 👍

The next time you go there do not get off at Metro Pere LaChaise. Instead, get off at Metro station Gambetta and enter the cemetery from the rear entrance. Why? As you noticed when you were there, the cemetery is on a hill. By entering via the rear you get to tour the cemetery while walking downhill, not uphill.

@@DazewithJordantheLion - You were lucky when you visited Allan Kardec's tomb. His followers tend to loiter around the tomb making sure (politely) people don't photograph or shoot videos. They believe Kardec's soul is hovering above the tomb and feel photographs "take a little bit of his soul" away. As for the grave robbing; yes it happens like anywhere else but the empty structures we see on your videos are actually tiny chapels that were very popular 100+ years ago. Families (wealthier Catholic families) would place flowers and mementos inside the doors because it was like being "inside" a chapel. Bodies were not robbed. The items inside were robbed (gold jewelry, etc.) The kind elderly gentleman perhaps could not find the right English words to explain it. 100 years ago the locks on these tiny chapels worked but today, who knows. Homeless people sometimes sleep in them. I enjoy all of your videos.
