Yeah you would want to look for “rifled slugs” for smooth bore barrels. They have some rifling on the round itself that helps with accuracy. These and also the “sabot” slugs are likely designed for rifled shotgun barrels. Why use a rifled barrel shotgun instead of… idk a rifle? Who knows, honestly.

Hornady SST Sabot slugs. Flat out drops deer at 150 yards. Nothing discernable of a heart left. They drop, exhale and expire. Amazing rounds for a shotgun. Since they are Sabot rounds, you need to use a rifled shotgun barrel. Nothing exotic about them other than the range and power for a shotgun.

Sabot slugs, like the other guy said, are made for rifled barrels. What you want for a smooth bore are rifled foster slugs; they have “rifling” molded into the projectile and work rather well for standard white tail distances. (Always be sure to make sure you’ve got a proper choke for slugs as well, though with a shotgun like that I can’t imagine it’s not a cylinder bore)
@@bryantb3391 maybe? i don’t know. the main reason that foster slugs have those grooves is so that they’re safe to fire out of a choked barrel, the ‘rifling’ will swage down when you fire it through a modified choke or some other choke, allowing you to use them in a choked gun (to a certain point, wouldn’t recommend it will a full choke) without blowing the end of the barrel or the choke tube off
Decent shotgun wrong rounds, need foster slug or rifled slugs. Just a tip these are not exotic rounds either. Exotic would be flachete, dragons breath, gaucho rounds, ect. These are just a sabot slug through the wrong gun, if shooting through smooth bore will make round key hole or tumble because its not engaged to spin correctly.
Been using these in an 870 with rifled barrel and they’re amazing. Pricey. Hang on they will set you back but the accuracy and knock down are worth every penny… Dollar… few dollars per round.
Back in the 80's We had B.R.I slugs they were 30 years ahead of their time, even in our smooth bore guns they done excellent in a rifled barrel they would have been outstanding

That sabot slug is 100% designed to be used in rifled shotgun barrels. Many US states do NOT allow deer hunting with rifles and/ or bottle neck ctgs. It's even more restricted in many more countries, hence the Forster style / self.stabilizing slugs for smooth bored bbls. Quite often, rifled shotgun bbls + properly designed sabot slugs provide extended effective ranges. My very best 12ga rifled barrels are Hastings (Verney.Carron), Remington & Mossberg. Most rifled bbls are available w/ open rifle- style sights or cantilever rails for optics. We reloaders enjoy a vast range of options available from Ballistic Products, Svarog / Russian slug moulds + wads thru The Reloaders Network, etc, etc.
Ive shot sabot slugs from my smooth 20 gauge and they were accurate as all get out, winchester copper jacket, but yeah def wouldnt rely on it. Ill stick with Stars and Stripes rifled led slugs, shoot like a rifle!

The sxt slug will shoot 300 yards from a rifled barrel they were designed for deer hunters who live in shotgun country ( areas where rifles aren’t allowed )
I put down many deer with those. Before straightwall started becoming legal those rounds were the most common around here, and on every shelf. One of the faster factory slugs.

I have had those sabots exsplode on impact (on scapula and on the neck) and had to track 200+ yards with minium blood. I switched to federal trophy coppers, same shot placement and they go no further the 50 yards.
Well a shell that all black with a red tip in itself makes it looks badass and would probably be a selling point for me. Good thing they look efficient as hell lol.
A lot of rifle hunters dislike my Remington 887 12 gauge 2½" or 3" inch shells .w/slugs. They all use centerfire 30-06 or .270s. I used both and "Because" using a shotgun requires a hunter to be at a closer range, it's a drop'em dead no brainer a shotgun has 10x the fpe at 50 yds.
Shotgun slugs get progressively nastier as you get more exotic. I can't recall the name, but the machined copper ones - which splinter on impact into four secondary projectiles spiraling around a central penetrator - will utterly shred a block of dense ballistic gel like a bag of chainsaws (leaving copper fragments in each wound tract). And then there's *_Dragon's Breath_* - which are fucking insane..!

Out of a smoothbore, it's got to be Brenneke or the original sabots that were designed for smoothbores. Those modern sabots are squirelly if they aren't stabilized, but fantasyic on game when they are.
Had those about 10 to 15 yrs ago when they first came out. Vry accurate. I beleive and i could b wrong bht they drop only an inch at 100 yrds. Which if you know, you know.
They're far from exotic, i can find them at any sporting goods store here in ontario. But a sabot slug needs a rifled barrel to shoot right. Otherwise they'll tumble and accuracy can be spotty

I've fired these once 2 or 3 bucks a round but oh boy were they destructive even found the first round after fired I shot it through a few of those metal backed flat screens from the mid 2000s
