I have really fallen for SPARKY haha! I think with a little tlc, that engine will run very nicely. It has been running very well considering it was left in a barn for 30+ years! I'd always happily donate towards the project as well, it would be great to have another early Allegro on the road!👍
"if I can be bothered"? Please do...I'd come and give you a hand. I tentatively suggested to my wife that we purchase an Allegro... You can imagine how that went!
Think you'll have a lot more 5hr sessions with this one Alex. I was watching that jack thinking don't fall off it while that front wheel is turning 😂. Structure looks as weak as a kitten, best of luck if you keep going with this one...how's the neighbours 😂
The structure isnt that bad. Sure its crispy at the sill ends, and needs a patch here and there. What it does suffer with is bad rust to the roof sadly. Not sure where this is going yet..but I'm gonna give it a go!
Hope you good at welding as anything made by British Leyland Austin & rover rust and rot really bad if I had a choice it would be a mini again or a marina but her don't look to bad it's just underneath you got to check over the A+engines and gearbox's just run for ever it just needs running and a service good ones sell around £2000 but have seen them sell for £500 good luck 👍
Judging by the smoke coming out of the back looks like it is burning a lot of oil? I wish you luck with it though, I had a couple of Allegro's, a 1500 LE in Tara Green and a 1500 Estate in red, both bought new in 1978.
Both wheels can rotate the same way as that would smash the differential. Surely near side wheel would turn backwards when only in reverse gear. Please use a rubber mallet to hit cast. Trying to start without fuel is not a good idea.
summat within the gearbox or mechanism might be seized after decades of misuse. isn't it worth dropping the gearbox to investigate? surely owners club might have a 2nd hand gearbox?
Hello Alex. I just watched the previous video. If the wheels are turning it must be stuck in a gear. Lets say 2nd. Lets say also the selector for 1st/2nd has become detached from the selector mechanism, and lets also say you can actually select 3rd and 4th. If all those maybes are right, then when you do select 3rd and 4th it effectively locks the gearbox solid so hence stalling the engine when in those gears. Lots of ifs buts and maybes but it is a scenario that would explain the behaviour you are seeing. It might be a zero cost fix but a full engine out, trans separation and teardown are not a simple undertaking. Judging by your feelings about the rest of the car I suspect having a gearbox problem is just another nail in the coffin. Shame. Mart.
@@AllThingsAlex Are you sure that the clutch plate isn't stuck/rusted to the flywheel? With it up on stands and the engine running fast jab on the brakes. Gear box in neutral. Is there an inspection hole in the bell housing that allows you to see the flywheel? You'd probably be able to see if the clutch is working
@AllThingsAlex think it could be the hydraulic clutch servo.not sure I think there hydraulic not cable operated you'll know more than me about them lol.
When cars run rich you get black smoke, with a hint of blue sometimes, even ones that have stood for ages normally will not smoke like that if there isnt an issue, looks like valve stem oil seals, or piston rings, its burning alot of oil, 🤔
Really enjoying the videos please don’t give up as SPARKY is already a YT star 👏
blowing a bit of white smoke, but man that sounds a good engine
Good old Sparky wants to live!! Keep going, it's all progress 👍
That runs really nicely!
Keep on persevering Alex! Sparky will reward you for it one day!!
Enjoyed that update Alex. Keep going with Sparky......if you can be bothered 😄. It was hot yesterday, even early morning.
New thermostat and flush with dishwasher detergent.Mechanic said do this on my old escort van and worked a treat.
I learnt to drive in a white one 1300 special. Cool car

@AllThingsAlex keep going Alex, getting it out of gear will boost motivation 💪 🤣👍
idler shaft needle bearings come out and smash the diff casing on them

At 13:00, I was waiting for you to whack it with a twig.

I would think a gearbox should be easy to get hold of they used these a series engines up until the 90s

Appears to select gears, but yes, engine stalls or fails to start whilst selecting 3rd or 4th. Also jams if you put it into reverse.

Course you can be bothered....its a challenge and he wants to live.
Is the gearstick actually stuck in gear .
No, appears to select gears, but gets stuck whilst selecting reverse.

Looks like its burning alot of oil, lots of blue/white smoke, project smokey? 🙈
It was running very rich, also first time its ran in decades, so might just be clearing itself. An oil change and some more use may help?

I found my allegro kept going through clutch plates until I was told you need to use spaces on it to get it setup right.
