    - attachment to outcomes (desire) is the reason for unhappiness
    - attachment can be good for achieving worldly success but never happiness
    - you can be detached from attachment by accepting that you have opened yourself up to a world of joy and a world of hurt (i.e. willingly taken on responsibility)
    - you cannot control the outcomes
    - you can only control your actions and you can always do the right thing
    - dialectical behavioral therapy: understanding that good and bad can coexist at the same time (non-duality)
    - there's no such thing as good or bad, it is created by our mind
    - there's just what happens, and how we interpret this determines our happiness
    - grounding focuses your mind to embrace things that are physically unpleasant, and then they no longer control you
    - you do not have freedom if you live a life running away from bad and running towards good
    - the way you relate to things you do not have in life determines your happiness (comparison)
    - happiness comes from inner tranquility in the absence of stimuli or even in the presence of positive or negative stimuli
    - inner tranquility never goes away, we just get distracted from it, which is why meditation is important
    - the more grounded and centered we are, the less stressed and anxious we will be (like the moment of beginning to write a test when you detach because there is nothing more you can do anymore)
    - start by not responding to external things that shape your behavior (learn to tolerate discomfort and be tranquil within it)
    - when your view is more long term you will be more resilient to set backs
    - everybody else is controlling how you think and feel, but you are the one ultimately in control
    - reframe and reexamine your beliefs that are making you unhappy
    - the more unaware you are of a thought process, the more it will control you
    - awareness is crucial for control
    - just being aware and observing weakens automatic thought patterns and changes your reality, this is willpower

    what i find most refreshing about dr k is that he unapologetically speaks about the spiritual wellbeing of an individual as a matter of fact. he doesn't try to dress it up with clinical terms and academia-speak to sound more impressive, obscure, or empirical. he plainly speaks of a person's overall wellbeing in terms that we all already understand. some people sam-harris and jordan-petersen the frameworks and terminologies so much, they end up arguing convoluted semantics and nobody benefits from the simple wisdom of the actual topic, itself

    IMO, social media has created echo chambers. People are becoming intolerant to opinions they disagree with, and afraid to voice their authentic opinions. Hence, loneliness in today's times.

      Absolutely

    • @BlastedDays
      @BlastedDays 2 місяці тому +9

      I think it just magnified the problem. It seems like people have always found echo chambers or just gravitated to like minds. Many people just want to live in their bubbles, and a few others are truly interested in objective reality and truth. The internet just magnified it, i don't believe it actually changed the rate of people who want to stay in their echo chambers.

    • @hunter_69_69
      @hunter_69_69 2 місяці тому +14

      @@BlastedDays Yes, I think the internet has, unfortunately, made echo chambers more accessible. I think it's nice when people hear all perspectives on an issue. I personally follow news channels all across the political spectrum (MSNBC, CNN, FOX, NewsMax).

    • @BlastedDays
      @BlastedDays 2 місяці тому +4

      It sure would be a more peaceful world if we all gave that effort. I couldn't imagine taking sides on any issue. Truth doesn't have a side, and neither does science. Unfortunately, the people in their echo chambers can't hear this and would likely close their ears and "lalalala i can't hear you." Even though I am cognizant of my biases, it is difficult not to find myself in an echo from time to time. How and why do we get people to see outside their purview? Could it bring more peace? Or would we just be like the future athiest in southpark arguing over what to call ourselves?

    • @kylebanks13
      @kylebanks13 2 місяці тому +6

      Social media did not cause this problem It just enhanced and exposed it. People have always lived in echo chambers a lot of it used to just happen in person and we would never hear about it.

I love Dr. K’s approach to answering questions even in the most sensitive topics. Made it all the way to the end, been subscribed since something like 40k or so? Loved this conversation so much, it's always a pleasure listening to Dr. K speaking so passionately about something that doesn't get the attention it deserves in our world. Also found the meditation thing very entertaining. Jack was trying so hard to not move that he forgot to relax his muscles and let all the tension out of his body so his brow was furrowed the whole time.

    The moment he asked “How do people know if they’re truly happy” I immediately knew Dr.K’s possible reaction! As someone who’s had to overcome grief from losing my parents & job in a span of 4yrs during the pandemic and had to pick myself back up. I learned that happiness is SUBJECTIVE and a lot of strong MINDSET goes into it as I’ve experienced with my siblings after we each had to come to terms with our parents death & find happiness again.
    I still struggle but I can say that I’m happy now but my siblings are still struggling with their happiness which I pray they find 🙏

    I'm a weird person. If I'm experiencing insomnia I'll use UA-cam interviews and speeches to drown out my own thoughts. It usually puts me right to sleep. This interview is too interesting and dr. K has me sitting like a child waiting for each word like a new piece of candy.

    • @criscutfry
      @criscutfry Місяць тому +1

      1. Stop labeling yourself and things you don't understand as weird. Weird has a negative connotation, and many of these quirks make up each person's unique personality.
      2. What you are experiencing is extremely common among many who are neurodivergent, like myself, having been diagnosed with ADHD! Many people use what is referred to as white noise to aid them in resting and achieving REM Sleep. As someone with ADHD, I am susceptible to chasing imaginary rabbits down rabbit holes; in other words, when I should be doing something, my mind is actively trying to distract me. So if I instead go somewhere like a cafe, lounge, or community hub, or I turn on a podcast or music or be among friends while I work on my college homework, my thoughts don't have as much of a chance to butt in. I already have some sound, activity, or conversations happening around us that we can tune in and out of as we please or need. It's the same with sleep; you choose your unique taste in what to have as your white noise. I hope that helps. These conversations that Dr. K has tend to be very helpful as well. You're learning about yourself, and it's helping you sleep-two birds, one stone.

    One thing I thought about while listening to this was the nature of teaching. It’s not for the faint-hearted. We try to predict all the outcomes when we plan and of course it rarely goes as planned. Unless you learn to go with the flow and to make do with what you have, you will be a VERY stressed teacher. I try to keep in mind that I can only control what I can control (my actions, as Dr. says) and not take the stress home. Easier said than done of course but when I take time to meditate on this, I do much better. It helps to frame things from a more balanced perspective when dealing with apathetic students or when trying to exercise discipline.

    I spent my entire life training my perception. I feel like I could explain it, and most people still wouldn't understand. For me an infj/p I enjoy challenging my views with new experiences in small doses. I've found the way I am able to help someone the most has been to take one of their view points that can have a negative connotation and change their perspective to center around a positive core idea or value. Seeing this effect help someone choose to make impactful decisions that improve their life and people around them, has been the power that has held my hand through life without me knowing for a majority of my life. I think it is a dangerous power and people aren't protected enough because they haven't had enough people and resources to prepare them. Thank you again and again Dr. K

Before I started to swept and mop the floor I had zero expectations so feeling this great contentment cause me to be thankful even happy with myself. I noticed the less I do the happier I feel. I also STOPPED chasing out-comes it was really a great experience to just be me without trying to prove anything to myself. I really love how Dr. Alok Kanojia explain things in this video great talk with all 3 of you so thank you so much.

    Hearing Dr. K speak about how much you can influence the world by helping just one person gave me so much hope. Just hearing someone who has seen and interacted with such a broad range of people be able to speak with so much empathy and hopefulness has really opened my perspective. The part about how children with terminal illnesses often don't get to make choices about the last year of their life got me fucked up 😢Thank you both so, so much for interviewing him and sharing his thoughts with us.
