  • Dr K is a psychiatrist, Harvard Medical School instructor, co-founder of Healthy GamerGG, Twitch streamer and a UA-camr.
    Humans face a predicament that has never been seen before, a massive overload of stimulation. The effect of constant exposure to social media, video games, and porn is not good, but thankfully Dr K has developed a ton of powerful ways to finally take back control of your attention.
    Expect to learn what social media is doing to our brains, how much we can attribute the mental health crisis to screens, why anxiety and depression are so prevalent, how to let emotions into your life more, why therapy so often sucks for men, why high profile UA-camrs are quitting, how to separate your self-worth from your accomplishments and much more...

      11:00 You are stating completely that emotions are not valid. That is a dangerous and wrong statement. How does someone know LOVE if they ignore their emotions? It's not about turning off emotions. It's not about devaluing emotions. It's about learning with your emotions, and each person is different and so is their spectrum of emotions and you will never be able to write a book that "fixes" everyone's problems for them, nor will you ever be able to make a prescription medicine to "fix" their problems.
      I wish psychiatrists would understand this more. You're all looking creepy when you're trying to teach people to basically be mentally UNHEALTHY.

      The idea is not to kick someone when they are down. Benzos are fucked up and Jordan should have massive amounts of empathy for addicts because their struggles mirror his but he doesn't. He still exists in his shame bound persona. He is shameless because he is shameful. He needs to feel his shame in order to recognize his ego/false persona. Call it a moral grey area but humanity needs to awaken to its shame in a big way so they can be human. Where does war come from?

    • @kevinkurgansky4479
      @kevinkurgansky4479 Місяць тому

      @@HalfJapMarineare you implying and/or making the assertion that war comes as a result of (unrecognized / disowned) shame? Might be a gross simplification of multiple overlapping reasons as some are largely rooted in money and resources or control of ideology but yes if it’s ultimately a fragile ego state that’s running the show and captaining the ship, so to speak, then yes, I guess you can say that it’s ones shame that drives us to act out and/or kill / conquer. For some, there’s also a motivator for a “will to power” as Adlers psychology talks about. Whereas Freuds philosophy was a will to pleasure. And viktor frankls was a will to meaning. And they’re all right in their own way.

    Dr. K's insights on the impact of technology on our brains are spot on. A lesser-known tactic to combat the negative effects is to schedule "tech-free zones" in your day, where you intentionally avoid screens and stimulate your mind with activities like reading or engaging in face-to-face conversations. This can significantly improve focus and mental well-being.

    This has been a great eye opener of a podcast. My wife passed away at the height of the pandemic and seeking any help was really difficult. We were both 32 at the time and I had never really experienced loss or trauma before. I tried grief shares, therapy, and in the end the only thing that seemed to help was exercise. Grief is a very difficult reality. I wish I understood just how much It pulls mental, emotional, and physical resources from you. The term “Grief Brain” is a very real side effect. The tiredness you experience from the emotional rollercoaster. The constant effort to be present and not miles away in grief laden thoughts. The immediate burnout that sets in from the whirlwind of life events just experienced. Just hearing or reading this small paragraph would of helped me SO MUCH in understanding the monster that grief really is and the fallout it creates. I know men don't like to share or open up, trust me, as a young widower, its really really difficult to find anyone to relate too. If your going through something, people do care, your not alone, and love is really the only way out of your circumstances. Love for yourself, gratitude, and patience. Great work Chris and Healthy Gamer!

I realised I was getting addicted to my phone by 2021. It wasn't until Jan 2022 when I deleted my Twitter account, a month after my mother had died. I only watch certain UA-cam channels nowadays that I consider informative like Chris's channel, Jordan Peterson and some Christian channels. You guys are great. Thank you.

    Problem is eventually they come back, and its not like flipping a switch on; its like the emotional Dam you built exploded and had a catastrophic failure. As a result the city of "good" emotions and things you enjoy or dont feel bothered by gets destroyed. Suddenly youre an adult now and the lack of shame and guilt has led you to a place where its very hard to get out, and now you ARE feeling the shame and guilt and things that make you feel that way are all around you.

    What a great episode! As someone who has had my first therapy session being a couples therapy session, with a female therapist, I can call myself lucky that she was extremely empathetic about how both my wife and I would be communicating and always making sure our points were mutually understood without giving any sort of judgement. What I especially liked was her ability to "translate" what we said and how we said it into what the other person needed to hear or even see. But to Dr K's point, we had spoken to 2 other couples therapists before that we had to pass on as it just didn't feel right. I only wish we had done it sooner (we are all good, but as Dr. K said, I was first against it as I thought we could handle it without the help of a therapist)... Fascinating stuff and I can only encourage more people to go into couples therapy!

    Yesterday I was at the store and I got sad and pissed all in one because some POS put a rotisserie chicken on a regular shelf, letting it go bad. It upset me that a whole chicken was killed and some turd thought it ok to just waste this good food. I took it to the front and then later was mad at myself that I didn't just buy it and feed it to my dogs. I realize my emotions are too much, because they linger, at the same time, I don't want to be so detached that I don't give a damn about consideration and human kindnesses and most importantly GRATEFULNESS. I definitely needed this episode 😅😅

      "It is never *THE ISSUE(the chicken)* that is your issue, *YOUR ISSUE(the anger)* is how you react and respond to the issue." - A course in Miracles
      Your issue is your anger, case in point; your usage of words like "some POS" , "some turd", "mad at myself" in the present tense illustrate that the anger is still with you and l bet it always has been before the chicken issue. I believe it was Jung who said our subconscious mind holds all our unresolved baggage which it tries to bring into our conscious mind to be resolved; and that one way it does this is through conflict (internal & external). The chicken scenario could very well be the conflict your subconscious self used to bring your anger issues to the surface of your conscious mind so that you could address them with a smaller conflict before/instead of a bigger conflict.
      Objectively nothing really gets wasted in this world because energy is never lost, it merely changes form. Thus, the chicken wasn't objectively a waste of "good food" because as biological organisms decompose, they become "good food" to other organisms and useful manure to the earth... When you look at the idea of "waste" in this way, you begin to see that your anger wasn't even rational in the grand scheme of reality/nature. If you address & resolve the internal anger directly, external situations won't trigger what is not there(in you). If you don't address it, it will colour ALL your experiences, big and small... Food for thought

    • @MylezNevison
      @MylezNevison Місяць тому +4

      @@andreaspapakanellou3804 Bare in mind that conscientiousness could very well be a dressed up form of Control. The human ego often dresses up its need for/coping mechanism of control in positive & palatable terminology... What's the litmus test for this? It's fear, for wherever the ego seeks to control, there is always fear (which can manifest/be expressed in the form of anger).

    the part about men being socialized to not be very “emotional” (except for anger) is so true. i assume that is because anger is seen as an emotion that portrays (on a surface level) strength, power, and aggressiveness, unlike the “female” emotions that many of us associate with vulnerability, weakness, and dependence. this made me realize that perhaps a lot of men turn their sadness, shame, insecurity, etc. into anger since it’s the only emotion that has been accepted and expected for men to express for so long. the other emotions get suppressed, but they have to be released somehow, so they’re released as anger.

    I understand why we're studying the effects of social media on children and teens directly, but more needs to be said about the effects of having parents who are addicted to these apps and online "clout".
    For the first time, we'll have a cohort of new adults (turning 18) who will have had their very first moments on earth documented in a Facebook status update (and almost every significant moment thereafter). Imagine how different that person's relationship with social media, the internet and the notion of privacy is compared to an 80/90s kids like the majority of this audience.
