I on the other hand wish they will just forgo the DAP component of the m17 turns the rest into a portable amp, its been too long since the Q5s that they release a higher end portable amp.
I take the M17 with me all the time (with my FiiO FH9’s) it fits the inside pocket of my jacket with room to spare. Back in the 80’s the original Sony walkman and, in the 90’s, the Disk-man, were bigger and just as heavy. Hell, back in those days some people were walking about with massive Boom Boxes!
So yeah, this M17 is perfectly portable for old timers like me.
Also, when EHM is enabled, the balanced output with a 300Ω load gives a 100% boost from 250mw to 500mw.
M17 + FH9 is SUCH a damn nice combo, I feel spoiled when I listen to them.
The M17 is about the size of Battery Banks a lot of people lug witht them anyway, so it's perfectly portable in my mind. Also 10 Hours of music playbadck is what you get out of most phones anyway, so considering it's driving massive headphones 10 hours is impressive!
Yup. It's basically as portable and usable as everything people are already carrying but also a lot more powerful- it's able to power big boy studio headphones not just some earbuds.
And you have two SD slots each able to use 2TB cards for 4TB of storage, so literally thousands of high bitrate WAV files, not stinky MP3, or tens of thousands of FLAC files. I'd say it's worth it.
Great review Zeos, I have been waiting for you to review this! It is chunky but small enough to throw into a backpack which allowed me to untether from my desk when I am working and enjoy audiophile grade music anywhere. Based on my experience, It can even drive HE6SEv2 slightly better than K9Pro (nonESS) but it gets hot!

Between my fiio m7, m9 and m11, I like the m11 the most since the m9 died out of nowhere and it stopped holding a charge and I even contacted fiio thru email and I never got a response, my m7 and m11 still work however the m11 still performs the same from the day I bought it until now. I switched to the usb audio player pro instead of the fiio music player even though I like the fiio ui better than usb audio player pro. I sync my music with windows media monkey but I can't get the album artwork to show up on both fiio and usb appa music player. I even got the google play store to work with the m11.

No need for the fan in my experience. I run this beast in DC mode all the time while lazily laying on my couch and yes it gets a bit hot. But not excessively so. Not more than my Fiio M15 anyway.
Sound quality is amazing in DC mode. Never thought this could make such a difference. Paired with my Sony Z1R this is pure bliss.

Hi, I'll try with you as well, amybe you can give it a shot if you have the noodles for it: does this beast support video out over USB-C? That could make it a very interesting media consumption device, not only for audio, but also for video. Although, technically you could use Chromacast, but why not use direct HDMI? With the audio (all the Dolby goodness and more) coming straight outta the chungus. Provided that the video player (local or streaming) gets any benefits of the hardware in this piece of brick.
Also wondering if this could be used for music recording, either as a standalone all-in-one device, or as the amp sitting between the instrument and the actual recording device.

Bought it at a great discount on Amazon. Used, but it was new! I have the M11 plus ess and this is a beast! Pushes my Audeze LCD-XC's much better. Wear 501's and it fits in my pocket with no problems. Like the bigger screen for old eyes.
Z - before you put the M17 into a yard sale, wouldn’t it make more sense for the M17 to replace the Shanling EM5 as a better “all-in-one”? 🤷🏻♂️

Eventually the battery will need to be replaced. What has Fiio provided for this inevitability because I doubt that your local pc/phone repair shop will have this battery in stock.

Hello. I am the owner of a Fiio M17 and we get along well. I carry it with me in a belt bag that fits around my waist. To control the volume, switching tracks and play/pause modes, I use a bluetooth mini remote controller, which I wear on my wrist, or smart watch.Thanks for the good reviews.
Comment for the algorithm. Not too many channels that I like before I even watch; this is one of those channels.
Does it support apple music in bitperfect mode?
Z feels like my olds Alfa Romeo Milano Quadrifoglio when it was sunny and cool worked like a charm any other day it was shit.

For their price (and prowess) I would rather get a lower priced mid-range DAP and invest in a good external Amp/DAC. Of course that would mean lugging multiple devices but I would think a DAP + Amp/DAC combo would offer more flexibility and more upgrade options (not that you would need to upgrade anytime soon if you have the M17).

Why not hook it up to powered speakers? You'd be saving a crazy amount of space and money at that point.

That's a problem with 99% of DAPs. I truly believe a 250 dollars with a good dongle is much more practical than a DAP.

It's simple...this is a Digital Audio player..not a portable music player despite it's overall looks.

Something attractive about this device. But it’s so damn big.
You will almost be cheaper off getting a K9 pro, ifi go blue and a killer of a phone as your source. This dap really is in a niche market for what it does, it’s price and it’s drawbacks.

You get used to the size quick… i take mine everywhere i go. Just throw it in one of you backpack side pocket and use Fiio link on your phone to control it!!! The sound of that thing worth the trade, for me at least.

It is technically portable in the same way my 100Ib gaming PC is portable lol
The problem I have with these DAPs is that they come with an android version that is already outdated and they'll just become sluggish bricks like smartphones especially because they're android (I am an android user myself, but I can't say anything good about their longevity). To me personally portable DACs is the way to go, but I do understand why people like these.
My v30 still performs fine. As just a portable for all my music

I’m the guy on the train with 2 battery packs, iPhone 12 mini coupled to a TEAC HA-P90SD, and a Stax SR-001 modified or a Hifiman Arya or a Modified Grado GS-1000. Just to listen to Qobuz(Way better sound quality) or Tidal. Or the internal storage with DSD and FLAC files. Battery packs are 20.000mAh and 25.600 mAh. At Home I prefer my Stax SRM1/MKII Mjölnir modified. With Stax Lambda Signature. Even prefer that over the SRM-007/TII with Stax SR-007A
