My dad had 'Cross Purposes' , 'Headless Cross' & the compilation album 'The Sabbath Stones' I gew up listening to these in the 90's and they shaped me into the musician I am now. Cross Purposes was always my favourite, however The Sabbath Stones had 3 songs from Tyr and I loved each one of them. I later discovered the stuff with Ozzy, but that was never my cup of tea, especially when you grew up listening to a singer like Tony Martin.
Tyr is an absolutely MAGNIFICENT album. My 6th favourite Sabbath album after Sabbath Bloody Sabbarh, Heaven and Hell, Master of Reality and Mob Rules. It should be held up as the masterpiece it is….and always was.
I had lost my interest inSabbath during this period it’s really sad because when I listen to it now I think it’s amazing and that Tony Martin is a great singer that do Sabbath great justice ✌️🙌
I'm SO glad life was simple for me back then. If I saw a Sabbath or Iommi album I bought it instantly. The IRS CDs must be collectors' items now. And people laughed at me for not "growing up."
I thought the concept, music, clarity and atmospheric quality made it a much better album than Headless Cross. And I've been a Sabbath fan for a very...long...time.
my favorite sabbath album by far, i would pat tony martin on the back for this entire album and place a crown on him for the amount of excellence this album had and brought yet got so unceremoniously canned.
A friend and I decided to go see this tour, at Wolves Civic, back in the day when you could buy tickets at the venue on the night. My mate didn't show. Waiting outside near me, however, was our local radio rock DJ. He had two complimentary tix, but whoever he had invited didn't show. So he gave me one of the tickets and in I went. The sixth and last time I saw Cozy play, having seen him with Rainbow, MSG and Whitesnake. I have a good quality boot of the night, a great show..such a shame this line up didn't have the success it deserved.
I agree, and these 'reviewers' are a joke. Tyr was way better in quality than Headless Cross. Most Sabbath fans should be aware of this. The whole album was pretty damn good.
Headless Cross and TYR are the two best albums of the Tony Martin era of Sabbath. Eternal Idol was an album written for Gillen and I will always feel that way. Cross Purposes was a strange one and I am waiting for 31MAY2024 to listen to Forbidden. I have heard much negative reviews upon that last album of the Martin era and am kinda worried about listening to it until I hear what Iommi intended it to sound as...too bad Cozy isn't around to assist him in that endeavor. Cheers, -a.?/MCD
When Tony Martin was on, he was fuggin incredible. Too bad he often struggled live recreating what he laid down in the studio. Each time I saw Sabbath in LA during his tenure he was really good, but not as good as he is on these Swedish show clips. I'm looking forward to the reissues!
I used to think that about Cozy Powell. A powerhouse but quite simple and solid. However, quite recently I heard some other stuff that Cozy did (at this moment I cannot remember what it was) and was gobsmacked when I heard it was him playing. He was much more technical and gifted than I realised. Wish I could remember what it was I heard. Made me look at Cozy in a different way drum wise. Having said that he has played on some of my favourite albums, by Rainbow and Schenker to mention just 2. His early single, Na Na Na with "Hammer" is one of my favourite singles of the 70's RIP Cozy

I just wish Tony martin had joined sabbath , instead of Ian gillan . At that time , they was still highly regarded by fans and journalists. Honestly think , they would of carried on from Dio success
21:47 I don't agree with that guy, who claims Tyr had just a couple of good songs, "Anno Mundi" and "Sabbath stones". There's also "The law maker" and there's "Jerusalem", "Valhalla" and "Feels good to me" which are a bit soft but all are absolutely fantastic, beautiful songs. Out of the 8 songs only the last song is weak. Tyr is a masterpiece.
The Osbournes locked Tony down with the Sabbath name after filing a lawsuit against Iommi years ago. That's why when they reformed with Dio they couldn't call themselves 'Black Sabbath' but 'Heaven and Hell' instead. The same reason remixing Tony Martin's album has become such a chore.
Tony Iommi is in remission from cancer treatments and is not touring again. Him and Ozzy Osborne are fifty fifty split ownership of the Black Sabbath name and no plan of recording under the Sabbath name.
Martin is the only Sabbath singer who has massive respect for every other era. Ozzy talked shit. Dio talked shit. Martin, though, is like “Ozzy and Dio are great!”.
How I dig this album. A strange sabbath album though, with all those harmonies going, but definitely a jewel among the BS albums. Only gripe is the production, with a bit low mixed guitars
@@EdwardBaggettEdtrader as much as I love Tony Iommi..... good. I'm glad it didn't get much play. It feels like it was just tacked on, forced in a place it just doesn't fit. Other than that, the record Tyr by a band I call The Eternal Idol is great stuff.
Keyboards yes, but added after the initial songs had been written. As a secondary musical score. During HC and TYR the keyboards were more prominent both in the writing and recording.
@@EdwardBaggettEdtraderGeoffrey Woodruffe played keyboards for Sabbath on the Sabotage tour and the Technical Ecstasy album and tour. Don Airey provides keyboards on the Never Say Die album along with Rick Wakeman playing for pints on Sabra Cadabra.

Stoked for this box set!! A lot of new (to me) Sabbath to explore!
Love that record. "Anno Mundi" has such a great riff. The Tony Martin era is vastly underrated.
RIP Cozy Powell. You were the greatest drummer I've ever heard
Loved the first three albums with Tony Martin on vocals 🤘👍
So underrated…….

Eddie, great stuff as usual! Thank you for promoting the most underrated parts of Black Sabbath's history and Metal in general.
thank you for watching!!!
Saw the tour. Great show at Manchester Apollo, Tony Martin was incredible
Tony Martin is a great singer on all the albums he did with Sabbath! He's a rock singer! For fuck sake! And great on the ballads! ✌️😎
TYSM for the TLC you put in this rockumentary

An absolutely awesome special. I'm a fanatic of all Sabbath's albums. But this is a rare special.
Thank you for making these excellent documentaries that cover an under examined period 🤙

TYR - a mega release from Iommi and Co

Those who can't... review. Yea, I agree they are tough on the album. But they give some balance and speak for those that don't like the album.

The problem is he lacked a good vocal technique at the time. Then during the cross purposes tour he caught a lung infection and continued to tour.
Listen to the bootleg Manchester 89 (radio broadcast) or others from the dates in England from that tour and the show in Vienna.
Martin was great .
Very dry climate in California, probably bad for the brummie
Neil Murray is a great bass player. Cozy Powell the most powerful drummer. I liked him better then bonham.not as busy. Simple and solid.

Mr. Colin "Cozy Powell" Trevor Flokins 😢
Mr. Geoffrey James Nicholls 😢
Cross purposes was a great 👍 album
Another take away from this is how Jeff Nichols backup vocal added so much to the performance.
Like Michael in Van Helen. They could have been a three piece!!!
Awesome thank you
The doofus music critics in this doc act like they haven’t even listened to TYR… I doubt they did.

The guitars sound better on vinyl than the cds/tapes.
Hell yea thank you
Thank you for watching
I think that Tony Martin has forgotten Rick Wakeman, Geoff Woodruff, Don Airey. All appeared on Sabbath alums up to 1978.
I think he is meaning full keyboards on all tracks. They were add-ins later and not part of the initial song writing.
This is a great record, it's strange with a sabbath tag on it, but when you really just listen to it, it's a great record except for the ballad.
And I say that about the ballad because I don't like them. They're tropes that were way over played
Bad thing is this ballad didn't even get that much air play nor TV time.

Cross purposes is fu###ng OUTSTANDING , never mentioned !

it would have been great if you could have credited where you took the interviews from...
They were credited. Did you see the titles under them?
Look at the 2minute 8second mark for example.
Who was the second guitarist shown onstage in the clip?
Geoff Nichols played keyboards but also some back up guitar and vocals.
Brian May from Queen also guests on some concerts from the tour

Headless Cross is about Satan and the occult, not English history. Martin should know, he wrote the lyrics himself!
