Dio was a great singer, but the first six Sabbath albums and the first two Ozzy solo albums are miles better than anything Dio did.

This is the Sabbath album I return to when I need a Sabbath fix. Other Sabbath albums may have had better songs but there was always filler. H&H bangs from beginning to end.

Heaven & Hell was not only a great album but Dio pushed the band as well as himself and they made great music after he had done great things in
9:07 Rainbow and eventually his own band DIO.
Ozzy has never written a lyric or piece of music with Sabbath as well as on his own.
Ozzy has been ok and was the voice of Sabbath in the early years but Dio revived a dead band.

I was 18 years old and graduating high school when this album dropped. I had low expectations for this project even though I was a fan of Ronnie's singing in Rainbow. It really depended on the material. This combination could deliver if the songs were good. If not, it would have been a minor footnote to their career. Boy, did they deliver. The first song from the new line up that I heard on the radio was Neon Nights and I was blown away. I went and bought the album right away. Ronnie breathed new life in to a group that could have easily been wasting away in the discount bin. Although my feeling, to this day, is that Black Sabbath in its truest form is the original four members, I loved this era. The early 80s seemed to rejuvenate hard rock and shake off the disco and punk of the late 70s. It was a great time to go to concerts for a few bucks and see your heroes. Too bad Ronnie and Sabbath didn't last long.

Yeah it would have been nice if they had lasted into the 90’s but I’ll take the 3 albums we have. I’m a huge fan of the Ozzy era but appreciate that they were reinvigorated with Ronnie. 👍👍

The "truest form" was a dead end and the final two albums with Ozzy was proof of that. That basic blues based stuff was unsophisticated and boring compared to the Dio stuff.

  • @markrago7217

Black Sabbath at their most melodic, nimble, and cohesive. Still plenty heavy, but so much more musical and optimistic sounding with Ronnie reinvigorating the band. This is one of my personal favorite albums by any band.

I can only think of a few times where a band replaced a singer and not only did they remain the same but became a totally different group ie. AC/DC - Black in Black, Black Flag - Damaged and Genesis - A Trick of the Tail.
Growing up listening to Detroit Radio, I heard the title track at least once a day. It was a mini-adventure listening to that song. It was slow then fast, classical then progressive, melodic then heavy. Dio fit in perfectly I believe. And yet you didn't think it was Elf or Rainbow even though his vocals were exactly the same. A masterpiece of British Rock. 5 star presentation Jeff!

First off, I really liked the video montage you did for Children of the Sea. Very cool. And what was the weird fire pits of hell silent film clips? Incredible. I’ll be honest, I didn’t buy this album when it first came out. I was young and couldn’t buy everything obviously. But I got Mob Rules when it came out and then went back and bought H&H. I love both of these albums so much. They definitely crushed the last two albums Sabbath made before these, but that being said, I love all the early Sabbath and don’t normally compare the two lineups. I love them both. I agree that Die Young sounds like early Iron Maiden. Both coming out about same time. I love this video and will probably watch again. More Bo please.

Nothing against Ozzy at all, but Dio brought a vocal range to this album that makes it shine like a star. This is probably my all time favorite Sabbath album, and I always get push back from other fans of the band when I say that. That said, I'll admit, I like way more of Ozzy's solo career after Sabbath than Ronnie's even though Holy Diver is on par with anything Ozzy ever did solo (including the Randy Rhoades albums in my opinion).

Funny fact about Ronnie Dio. He hated the music Sabbath played and wasn’t sure about joining forces with them. Rainbow and Deep Purple styled music was more his thing. Well when his wife Wendy told him
They only had $800 left in then bank. She told him he better wise up and appreciate Sabbaths style
Of Music. 😂. He wised up and we are all the better for it. 🤘 we lucky they only had $800 in the bank or we may have never known how good this band could
    Have been again.

It’s been said he disliked signing the Ozzy songs because Ozzy mostly sang with the riff. Not against it. He felt Ozzy Sabbath was cavemen not very musically intelligent. I agree with him to a certain extent and if Sabbath had one weakness it was Ozzy always singing with the riff. Makes it seem nursery rhyme at times. RJD had a gift of always singing across or vs the riff. So yeah Ronnie hated doing the Ozzy stuff. And you can feel it on Live Evil. I think he does a competent job but his handling of songs such as Iron man and war pigs are pretty cringe worthy. Also said he was happy as smitten when Heaven and Hell formed and they didn’t feel obligated anymore to play the Ozzy material. I don’t blame him. Already was tough enough replacing Ozz but having to put up with Ozzy’s crap and stage antics towards him was tasteless at best. I’m glad Ronnie fought back in his 1981
Interview. Ronnie may of been small in stature but his mind was brilliant and was a very intelligent and eloquently spoken man. That guy could read the phone book to me and I would stilll be enthralled 😂😂😂😂

Btw I met the man twice. In ‘94 and ‘09. Backstage both times. 30 min or so. Asked him a few questions and was always glad to give the answers. I asked him about Ritchie Blackmore and he gave me about a 5 min response. In short he basically said the man was a brilliant musician but a shit human being who didn’t value his fans. One thing about RJD was he appreciated his fans and you could feel it was genuine. If any indication of how he treated a nobody like myself is his true self then yes he loved the fans to death. Also asked him about how he felt about Sabbaths music before he joined. He told me the 800$ in the bank story and he had to suck it up. But he was determined to make Sabbath much different from the Ozzy years. And he definitely succeeded. Say what you want about the Dio years but I felt he made Tony and Geezer think outside their box a bit more. Tony became more
Musical for sure. His solos I think are much more musical than during the Ozz years. I like both Marks of Sabbath and beyond that too but Dio
Really got the ball rolling he could speak to Iommi more in musical terms since he was a guitar player himself. All Ozzy did was hum melodies he didn’t play any instruments except a hack job at. harmonica lol. Ok. Sorry about the ramble but most of my information is from meeting the man himself. So in the maybe combined 60 or so minutes I met him between the 2 times he was always open and honest. Very rare in rock and roll. I’ve met some asshole rock stars too. One within Sabbath but I won’t reveal his name as he’s still one of my idols. You can probably guess who he is 😂

Anyone who thinks Sabbath started losing the plot after Vol. 4, needs to listen to Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage. Those were Sabbath's 3 best albums.

Ronnie James Dio the saviour of Bla ck Sabbath was a master-stroke by Tony lommi, new direction, new energy & new found power, not to mention a new proven producer in Martin Birch Heaven & Hell sounds as crisp & relevant now as the day it was made , even lommi's playing style had changed, all the planets realigned for Sabbath Mkll, my only complaint is in my opinion is Bills drums sound a bit generic & it could have done with a couple more songs on it, otherwise it was a classic foundation stone for a new decade.

Iron Maiden aren't worth the time of day, guilty of making the same album at least 20 times over & their fans kept falling for it & made those morons millionaires.

I never heard anyone say heaven and hell is not really sabbath, where did you hear that? New singer is all. Like born again. I have heard seventh star was meant to be a solo album. The Martin albums are black sabbath too.

Just my opinion, but Evil Woman , reminds me of some of the same riffs , as on ''Never Say Die'' recordings and the Rainbow song Long Live Rock And Roll....so , just a straight ahead rock and roll song....I find it to be the weakest of the 8 songs !!!

zeppelin lost a drummer and they split... Sabbath changed a frontman and sky rocketed... This is for those who claim that zeppelin where a great band... Iommi will forever be the most proficient musician light years ahead than page... He can be put next to May, Blackmore, Rhoades and Eddie Van Halen...
