While the general trend is to redeem or rehabilitate a villain in order to ship them with a hero, my guilty pleasure is corrupting a hero to ship them with a villain. Let them be bad, and let them enjoy it.

I fucking love false accusation. Like B is accused of doing something extremely terrible, everyone including A mistreats B as a result, and then it's revealed B did nothing wrong so everyone is guilty and AAAA I haven't found any fics like that yet tho pls help

My aunts best friend met her husband because when they were at another friends wedding, she wasn’t paying attention and got clocked in the head with the bouquet. Bouquets are surprisingly heavy and the bride overshot the group. Clocked her right in the face. Guy who was a a friend of a friend of the groom helped her up and they were both hysterically laughing. Long story short they got married like two years later.
I'd say one of my guilty pleasure is when the mc is like super strong and everything goes their way even if other characters are not always aware of but in the end the struggle was never real and we always knew. I feel like it's guilty bc it's the easy way, a bit like deus ex machina. But it's comforting My other guilty pleasure are probably mainly smut things
One of my guilty pleasures is reading a hero being badass while being tortured, them being rescued at some point, and then them just breaking down to their best friend/significant other. I don't know, there's something so cathartic to me about not breaking while being hella traumatized, and then breaking down later with a safe person due to their care and kindness. Like a hammer couldn't break them, but a feather did.
Other more general ones tho would be Character Study, Fix-it, Missing Scene, One-Sided Relationship, No Romantic Relationship(s), Lab AUs (or just AUs where the characters are all stuck in a facility and have to work together to escape while dark secrets come to light), etc.
nah cuz honestly same I love really dark topics, and I pretty much NEVER read the tags or trigger warnings cuz I like having most of them be a surprise, since I am very much not triggered by them lmao
My guilty pleasure is con noncon. I love when either one pauses for a moment to make sure everything is ok with their partner or when they use the safe word and there's a 180 change in personality (usually turning softer). Its the trust between the partners

Hybrid AUs!! Characters with wings, with claws, with tails-characters that can purr, can growl, can trill. It can add a lot of show-dont-tell emotions and a lot of unique situations, like wing preening, animalistic courting, nesting, instinctual fears, instinctual likes, different settings based on hybrid needs, etc, etc. I also just think it’s really cute 😅
Having Cleópatra and a few Magical Girls ("Madoka Magica" universe) turn into creatures based on the Egyptian goddess Sekhmet (vampiric looking). Does that count as Hybrid AU ?
Outsider POVs! I love seeing someone who isn’t in the main ship or the main group of characters watching them interact and being baffled or wildly misinterpreting what’s happening - for example coworkers thinking two characters (who the audience knows are married) hate each other bc they bicker constantly? Hell yeah good shit right there Also, playfighting scenes. Idk I just think they’re really sweet. Especially if one (or more) of the characters is usually very stoic or reserved, it’s heartwarming to see their playful side come out.
OH I LOVE THESE!!! One example of a fic I’ve seen this in was when the characters in the ship were teachers and it was in the perspective of the students, who were betting on whether or not they were married or just good friends
I ADORE outsider fics, especially in secret world settings (e.g. hp, pjo, etc.) or when a character is often misinterpreted by others/acts differently than they are and the outsider gains a sudden understanding of the character. It's SO good. Bonus if it's social media fic/ buzzfeed unsolved episode format, those are always really fun
Outsider (human) POV for supernatural characters It’s so much fun! They usually make great funny one-shots, and can really shine a light on the suspension of disbelief in those shows.

Player x innocent/inexperienced, "im not good enough or right for this person...", 5+1 fics, oneshots, & identity reveal tropes will literally have me on a choke hold😭😭💀
My guilty pleasure is sickfics/whump fics that are just as fluffy and saccharine as they are angsty, like GIVE ME the bold stoic character who’s always brave and respectable and absolutely floor them with a virus or injury to the point where they have no choice but to rely on their friends and accept help, and the illness needs to be BAD in order for the help to feel satisfying - I’m talking bedridden, can’t sit up by themselves, need to be bridal carried to the hospital/car/bathroom, that’s some GOOD SHIT
I absolutely love those, but like on the verge of death, with stab wounds and gun shots and a hundred-degree fever but still somehow clinging to life and telling character b to put them down and let them walk themselves when they’re literally dying. Also the more determined and the more they bottle up their trauma, the better. Sorry I sound like a sadist 😅
One of my all-time favorites that I'm comfortable putting on the internet is temp character death. When they get revived and have trauma from the afterlife that nobody else understands. When their body has permanent side effects from being reanimated
I got into if from the dsmp fandom a few years ago, there's some rly good stuff about it in there. Also a good bit in the HermitCraft fandom. And the traffic light smps. And harry potter? For some reason? Idk man, I've even seen a few good ones in the ATLA fandom lol
I just posted a fic that had something similar to this. It wasn't a full-on body death, but it was almost there, and definitely a death of self that had never been experienced by anyone else. Half the fic is main character struggling with the fact no one understands what he went through, and how no one can help him because the unique trauma and side effects the situation left behind.

I can’t get over the description Red gives in of Dracula in Netflixes Castlevania, where Dracula is being all big and scary and this woman basically bangs his door down and he’s still trying to be all big and scary and she just is _savage_ and basically goes “of course everyone is afraid of you! You never leave, and you’re a terrible host. Offer me tea, a place to sit, and light a fire.” And you can _see_ that man (uh, vampire) going “oh… oh no… OH NO I LIKE HER.” In like… the opening scenes, xD
I think this trope also works best when both characters would _never_ get together otherwise… Like I’ve read multiple featuring such pollen when it comes to Mo Ran and Chu Wanning from _Erha,_ because at the point of the story where fans call Mo Ran “Mo Ran 2.0” (if you know, you know), he loves and cherishes and yearns for Chu Wanning but could never bear to touch him due to ~reasons™️~ and then Chu Wanning needs it because he’s had a crush on Mo Ran forever but he’s too reticent to ever fully try and face those feelings. So whenever there’s that pining + angst involved of both of them thinking the other doesn’t actually want this and that they’re the bad ones for enjoying it even though they’re helping the other party resolve an issue… Yeah. It makes for some compelling reading. 👀
Ikr? Like... Maybe this comes from working in publishing, but a 20k story is a novella, I'd break that into a minimum of 4 chapters. Probably more like 6-8, 5000 word chapters feel too long. As you say, a oneshot being 2-8k words seems right.
Tooth rotting fluff. Gosh darn it, I want my uber fluffy fics and see my favorite characters be sweet on each other. Alternatively, those chapters where characters realize "maybe have feelings for each other" after one saves the other. Is it cheesy? Yeah. But man, I squeal like a kid every time. Addenum: Friend to All Children characters. They produce the absolute sweetest moments in Fanfiction too.
My hot take is that y/n, reader or OC fics can be good but you have to make that inserted character just as insane as they exist in your head. If you try and make them palatable to others or so cool that no one can say that they aren’t then you aren’t doing it right. I can tell when you’re having fun with it and that means I’ll have fun too
honestly, agreed. its not entirely the same but sort of applicable; a while ago, i played a mobile game where the main character was supposed to be you, and i liked it a LOT more than other games that were similar because the main character felt like an actual person. like a normal, average person. it didnt feel like the creators were trying too hard to pander to everyone. they were just funny and charismatic (assuming youre not playing with the intention to be a dick, anyway lol) and it was oddly immersive. you have to think of a "player" or "reader" character as, to an extent, their own character, otherwise i dont think it works. its impossible to apply to everyone so theres no point in trying so hard, because people can tell when youre trying to pander and they automatically dont like it.
My guilty pleasure is definitely whump or heavy angst, I’ve read 100k+ fanfics that are about one character just not having a good time and I love them. Most of the time I prefer them to have a happy ending but sometimes I do appreciate when it gets worse and just never get better, sometimes the happy ending just feels unrealistic and the unhappy ending just scratches that masochistic urge in my brain that makes me wanna read stuff that will leave me crying curled into a ball at the end
This except I will go absolutely insane if it doesn’t have a happy ending It’s unrealistic if the trauma just ups and leaves, but I definitely need the comfort to my hurt/comfort, the recovery & healing fic to my whump & angst fic
I also have an unexplained love for whump fics! They're just...idk, so weirdly satisfying. I like angst too, buuut in moderation, if a fic is nothing but angst, I get super burnt out and just feel empty by the end. But if a fic has just the right amount, hooooo, that is the SHIT, lemme tell ya 👌😂

im a huuuge sucker for enemies to lovers, i don't even know how to explain it. the possibilities for tension in moments where they're fighting and then get like super close up to each other is just UUGHH i love it. also the still bickering like an old couple when they actually get together is very silly to me. maybe that makes me basic, idk.
Thissssss omg I crave enemies to lovers. Like the potential arguments and roasting is so great. Like the tension is soooo real. The toxic potential is good. And then having your heart melt at the end and the heart ache during and laughter at the start makes for a perfect fic
Non-sexual omegaverse. I love the scenting, marking, etc. (animalistic behaviour) depicted on characters. The spicy stuff is more of a bonus. Its interesting to see how authors approach it without relying on the smut. Though unfortunately, its a rare find in the fandoms im in 😢😢😢
I also like non-sexual omegaverse!!! Especially when it explores how the secondary genders affect their way of life, aaaa there’s so much weird world building that has potential to be played out really well???

My guilty pleasure is the hanahaki au where character A has it for character B and when they die, character B discovers their love too late and gets it. But they can't be cured cause character A is dead.

One thing that I found I like is a Mermaid/Mermaid Hunter or Fisherman fic. Like, I love the idea of Character A being part of a group of people who hunt mermaids, unusually unexperienced, but while alone, runs into one (Character B) for the first time and just has this moment of “Holy shit they’re beautiful, I can’t bring myself to hurt them“ and usually angst ensues with either the crew catching Character B, and Character A either having to save them and betray the people they work with, or realizing said people are awful and choosing to escape with Character B. Something about it gives so many opportunities for hurt and comfort and I love itt

Mine is either a villain needing to be comforted and getting that comfort or a villain playing a reverse and saving a character from someone meant to be a good guy… or similar, the lesser evil, same thing but with a greater evil. Yes, I do have issues.

Something I absolutely need more of in fanfiction is *recently* established relationship! I love the idea of two characters being like “okay I like you and you like me and we both know that. Cool. So what now?” I just love seeing the characters figure out how they work together as a couple, what each one likes in a romantic relationship, and learning more about each other.
getting together aus are like my fav thing on earth, but sometimes the little bit at the end of those fics where theyre finally together isnt enough and i craaave some established relationship to hit the spot
I personally love nightmare fanfics, especially when it’s a powerful being having a nightmare about losing the not powerful character. I also love immortal x mortal because of the pure angst potential.
Drunk confessions/drunk sex. I know it's problematic, but I don't care. It also enables characters acting dumb which amuses me. Sick/Injury fic. I like seeing characters being cared by someone they're secretly pining for, and this extends to mental health episodes too, not only physical health. Vampire AU. I was a goth kid who was also a massive weeb. Some things never change. Not a trope that I know if it's named, but I enjoy the authors inserting random knowledge about their hobbies/job/subject into the fic through the characters explaining it enthusiastically, because I like reading things that have been injected with the author's genuine desire to gush about things they think are cool even if they're not completely related to the characters or the fic. I read a fic years ago in which a character went out of her way to explain the specifics of rhythmic gymnastics' competitive scene and I loved the amount of research and care that went into that. Idk. Baby fics are cool too, Coley knows.
Drunk sex fics aren't necessarily problematic when both characters are drunk. Their reactions in the morning are always hilarious, especially since usually one of the characters is embarrassed, and the other one is glad it happened.
dude I actually love drunk sex/confessions fics- I don’t think it’s as problematic as some think, tbh? like, even if only on party is drunk, yes it can create a lot of distance and angst and I can definitely see how it makes people uncomfortable, but typically its not something the drunk person WANTED to happen. they couldn’t help it, and I love the idea of them feeling like shit over it and everything on both sides spirals and book angst and ehh maybe comfort but like. I love that and drunk confessions can be so.. yes?? like?? one character just gets drunk and casually confesses their love or makes a move on the other character and then the sober one panics trying to figure out their feelings about the situation? and typically in both cases the rink character might forget what happened depending how wasted they were, so the other one has an EXTRA struggle of how to process and go about telling them (or trying to avoid it altogether, but inevitably becoming distant and cold with the other and them to really knowing why bc they don’t remember the drunk incident)
9:26 I actually LOVE oneshots. idk why but just a simple story put in one little chapter is nice to me. especially because I don't have the time to read long epics so I'll only read one epic that i'm absolutely invested in at a time and then read tons of oneshots. There's tons of good oneshots out there

While I personally prefer long fics, I do sometimes read oneshots if I don't have time or don't feel like reading a long fic (or if I'm caught up on all the multichapter WIPs I've been reading).
Totally agree that sometimes you just don’t have the energy for a multi-chapter fic. Though, the thing I always find funny about one shots are the differences in length. I’ve seen some that are 500 words long, but I also saw one monster of a one shot that was 70,000+ words long XD. There are a ton of multi-chaptered fics that aren’t 70,000+ words long.
Omg yes, especially ridiculously long and/or on going fics, my ADHD could never (or I get hyperfixated on one very specific, extremely niche idea and find one fic about it lol)
26:31 Kidnapping is my favorite tag for a REASON. There’s just so much potential- you can have the kidnapped character’s POV and the rescuers POV or you can have just one. You can have a character kidnapped for 7 hours, a day, a week, a month, a year etc. then deal with their inevitable trauma in the aftermath. *whispers* when you add torture into the mix things can get reallll bad and it just makes the rescue even better. *whispers even quieter* or there doesn’t have to be a rescue at all Sry whumper here- I got excited when I saw that tag in the thumbnail :)
Time travel fix-it is one of my favorites and i wish there was more of it!!! Also characters watching the show. Which is rare and not easy to find cause it doesnt have a standardized tag. On the other hand its usually either way to long or really low quality. Still it has a small place in my heart.
I think it's becausee not aa lo tof people want to deal with that specific time paradox, of a future character being the very same cause for , idk, some technological improvement that makes them able to time travel in th efirst place or simply them being their own ancestor, or many other things that render something non-existent without the Paradox. I mean, tale the song of storms from Zelda Ocarina of time. It's self-contained so it's harmless, but where and when did it firstly begin?
I love time-travel fix-it , lately I'm obsessed with time travel fics with Harry Potter at the time of Voldemort in hogwarts!!¡!! I think I read all the finished ones I NEED MORE !!!¡, also time travel fix-it in the universe of Final fantasy 7 has me in a chokehold for more than 3 years..
The fact that Aziraphale sheltered Crowley under his wing in the first rainstorm…! And all these thousands of years later, Crowley’s talking about how sheltering from a sudden rain together is how people fall in love…! MY HEART STILL CAN’T HANDLE IT!!! 😭😭😭
Social media fics. Just seeing the world interact with your characters, whether they're well known or not, just always makes me appreciative of the characters. It's like I'm sluething on these characters by seeing what they say. It just adds so much. Like, you can play with what platform, the typing styles, usernames, profile pictures, group chats, memes the characters may or may not be aware of, the trends they try to keep up with or understand, just UGH, love it. It doesn't matter if it's based on recent events or just contained in a small section of the internet, I eat it up. I've been especially guilty of this when it comes to superhero characters in a more modern age... (COUGH, DC, COUGH, JUSTICE LEAGUE, COUGH COUGH, BATMAN, AND HIS PUBLIC PERSONA, COUGH COUGH COUGH.) Bonus: I once saw a fic where, out of spite and nagging from his team members, Bruce Wayne outbit Lex Luthor on buying Twitter-- which he then ended up improving. The author made a split universe where Bruce Wayne didn't try to buy Twitter at all, and Lex immediately made all sorts of changes. Like, changing Twitter to X and having people pay to verify they're humans. It was so silly, good thing that is entirely fictional :) Edit: Didn't know that Coley also has this guilty pleasure. YOU GET IT
I love the "celebrity × nobody" where essentially, the celebrity has to keep them secret because of publicity or something, and then they get feed up and show of their s/o to the world. And there are so many different ways to write them meeting each other, from bumping into them while disguised, too a literal meet and greet, its very fun
My worst one is child @buse 💀 Like spicifically past child @buse and then the @bused character is assuming that the people their with is going to hurt them. And then the miscommunication and the no comfort for forever until there is a whole comfort at the end. I think I read to many sbi and Tubbo fanfics

This, I both have that exact Same mind set (the automatic assumption that others are out to take advantage of me or hurt me) and love Fanfics that focus on the healing of trauma.
Sadistic psychopaths. Sadistic psychopaths. Sadistic psychopaths. Just the fact of one person having such an obsession with another that they'd take and hurt and go to great lengths to twist this person's mind up in exactly the way they want it. The fact of them enjoying the harm they cause. The complexities of the psychological damage and the creativity with the physical. The Stockholm Syndrome and toxic affection that would result. I could spend ages detailing this and why I love it.

Can’t believe I’m writing this, my absolute favorite guilty pleasure fic is any Non-sexual submission, any sort of power dynamic where one just absolutely treasures their SO, and also wants to control them. Tags that also fit, Dom/sun undertones and power dynamics. Some ships of mine just do not work for this so I haven’t read too many of them like that. I typically don’t enjoy reading smut, so maybe that’s where the non-sexual part comes from for me, or maybe it’s the fact I love descriptors of absolute trust and dependence that makes it an absolute win
Reincarnation trope is dope, especially when a character makes a promise to another character (or both of them do) that transcends lifetimes, memory and even fate itself.
Dark fanfiction tropes go brrr. Thank you for calming discussing the wholesome and not-so-wholesome aspects of fanfic that're all fine to explore in the fictional context. It makes me happy

I FOLD for a bartender who is looking after and caring for someone who is drop dead drunk and sobbing their broken little heart out in the middle of the night, and then they end up being a regular and they get to know each other a lot more and AUUFUGHDSDGJGLKSJ
Monster/human, family au and DEFINITELY size diff. Can be more platonic, fluff, n$fw idc, if one of them has to either look up slightly or basically look up at the ceiling, i don't care what you're selling I'm buying it And i swear, 9:28 YES! I think i have at least 3 looong fanfics i haven't touched in months on top of 30 fandom and couple-sorted oneshots
Horror fics, especially body/transformation horror and psychological horror stuff. For the former, the lack of control over ones body and watching it slowly become something alien and horrifying is just delicious, and for the latter I like watching the dismantling of what make people tick and how to fundamentally mess with it and break that person. I also like vampires and werewolves, hidden world/urban fantasy, role swaps, and hanahaki disease/flowerfell type fics
Something I’ve learned about the best ships, is that they are the most interesting when it’s between 2(or more) evil-ish people. Because they lack morals, but they go out of there way to occasionally be loving to each other. For hero’s, that’s expected, nothing knew to them. But for villains to be lovey and kind to each other it shows just HOW much they love each other.
I love casefics. Finding a well-constructed case fic gives such a great "Eureka!" high when the twists and reveals start to happen. I usually only start reading them if they're tagged Complete, but there was an Ongoing TF2 fic I kept seeing fanart for on Tumblr. So I started reading it and it's SO good. The intrigue, the romance, the characterisation. Chef's kiss!
I only look for completed casefics too! I found one not too long ago that was completed and got hooked! I completed it within a day only to realise that the fic was just a setup for the next part of the series where the actual mystery solving takes place. Problem is that the next part of the series is incomplete... Thank you for the casefic recommendation, because I don't think my heart can take committing to another incomplete casefic.
I adore platonic fics, especially with my favorite current fandom ( formula one shamelessly) I just think its cute to stumble across a cute little platonic fic that bordered on romantic but the lines are so blurred you can’t really tell anymore, and travel fics, they bring me so much joy
I love self sabatoging my emotional state so i go out of my way to read THOSE kind of "dead dove do not eat" fics with a gut wrenching plot and hurt no comfort ending I recently read one with VERY good writing and it helped me fall asleep like a damn baby LMAO
My bigest gulty pleasure would honestly have to be apocalypse/wartime fics, pretty much anything with a "the odds are stacked against us and now we need to figure out how to survive when nature and/or something else is actively trying to kill us" kinda thing. I love the amount of character dynamics that can change and evolve from these, either romantically or platonically. I also just have a hyper-fixation on medicine and foraging/natural medicines, so I get really exitied when I see it pop up in fics like "YES, YES BITCH YOU CAN EAT THE DANDELIONS!" "FUCK YEAH CHEST COMPRESSIONS!"
Aaaaand this is one of the things I like about the Warhammer 40k fandom. Yes, it's the worst possible universe to live in, literally every faction is a nightmare, there is no peace and even the stars themselves are screaming for your blood. But also, these two soldiers were shot by a rogue teleporter in the middle of a war and ended up on a strange jungley planet. The sky is dark, the constellations are unfamiliar, and they will probably be eaten by a giant murdersloth if they split up. Still, one of them grew up in the jungles of Catachan and the other is eight feet tall and fearless, so they're going to make the best of it. They're going to hunt and build and grow what they can while trying to get an ancient crashed spaceship they found working... And maybe, just maybe, they'll fall in love in the process. Yeah, finding pockets of warmth and light in the cold grimdark is absolutely my favourite thing. ❤
as annoying as miscommunication can be in normal media, for some reason it's one of my favorite things in fanfics! probably because in the fics i've read the authors find ways to make it super funny. i'm just giggling, screaming, and kicking my feet the entire time
Omg I love chatfics you don’t understand. I do not care if it is OOC, I do not care if it’s stupid. My favourite chat fic is a Bungou Stray Dogs unfinished trilogy on ao3. They are so, so, so in character and it’s helped me get a better understanding of a few. Developing relationships, sex jokes, character growth, angst, fluff, comfort, humour, fights, secret relationships, misunderstandings, slice of life, a few rare pairs, so much crack, it literally is perfect and I love it so much.
Enemies to lovers (literally most of my oc’s and stuff that I read is this I am obsessed), Redemption Arcs, Villain Arcs, arcs where the love interests help each other heal from trauma, person A doesn’t like B but then halfway through their romance Person A is just like: “Oh sh_t OH SH_T NOW I HAVE FEELINGS FOR THEM?!?” …yeah, there’s probably more that tickles my brain but that’s all i’m listing rn.
kidnapping fics where the focus is on the rescue; i read a really good one that actually kept me up at night wondering what happened to the kidnapped character as the character whose going to rescue them got ready for the mission
HARD agree on one shots. When I was younger I used to be able to read fics that were 20 to 30 chapters long, one time I read a fic that was over 100 chapters long, I almost never touched one shots. But now as I’ve gotten older I’ve started to gravitate to them to more, I think the reason why I like one shots more now is because I have more responsibilities than I did back then, so I don’t have as much time for fanfic but still love it, so a nice short story is a good compromise.
Misunderstandings and miscommunication is my bread and butter in modern au enemies-to-lovers fanfics. Confessions in the rain, I can see the appeal. You are opening yourself up confessing your heart out plus you are cold and wet from the rain, then their is the relief and the closeness in celebration as well as seeking out warmth from the other. I will always adore mermaid AUs (mermay is such a blessing), but also AUs where one character is a monster and the other is human and they have their first encounter. It could be a meet-cute, first encounter, etc. It's basically the same thing as mermaid-human Aus but more flavor variety if you aren't a fish, ocean lover. Dragons has some lovely high fantasy scenarios. BUT FAE AUs, I gobble that stuff up! GIVE ME ALL THE DARK FAE and Fairy Tale nonsense! I can see the appeal of the old character and horny younger character, but for me the minimum age for the younger character has to be somewhere around 29 -early 30s. It's more dependent on the younger character's maturity and experiences with life as an adult and LOTS OF CONSENT, as well as the older character being mildly attracted but deeply respecting consent and boundaries and seeing the younger character as an independent person without belittling them. There are multiple older characters I would flirt with if given the chance. Also it has some fun tsundere energy, and I love watching someone fail at attempting to deny their feelings. *size difference and intellectual kinks will forever be a guilty pleasure

Toxic found family I *LOVE* when someone stumbles into a found family and it absolutely ruins them, but they can’t leave because they’re family no matter what happens.
I love friends to lovers, especially when one friend has been crushing for years and the other friend starts dating someone else, and then a whole angst thing usually happens and sometimes maybe a lot of times ends in smut 💀
Im a SLUTTT for soft fluffy fics, whether that be non smut or the smuttiest thing you've ever read. The way one character sees the other overworking themself and begging for them to just relax, giving soothing massages or kisses, among (us) other things. Or when character A is injured and character B helps by changing sheets or bandages, leaving lingering touches and slight angst because character B cares and loves them so much. Bonus points if it's gay, specifically yuri JGKJGKGH
I just like it when two characters have a reallly deep conversation at like 1 in the morning. Dosent have to be romantic. I just think it’s chill and nice to read.
I love unrequited but actually requited love, interdimensional crossovers, traumatized main characters, runaway children/teens, and certain OT3 ships. My biggest guilty pleasure has some caveats so I won't mention it. I really like this Fear & Hunger/My Hero Academia crossover right now, it's really cool so far, and I think it's really well written (crossover and traumatized because of it is A++).
Fanfiction IS my guilty pleasure but for me, strict oneshots girlie. Give me something quick, make it snazzy and you got me giggling and kicking my feet
Mind control of any kind. Hypnosis, puppetry, trances, mental modification, forced obedience, amnesia, mood control… not in a spicy context, I don’t really read smut, but just… mind control.
I like fics where character A is a radio personality and character B falls for their voice/personality and then they meet irl somehow but B has no idea who A is because they only go by an alias on the radio. And maybe they don’t get along irl at first so it’s an enemies to lovers thing and then eventually B finds out who A is. It’s a rare trope and I’ve only read a couple fics like this but I love it so much
there's a 1940 romcom called 'the shop around the corner' and it has a plotline similar to this! the main characters are coworkers and constantly bicker but they don't realise they're eachothers pen pals that they've fallen in love with! it's such a great trope especially when they arrange dates and show up confused as to why the other person is there
There’s so many…but if I had to narrow it down it’s Best Friends to Lovers. It’s usually a hit and rarely a miss, and it can bring me out a depressive funk if it’s really well written.

My guilty pleasure is Jealousy When one of the characters is desperately in love with another, and the another one definitely loves them back, but the first one is a little bit too overprotective for their love. And it gets me every time, if the jealous character understands he is jealous with the whole 'I'm an idiot ' attitude, tries to stop it and somehow deal with it and then lets the person they are in love with talk to other people ahahah It's so cute to see the reveal of the jealousy, those apologises and explainations, when the one who was jealous gets the sincere proof of feelings from another. And it is interesting to imagine how the object who jealous character takes as a rival could communicate with them in sone way jsjjs
Kidnaping is one of mine as well but instead of a rescue I love stockholm syndrome situations and maybe after it has really developed then a unwanted recuse
Mines are hurt no comfort, suicide, grief, abuse (bonus points for parental abuse + dead dove do not eat), self harm, they are all just aaaaaaaaah, I love to see the decadence of a character (even more my blorbos) and getting everything taken away from them until the just die (bonus if the write a note in the most messy and raw way). Not only that, seeing the aftermath, them finding the body, the funeral, reading the note (if they even get to find it), the grief, the “things will never be the same”... These are all my silly little guilty pleasures :3
I can't get enough of soulmate aus. There's just something about love being out there, and you just have to find the right person who will love you the same that really gets to me. Also I 100% agree on kidnapping/any situation where a character is helpless and their friends have to come to their aid. And the hurt/comfort potential in the aftermath is so delicious. Probably my most controversial guilty pleasure is heavy angst, hurt no comfort/delayed comfort, and t*rturep*rn. I want my blorbos put in a situation, but it just so happens that that situation is a blender set to purée.
22:40 I read a wedding fic where one of the main mcs Best friend is getting married (but the MC still has feelings for him). He's still happy for his friend so he ends up making a wish that he gets over his feelings and is able to hand over his friend as best man wholeheartedly. He then proceeds to get stuck in a timeloop of the day of the wedding😂😭. The day never plays out exactly the same, depending in what he decides to do, and one day he meets the ex of the person his friend is getting married to and turns out, he is also stuck in this timeloop. Hijinks ensue🤣
Monsterlovers (vampires, demons, and spirits/ghouls fall under this); toxic codependency/limerence being explored; villains that gradually latch **emotionally** onto the characters they used to torment; former "goodbois" going absolutely apeshit; pacts like D&D warlocks that take on Venom/Eddie Brock-like symbiosis; villains falling in love, embracing each other's fucked up nature; Dead Dove levels of kinky/gory...and a considerable amount of Old Man Get Rekt™ (Lovingly and Deliciously 💖). ...I have no shame, any more. My golden retriever partner knows I'm screwed up, but at least I save the more fucked up kinks for my fanfics. 💖 As for the NON-kinky side, Secret Baby is a trope I'm guilty of using so much. It hits different when characters eventually meet their grown kids, and they get hit with, "YOU'RE MY DAD! BOOGIE WOOGIE WOOGIE~!!!" 😆
My guilty pleasures is any tag related to sicknesses/illnesses whether mental or physical IDC. The sicker the better 😭 I like seeing my OTP taking care of each other and finally realising how much they care for one another.
Mine is pregnancy and parenthood. Especially if the character suffers and goes through an arc, whether the ending is good or bad. I love seeing how authors explore how characters would be parents, or how a character would act as a single parent, ESPECIALLY characters who have BAD RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEIR OWN PARENTS or have had TERRIBLE EXPERIENCES. Will they or will they not be like their parents? Will they be better or will they be worse? Will they keep the kid or will they abort/set them up for adoption? If they do keep the kid, how will they react when all the trials of life that come with being a parent face them? Will they ask friends and family for help? Will they raise the kid alone? Will they suffer or will they find the kid a blessing? How will their family and friends react? I have seen a few fics that explore the good and BAD sides of pregnancy, especially the depression that comes with it. Usually pregnancy fics have wholesome moments or heartwarming scenarios but I somehow resonate with those who seem to just get hit by the world with all its might yet come out stronger. Maybe not stronger. They come out fine. They come out better and satisfied. They made it through all that. Weird guilty pleasure, yeah, some may even give me bad side-eyes, but I guess this stems from my own experiences with my mom and her relationship with her mom.
Adding to this guilty pleasure is this really specific prompt where a ship has a kid and that kid is dying, whether it be through some sickness or a curse. Will their kid’s life or death status bring them closer or tear them apart?
I have PTSD and do a dumb thing where I intentionally read/watch something triggering in an attempt to prove I'm past my past. When I get through the thing without spiraling, I get myself a reward and note down what helped me. When I don't, I get upset at myself, but note down what exactly triggered me (I have a lot of memory gaps because disassociation). For whatever reason, fanfiction is my most frequent mode of testing myself. Which is why my AO3 history gets pruned constantly because those tags get wild.

My aunts best friend met her husband because when they were at another friends wedding, she wasn’t paying attention and got clocked in the head with the bouquet.
Bouquets are surprisingly heavy and the bride overshot the group.

Guy who was a a friend of a friend of the groom helped her up and they were both hysterically laughing.
Long story short they got married like two years later.

I feel like it's guilty bc it's the easy way, a bit like deus ex machina. But it's comforting

One of my guilty pleasures is reading a hero being badass while being tortured, them being rescued at some point, and then them just breaking down to their best friend/significant other.
I don't know, there's something so cathartic to me about not breaking while being hella traumatized, and then breaking down later with a safe person due to their care and kindness. Like a hammer couldn't break them, but a feather did.

I love seeing someone who isn’t in the main ship or the main group of characters watching them interact and being baffled or wildly misinterpreting what’s happening - for example coworkers thinking two characters (who the audience knows are married) hate each other bc they bicker constantly? Hell yeah good shit right there
Also, playfighting scenes. Idk I just think they’re really sweet. Especially if one (or more) of the characters is usually very stoic or reserved, it’s heartwarming to see their playful side come out.
OH I LOVE THESE!!! One example of a fic I’ve seen this in was when the characters in the ship were teachers and it was in the perspective of the students, who were betting on whether or not they were married or just good friends
I ADORE outsider fics, especially in secret world settings (e.g. hp, pjo, etc.) or when a character is often misinterpreted by others/acts differently than they are and the outsider gains a sudden understanding of the character. It's SO good. Bonus if it's social media fic/ buzzfeed unsolved episode format, those are always really fun

My guilty pleasure is sickfics/whump fics that are just as fluffy and saccharine as they are angsty, like GIVE ME the bold stoic character who’s always brave and respectable and absolutely floor them with a virus or injury to the point where they have no choice but to rely on their friends and accept help, and the illness needs to be BAD in order for the help to feel satisfying - I’m talking bedridden, can’t sit up by themselves, need to be bridal carried to the hospital/car/bathroom, that’s some GOOD SHIT

I just posted a fic that had something similar to this. It wasn't a full-on body death, but it was almost there, and definitely a death of self that had never been experienced by anyone else. Half the fic is main character struggling with the fact no one understands what he went through, and how no one can help him because the unique trauma and side effects the situation left behind.

You never leave, and you’re a terrible host. Offer me tea, a place to sit, and light a fire.”
And you can _see_ that man (uh, vampire) going “oh… oh no… OH NO I LIKE HER.”

I think this trope also works best when both characters would _never_ get together otherwise… Like I’ve read multiple featuring such pollen when it comes to Mo Ran and Chu Wanning from _Erha,_ because at the point of the story where fans call Mo Ran “Mo Ran 2.0” (if you know, you know), he loves and cherishes and yearns for Chu Wanning but could never bear to touch him due to ~reasons™️~ and then Chu Wanning needs it because he’s had a crush on Mo Ran forever but he’s too reticent to ever fully try and face those feelings.
So whenever there’s that pining + angst involved of both of them thinking the other doesn’t actually want this and that they’re the bad ones for enjoying it even though they’re helping the other party resolve an issue…

Ikr? Like... Maybe this comes from working in publishing, but a 20k story is a novella, I'd break that into a minimum of 4 chapters. Probably more like 6-8, 5000 word chapters feel too long. As you say, a oneshot being 2-8k words seems right.

honestly, agreed. its not entirely the same but sort of applicable; a while ago, i played a mobile game where the main character was supposed to be you, and i liked it a LOT more than other games that were similar because the main character felt like an actual person. like a normal, average person. it didnt feel like the creators were trying too hard to pander to everyone. they were just funny and charismatic (assuming youre not playing with the intention to be a dick, anyway lol) and it was oddly immersive. you have to think of a "player" or "reader" character as, to an extent, their own character, otherwise i dont think it works. its impossible to apply to everyone so theres no point in trying so hard, because people can tell when youre trying to pander and they automatically dont like it.

My guilty pleasure is definitely whump or heavy angst, I’ve read 100k+ fanfics that are about one character just not having a good time and I love them. Most of the time I prefer them to have a happy ending but sometimes I do appreciate when it gets worse and just never get better, sometimes the happy ending just feels unrealistic and the unhappy ending just scratches that masochistic urge in my brain that makes me wanna read stuff that will leave me crying curled into a ball at the end

One thing that I found I like is a Mermaid/Mermaid Hunter or Fisherman fic. Like, I love the idea of Character A being part of a group of people who hunt mermaids, unusually unexperienced, but while alone, runs into one (Character B) for the first time and just has this moment of “Holy shit they’re beautiful, I can’t bring myself to hurt them“ and usually angst ensues with either the crew catching Character B, and Character A either having to save them and betray the people they work with, or realizing said people are awful and choosing to escape with Character B. Something about it gives so many opportunities for hurt and comfort and I love itt

I personally love nightmare fanfics, especially when it’s a powerful being having a nightmare about losing the not powerful character. I also love immortal x mortal because of the pure angst potential.
Drunk confessions/drunk sex. I know it's problematic, but I don't care. It also enables characters acting dumb which amuses me.
Sick/Injury fic. I like seeing characters being cared by someone they're secretly pining for, and this extends to mental health episodes too, not only physical health.
Vampire AU. I was a goth kid who was also a massive weeb. Some things never change.
Not a trope that I know if it's named, but I enjoy the authors inserting random knowledge about their hobbies/job/subject into the fic through the characters explaining it enthusiastically, because I like reading things that have been injected with the author's genuine desire to gush about things they think are cool even if they're not completely related to the characters or the fic. I read a fic years ago in which a character went out of her way to explain the specifics of rhythmic gymnastics' competitive scene and I loved the amount of research and care that went into that. Idk.
Baby fics are cool too, Coley knows.
Drunk sex fics aren't necessarily problematic when both characters are drunk. Their reactions in the morning are always hilarious, especially since usually one of the characters is embarrassed, and the other one is glad it happened.

and typically in both cases the rink character might forget what happened depending how wasted they were, so the other one has an EXTRA struggle of how to process and go about telling them (or trying to avoid it altogether, but inevitably becoming distant and cold with the other and them to really knowing why bc they don’t remember the drunk incident)

Though, the thing I always find funny about one shots are the differences in length. I’ve seen some that are 500 words long, but I also saw one monster of a one shot that was 70,000+ words long XD. There are a ton of multi-chaptered fics that aren’t 70,000+ words long.

26:31 Kidnapping is my favorite tag for a REASON. There’s just so much potential- you can have the kidnapped character’s POV and the rescuers POV or you can have just one. You can have a character kidnapped for 7 hours, a day, a week, a month, a year etc. then deal with their inevitable trauma in the aftermath. *whispers* when you add torture into the mix things can get reallll bad and it just makes the rescue even better. *whispers even quieter* or there doesn’t have to be a rescue at all

I think it's becausee not aa lo tof people want to deal with that specific time paradox, of a future character being the very same cause for , idk, some technological improvement that makes them able to time travel in th efirst place or simply them being their own ancestor, or many other things that render something non-existent without the Paradox.

Social media fics. Just seeing the world interact with your characters, whether they're well known or not, just always makes me appreciative of the characters.
It's like I'm sluething on these characters by seeing what they say. It just adds so much. Like, you can play with what platform, the typing styles, usernames, profile pictures, group chats, memes the characters may or may not be aware of, the trends they try to keep up with or understand, just UGH, love it. It doesn't matter if it's based on recent events or just contained in a small section of the internet, I eat it up. I've been especially guilty of this when it comes to superhero characters in a more modern age...

Bonus: I once saw a fic where, out of spite and nagging from his team members, Bruce Wayne outbit Lex Luthor on buying Twitter-- which he then ended up improving. The author made a split universe where Bruce Wayne didn't try to buy Twitter at all, and Lex immediately made all sorts of changes. Like, changing Twitter to X and having people pay to verify they're humans. It was so silly, good thing that is entirely fictional :)

Some ships of mine just do not work for this so I haven’t read too many of them like that. I typically don’t enjoy reading smut, so maybe that’s where the non-sexual part comes from for me, or maybe it’s the fact I love descriptors of absolute trust and dependence that makes it an absolute win
Reincarnation trope is dope, especially when a character makes a promise to another character (or both of them do) that transcends lifetimes, memory and even fate itself.

Something I’ve learned about the best ships, is that they are the most interesting when it’s between 2(or more) evil-ish people. Because they lack morals, but they go out of there way to occasionally be loving to each other. For hero’s, that’s expected, nothing knew to them. But for villains to be lovey and kind to each other it shows just HOW much they love each other.
I love casefics. Finding a well-constructed case fic gives such a great "Eureka!" high when the twists and reveals start to happen.
I usually only start reading them if they're tagged Complete, but there was an Ongoing TF2 fic I kept seeing fanart for on Tumblr. So I started reading it and it's SO good. The intrigue, the romance, the characterisation. Chef's kiss!

I also just have a hyper-fixation on medicine and foraging/natural medicines, so I get really exitied when I see it pop up in fics like "YES, YES BITCH YOU CAN EAT THE DANDELIONS!" "FUCK YEAH CHEST COMPRESSIONS!"

Aaaaand this is one of the things I like about the Warhammer 40k fandom. Yes, it's the worst possible universe to live in, literally every faction is a nightmare, there is no peace and even the stars themselves are screaming for your blood.
But also, these two soldiers were shot by a rogue teleporter in the middle of a war and ended up on a strange jungley planet. The sky is dark, the constellations are unfamiliar, and they will probably be eaten by a giant murdersloth if they split up. Still, one of them grew up in the jungles of Catachan and the other is eight feet tall and fearless, so they're going to make the best of it. They're going to hunt and build and grow what they can while trying to get an ancient crashed spaceship they found working... And maybe, just maybe, they'll fall in love in the process.
Yeah, finding pockets of warmth and light in the cold grimdark is absolutely my favourite thing. ❤

as annoying as miscommunication can be in normal media, for some reason it's one of my favorite things in fanfics! probably because in the fics i've read the authors find ways to make it super funny. i'm just giggling, screaming, and kicking my feet the entire time
Omg I love chatfics you don’t understand. I do not care if it is OOC, I do not care if it’s stupid. My favourite chat fic is a Bungou Stray Dogs unfinished trilogy on ao3. They are so, so, so in character and it’s helped me get a better understanding of a few. Developing relationships, sex jokes, character growth, angst, fluff, comfort, humour, fights, secret relationships, misunderstandings, slice of life, a few rare pairs, so much crack, it literally is perfect and I love it so much.

kidnapping fics where the focus is on the rescue; i read a really good one that actually kept me up at night wondering what happened to the kidnapped character as the character whose going to rescue them got ready for the mission
HARD agree on one shots. When I was younger I used to be able to read fics that were 20 to 30 chapters long, one time I read a fic that was over 100 chapters long, I almost never touched one shots. But now as I’ve gotten older I’ve started to gravitate to them to more, I think the reason why I like one shots more now is because I have more responsibilities than I did back then, so I don’t have as much time for fanfic but still love it, so a nice short story is a good compromise.

Misunderstandings and miscommunication is my bread and butter in modern au enemies-to-lovers fanfics. Confessions in the rain, I can see the appeal. You are opening yourself up confessing your heart out plus you are cold and wet from the rain, then their is the relief and the closeness in celebration as well as seeking out warmth from the other.
I will always adore mermaid AUs (mermay is such a blessing), but also AUs where one character is a monster and the other is human and they have their first encounter. It could be a meet-cute, first encounter, etc. It's basically the same thing as mermaid-human Aus but more flavor variety if you aren't a fish, ocean lover. Dragons has some lovely high fantasy scenarios. BUT FAE AUs, I gobble that stuff up! GIVE ME ALL THE DARK FAE and Fairy Tale nonsense!
I can see the appeal of the old character and horny younger character, but for me the minimum age for the younger character has to be somewhere around 29 -early 30s. It's more dependent on the younger character's maturity and experiences with life as an adult and LOTS OF CONSENT, as well as the older character being mildly attracted but deeply respecting consent and boundaries and seeing the younger character as an independent person without belittling them. There are multiple older characters I would flirt with if given the chance. Also it has some fun tsundere energy, and I love watching someone fail at attempting to deny their feelings.

Im a SLUTTT for soft fluffy fics, whether that be non smut or the smuttiest thing you've ever read. The way one character sees the other overworking themself and begging for them to just relax, giving soothing massages or kisses, among (us) other things. Or when character A is injured and character B helps by changing sheets or bandages, leaving lingering touches and slight angst because character B cares and loves them so much. Bonus points if it's gay, specifically yuri JGKJGKGH
I just like it when two characters have a reallly deep conversation at like 1 in the morning. Dosent have to be romantic. I just think it’s chill and nice to read.
I love unrequited but actually requited love, interdimensional crossovers, traumatized main characters, runaway children/teens, and certain OT3 ships. My biggest guilty pleasure has some caveats so I won't mention it.
I really like this Fear & Hunger/My Hero Academia crossover right now, it's really cool so far, and I think it's really well written (crossover and traumatized because of it is A++).
I also love the one where they re-encounter after many years apart and just one of them remembers the other, usually the one who was in love

I don't have the attention span for anything too long.
Mind control of any kind. Hypnosis, puppetry, trances, mental modification, forced obedience, amnesia, mood control… not in a spicy context, I don’t really read smut, but just… mind control.
I like fics where character A is a radio personality and character B falls for their voice/personality and then they meet irl somehow but B has no idea who A is because they only go by an alias on the radio. And maybe they don’t get along irl at first so it’s an enemies to lovers thing and then eventually B finds out who A is.
It’s a rare trope and I’ve only read a couple fics like this but I love it so much
there's a 1940 romcom called 'the shop around the corner' and it has a plotline similar to this! the main characters are coworkers and constantly bicker but they don't realise they're eachothers pen pals that they've fallen in love with! it's such a great trope especially when they arrange dates and show up confused as to why the other person is there

When one of the characters is desperately in love with another, and the another one definitely loves them back, but the first one is a little bit too overprotective for their love. And it gets me every time, if the jealous character understands he is jealous with the whole 'I'm an idiot ' attitude, tries to stop it and somehow deal with it and then lets the person they are in love with talk to other people ahahah
It's so cute to see the reveal of the jealousy, those apologises and explainations, when the one who was jealous gets the sincere proof of feelings from another. And it is interesting to imagine how the object who jealous character takes as a rival could communicate with them in sone way jsjjs
Kidnaping is one of mine as well but instead of a rescue I love stockholm syndrome situations and maybe after it has really developed then a unwanted recuse

Mines are hurt no comfort, suicide, grief, abuse (bonus points for parental abuse + dead dove do not eat), self harm, they are all just aaaaaaaaah, I love to see the decadence of a character (even more my blorbos) and getting everything taken away from them until the just die (bonus if the write a note in the most messy and raw way). Not only that, seeing the aftermath, them finding the body, the funeral, reading the note (if they even get to find it), the grief, the “things will never be the same”... These are all my silly little guilty pleasures :3
I can't get enough of soulmate aus. There's just something about love being out there, and you just have to find the right person who will love you the same that really gets to me.
Also I 100% agree on kidnapping/any situation where a character is helpless and their friends have to come to their aid. And the hurt/comfort potential in the aftermath is so delicious.
Probably my most controversial guilty pleasure is heavy angst, hurt no comfort/delayed comfort, and t*rturep*rn. I want my blorbos put in a situation, but it just so happens that that situation is a blender set to purée.
22:40 I read a wedding fic where one of the main mcs Best friend is getting married (but the MC still has feelings for him). He's still happy for his friend so he ends up making a wish that he gets over his feelings and is able to hand over his friend as best man wholeheartedly. He then proceeds to get stuck in a timeloop of the day of the wedding😂😭. The day never plays out exactly the same, depending in what he decides to do, and one day he meets the ex of the person his friend is getting married to and turns out, he is also stuck in this timeloop. Hijinks ensue🤣
Monsterlovers (vampires, demons, and spirits/ghouls fall under this); toxic codependency/limerence being explored; villains that gradually latch **emotionally** onto the characters they used to torment; former "goodbois" going absolutely apeshit; pacts like D&D warlocks that take on Venom/Eddie Brock-like symbiosis; villains falling in love, embracing each other's fucked up nature; Dead Dove levels of kinky/gory...and a considerable amount of Old Man Get Rekt™ (Lovingly and Deliciously 💖).
...I have no shame, any more. My golden retriever partner knows I'm screwed up, but at least I save the more fucked up kinks for my fanfics. 💖
As for the NON-kinky side, Secret Baby is a trope I'm guilty of using so much. It hits different when characters eventually meet their grown kids, and they get hit with, "YOU'RE MY DAD! BOOGIE WOOGIE WOOGIE~!!!" 😆
My guilty pleasures is any tag related to sicknesses/illnesses whether mental or physical IDC. The sicker the better 😭 I like seeing my OTP taking care of each other and finally realising how much they care for one another.
Mine is pregnancy and parenthood. Especially if the character suffers and goes through an arc, whether the ending is good or bad. I love seeing how authors explore how characters would be parents, or how a character would act as a single parent, ESPECIALLY characters who have BAD RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEIR OWN PARENTS or have had TERRIBLE EXPERIENCES.
Will they or will they not be like their parents? Will they be better or will they be worse? Will they keep the kid or will they abort/set them up for adoption? If they do keep the kid, how will they react when all the trials of life that come with being a parent face them? Will they ask friends and family for help? Will they raise the kid alone? Will they suffer or will they find the kid a blessing? How will their family and friends react?
I have seen a few fics that explore the good and BAD sides of pregnancy, especially the depression that comes with it. Usually pregnancy fics have wholesome moments or heartwarming scenarios but I somehow resonate with those who seem to just get hit by the world with all its might yet come out stronger. Maybe not stronger. They come out fine. They come out better and satisfied. They made it through all that.
Weird guilty pleasure, yeah, some may even give me bad side-eyes, but I guess this stems from my own experiences with my mom and her relationship with her mom.
Adding to this guilty pleasure is this really specific prompt where a ship has a kid and that kid is dying, whether it be through some sickness or a curse. Will their kid’s life or death status bring them closer or tear them apart?

I have PTSD and do a dumb thing where I intentionally read/watch something triggering in an attempt to prove I'm past my past. When I get through the thing without spiraling, I get myself a reward and note down what helped me. When I don't, I get upset at myself, but note down what exactly triggered me (I have a lot of memory gaps because disassociation). For whatever reason, fanfiction is my most frequent mode of testing myself. Which is why my AO3 history gets pruned constantly because those tags get wild.
