As far as the Beldam goes I think there's something to be said in the Devouring Mother; a mother that can't see her children as separate from herself and metaphoricly consumes them. In Medieval literature the term Beldam refers to a fairy or witch that lures its victims into with woods by shape-shifting and making them loose desire for anything else, so pretty on the nose there.

12:41 I have never heard of this term, but it makes sense. When I was nine I accidentally ran into the wrong restroom at a grocery store and as soon as I realized my mistake a classmate and their parent opened the bathroom door. I ran to my mother and said “I am so embarrassed, I hope I never see ___’s Dad again.” Rolling her eyes she said “Stop being such a drama queen.” Understanding she just wanted me to be quiet, I was.
One week later on September 11th 2001 my classmates dad (who was a firefighter) perished. I believed for years that I was responsible for his passing.
Knowing that my parents had a lot on their shoulders with my father possibly being deployed soon and my mother’s previous scolding to not be a drama queen, I hid my belief that my words had somehow ended my classmates dad. I pushed it down and carried that guilt for years. It ate me up inside until I got a therapist. Thank goodness I did, I finally felt peace after 🕊️💕!

I never took the Oedipus/Elektra complex to really be about a child having repressed feelings of wanting a sexual relationship with one of their parents. I always saw it as that the child or person is jealous of said parent and feels like they’re in competition for attention from the other parent.

I want you to know I have absolutely devoured every single Coraline video you have made psychologically analyzing it. When I found your channel I got SO excited I thought this is it, this was made just for me oh my god! And ohhh, every single one has been so, so good. I love, love, LOVE psychological analysis of my favorite medias it's actually, just! I really love it so much, I don't even know how to express it I just think it's absolutely fascinating. Thank you so much. You have scratched a DEEP itch I had for this movie in particular but also for analysis as well. I throughly enjoyed myself, immensely.

I really like videos/essays about interpretations that they give a fair ahake that they dislike; i wish i had the words to explain exactly why or how so. I guess just know i liked this one as much as the other video, not in spite of, but partially because of that aspect.
    Thank you for reading!

I find it so appropriate that as you are trying to record the last few minutes of this video, your bunnies are trying to get your attention.
“Father, please stop making the video and come play with us!”
The video is their competition for your attention. 😆

    Firstly, love your Coraline reviews.
Second, Freudian and Jungian psychology may be outdated, but I think they can be useful for storytelling.
I'm currently working on a book with a Heroine who is illegitimate, left to be raised by her maternal relatives, but comes to the horrific realization that not only was she an unwanted child but that her birth parents, famousl silent era and theater stars, left her for selfish and controversial reasons (since this book is a period piece, the birth parents are glamourous but irresponsible, party-going, Nazi sympathizers and eugenicists, and their daughter turns out be to both autistic and bi). The Heroine does not want to believe this, so she buries herself in escapism, daydreaming, reading fantasy and fairy tales. Still idolizing her Hollywood "aunt and uncle" and watching their movies, vilifying her adopted family, and living in denial. Plus she's also viewed as a pitiful outsider to the gossipy and judgmental townsfolk.
The antagonists of this book are a Fairy Queen and her son, the Fairy Prince. They are drawn to the Heroine and want to make her their shared "companion" (make that what you will). They first get rid of her adopted family, and try to obtain her by seducing her through her Oedipal and Electra issues. PLus they also vaguely remind her of her birth parents (they too were a mixed age couple-- with the birth Mother being older than the birth Father). The Fairy Monarchs are pretty much like Zeus, eyeing a mortal that they like and try to steal them away. The Mother-Son duo also double as the Heroine's Shadow Self and Negative Animus, representing a tempting but sinister ideal adulthood that the Heroine both hates and secretly desires.

I always disliked Freud's theories when studying him in psychology. It seemed it reflected more about him as a person rather than the real world. Darn it was easy to write papers using his theories tho.

coraline didnt actually make it back home. look at the blue octipus with the pink button eye. at the start of the film it has a pointy head. and when coraline goes to the other world it has cat ears. when coraline 'beats' the other mother and gets 'home' the octipus still has cat ears... that and the heater under the window I the drawing room is different sizes.
