James Harden facing Manu Ginobili in the last seconds of a playoff game needs a deep rewind

- Опубліковано 15 лис 2024
- It's the 2017 NBA Playoffs. Rockets vs. Spurs in the final seconds of overtime of an extremely important Game 5. Needing a bucket, Houston's James Harden stares down the defending Manu Ginobili.
This is a pretty cool matchup. The teams are neighbors trying to reignite a rivalry that's gone kinda dormant. And the players have more in common than you may remember, but some key distinctions that brought them to this point. Before we watch how James vs. Manu plays out, let's rewind!

so, fun fact, this is the 100th episode of Rewinder. that feels really weird but also something we're so incredibly proud of. the only reason we've been able to make so many is because of y'all continuing to encourage us and commenting and sending love and this list could go on but don't want to interrupt your viewing time. seriously, thanks for everything, we'll have more episodes coming soon
My rockets have featured a lot on your channel. Then Harden Rockets could be a great Collapse video (i would cry the whole time)
probably my favorite series on the channel
@@Tex_Mex_A_Lex yes!! From a rockets fan, please do this. The CP3 Harden Rockets would be a great collapse video and also very sad considering where we're at now.

This is one of my absolute favorite moments as a spurs fan. I cannot describe the love that San Antonio has for Manu but when this happened it didn’t come as a surprise to any spurs fan. Although Manu was almost always the oldest guy on the court his final seasons you wouldn’t see anyone with as much heart and fire that he played with. Miss you Manu!!
I was very butt hurt when this happened. And you've renewed my rockets fan butt hurt with your comment.
@@admiralkrankandhismightyba158 sorry about that brother 😂
Dude Danny green doesn’t get enough credit he was literally all of our offense in ot
@@beheliteater I appreciate that , man. But it's not your fault that Ginobli was great.
@@jbtreshawn Yeah Green was great in OT. Patty Mills also made Pat Beverley look very silly. Not sure when that was, third or fourth quarter. But when Leonard left those other guys really picked up the slack.
That block from Ginobili was amazing . The confidence to do that without giving a foul in the dying seconds🤯
... After having already gotten beat on the play.
Manu was always a beast I used to hate watching him go off on the lakers
He knew harden’s release was behind his head so he jumped in anticipation. Godlike basketball iq.

I've been a Spurs fan since 2006, but it took me 15 years to understand that even though Duncan was the best player and Parker was the flashiest on the team, Ginobili was our soul. You can't have ego in a team where an Olympic gold winner came off the bench to win multiple championships. He created a culture that he passed onto Patty, which hopefully he could pass onto our young core before his departure.
Didn't Patty Mills already leave to go join KD and his BKN Nets.
Hopefully he can do that from the Nets 🙏🙏
They were winning titles long before Manu came.

@@bemusedpanda8875 Kawhi just wanted to leave and it’s fine . Everything has to end eventually so that it can begin again. Everything is cyclical, the process and development always begins again . Except now, the Spurs have a culture and a system left over from that time which has done its fair share of adapting over the years . Now the Spurs have Dejounte Murray, who has proven to be a special talent, the Spurs future success hangs on their ability to bring or develop another Star to play with him .
I’m a lifelong Houstonian and I loved Manu, Tim and David too. Didn’t care much for Harden at all. I remember that block!
It was such a privilege to watch Manu, Parker, and Duncan play basketball together
Unmatched chemistry
I was trying to think. This was the Parker-Manu-Tim-Robinson team, right? Couldn't remember if Tony was there, but that is a ludicrous amount of talent. (obviously i wrote this mid video since he's mentioned by name)

Manu Ginobili the reason why I fell in love with basketball. One of the most underrated and revolutionary players of his time imo

If you don’t live in San Antonio you wouldn’t understand how much the Spurs means to the city. People live and breath the Spurs. Watching the Spurs glory years growing up was a great and a big lesson to me about loyalty. Like you said Manu could’ve gone anywhere else and probably had a starting role but he stayed where he sowed his roots and for that reason he will always be a legend for the city. Also I wince got the chance to be a camp counselor for Manu’s kids at a sports camp one summer and got to have multiple conversations with him and his wife. Down to earth people. Love you Manu
If you think about it, this play really shook Houston’s confidence moving forward. If harden makes this shot, then Houston may have won the series, and then they probably would’ve stayed put because they would’ve made a deeper playoff run, which means they might not have ever gotten CP3
HIGHLY unlikely that they simply stay out after beating the Spurs. Cause the Warriors would have curb stomped them in the next round which would lead to the CP3 deal anyway
Just to add one more point: they were so confident about beating Houston, Kawhi didn't even play sixth game and it looked easy.
the cp3 deal was the best thing they ever did they were 1 bad half away from beating the super warriors with KD and most likely winning the finals against the Cavs
Manu Ginobili will always be one of my idols. What an absolute legend, on and off the court. I remember hating to see him come out of the bench, he was an all star on his own right. Guess those rings mean Poppovich was right, though...
Popovich was not right, the spurs could’ve won a couple of more titles with manu starting, or a trepeat.
My God, I love Manu so much. The fire of San Antonio basketball. Been a Spurs fan for 29 years & I still can’t really put into words what that man truly means to this city. He’s just a down to Earth, tough as hell, selfless human being. Us Spurs fans are just truly spoiled.
This was a great episode. Really shows the options you can choose. You can seek individual glory and become known for putting up insane statistics and win MVP, or you can make a sacrifice by taking a backseat to a better player and win several championships.
the juxtaposition between the careers Harden and Manu really added some nice elements of comparison that this episode was able to capture nicely. Although this moment didnt stick out like more notable moments in sports history, this was a really nice story.
It's not like he seated for a better player, it's just that it was better for the team to play him from the bench. This is corroborated by the fact people will always name Tim, Parker and Manu as the Spurs big 3. He could've been a starter and star in any team, the two seasons he played as a starter he made the All NBA team, but he chose to win with SA. Manu is amazing.
@@RafitoOoO yeah and hardens turned into a douche
I mean harden didn’t seek individual glory he wanted to stay in OKC and they didn’t pay him so he went to a team that wanted him and they decided to make him the main option.
It wasn't because harden wanted to leave okc , it was because ownership was too cheap. OKC was the opposite of the warriors, they were cheap. While Golden State gave Draymond Green, Klay, Steph and KD max contracts; OKC on the other hand only paid KD, Westbrook the max and convince Ibaka to take a paycut and tried to get harden to take a paycut.
This playoff run is super bitter sweet. We had great moments but ultimately it caused Kawhi to leave.
didnt he leave because he had a quad injury and wasnt ready to comeback and the Spurs medical staff kept saying he was good when he still wasnt?
@@futurehofer1564 up to this day it's still not so clear to whether it's what you said or wanting to stall time for trade to a bigger market team/playing for a team in Calli just like what's been happening right now.
Star players control where they want to go like Simmons and Harden to name a few
@@futurehofer1564 It is the playoff run that lead to that quad injury. Kawhi was cooking the Warriors in the WCF before Zaza did that BS

Im an Argentinien and Rockets fan. You can imagine the mixed feelings i got with this block. Now looking back all i think about it is "Of course it had to be Manu."
Well, you can always remember the times we shared with Luis Scola. One of my favorites.
El mas grande siempre! Manu... (tambien como Rockets fan)
As a Spurs fan, this brings tears to my eyes.. I miss Timmy, Tony and Manu. Those were incredible times indeed. Thank you for covering one of the big moments in Spurs history
Manu is one of my all time favourite players, MORE GINOBILI VIDS PLEAAAAAASE
I remember when Harden sent the Spurs home with his dagger step back 3 in 2012. Manu blocking that shot was so satisfying to see as a Spurs fan
I remember freaking out seeing that possession. I'm a spurs fan and my heart sunk when I saw harden pull up because I knew he could make it. But I was so happy seeing the denial. One of my favorite moments.
As an Argentine, this made me cry a little bit, ngl. That block and story behind it it's almost poetic and Hollywood-esque; you got the player who wanted the be THE guy vs. THE guy whose role was to be the player. Beautiful moment and the video made it mean so much more, kudos to everyone behind it
Probably no one will agree with me but, if I am assembling a team I'd much rather have Manu than Harden
Well it depends on what you're looking for. You could arguably find better shooters for the team but when you look at depth you can't beat manu
Manu has proven himself to be a winner, I'd choose him in his prime over Harden any day plus Manu has a way better work ethic and personality.
And Manu played defense. Manu was a pest. Harden couldn't stop an old lady with a walker.
As a first option? if you have 2 exact teams but one is lead by Harden and one by Manu, the Manu one wouldn't make playoffs and Harden's probably a 4th seed. Manu is a great player but he isn't a first option or an engine to a team
Umm manu was in a incredible team in spurs as 2/3rd option (at different years) harden was no.1 for rockets 8 years
Manu Ginobili is one of the best team players ever and truly deserves every bit of recognition he has gotten, then some.
moved to san anotnio in '97 and have been a spurs fan since. Such a beautiful moment to remember one of our greatest for.
watching the replay of this gave me the same chills I felt when I watched this live, manu was incredible
good timing on the release of this video with Manu being up for the HOF this year. he absolutely deserves it. what an amazing basketball career that man has #GSG
The definition of a winner. That is actually making everything for your team to win. Can’t wait for his Hall of Fame induction this year. Great episode, and great analogy between James and Manu, both of them all time greats.
Absolutely great story telling! Two similar players who chose two completely different career paths on different timelines collided at this exact moment. Just beautiful.

As an argentinian, fan of Secret Base, I can't explain how proud Iam that Manu has a Rewinder episode 😀

Ginóbili is my second favorite player ever behind Michael Jordan. People forget that he is the best competitor in NBA history. No other player including MJ has a biggest win percentage.
Spurs fan for life here, I respected the spurs more as a team of players the an organization. A lot changed when all of the vets retired but man, I love my guy Manu! Such a selfless basketball player. Always gave his full effort and was just a great teammate patiently waiting for his number to be called so he could help his team in any way he was asked! The culture and the brotherhood meant so much more to him then the money or the recognition! What a rare talent he was!
I almost cried as a Rocket's fan during this moment, and again the following year 😔
We are two fam :(
We had no chance in 2017 with arguably the greatest team of all time, would've been a Gentlemen's sweep.
2018 was the greatest heartbreak in Rockets history. They were 3 quarters away from winning it all in 2018 wcf game 6 and 7 but CP3 got hurt at the worst moment possible. After that the championship window closed for good.
I was at that game! It was an absolute madhouse when Ginobili made that block. It was also my first playoff game where I witnessed the spurs win. Definitely one of the best moments that I was able to share with my dad. Glad you guys did a video on it!
my favorite spurs player growing up. miss seeing that guy on the court. threw unreal dimes
Manu Ginobili the most underrated player of all time
Manu is my favorite player of all time. I almost wish he left the Spurs to see him play with no limits. I am a Spurs fan so I am also grateful he didn’t. His energy was almost unmatched. Even in his last few years being one of the oldest players in the league he still had many clutch moments, this block being one of them.
Manu Ginobili was always a Legend.
One of the trickiest players I'd ever seen play.
As a spurs fan this was amazing. Rockets fans tried to say it was a shooting foul. ALL BALL BABYY!!!

@@gabrielesantoro1521 nah you don’t know what it felt like in San Antonio when this game happened. People who aren’t from here will never understand the love we have for the spurs. They are all we have. In New York, LA, Chicago, almost every big NBA city has a football team. All we have is the spurs. We love the spurs!
When it happened, I was hoping to see a foul in the replay. But I knew it was the most obvious clean block you could imagine.
@@admiralkrankandhismightyba158 it was definitely one of those plays where 9/10 times with any other player it would have been a foul but man Manu was just on another level that night!
@@TheGamingAltar I agree.
Amazingly written script. As argentinian I'm well aware about Manu's influence in Harden's game style. Also his humility and the sacrifice he made. I knew this story but this video is a great essay. Thank you.
People so often forget Ginobli all the time. Dude popularized the euro step in the league and was an all around great player. And I'm pretty sure he just got into the hall of fame which puts the cherry on top!
As a longtime Spurs fan, I most certainly was dying for a chance for my Spurs to avenge that 1995 playoff loss. That 95 loss in particular hurt, because that was San Antonio's first real shot at a title (at least in my lifetime). Oh well, at least the Spurs won 5 titles by the time they next met the Rockets in the playoffs.
That was also the first time we beat the Rockets in a playoff series. And doing that in Houston, in dominant fashion, made it even sweeter. It was the last great night of the Spurs Dynasty, and it was good.
Blame it to Dennis Rodman.
He pulled off his uncontained theatrics and antics at the wrong time.
It's a blessing in disguise anyway.
Two years later, Tim Duncan arrived.
Thanks also for Timmy for deciding to stay in college so to fulfill his promise to his mother to finish college. Otherwise, he could be played in Golden State (projected to be top pick in 1995) or Philly (1996).
Love how this series gives so many props to so many deserving and sometimes under-appreciated players.
I'm from San Antonio and man that game was badass. Ginobili will never be forgotten in San Antonio I miss those days
The cleanest block, 100000% all on the ball, right there when Harden was about to pull the trigger. So beautiful to watch it
As an Argentinian (Which was too young to watch Manu winning the gold medal live) this moment embodies what he is, aggressive but respectful, a guy who has a clean sheet in every aspect, in and outside the court. I support the Hawks but as every Argentinian which likes basketball Manu's playoffs were unmissable, he has made and will continue to make our nation proud.
Love this series , made my whole day
Manu Ginobili one of my most favorite player to watch growing up. I love him for this. A true competitor
Manu's electric play off the bench during those 2000's playoffs is the reason why I watch the NBA since I was in second grade.
Randomly was recommended this video and holy crap this was so good. Was not ready for it.
I remember I was surprised it wasn't called a foul, kudos to that officiating team- nobody points out when they are on the right side of history
Facts
Fair point but that block was clean as a whistle
The only way they can consider it as a foul is if they bought Harden's flailing after he got blocked...
That Ginobili block is just so clean.
I’ve been a basketball fan for long enough that this moment is now rewindable
probably the greatest stop ill ever witness live man ill never forget this game.. an iconic moment 4 manu on his way out glad it isnt being forgotten
Manu is literally one of the greatest guards of all time to never get any credit. Although he wasn’t flashy with it and his stats don’t reflect it like crazy that’s because of where he was but he could’ve easily been a second option and a starter for any other contender and could carry a team as the leader in his prime to at least a playoff berth. He was the complete package on both ends don’t @ me he’s special
Manu was most definitely flashy, check out his highlights
Nah manu is flashy his passes and lay ups sometimes are the opposite of the usual spurs system
@@winter9242 I think that those passes are actually the epitome of the spurs system, call movement was always emphasized and he and Tony's great passing and driving to the basket helped the system flourish
@@duncangilpatric987 i meant his passes that are high risk and high reward. Passes that are thrown on tight windows and even no look passes. Those aren't things you associate with the spurs big 3 under pop
He definitely brought the international play for the Spurs. Like Joe Ingles for Utah
One of my favorite moments ever! I remember watching this game with my bros we all went nuts when Manu got that block. None of us are Spurs fans. I miss Manu!!!
Manu was the reason I became a spurs fan! Glad he’s nominated to the HOF
Love the content every time. The work put in, and quality of production, constantly is top shelf.
A great rewind would be the last game Patrick Roy played for Montreal. Mario Trembley and him had issues from his rookie year that lead to him leaving.
Again, folks awesome work, and please keep it coming. Lol you made a Mariners fan out of me with your Mariners history. They have the Expo energy, but in the AL... and without Jeff Loria messing it up.
The interesting takeaway from this video is that Daryl Morey is probably one of the most patient and calculated GMs in NBA history. We were questioning for so long why they wouldn't just move Ben Simmons earlier since it was clear from the beginning of the season he wouldn't play but damn, he's got some really good luck and hella patience to be able to pull James Harden twice in 10 years
Feels like he’s never been on the losing side of a trade either. It’ll be interesting to watch the east this post season.
@@LeeGHThomas except the Westbrook-CP3 trade. Set the Rockets back half a decade.
@@OfficialJPryde Harden is my favourite player but I have to admit that trade is on Harden. I know hindsight is 20/20 if he could have just been patient with CP3 and at least put aside their differences then there's no way in hell Morey would bring in a complete non-shooter who required other big pieces to be moved to accommodate his play style. But I guess Harden saw his window of opportunity to win a title closing, plus seeing the Lakers get AD and the Clippers get PG and Kawhi made him panic.
It hurts more knowing Russ ended up losing us game 2 of the Lakers series and the season was a wrap from there, whereas a resurgent CP3 would have helped us take a 2-0 lead and at the very worst pushed the series to 7.
Just finding this comment, how do you feel now?

This video give chills to me , to same players with same styles take diferences rolls , one consider greatest scorer and the other greatest six man ever , manu ginobili was a beast , his impact in winning and is selfinnes make him one of the greatest winners in spots ,4 time champion (deserved 2005 finals mvp ,so he was a fundumental key for spurs success and no another role player) , and greatest winning % in nba history ( 72% of his games has won , over more of 1000 games play). For me he deserved be in the top 75 nba (and he have and argument if he his the greatest six man ever), winning is more important that stats , and manu is a winner.
Yeah he deserved a spot, tbh I'd have put him in over Dame Lillard. Theres a lot of guys who should've took Dame's spot. Manu, Dwight, Klay, and a couple others I cant think of off top. Al

Thank you, as a Spurs fan. I feel that this play was already forgotten. To be honest, I haven't seen a lot of NBA since the Spurs won in 2014 but I saw this game. It was like 10 years ago again. And we, the fans, couldn't thank Manu enough.
There is a lot to love about being a Spurs fan. Ginobili is in the pantheon forever.
When Manu was on the court he was absolutely without a doubt the hungriest player and he always left everything he had on the court. That is why he is so beloved in San Antonio.
Manu definitely deserves to be in NBA top 75 (over AD,dame or Westbrook)
That was SO SICK!
Hard to believe that it's already been almost 5 years since this epic series. I always knew about Manu growing up but I never really knew about his situation or his style of play until I started watching NBA games during the 2014-2015 season. I did always find it weird to hear that he was a very flashy guard that would easily score on a fast break considering it clashed with what I knew Spurs basketball to be: slow, grit and grind basketball. After watching this video, I can understand why they moved him to the bench. He could play his brand of basketball and change the pace of play and catch the 2nd unit off-guard. I'm glad I was able to watch and appreciate Manu for what he was before he retired.
Playoff manu defense is dope. When I used to play b bal with my friends I always imitated his defense.
Seth is such an incredible story teller! Thank you for this!!
Manu the Legend.
I have seen playing live all the NBA stars since the mid 80's, but seeing Manu playing is the most impressive life lesson on how you can put passion on what you do.
Ginobili energy and focus on a basketball court is on the top three ever but not for competition (like MJ or Kobe) but just for the love of this sport. San Antonio will love Manu forever
I am a Rockets fan, but have a ton of respect Spurs! It sucks we couldn't win a ring during the Harden era.
2018-19 Game 6 Western Conference 2nd Round. Take advantage of Steph having 0 points in the 1st half and build a larger lead to cushion his explosion in the 2nd half and maybe you don’t lose that series
I love the idea of Rockets, Thunder, and Grizzlies fans from that era all at a bar drinking our ring "What Ifs?" away. The Spurs, Lakers, and Warriors were just too good!
Manu just being Manu I.e. an AMAZING baller
These videos make me so nostalgic for this era of the NBA (even though it hasn't been that long), I really liked it when you guys did some highlighting of the years major events in your "The Worst" series.
