Chris Webber vs. Kevin Garnett in a do-or-die, buzzer-beating moment needs a deep rewind

- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- It's 2004, and the Sacramento Kings and Minnesota Timberwolves are in the final seconds of a prolonged, testy battle to determine who advances in the playoffs to face the mighty Los Angeles Lakers. Poetically, the deciding moment -- either overtime or game over -- comes down to a fascinating, longstanding matchup: Kevin Garnett vs. Chris Webber. To appreciate this moment, we should understand the intertwined history of those two revolutionary players.

It's so fascinating looking back on this series as the last time both the Sacramento Kings and Minnesota Timberwolves were truly relevant in the Western Conference landscape. Now, nearly 20 years later, after combined 30 year playoff droughts, they both appear to have rebuilt themselves into serious contenders once again.
I still wanna see what MN looks like in a 7 game series. Anthony Edwards is the truth though.
The Kings and Wolves are nowhere near serious contenders 😂
@@cottonmather8146you do NOT know ball
@@cottonmather8146the Timberwolves are currently the 1# seed in the west they are contenders are idoit
@@cottonmather8146 Thats such an idiotic wild comment lmao. Do you like even watch the nba? follow the stats and standings? X3
This Sacramento Kings team was so good and so deep. The tough Western Conference, foul play by the refs, and Chris Webber’s injuries limited them to getting an NBA Championship, possibly solidifying Chris Webber’s Hall of Fame case much sooner.
Was the West REALLY tough? From 1999-2010, it felt like the Lakers/Spurs Invitational
@@chrisuncleahmadBasically. It was especially after refs play for the Lakers play for the many of the playoffs. Spurs won 4 Lakers 5 from 1999-10
Your forgetting bout the suns I blame Robert Horry
@@Bigedub101 The West was very deep during the early 2000’s. The East wasn’t very strong, having the Nets, Pacers, and Pistons as true contenders. But entering the mid-2000’s and 2010’s, teams like Miami, New York, Boston, Pacers, Bulls, and the Cavs started to balance out the difficulty in both conferences.
@@guillermoportillo7949 the West wasn’t deep, it was top heavy. LA and San Antonio basically carried the conference for eons
I have never related/felt bad for an athelete than I do for Chris Webber. Such a high level player who was seemingly cursed to never get over the hump and win a championship. His whole NCAA/NBA career he had huge mistakes or hugh heartbreak and that is super humanizing for me and I just feel for the dude. Always loved seeing him on TNT covering the NBA
As a wolves fan- He’s GOATd. We wouldn’t have KG without Webb.
agreed except for the tnt part - specifically his colour commentary on the broadcast. didn't think he was very good at that. did like him in the studio though, especially back in the day with GP
I agree CWebb doesn’t get enough praise for how nice of a player he was
@@luissyquia I don't like Reggie and Cwebb as commentators but there was 1 game where I loved them for their authenticity. The game 7 WCF rockets vs warriors. The game the Rockets missed 27 straight 3s. The officiating was so bad, obviously favoring the Warriors and those two were not afraid to tell it as it was. Cwebb probably had flashbacks from that lakers vs kings series. he was a part of.
That early 2000's Sac Town team was one of the most complete teams assembled. The bench mob was what stood out to me. That bench would slot into the game play their hearts out night in and night out.
2003 was the best chance for Rick Adelman and the Greatest Show on Court era Sacramento Kings to win it all.
Unfortunately, Chris Webber tore his lateral meniscus in his knee against the Dallas Mavericks and it snowballed from there.
It's so crazy that how Garnett and Webber played at the 4 back in the 90's and early 00's is just how star centers are expected to play now
They helped break the mold
This game basically change the future of the Sacramento Kings as this turned out to be Chris Webber's final Playoff game as a member of the Kings which is part of the demolition of those Kings teams of the early 2000s.
After this, they wouldn't become relevant until De'Aaron Fox arrived especially last season's first Playoff berth since 2006.
Stop lying this was not Webber’s last game as a King
@@e.k.5657 My bad. I just edit it. That was his last Playoff game as a King just to clarify.
It changed with that 03 knee injury. Tragic. This was such a fun team. DAMN I wanted them to beat the Lakers.
They were Suckramento for so long after.
Funnily enough this was also the last time the wolves would make the playoffs until the Jimmy Butler year (17-18). The next year Cassell and Sprewell wanted more money and the team kind of imploded. Then KG eventually wanted out and was sent to Boston. Some dark years in there, but seems to be looking up for both franchises now.
It’s always so heartbreaking to see c web fall to the ground after that miss
Dam near teared up
It’s like watching the infamous timeout call in the NCAA final. You hope something else happens…
Even Garnett looked down and started approaching him.
Feel you.
The in-out shot is the culmination and the confirmation of the end of prime CWebb, which began with the foolish alley-hoop attempt in 3rd Q of 2003 WCSF G2 (opposite Dallas).
@@OrionOodama yeah that knee injury really took the rest of his career. It’s so sad because at a time he was def on Duncan, dirk , Garnett level
From 1998 - 2006 the Power Forward/Center positions in the NBA were AMAZING! I’m honestly grateful to have lived through those days. I loved how the big man was dominant through those years.
I was at that insane game 3 of this series back when I was in middle school. Peja & Bibby went nuclear down the stretch to force OT. I just looked it up, they were down 11 with 2 minutes left. Half of Arco had left, but the rest of us who stayed absolutely lost our minds. If they win that game it doesn't even get to game 7.
I was praying so hard for that C-Webb 3 to go down at the end. It was shame seeing how badly it ended with that ACL tear taking it's toll on him physically. So much talent on that squad, Gerald Wallace couldn't even sniff the court all year.
It was a looooooooong wait, but I'm glad we get to light that beam now!
Not to mention Kings blew game 2, let that game slip out of their hands.
I'd like to note (even as a KG fan) that KG stuck his elbow right in Peeler's chest, before Peeler swung back. So KG wasn't innocent in that exchange.
True but peeler elbow him the play before
I don't think you can ever call KG innocent in any situation. If he gets in a fight he probably not only deserves it but started it.
It's what made him a great player and all time instigator
Facts lol..KG was sneaky dirty and always been🤣
@@alexanderadonyae7937 no he wasn't,
He like to trash talk.
Name one NBA player that said that kg was a dirty player.
This Wolves team would have made the Finals if Cassell hadn't gotten hurt. I will go to my grave thinking that. Beyond that, I don't know what would have happened, except that Wolves-Pistons would have been the rock fight to end all rock fights. Wouldn't bet on the winner, but I would bet my soul that some sort of Finals record for low score would have been set. Two absolutely insane defenses.
1991 world series deserves a deep rewind.
Ive seen so many videos on the subject on UA-cam I thought SB already did one lol (Not counting the Pretty Good Lonnie Smith video by Jon Bois.)
Id recommend Jolly Olive's vid on that series.
@@bmac4Jon Bois is the goat!
2006 Mavericks/Spurs Game 7 needs a deep rewind
These two teams have been stricken of playoff success. Minnesota has won 0 titles, and Sacramento hasn’t even been until recently since 2005 or 6. Good to see them do well again.
KG has one of my favorite "games" of all time. Weren't too many bigs playing like him before he showed up. Prime Big Ticket was so fun to watch.
Those Kings teams played the most beautiful basketball I've ever seen. Weber, Vlade, and Brad Miller were 3 great passing big men and Adelman designed the system around that. And controversial take, but i think 03-04 Kevin Garnett is the best player I've ever seen play ball. I know Haralobos says it's the most impactful offense/defense season that we have data for.
Actually, it was Pete Carril who developed the Greatest Show on Court era Sacramento Kings offense with Rick Adelman.
Unfortunately, those Kings will continue to be overlooked because they didn't win it all.
Kings first error was not retaining Hedo.
@@karlanthonymargate7362 And also Scot Pollard.
This is arguably your best rewind yet 🔥
That shot rattling in and out for C-Webb was one of those instances where it symbolized the beginning of the end of that Kings era of Basketball under Rick Adelman. That 3-year period (01-02, 02-03, 03-04) were the Kings best opportunity to win it all and its unfortunate that so much of what they did from 1999 to 2006 get little recognition.
Damn I know it has probably been commented before, but I will say it again... I get chills watching these Rewinder videos especially, regardless if I know the outcome already or not..Amazing work and much appreciated
My two favorite players of the late 90's early 2000's.... I went to Michigan because of Webber and the Fav 5 and was upset that KG decided not to come and go straight from high school to the league.
Having watched this game a ton of times and seeing how the crowd was so into it is amazing on itself...Their 1st game 7 in Minnesota this is a must watch game KG was EVERYWHERE even though he likes to get his teammates involved in most cases but this game he just completely took over on a whole different level...Peak KG is the best PF and a top 10 talent of all time for that 03-04 season Haralobos says it's the most impactful offense/defense season that we have data for.
This guy makes good videos. Good job man
Wally Szczerbiak catching strays, damn.
Wally is a legend.
Seth's narration still remains second to none in the sports world.
Who else feels really nostalgic when they see that old TNT scoreboard graphic?
I feel nostalgic knowing no one in the 2004 playoffs is in the current nba and lebron is the only player left in the nba that played in the entire year of 2004 even going into mid 2005...
I LOVED watching both of these teams through the early 2K’s.
Thank you for giving the world the context these two teams needed. They’ve been so bad for so long, many viewers of this channel weren’t alive to see any of these series play out.
To allow fans to see and understand when these two franchises weren’t the laughing stocks of the league, that’s special. From Sacramento, with love. Thank you.
This series is gold.
"The Vanguard of the power forward position"? At this point in time, Tim Duncan was the best PF in the league and already a 2 time champion.
These battles were legendary between these two
Heartbreaking..... then and now 😢
I’d like to think you keep making content like this because I need it
UA-cam is pushing it by giving me two 15 second ads that I can't skip back to back
People don’t understand how good KG was…dude was a beast in the 2000s
Kansas vs. Memphis. 2008 national championship. Mario's Miracle deserves a Deep Rewind.
Been asking about that for 3 years now…
@@homunculusSZNYep and will continue to do so until there's a video.
Fumbling Stephon Marbury, getting punished heavily for the Joe Smith debacle, and then lowballing Latrell Sprewell in contract negotiations after he had an incredible playoff run are three of the biggest reasons the T'Wolves didn't become a consistent top-tier Western Conference team.
Damn man…seeing KG walk over to Webber almost immediately after it’s over…
Legendary basketball games & moments forgotten because neither team won a chip that year , thank you for highlighting these
Thr Wolves are in 1st place in the West right now and this drops 😅
2nd best record in the nba behind Boston. Let's go!
I was thinking this probably last time Minnesota seen #1 seed in 20 years
Kings are doing well too. Ended the longest playoff drought in NBA history months ago and look like a threat in the Western Conference again.
@@MNSportsJunkie101 The Kings are about as a threat as the 2010 Blazers. If their offense isn't clicking, they have nothing since their defense is weak. They're a 2nd round exit at best
YES, he’s back narrating 🫶🏻🙌🏻
This was a more interesting time where players would score a basket in an intensely difficult defense which made me believe that NBA players are superhuman for such feat. Nowadays, there's no defense. The rules are leaned one sided to the offense that playing the game no longer separates NBA players from casual pickup games.
The 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s NBA teams will thrive in today's three-point happy NBA.
The Golden Age of the Power Forward position.
I freaking love this channel, specifically your basketball content.
This really threw me back to the first season that I actually followed (at age 9). Great stuff!
I remember this like yesterday and this was on Kevin Garnett birthday too
KG one of the most underrated players in NBA history and one of the main players who changed the game and future trajectory of the league. He deserves more recognition post career. He accolades list is among the most stuffed you’ll ever see in NBA history dude was incredible.

Opening up a new Secret Base video and hearing Seth or Clara's voice is just goddamn satisfying
Lots of NBA heartbreak in this one.

As a diehard TWolves fan, I was literally screaming "Noooooo!" When Webber took that final shot, I knew he was gonna hit it and my tortured playoff team would have to suffer through another five minutes. But he missed and the Wolves got to face a fixed series against the Lakers
This should be the only narrator for these series it’s not even close 💯
80-83 in the fourth of a playoff game is peak 2000s dead ball era basketball 😭
That was like good for east teams in that era..west teams usually better like kings lakers mavs spurs
Love the vid, I was a huge fan of both of these teams. Really wish they both could have won one in this era
Chris Webber is why I am a kings fan. He was my favorite player when I was a kid
We love you CWebb. Be right there during the championship parade #LTB
Amazing as always
wow, that last shot of kg almost immediately looking around for webber and going to hug him, just so cool
Great video. Now just just patiently waiting for Draymond vs Gobert beef video.
Chris Paul hitting a huge 3 to cut the lead down to 42 deserves a deep rewind
Seriously, you could make this work. How CP3 ended up on the Suns, the Luka-Booker beef (everybody act tough when they up), it's all actually interesting enough for an episode
Oh I’m so ready for this
Missing that shot broke him. I could tell that hurt
Great rewinder as always. Does the NCAA not want to let Secret Base get highlights for the Webber timeout game because that’s the rewinder everyone wants to see?
The western conference had the best power forwards and players during 99-2007 seasons: kg, dirk, tim, shaq, webber, rasheed, kobe, yao, tmac, steve nash, ginobli, parker, steve franchise, ray allen. Boston getting kg and ray allen to join pierce made it some what fair with 4 decent teams in the east for the next years but it was still Lebron's conference during those years. Glad these recent years there a multiple teams on both conferences competing.
Still a kings fan from those early 2000s teams. That was the night that that magical run officially ended:(
Glad we’re finally back
And just like 20 years ago today, the Timberwolves won Game 7 to dethrone the defending NBA champion Nuggets to advance to the Western Conference Finals.
Ref "weirdness" is a nice way to put it about 02
Exactly love How so many UA-camrs use choice words about that reffing
That was a modern NBA team playing in the early 2000s
Sacto! Thanks for that Seth. Props from a Sacramento native.
Great content, subscribed.
Can we get a deep rewind of Lakers Suns 2006 1st round game 6? Lots of emotions that game.
This was post prime Chris Webber trying to come back from that knee injury & he was slow & struggling to finish at the rim, would've been a better matchup if it was prime CWebb but he impacted the Kings negatively this year as they had the number 1 seed & best record in the league prior to his return
This game hurt me so much as a kid growing up in Sacramento, that I swore I was done being a Kings fan and was going to root for the Bobcats. Still remember the tears in my eyes as I took the trash out after Webber missed the 3 😂😂
@secretbase Are you guys ever going to bring back the collapse series?
LOVE ALL DA EPISODES!!!!
The physics of watching a ball go halfway in and out just adds to the already devastating heartbreak. The rims should be designed to force the ball downward, not up lol.
THANK GOD IT’S SETH!!!!!
Imagine the history repeats itself exactly 20 years later in 2024 between Kings and Wolves. Can't wait
Great video 👏🏾
This missed shot represented the Kings team during that era very accurately.
KG was a completely absolute beast this season, to this day the pain hasn't faded.
This will go down as most dominant all around performance by a player this century. Kids don't know this version of KG. The Big Tickets peak was unprecedented but hidden because of being on awful twolves teams.
That double rim in'n'out as well. Just an inch to the right and boom, OT
Another great Deep Rewind! 🙂
KAT and Naz Reid are both 6'10"+ and having 50/40/90 seasons. Reid is low-key one of the most underrated NBA players that should be 6th Man of the Year based on impact!! The Wolves are built the right way when healthy. Don't underrate McDaniels either, or Kyle Anderson. With Conley and Ant in the back court the wolves have built an insane front court with depth.
Awesome video.
seeing Latrell in his DaDa Spree's takes me way back! those were my favorite until the air bladder blows out lol
Webber never left the floor after that lob. And he never returned. He showed up in Philly like a 90’ Chevy Blazer with no spare tire and no front bumper.
Given how they both are playing now ,I would love a playoff series this year between these two
Thinking of that Kings team still makes me sigh wistfully to this day.
All I want for christmas is more SB content. Yall hiring? I’m down to help make that happen 😭
